“I will unite with anyone to do good, but with no one to do harm. “ (Frederick Douglass)
A truly enlightening and refreshing journey with Tyrus as the guide! Yes. He talks politics. Oh! No! ‘Them there is fighting’ words.’
But, this well woven expose/memoir is engaging and profound. It offers insight into those issues that, if we let them, will, inevitably, always divide us. He weaves in reflections of his childhood and the abuses he suffered. But, this is not a book about ‘victim hood.’ But, rather a biopic, at times, paradoxical examination of our societies’ current state of affairs. Advice: If you’re looking for a ‘get on that soapbox and preach’, look elsewhere. Because, there is a raw, look in the mirror, find a common ground, and ‘look within before looking without’ ideal at play here.
Of course, there may be, some/many will argue and, consequently, delete you if you disagree with their views. Again, Tyrus’ truths are grounded and ‘doable.’ Imagine finding that middle ground. That thread, however flimsy, that, like an ant that can carry more than 50 times its weight, can free each of us from our stoic beliefs that do little, if anything at all, to unify those things we DO have in common.
One of my favorite books/plays is a ‘little known’ work (eye roll here), ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ by Lorraine Hansberry . There’s one line I’d like to include here-
Mama: There is always something left to love. And if you ain’t learned that, you ain’t learned nothing.
Kudos, Tyrus!!
