Camelot is fallen. King Arthur is dead. The world carries on, slouching toward its final breath.
"I do what I have to just to stomach this cesspool I woke up to!"
Seventeen hundred years after the events that shaped him into a villain of legend, Morgan le Fay wakes, little more than flashes of his life past to guide the way. Thus, he dons the mantle the world has fashioned for him, cloaking his true identity beneath the guise of a mercenary—teaching the neon city of Etna that he is not one to be trifled with.
"And me? What about my life helped you stomach this place?"
Aaron Jones will never know a land beyond this one, and while it may not be a place of fairytales, he does everything within his limited power as an officer with the ECPD to make it safe. That is until his efforts lead him to a dark alley in the middle of a city-wide blackout, and a jab to the neck lands him on Etna's missing persons list.
The past and future collide in Etna—one of the final bastions of humanity—as Morgan navigates the schemes of the corporate giant, Esotech, the politics of the Occult Community—and the notion that he could be so much more than the world remembers.
Awakening in Sapphire is the first installment in the Once & Forever Kings series. While it is a low spice* MM Romance at heart, it features many characters along the LGBTQ+ spectrum. With a grumpy/sunshine dynamic, a soulmates theme and a cast comprised of found family, it's a Happily Ever After for now that will continue in the following four books!
Jonathan Hawker is a queer fantasy author, with a love for magic, all things supernatural, and endlessly witty banter.
Born and raised in Michigan, he lives with his husband, Keiri, and their three cats. Between writing, he enjoys gaming—both video and tabletop—constant EDM music, and of course, reading as much MM fiction as he can get his hands on.
Awakening in Sapphire was a great read! The characters were well written and I ended up loving them all! The romance between Morgan and Aaron was so sweet. The entire story was intriguing and kept me engaged the entire time. And I really enjoyed all the magic, witches, fae, and creepy creatures woven into the story. The premise was a lot of fun; having Arthurian characters in a sci-fi setting made for a really unique story. I want more!
Wow, where do I even begin? This book blew me away! I was hooked from the very first page and found myself unable to put it down. Now I’m eager to dive back in for a second read! The cover art is stunning, and the plot is a refreshing twist on the classic King Arthur tale. Plus, the author’s own illustrations are a delightful touch.
The character development is outstanding, the chemistry is nothing short of electric. Morgan’s transformation throughout the story is especially impressive.
Also, the representation of LGBTQ+ identities is done exceptionally well. I found Daphne’s portrayal as a trans character to be both respectful and poignant: Each character, regardless of their background, feels authentically crafted and is infused with a genuine sense of care. And that unexpected twist at the end? It left me on the edge of my seat, eager to see how their story unfolds! One of the most touching aspects of this book is the theme of found family. The MCs heartfelt interactions made me smile and reminded me of the strength of chosen family.
Overall, Awakening in Sapphire is a beautifully crafted work. I’m thoroughly enchanted by these characters and their journeys, and I’m counting down the days until the next book in the series! ❤️
I cannot believe I waited this long so read this masterpiece. I feel like I committed a crime. It needed to be read earlier. I am head over heels in love with it and need more. MORE.
This is a sci fi slow burn loosely tied to Arthurian myths (which being the misfit queer kid I had no choice but to be a huge nerd about ofc). So when I saw that I was like 🫢 and had to own it obviously. Let's be real Arthur was totally gay. We all know it. I loved this interpretation of these characters. There is depth and growth and communication all while there is also fighting and plots and intrigue.
Morgan is like a grumpy cat who growls at anyone on principal but then a pretty blond haired boy is like "you're so cute" and Morgan immediately melts into a puddle of purring a goo. The grumpy/sunshine was very sweet on the two on them. I loved how despite the instant attraction they took the time to talk to each other. I'm hoping we'll get much more in future books. HIGHLY recommend. Seriously. Please read this book. Everyone read this book. The end.
Camelot. Make it queer. Bring it into the modern age. Or wait, our future! This is Jonathan Hawker's Awakening in Sapphire! And it is spectacular!
Morgan Fell awakes 17 centuries after falling "asleep." With the help of his trusty apprentice he's able to acclimate as much as possible into the city of Etna and a new identity. Morgan isn't even aware of Aaron Jones at first, but sparks immediately fly when they do meet.
This story is full of adventure, mystery, and plenty of twists. I love Morgan and Aaron’s sweet and sassy relationship and all the revelations they discover along the way. Also, the supporting cast of characters are fantastic! Jonathan has done an amazing job of character development and world building in this magical retelling of King Arthur.
If you are ready for a diverse love story filled with magic, intrigue, friendship, and Knights of the Round Table, get this book!
Awakening in Sapphire is not only about love and adventure but also about community support, friendship, and finding one's own identity in a world that can be dangerous to those who are different. We see the protagonist, Morgan, not only find love but also learn more about himself and start to uncover what has been hidden from him long ago. In Aaron, we see bright-eyed innocence that must come to terms with evils that exist within society, even when we are blind to them.
One of the main themes that stood out to me was that of one's support system and found family. “…I know you’re scared. I know you don’t let people get close, and you have a hard time letting people get to know you because you worry that you don’t even know yourself. But you can’t keep holding onto that nothingness inside. You have the rest of forever ahead of you, sweetie. Try to fill some of it with a little bit of happiness.” Interactions like these are found throughout the book, not just directed by a protagonist, but as a way for those of House Fell to support one another. We also see this as House Fell joins the greater occult community, and while there will always be those who will fight against you, you can find those who will support you and stand by your side.
Now, as a doll, I have to talk about my girl Daphne (absolutely the best character; I am just saying I am not biased at all). “She doesn’t feel that way. Not at all. She says you have her greatest gift: bringing her here, giving her a body where she feels at home, and training her. You gave her back her life. You have her the chance to become who she is.” Trans identity in media can often be played up as something that is inherently negative and that trans identity itself is suffering. It is essential to recognize the dangers and marginalization that transgender and other gender-diverse people face, especially the experience of BIPOC trans individuals. Daphne, to me, represents the things that you can find joy in within understanding, accepting, and loving your identity.
Of course, the love story, we have to talk about it! “…They had found one another from across time. Their very centers of gravity had pulled them together like stars colliding in devastating, comic beauty amidst destruction and chaos…” This book is about a soul looking for their other half. While they must face trials and tribulations, they still find each other even at the most dire of moments. Grumpy/Sunshine usually is not my thing; however, seeing Morgan grow and change brings me so much joy. While we still get our broody bad boy witch, we see him soften up and accept that he is allowed happiness. Aaron is just so sweet and kinda naughty. I love a soft boy who’s a bit of a freak. I’m sorry! In chapter 12, however, you get to see Morgan drive home that he is most certainly interested in what lies within Mr. Jones's pants, and you get to watch Aaron squirm. I love that.
There is still so much left to discover in this big city. I know book two will be just as captivating as this one, if not more! Overall, Awakening in Sapphire is an absolute delight. If you are in the market for a beautiful retelling of Arthurian legend in which you can experience and see different LGBTQIA+ represented and truly loved, this is worth the read and keeping up with. So, hop on your sexy bad-boy bike and ride after we gotta “Live now, flirt later…”
10/10 Sexy Witches and Golden Retriever Boyfriends
P.S. If you get the opportunity to read the naughty scene. BABY WHEN I TELL YOU!! Again, you can see the type of books I read, and I need more of this. I am not going to say who, but when I say, I shout, “Oh my god! He’s a service top!” That’s what I like to see! Babe gets the paperback or hardcover; it's worth it for the love of gods. Please, Mr. Hawker, give me more of this. I am not just asking. I am begging. Hear this humble woman’s request, please…
I finished this a little while ago but have been struggling with what I exactly I want to say about it. I will start with the fact that I LOVED this book. Like couldn’t put it down, want to reread it right away, buy it in paperback so its’s on my shelf too kind of way! The cover, the plot, the King Arthur retelling, the art (which is done by the author!), the characters, everything had me hooked and it all left me wanting so much more! The characters are so well developed and the chemistry between Morgan and Aaron is just phwoar 🔥🔥🔥 I love them. Star crossed lovers, finding each other across time, grumpy x sunshine, they are just incredibly swoon worthy. Morgan’s development in particular was wonderful. I think he’s one of my absolute favourite book characters ever now! I loved the LGBTQ+ representation amongst the characters. Daphne, in particular, felt so well written as a trans character, “She says you have her greatest gift: bringing her here, giving her a body where she feels at home, and training her. You gave her back her life. You have her the chance to become who she is.”. All of the characters, regardless of their sexual orientation and gender, are so well written, so thought out and are clearly written with love. The contrast between Camelot and Etna is staggering, and is found it so interesting to see how the characters adapted to their situations. To see how Morgan and Daphne adapt in different ways, and yet it works for each of them. And with the twist at the end?! I can’t wait to see what Etna has in store for Morgan and Aaron together! And to top it all off, the found family, the support system, House Fell is a family that is not related by blood in anyway but has some of the strongest and most heartfelt and loving interactions I’ve ever read. And it absolutely melts me every time I think about it. Everything about Awakening in Sapphire works so so well together and it is clearly such a work of heart by Hawker! I’m very much in love with these characters and this story and I am impatiently waiting for the next instalment ❤️
If you know me you know I’m not big on fantasy, sometimes the build in world gets a little messy for my taste so I usually avoid it, but this book was the absolute exception of every rule I made for myself.
This story follows Morgan waking up in the future after being in Camelot a long time ago and watching it fall, yes, that Camelot. Morgan is now a vigilante/villain trying to survive in the modern world and when he meets officer Aaron Jones sparks fly and well, romance ensures.
This book was really good, I loved the magic aspects of the story, and the very well-developed romance, Aaron and Morgan are adorable together, giving all the grumpy/sunshine vibes we all love and adore.
But that’s not all, the intrigue, the mystery, the drama, the found family, it all works perfectly. I don’t want to give too much away but there’s a lot of twists and turns in the story I did not see coming.
I loved this one and I’m absolutely reading what’s next for these characters.
This book had me gripped from the very start and took me on an extreme emotional rollercoaster.
It's not a retelling of Camelot, but it is Arthurian inspired and set in a sci-fi futuristic city. It is mythical, magical, and downright addictive.
Morgan wakes up in a tomb after 17 centuries asleep, and he has lost his memories. 5 years later, he and Daphne, his apprentice, are fighting to save the inhabitants of their city. Aaron is a police officer, and with his best friend Lexi, they have a lingering interest in Morgan. However, not everyone is as they seem 😉
I loved the story and character building, each with their own tale to tell. This is one of community, soul mates, friendship, destiny but with twists and turns, secrets, and retribution. It was so emotional that I had to take breaks just to compose myself as I couldn't read through the tears 😭
Although it is part of a series, there is a happy ever after, well for now as our characters will be back given the teaser at the end 😎 I can't wait to read the next installment in this outstanding series 🥰
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This a super cute book! It revolves around Moran LaFey and Aaron. Morgan was alive during the time of Camelot and during that time he was in love I with Arthur. Morgan puts himself to sleep for 17 centuries and awakes obviously in a whole new world. He’s a witch who kinda does his own thing. He ends up rescuing Aaron who is a “cop” one look and he knows Aaron is meant to be his. There is so much humor yet a darkness in this book that it’s a really fun read. This book was completely different than what I normally read but I’m so happy I read it. What really got me to read it was Morgan tells Aaron (on their first date) how he turned a serial killer into into a fish and keeps him on his desk, he did this in lieu of killing him, hilarious!
Original, inclusive, magical, and PERFECT IN ALL THE WAYS.
I was not expecting the blend of Arthurian lore and cyberpunk to mesh so well, but alas, Jonathan has given the world Awakening in Sapphire. This is an action-packed fantasy with a twist of romance romance between Morgan and Aaron and their love surviving through time. The call to "Change the Story" is empowering and beautiful.
The banter had me giggling, and I now deem Morgan my new book bestie. He is grumpy but sweet, ferocious, and kind. All the characters are loveable and have such unique voices.
This story was so freaking good. It definitely makes a top 5 read of the year. It was so plot driven. An excellent read. I can't wait to read book two. Highly recommend reading this. Oh and the cover! It's gorgeous 😍. Definitely need a copy.
*edit to add that I just saw that my stars show 3 and that is so incorrect!!! I updated to the 5 stars I know I originally gave it. Not sure what happened or what I did but 5 stars folks!
A dazzling tale of love and good prevailing. Definitely not the Arthurian stories you've come to know. Inclusive and well balanced characters, the main Protagonists are obvious, but every character gets their moment to shine. This is a great start to what's shaping up to be a powerful series. Can't wait to see what comes next for Morgan and Aaron!!
I absolutely LOVE this book! Jonathan’s Arthurian world is unique, inclusive, and magical, the story keeps you hungry for more with each turn of the page. Honestly has FLIED to the top of my favorite books list. Thank you for your masterpiece, Jonathan! It truly is an amazing and beautiful debut novel and I canNOT wait for more!
This story was incredible. I laughed, I cried, I raged, I swooned, I cannot f#%*ing wait for book two. These characters are written in such a beautiful way that you care for them, like friends, without even realizing you were falling for them to begin with. This book really snuck up on me, it went from interesting to wholly enveloping so quickly.
For all that is holy this book is everything I’ve been missing in my literary life. I was nervous at first that I may not be able to fall in love with this book. I was immediately in love and could put it down. I have read this book twice and bought one of every version! Do yourself a favor and take this adventure!! You won’t regret it!
This book is the best book I have read all year! I am completely obsessed with the characters and the story! The writing was absolutely amazing! The plot kept sitting on the edge of my seat and the romance had me kicking my feet. I can not recommend this book enough!
I need book 2 immediately. I laughed, I cried, I gasped. I was absolutely devastated a couple of times. Morgan and Aaron are one of the cutest couples ever! The magic was so can’t wait for what’s next.
After waking up from a sleep that lasted centuries. Morgan wakes up with no memories of his previous life. Live around him changed a lot. Interesting retelling of Arthur in a modern story.
I love this book so much. It reads like a fanfic and I mean that in the absolute BEST WAY. I devoured it, went ahead and bought it halfway through, and will be preordering the rest so that I own them instead of just reading on KU. Hands down one of my favorite books I’ve read this year.
This book was so cute! I didn’t realize it was a retelling but I loved it! The plot the characters the twists! Near the end my heart was shattering and it still is I hope they get a happy ending!
An absolutely wild story from start to finish that really had me guessing the whole time. It was a very well thought out story and most of the storylines were completed with a few open for future books. It was such a cute story that had me swooning. Can't wait for more!
This book was so well written. World building is spot on. If you like magic, supernatural and king Arthur, then this is the book you want. Some very good twists for your reading pleasure.
I struggled with rating this one as I want to give it a 5, but I also want to give it a 2. Here's why:
Story: Morgan Fell (AKA LeFay) is captured and cursed in his own time and wakes up in a futuristic world with large portions of his memory missing. He has to adapt to a world where witches live alongside technology and fight evil in the shadows of a, well, shadowy organisation that seems to run the place. Aaron Jones is the futuristic equivalent of a cop for said shadowy organisation who is trying to save everyone whilst supporting his mother, who is in a coma. A cast of quirky characters bring them together, uncover the horrific actions of a scientist meddling with soul magic and technology, fight zombies, close rifts (actual rifts, not metaphorical ones), start a coven and fall in love. Its Arthurian legend meets sci-fi meets gay romance.
I loved the concept: what if Morgan LeFay was male, not actually the bad guy, and we stuck him in a futuristic world with holes in his memory? Morgan is grumpy and fun and actually a softie inside. He cares deeply for his friends, has trauma from his experiences, but still tries to help. Our first interaction with him is on a heist, where he has to save Shane, sometime mercenary, who has been hexed to do a job.
The story moves relatively quickly through Morgan saving Aaron after a kidnapping, Morgan forming a coven, Morgan and Aaron starting a relationship, and the culminates in a massive battle between good and evil. Morgan's history is sprinkled through, and more is revealed as his memories start to return. Without any spoilers, I will just say Morgan is not the only legend in the story. It was a fun reveal as legends and current timeline blended together.
Shane is an excellent side character, Frey is super fun, and I want them to design me clothes. Daphne was also a fun friend. I did love the light-hearted banter between everyone. There were several funny moments and random unexpected bits - like the fish (not going to explain - you have to read it).
That said: the writing. Far as I can tell, this is the author's debut novel, so I don't want to be super critical as I can see so much potential. But.... so much of this story was told, not shown. What I mean by this was the: he said this, then he did that, then he giggled, then she did something else. There were a few times it dipped into setting the scene, but then it went back to this pattern. I also really struggle reading books with adult characters who constantly giggle. It's irritating and fake and unnecessary.
This book is insta love. It is explained later why that is, but reading through, I struggled to see Morgan and Aaron's connection. It often dipped into the juvenile, with a lot of focus on asking out on a date, and "should we be boyfriends?" And not a lot of getting to know each other by actually interacting. This contrasted weirdly with the spice when it did happen, much later in the book.
Also, pet peeve: if you set your book in a fantasy or sci-fi setting, do not bring across very American customs. Etna, the city this is set, is never really described location wise, so it could be anywhere. But why was there a need to joke about tipping? This really pulled me out of what was happening and threw me as I suddenly thought I'd totally missed where this was set. Tipping is a dumb custom. Don't put it in my sci-fi book, please, and thank you.
Okay, moving on.
Was this a masterpiece? No Was it still a fun, easy read? Yes Is Glimmer the best cat? Also, yes. Will I read the next book when it comes out? Probably.
I've ended up on 3.5 stars for the potential and hope.
i'm not sure where to start this review - with the things i LOVED that made me laugh and smile while reading this story, or the things that made me cringe. So i'll separate them below (without spoilers) and you can read whichever section you want in whichever order:
Things that made me CRINGE: 1 - the narcissism of the MCs relationship (one MC being referred to almost exclusively as belonging to the other MC) 2 - one Mc constantly calling the other MC "boy" (these 2 patterns significantly altered my reading of the MS relationship) 3 - the way, way, way over the top googly-eyed smooshy expositions on the MCs love for each other. this started out okay - just a paragraph or 2 - but became longer and longer each chapter. There are several parts past the 75% mark where it felt like most of a chapter was just one of the MCs going on and on and on about the other, and it read like toxic codependency (not fun to read). 4 - that 1 hardcore sex scene just felt... uneccessary?
Things that made me SMILE and LAUGH: 1 - this is a found family story at its very best (and what a cast)! each member brings something beautiful to the group. The scenes in the story with the larger group where they are all just hanging out are pure luxe! 2 - the world of techno-magic is really great - the delicate politics of witches and commons sharing what little is left of the world is filled with potential that the author fully utilizes. 3 - the action/battle/magic scenes are really well written and a TON of fun to read - like nail biting fun! 4 - there were several points in the story (4? 5?) where i thought "oh no, this is how it's going to end", but then i'd look at my reading completion and it would say 60% or 70% or 80% (you get the idea). i've read several books lately that stretch themselves into a series by ending each book at the first major high/turning point. this is not that book! 5 - the brilliant way the characters of the book handle the existence of the Arthurian legend everyone knows (pure genius) 6 - if that's not enough, i highlighted some of my very, very favorite bits of character dialogue, so check those out!
i had a lot of fun reading this book. there were points where it was too sentimental, sloppy, sticky sweet but i pushed through those to the fantastic love story hiding under it. i've already recommended this book to several people and plan to keep recommending it while i work my way through my TBR to read the sequel!
Let me start off by giving you all a representation of my feelings throughout the book 😁😊😍🫠🤯😱😨💔🙁🤗 It had me all jambled up. If a book makes me scream and take breaks, y'all's best believe I am here to highly recommend it. Okay so this is book 1 to "Once and forever Kings" and what I believe is going to be an amazing series to definitely look forward to.
If you are an Arthurian legend fan, do not hesitate to add this to your TBR, because after the fall of Camelot and it's beloved King Arthur, we have The Morgan Le Fay, portrayed as a man, awakening 1700 years with most of his past memories erased, but fully aware of his powers and identity. As he ventures into this new world with his apprentice. 5 years later we have him out there holding up a bada$$ reputation, a tattooed biker (😉 like if that isn't enough convincing, I don't know what more you want from me 🤣) and coincidentally just so happens that his love interest is none other than Officer Jones (and yes, you read that correctly, a Police officer and a biker - who is allegedly wanted for several crimes 🤣) y'all's know that is already a recipe for disaster..... Or is it ???
Join Morgan and Officer Jones in this amazing Urban - Sci-Fi - Fantasy with an Arthurian twist of a journey as they try to find something worth living for in a world that seems to be falling apart.
Just as they found it within eachother, Morgan's memories return bringing along excruciating pain of a love lost in the old world (let's just say I was screaming along side Morgan, and got to scream in the Authors DMs aswell.) New obstacles arise, past enemies resurface, will their love be strong enough to conquer it all? Even with both past and new friends aligned, will it be enough against the evil that sets out to destroy them? Well we have been promised an HEA (for now apparently 🙈 talk about being kept on my toes) Loved it all 💜 can't wait for the next story, like get me a time machine already, and y'all's can find me in the future... Absolutely amazing...
