The Other Version: Alternate Cover

Rate this book
Do you ever wish there was another version of you out there?

Olivia Petersen had it all. Or so she thought. Until one devastating night, her world fell apart.

Now, Liv Peters is torn between the person she used to be and the person she longs to be, haunted by the past version of herself. From city socialite to loner, she's well aware of the mistakes she's made in her life. Too many things have happened to ever go back.

When Liv finds solace in Cliff Haven, a small seaside town nestled below the cliff she resides upon, she believes she has a chance to reinvent herself. But her plans to live out her meagre existence anonymously are threatened when she meets EJ, a dreamy bartender that wears his guitar around his neck and his heart on his sleeve.

With his flair for music and his love of life, EJ has the ability to make Liv feel alive again. But behind his grey-green ocean eyes, he hides his own pain, and when their worlds collide, their secrets could destroy them both.

If Liv can let go of her demons for good, maybe there's a way out of the darkness. Maybe they can save each other.

Told from the perspectives of then and now, The Other Version is a bitter-sweet love story that delves deep into the human psyche.

Small Town ✔️
Love at first sight ✔️
Dreamy Bartender / Guitarist ✔️
Hidden Truths ✔️
No third party breakup ✔️

Above are just some tropes that you’ll find within this order full book by the ever so talented Eve Blakely, and let me tell you, you WILL NOT regret reading this story.

The first thing that drew my attention to this story was the cover, I thought and continue to think that it is incredibly beautiful and unique. I feel that when I look at the cover, I relate to it somewhat with the butterflies leaving the chest, and that’s not something a cover has ever made me feel. Thy say you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t.

The story is told from two point of views, Olivia’s and Liv’s, the past and the present of one present. I found it extremely interesting and it was a great way to show the development of one person. At first it confused be, but once I caught on, I was in awe of both perspectives, it really helped me to understand the change that Liv went through and just how lonely she must’ve felt during her tough times. My heart ached for Liv and the feelings she experienced. Without giving too much away, how much can one person go through before they break?

EJ is officially my favourite book boyfriend alongside Brendan Taggart… An absolute sweetheart with the biggest heart despite the sadness he feels inside. He is truly the type of person you could call home, and he’ll remain that home forever. From the start, he had my heart, the confidence and cockiness he portrayed was attractive as hell, and yet while he showed those traits, he was as sweet and as gentle as anything. The perfect gentleman and I curse Eve for creating such a perfect specimen THAT DOESN’T EXIST.

If you’ve made it to the end of the review, I beg you go and read this story, your heart will break, you’ll want to cry, you’ll scream at the slow burn between Liv and EJ, you’ll be aching for more.

i got completely swept away by this story! chapter one absolutely put me in its chokehold despite my not-so-good first impression of our heroine. but then the way this story expertly unfolds had me turning the pages and i couldn’t put this book down!!

i loved liv’s determination to leave the past in the past and reinvent herself. i don’t want to say too much about her journey because you must experience it for yourself to fully appreciate it. there is a sweet, tender romance in this book, but it was really liv’s transformation from city socialite to small town waitress that shined.

EJ was the sweetest golden retriever hero! he was so into liv from the start. i really appreciated how patient he was with her and how open he was about his past and feelings. he had some heavy trauma and learned some things about liv that would have sent a normal person running, but i love how he handled everything with grace.

there are so many layers and so much depth to this story, but you really need to experience it for yourself. i am so impressed by this debut and i can’t wait for kristen and henley’s story!

There is no spice which is fine by me as I’m on a palate cleanse! 🙃😂

Kristen and Henley are end game. What happens when he just doesn’t come back one day? What happens to the small town as the rumors spread? This book is a rollercoaster of emotions. I went from sobbing, to laughing. It talks about deep rooted issues, with light hearted humor. I think it could also be considered dark humor, which I’m here for! 😌🫶🏼
It’s more of a thriller/romance is how I explained it to my husband! It keeps you on your toes! It throws in some twists and turns but ends exactly where your heart wants it to! Don’t sleep on @eveblakelywrites I’ve already downloaded book 1 of the cliff haven series! And I CANT WAITTT!! For book 3, to see the growth of these characters! 🥹 I’m already attached to them! Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. Let me know if you read it! Remember to grab your copy on November 29th, which is RELEASE day!! 🫶🏼

“Do you ever wish there was another version of you out there somewhere?” “Another version?” he asks. “Like, a future version?” “Yeah, maybe,” I answer. “Or just an alternate version, walking the Earth somewhere. I sometimes think that maybe she’s out there. This other version of me. She’s me, but she’s brave, and she’s good. And she’s doing everything she’s supposed to be doing.”

Thoughts✨
📚This was such a beautiful book. Usually I like spice in the books I read but this book had just enough that it didn’t take over the whole point of the book. I would give it a 1 on the spice scale maybe even a little less tbh. But that’s why I loved the book.
📚I loved the mental health representation, the past & present each chapter (Olivia being the past and Liv being the present), small town love and the love interest being a musician.
📚Also look at the cover it’s gorgeous 😍
📚This book is the definition of “Right Person, Wrong Time”
📚The circumstances of how they connect to one another is heartbreaking, like literally break my heart into a thousand pieces 😭

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75/5

✨Here’s some amazing quotes from The Other Version✨:

‘We are two damaged souls tethered by an invisible bond, bound together by loss’

‘He feels like coming home and going on vacation all at the same time’

‘There will be many different versions of me in this life, but when I look back on all of them, I want to be able to say they were good ones’

✨P.s Thank you @eveblakelywrites for the book. When I found out I won the giveaway I was so excited 😆✨

❝ I'm still lost, but maybe being found is overrated. Maybe the lesson is in the journey, in the uncertainty.❞🤍
- Eve Blakely, The Other Version

Olivia Petersen used to be a mean, rich snob. But after one devastating night, her view of reality changed, and she decided to start her life anew and reinvent herself.

I'm sure my book review cannot give justice to how beautifully written this book is, but I will do my best and try. I love every single page of this book. I have been putting this book off for days, not because it's boring, but because I don't want it to end. The Other Version is a story about how the past can be ugly, but it does not mean the future should be too. It's about accepting the past, learning from it, and looking at the present with hope.

Liv is a strong-willed character, and I admire her persistence to change into a better version of herself. EJ is a pocket full of sunshine despite the hurt he has endured. I love his kindness and his ability to see the goodness in other people.

Liv and EJ are soulmates, and you can not change my mind. They connect in a certain way that makes sense. There is balance in their relationship, which makes it all the more beautiful. They are a perfect pair, and I am glad they have each other to lean on.

Overall, it was a refreshing, heartwarming, and wholesome story. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to read this novel. ✿(⸝⸝ᵕᴗᵕ⸝⸝)✿

If I had to summarize my review in one word, it would be bitter-sweet.
It's a beautiful story with a tragic past.
Olivia had it all, but now she doesn't.
Liv is a shell of her other version, the past version of herself that haunts her every moment.

Liv finds solace in the quaint town of Cliff Haven, and lands herself a job, friends and hope for the future. She is able to dream for a moment that she can reinvent a new life, one that is far from the past mistakes and tragedy. In this new life, she meets the dreamy EJ, who with his guitar and love of life, makes Liv allow herself to smile again.

However, secrets have a habit of coming to the surface, shattering the fragile bubble Liv has made.

I really love this one. It's so sweet. I loved the characters of EJ, the swoony musician. Liv, broken but hopeful. I loved her Cliff Haven best friends as well. I am SO excited to hear Eve Blakely is currently working on #2 in the Cliff Haven series and I can't WAIT to hear which characters will appear again (I'm hoping we see some!!!)

Thank you to Eve Blakely herself for gifting me a copy of this beautiful book - did I mention just how STUNNING the cover is?! What an amazing debut book from this talented Aussie author.

"You're just afraid I'm gonna be so much better at this than you."
"Ha!" EJ laughs, baring a set of perfect white teeth and it's like watching grey clouds lift from a blue sky.
I did that. I made him happy, even if only for a moment.
"What can I say? You just get me," he says sarcastically, holding a hand over his heart. "Actually, I'm really scared of throwing up in front of you."
"Oh! Gross!" I exclaim and we both laugh.

WHAT. DID. I. JUST. READ?! It was so amazingly written with emotions pouring left and right. This was my first dual POV with past and present versions of the character and for this story, it was SO fitting - a book titled "The Other Version" makes it ironically beautiful. Liv is just in a world filled with people of different personalities and areas to cater for her life, an escape from her troubling past. EJ, a soul who suffers a similar lost but is struggling to share a light with someone finds Liv in the best of times, completing each other in the best way. THE PLOT TWIST WAS AMAZING!! I gasped. In fact, I'd argue that there are two plot twists that were amazingly written and conveyed to the point where I was left stunned. EVE BLAKELY YOU GENIUS <3

“There will be many different versions of me in this life, but when I look back on all of them, I want to be able to say they were good ones.”

Just loved this book. Told from past and present POV, we see just how much Olivia grows and changes and how the events in her life shape who she becomes. And I’m usually really good at guessing the twists, but I never saw this one coming! An emotionally charged read that I highly recommend.

I absolutely adored this book! A beautiful story about love, but also the complexities of guilt, grief and personal growth. The subtext provides a hopeful reminder that even though you will always be connected to your past, it is never too late to redefine yourself and follow your dreams.

The technique of alternating between past and present was brilliantly done- one of the best executions of this sort of style that I've seen. It kept me fully engaged in wanting to know what had happened in the past, but also kept me dying to know what was going to happen with Liv (and EJ) in the future.

This was a book that I couldn't put down from the time I picked it up. I was immediately invested in Liv's journey. I cannot wait to see what Eve Blakely offers us next.

“Sometimes home isn’t a place. Sometimes home has a heartbeat. And I’m finally home”

3.5⭐️

This was my first book I’ve read from an Australian author and it was so refreshing seeing little things like “mom” being spelt like mum haha.

Tropes;
• small town
• dual timelines
• hidden truths and secrets
• plot twist
• guitarist bartender / pianist cafe waitress
• turning of events
• past socialite turning around her life

I loved the cover of these books which was what captivated and drew me to wanting to read them, as well Eve being a lovely Aussie author! I love seeing that!

It follows Liv through her past and present. At first I was confused and then realised Olivia was told from her past and Liv chapters were from her now, as she reinvents herself. My heart pained for Liv and what she experienced, as her school life was toxic and the crowd she surrounded herself were on the high class end of society and treated others below them.. and for a while she was apart of that scene and frothed over that experience, until it became too much and almost suffocating. She endured tough times and fought a lot of identity issues, wanting to hide her past and move on from it but also feel as though she wasn’t deserving enough to be appreciated as the person she was now.

EJ, the small down bartender/ guitarist had an immediate connection and was enraptured by her. His cockiness and his heart was so pure and full of joy. He was sweet, patient and understanding, even when he didn’t know Liv’s full story and what she was hiding. He was such a gentleman! And he deserves so much hype and love.

This book hit with a big twist at the end! I was not prepared and was surprised. But it was a good book overall… at times felt quick and rushed but I got through it and appreciated it over all

beautiful and deep!

A beautiful story of Liv and EJ - bonus points for being set in Australia. Dual point of view for the same character Liv/Olivia which I found took a little to get into but once the story sucked me in I enjoyed it.
The way the book addressed mental health and addiction was overall good.
EJ has such a beautiful soul from the minute we met him!
This storyline has a beautiful depth that is not just about the romance or relationship which I found really cleansing. No spice!

I totally did not predict the plot twist, but loved the way it was handled.

I loved the epilogue and feel like it totally wrapped up the story nicely and I hope to see these characters in the next book.

This is my first book by Eve Blakely, and I found it to be a moving, touching story. We get to met Liv Peters who’s starting over in a new town, as she still duels with struggles from her past. Along the way she meets Ej, a local guitarist to Cliff Haven, he manages to make a connection with her.

From there on the two create a special bond I loved seeing unfold and learn why it was special for them. I love Liv and Ej.

Thank you for writing their story 🤍

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I was expecting a quick and easy read but I found a story that was moving, talking about the harsh reality that too often comes with alcoholism, mental illness, grief and all the trauma that can be caused by it. This is a deep but accessible and beautiful story about a girl that had « everything » but lost a lot, and how she found a way to rebuilt herself afterwards but also, how she truly found herself through it all. Loved it!

“We are the one good thing to come out of all the tragic moments of our pasts and I don’t want to let us go.”

“Sometimes home isn’t a place. Sometimes home has a heartbeat.”

It’s been awhile since a book made me cry and THIS right here just made me bawled my eyes out! 😭 It broke my 💔 and made me cry! 😭 It definitely put me in a roller coaster of emotions, especially the last 3 chapters of the book! It absolutely broke my heart but somehow was hopeful! It’s told in past and present timeline which gives us, as readers a background/ vision of Olivia/Liv’s past. I’m not a big fan of past and present timeline as it confuses me majority of the time but this is just so well written that you can follow along.

Liv’s life was turn upside down after a devastating night which made her realize she needs to reinvent herself and step away to the old her, which is a mean & rich spoiled girl. Along the way she met EJ, a cute bartender/musician. EJ presence around Liv makes her realize what life could be and what living feels like yet again. I love EJ attitude about life, even though he’s carrying this heartbreaking past, he likes to look at life like it’s your last.

The book shows and tells you that there is no point in being dragged down by your past, you have to learn to accept it, learn from it, move forward and looking at the future with so much hope. As what EJ said, “Life is too short!”

Overall, I enjoyed this book! The story is very refreshing and heartwarming and wholesome. Even though it’s a closed door romance it will still give you all the feels! 🥰

Let me begin by saying that I was happy to read this since I really enjoy books with multiple timelines. I also signed up for an ARC of versions of us, so I wanted to finish it before then (I hope I get the ARC ). This was written far too well by the author, Eve Blakely.

Although they were connected, I really enjoyed seeing how each individual dealt with their tragedies on their own terms. Because of how well-developed the characters were in this book, I do suggest reading it. You'll get the impression that there is always time to get our life in order. The plot was excellent; it had me wondering how the stories would link even though I knew they would. EJ, MMC, was so expertly crafted; he was unquestionably sunshine. I also adored Liv. I admired her failures and the way she regained control of her life. Although my heart hurt for her, it also fluttered with happiness when she ultimately succeeded. I found that part of the novel to be the most satisfying.

I do believe that EJ and Liv's arguments were rather forced, but perhaps this was because they got along so well, were so grateful of one another, and were so deeply in love. EJ and Liv were perfect for one another in particular.

I would definitely recommend it and I am really excited for versions of us (Kristen & Henley).

Okay firstly can we take a moment to appreciate this STUNNING cover 😭😍 it’s so pretty!

Secondly, I had seen this book around and then I discovered @eveblakelywrites was hosting a giveaway for a signed copy of her upcoming book… spoiler alert I entered and won 💜 I’m so bloody grateful!

This was such a good read. I don’t want to say too much and spoil anything. It jumps back and fourth between Liv (present) and Olivia (the Other Version of her, past). I’m not a fan of timeline jumping but this was done so well I didn’t struggle at all to keep up.

Both the MMC & the FMC are incredibly strong and have gone through soooo much in life and overcome so much. EJ’s power to see the world in the light carefree way he does was so incredible to read!

Don’t let all the mushy stuff fool you because the last 13% of the book had my anxiety through the roof and had me in tears!

- [ ] The other version- Eve Blakely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the best debut novels by an author that I’ve ever read!! This book absolutely broke me while somehow managing to fill me with hope and restore my ability to believe in redemption!
Liv peters is on a mission to reinvent herself away from everything and everyone she has ever known after her life spirals out of control. Told in dual perspectives, we slowly unwrap the mystery of who Liv strives to be, and why she is so desperate to run as far as possible from her former life as Olivia Peterson. Her plans to stay under everyone’s radar are squashed when she meets EJ, and their journey causes both of them to finally face the past they have been running from and fight for a future they didn’t think they wanted. Full of emotion, twists and turns, and characters you will absolutely fall in love with, “the other version” is a must read!!! I can’t wait for book 2 in the cliff haven romance series!

Oh. My. Heart. I couldn't put this one down. I loved how real and raw the characters were, especially Liv's vulnerability and the personal growth she experiences. I think I want to marry EJ. ⭐️3.5/5 | 🌶️1/5 | Small Town Romance | He Falls First | Emotional Scars | Hidden Truths | Dual Timelines | Mental Health Rep | TW: Death, Grief, Alcoholism

This was such an emotionally charged story of two people bound together by fate and their past. A sweet romance about pain, grief, loss and reinventing yourself. This is told in dual timelines within a 2-year span, that divulges into our FMCs past that led to her wanting to reinvent herself and walk-away from her past life. This is closed-door romance that did not lack swoony moments and sizzling chemistry between our MCs. I loved how the story progressed and how it was more about their individual stories that fueled the romance.

Olivia, a young and rich socialite that had her world turned upside down and start to crumble. She had to go through a lot of pain, anguish, anger, grief, and loss that she needed to reinvent herself at a small town nearby where her former social circle is nowhere near and is not recognized by people. EJ a musician and bartender for his dad’s bar, is a confident, optimistic guy that also carries sadness and grief – he was so understanding, considerate and mature for his age. Little did they know, they had much more in common that they both anticipated, and they started getting to know each other, develop feelings and their worlds start to collide. Blakely did an amazing job in making me feel every emotion that Olivia felt, as well as the connection both she and EJ had.

The only reason why I didn’t give this a higher rating was because I felt like it was a missed opportunity between Liv and her dad. I wish there were more moments between them that would’ve pushed that boundary to a more emotionally driven plot and a huge leap in character development. I wanted that tender moment between them what we only saw twice.

The “before ending” was absolutely brilliant and relatable! I loved how Blakely didn’t just resolve that hero moment to a HEA. The reality of what was said and understood between our MCs was so beautiful and realistic. I just wish that between this timeframe and the ending, there was more enlightenment that pushed for the reading understanding the character development but that’s just me wanting that extra boost emotionally.

“We are two damaged souls tethered by an invisible bond. Bound together by loss.”

Can someone tell me why we aren’t talking about these books more? I read this in one day, it would have been one sitting if I’d been able to stay home. Eve is a beautiful story teller and writer. If you haven’t read this yet, I encourage you to add it to your list ✌🏻

“I just think we should all say what we really mean. I think life’s too short not to. We’re always wasting our words and our moments. I don’t want to waste mine.”

Bits I loved 💭
🥺 it was pouring with emotion, I was also pouring with emotion, my bottom lip quivered and a few tears snuck out multiple times.
❤️‍🩹 the two main characters deal with hurt, loss, and fear; and those feelings bind them, they choose to find and accept love, even when it feels undeserving, even when they’re not sure how.
🎣 the skydiving day and the day by the waterfall, UGH! So sweet and genuine. This was also closed door and I think it was kinda perfect for this book.
⏰ there was a dual timeline and as the suspense of the book comes to a climax, the timeline meets and the chapters shorten. It was clever AF and made the reading experience that much better.
🤲🏻 the aspect of found family as Liv began to find her place in this new version of her.
📝 plot and character focused; it was suspenseful, the plot twists (yes TWISTS) had me sitting up straight, gasping, and well, wouldn’t you know? Couldn’t put it down and I HAD TO FINISH.
🎬 and on that note, the ending was spectacularly done.

Liv & EJ are two broken souls who found each other when they needed love the most. The story is healing. The love is captivating. The growth is inspiring. And the message is clear. The different forms of grief and acceptance vary for everyone but it should be nurtured. Never ignored. Love shows up in mysterious ways and often when we need it the most. I loved the gentleness that EJ gives to balance Liv's personality. I believe everyone deserves an Ej ♡

Liv comes from a wealthy family. She lives a reckless lifestyle, with toxic relationships and makes poor decisions. Over time she becomes bored, isn't happy, and realizes that she doesn't want to be this superficial person anymore. Determined to change her ways, she sets out to be a better version of herself.

Starting a new job, making new friends and meeting a cute bartender named EJ gives Liv hope that she can turn her life around. Alternating between now and then chapters, we slowly get pieces of who Liv used to be. I kept wondering what really happened in her past. These questions kept me intrigued as I was so curious as to what the answers were. Especially because some of these secrets she kept hidden from EJ. When everything was starting to be unveiled, I couldn't read fast enough to find out the truth.

EJ was just the sweetest guy but he did have his own heartbreaking past. The connection between him and Liz was instant and grew slowly to be exactly what each other needed. There was a musical element that bonded them. It created some scenes that really cemented their feelings for each other. Both of them deserved to be happy as they both had been through so much.

This definitely improved as the book progressed, and I enjoyed reading the present tense over the past. The past was written in a cringier way, but it worked in terms of showing Olivia’s immaturity at the time and her growth.

I felt this was a little too ‘insta-love’ for my liking, and I would’ve enjoyed some longer lasting tension before they got together.

I did appreciate how the characters communicated, even when they took awhile to open up. EJ was great at articulately his feelings, and honestly is a stand out MMC.

The growth within Olivia and the concept of becoming a different, better version of herself was great, and I’m really keen to see how this universe progresses.

I signed up to an ARC of Versions of Us and when I was accepted, I knew I needed to read this first. I loved this book so much.

This is a single POV but multi timeline book. Olivia, now Liv, is a wealthy girl who is trying to change herself. I must admit old Liv is rude, entitled and a bit of a b***!! However, she holds something close to her heart which has impacted her in such a way that she wants to be a better person.

Enter EJ. A musician also with a troubling secret. But he is so kind and understanding. I loved EJ and Liv together.

This made me cry so many happy tears at the end.

Now to dive straight into the second book!

I thought this story was going to be a nice cute palette cleanser for me after some heavy reads... I was wrong 🙃

What I thought was going to be a tame, small town romance turned into a journey of self reflection and self discovery. Learning how to accept all versions of yourself, but striving to become a better person everyday.

You have to love yourself before you can fully accept someone else's love. ❤️

The last 80 pages or so broke my heart and had me in tears!

A story about reinventing yourself.
After reading the first chapter i was so glad that Olivia was choosing a different life after tragic events. As i hated her character to begin with.
Through out i felt bitter-sweet.
The only reason this isn’t more stars - it didn’t grab my attention like i usually prefer and it took me forever to read.

4.5⭐️

Wow was this book a roller coaster of emotion! The ending got me right in the feels, and I definitely had a few lil tears, which never happens.

Only knocked off 1/2 a star bc I’m dumb and kept getting confused at the start about what was past and what was present! But THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book, and will eagerly await the next!
