Beauty tames the beast when a marriage of convenience becomes anything but convenient for a duke with dark secrets.

Haunted by a dark secret, Dorian, the Duke of Rath, is consumed by wrath and guilt. The powerful lord will endure any torture to atone for his sins, even marry a perfect stranger—his victim’s little sister—to save her family from ruin.
He vows not to touch her and to protect the innocent girl from his depraved sensual pleasures. But she must stay for one year and follow his strict rules.
When botanist Miss Patience Rose walks down the aisle in her simple dress, with garden soil permanently embedded under her short nails, she lets a little sunlight into Rath’s blackened heart.
Young, innocent Patience drives her older husband mad with her cheery chatter and her irresistible curves.
She’s breaking every one of his rules.
He punishes her...and she likes it.
Love is healing Rath’s soul and transforming his bleak, imposing mansion into a warm home.
There’s just one thing keeping them apart—the ghastly secret that could send him to the gallows. And Patience is putting her brilliant mind to work to uncover it.

If you like a bit of a Beauty and the Beast in your romance, this will hit the spot!

Okay, let's get the obvious out of the way. The names are a *bit* too on point. Yes, all the men are Dukes, which makes up a solid 1/4 of all the total Dukes in England but hey... no worries. Yes, they are all best friends. Yes, they all have some type of seggsual deviancy that requires a club to act out. Sure sure sure. Cool Cool Cool.

Whew! There, I got that off my chest. I just HAD to say it okay?! I'm aware.

But I DID have a good time with this romance. It has a lot of things I love and once I got into the thick of it, I let those criticisms melt away.

Rath enters into a marriage of convenience with the youngest sister of a man he wronged. Hoping to get some small type of redemption and also appease his aging aunt, whom he adores. He is not expecting to find Patience so tempting. She refuses to be cowed by his coldness and that sets him off balance. He definitely doesn't expect her to push his buttons or crave his specific type of discipline.

Patience is a sacrifice on the altar of marriage to save her family from the poor house. Since she lost her older brother, nothing has gone right. She may find her new husband intimidating and alluring but his rules and his temper refuse to let her get close. Good thing she has a will as enduring as her name implies.

Watching them grow closer was beautiful and seeing Dorian grow to trust and love his young wife was just lovely. She challenged him and pushed him. He encouraged her dreams (she loves Botany, who knew?) and makes big changes he never thought possible. They were so sweet together.

Finally, I have to say it... are we *really* gonna have all the heroine's names be the virtue to our hero's vice? Rath & Patience, Luhst & Chastity, will Pryde be with a.. Modesty, perhaps? I don't know.. it's a bit too...much.

Like I said, once I got into it, I was into it, but it's a bit too on the nose at times.

Narrated to perfection by Shane East and Justine Eyre. I can guarantee that I rated this book higher because of this talent. The book was good and I was entertained but it was SOLD to me by this pairing. I'll listen to this whole series because of them.

4 stars
2.5 on the spice scale

*I originally rated this book 2 stars, then changed it to 3, so 2.5 stars sounds about right

Forget realism, forget nuance, forget subtlety. This is from the sledgehammer school of writing, where the author comes in swinging hard, throwing heavy subjects around and hammers the same points over and over, hoping to get a solid hit in.

Sometimes she does. There are parts of this that are genuinely interesting and even occasionally moving, although it misses feeling authentic or deeply moving by a rather wide margin.

And I’m still uncertain whether the play on the duke’s and his six friends’ names suggesting the seven deadly sins is clever or ludicrous. Both?

DNF around 20-something percent.

I think this had potential but the author couldn't figure things out. In the beginning, you get very From Hell vibes (that movie with Johnny Depp and Heather Graham). It seemed like the book was going to be very good and angsty and potentially dark, but then you find out the hero and his friends all have names reflecting the seven deadly sins but with a slight twist on spelling (rath=wrath, pryde = pride.... you get it) and that was just a little too on the nose for my tastes (i.e., 🧀🧀🧀 AF). Then, the book takes on a very insta-lusty vibe that made me think it was going to turn all erotica-ish. I think the author couldn't pick a lane and that turned me off and the play on names with the sins was also way too cheesy for me to move past.

Hopefully this book will work well for others.

what do you do when you kill a guy ✨accidentally✨ because you saw him assaulting a woman? you marry his sister because you’re tortured by your guilt!!! god i love a good historical and this one was just perfect.

scarred tortured hero. virginal and extremely intelligent heroine. forced marriage where the hero swears he will never fall in love! plus some teaching lessons and spanking!

this was like beauty and the beast with a sprinkle of fifty shades - had a great time

REVIEW

Rating: 2.75/5
POV: 3rd person, dual
Heat Level: 4/5
Tropes: HR - Regency; Class Difference; Age Gap (14 years); Marriage of Convenience; Virgin FMC; Scientist FMC (Botanist)
Kinks: I thought spanking but then it ended up only being 1 scene :(

Likes:
* I really enjoy the marriage of convenience or arranged marriage trope in HR when they get married like within the first 10 pages of the book. So we get to enjoy them getting to know one another already together. This happens in this book
* The FMC. What a sweet, intellectually, strong, young girl. She's 18 but honestly I felt was very wise. She has obviously some immaturity when it comes to emotions but by the end of the book she has character growth in that regard

Dislikes:
* Biggest book pet peeve for me is when the character is profusely (it was literally mentioned over 5 times in this book) described as one way, i.e. BLONDE, yet the cover model is the completely opposite, in this case brunette! I had to take away a whole star for that because really???
* The MMC. Wow he just sucked. If it was today's day and age he'd either be diagnosed with bipolar-ism or he's be accused of being abusive, emotionally.
* I really didn't like his little sinful band of brothers. I get the MMC is the first to get married in their little group but seriously they all had terrible advice and every interaction he had with them he was pissed of at them.

Conclusion:
This book had so much potential for me. It has a trope I love in HR and it was played out exactly how I prefer. With the MC's getting married within the first 10 pages of the story.

However, the MMC was a huge disappointment. He's incredibly selfish, angry, hurtful, and I could go on and on. He of course comes to his senses after the 3rd act breakup but like I don't know it felt a little too late. He was so wish washy with his moods and anger (which is why I said I feel as if he could be diagnosed with Bipolar in this day and age). Maybe it could've worked better had this been written in 1st person pov.

The FMC carries the story. She has character growth that makes sense for someone who is young and gets thrown into a high ranking class position from nothing. She's also incredibly patient with her brute of a husband who really didn't deserve her softness.

I struggled to rate this but I couldn't shake that a solid 3 stars for some reason felt generous but at the same time I didn't completely dislike this?
No idea if I will read anymore from this series. The seven sin men's names really annoyed me, lol.

2.75-3/5

Haunted by a dark secret, Dorian, the Duke of Rath, is consumed by wrath and guilt. The powerful lord will endure any torture to atone for his sins, even marry John Rose, his victim’s little sister to save her family from ruin. He vows not to touch her and to protect the innocent girl. Love is healing Rath’s soul and transforming his bleak, imposing mansion into a warm home.
The first in a new series & a very good series starter, which is well paced & has strong characters, Dorian is one very angry guilt ridden man & Patience is well named but she’s also a breath of fresh air & approaches every situation with a smile & she gradually chips away at his heart. There are also very interesting secondary characters especially the other six Dukes of Sin who are all aptly named, I look forward to their stories. I also really liked Dorien’s sister Chasity & after a rocky start how she & Patience bonded. I loved this story & found it very hard to put down. I was intrigued as to how Dorien would be redeemed
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

Thank you so deeply to the author for sharing a BETA version of this book with me!!

“All he needed was to maintain his self-control. And not imagine his sweet, virginal wife moaning with pleasure as he thrust into her…”

“He wanted everything he did to her to be her first.
Her only.”

“ He didn’t feel like a man anymore. He felt like fire itself. And she was his fuel, his air, his embers, and his heat. God, he had to have her.”

This book was absolutely marvellous !! I loved every single moment of reading it !!! Words are not enough to describe how obsessed I got while reading it!!! My goodness !!! Beauty and the Beast. Arranged marriage. Strangers to lovers. Grumpy sunshine. Forced proximity and undeniable tension. If you need more, you only need to get on Dorian and Patience’s story!!! They will turn your life upside down!! They reminded me so much of Preston and Penelope from the Dukes and Secrets series and knowing that all the characters from those ok are mentioned here … it gave me such a bittersweet, nostalgic feeling .. I loved it !!!! The overwhelming emotions, the frustration and the pain I felt while reading this book … it definitely left me all hot and bothered multiple times !!! Wow !!! The sweetness they both shared and the wildness they can recognise in each other’s souls … an unexpected match that starting from zero turned into something so much more important !!! And Dorian … that man knows how to do it !!! He knows how to make you fall in love with him, despite his personality and his tendencies to wrath!!!
And there were some side characters that caught my attention … I can’t wait for their story to come forward!!! A great beginning for a series, I think I can expect even more from !!!

“She was right in his arms.
But forever unreachable.”

“Goddamn, woman, you’re the biggest temptation I’ve ever had to resist.”

“This woman felt like his salvation.
But one day she very well may also be his damnation”

Mariah Stone is a new author for me and this is only my 7th book by her. I read her Dukes and Secrets series and couldn't put Book 1 down it was so good, so decided to get the complete series. I don't read book descriptions so I have no idea what I'm reading when I start a book but I assume it will be about some of the characters from previous books :). Makes for a more interesting read, I think. :)

I loved this story from the beginning. It really had me hooked. I loved Dorian and Patience. Kind of gave off a little 50 Shades of Grey vibes as far as his mind set and her innocence. Every time Dorian called her “sweet girl:, it reminded me of Derek calling Penelope “baby girl” from Criminal Minds. Don’t know why, it just did. 😊 I liked this story concept. Great couple, great read.

This is the first historical romance by Mariah Stone that I've read, and I truly enjoyed it. I am definitely looking forward to the rest of her new series, Seven Dukes of Sin, where each duke epitomizes one of the seven deadly sins. Dorian Perrin, the eponymous Duke of Rath, is haunted not only by his miserable childhood due to his father's cruelty but by an "incident" twelve years in the past, when at the age of twenty, he was unable to control his wrath during a duel. Upon hearing that the man's family has been struggling financially and become destitute since then, Dorian hopes to atone for his sin by paying off the family's debts and marrying one of the man's six sisters. He decides to marry the youngest of the sisters, Patience, without ever meeting her, and while the two seem ill-suited to each other initially, they forge a tender bond that grows and blooms with each passing day. But for how long can Dorian keep his secret from his new wife when he is overwhelmed by fear, guilt and rage?

This is a well-written novel, and Stone has some beautifully written passages that made me want to read more slowly just to savor her imagery and prose. Cleverly, she reveals aspects of the duke's character that evoke hints of both Dorian Gray (The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde) and Edward Fairfax Rochester (of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte), given these two men's very dark secrets. There were a few times though when, for me, Dorian's guilt felt somewhat overstated and times when Patience seemed much more mature than might be expected for her eighteen years of a sheltered life. I also thought the resolution to the story was perhaps too quick after so much of the narrative had been devoted to the question of whether Dorian could be redeemed if his secret became known to Patience and her family.

Still, this was an angsty, gripping read, and given that its characters tie to others seen in previous series, such as Lord Spencer Seaton and his wife, Joanna, it has made me want to go back and read Stone's previous series, Dukes and Secrets, as well as continue on with this current one. An unfolding romance between Lucien and Chastity next? Yes, please!!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from Hidden Gems, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.

I really enjoyed Duke of Rath by Mariah Stone. I think this will be a great series all around and I'm looking forward to some of the other Duke's books. I liked how this was a beauty and the beast, redemption arc sort of book. Yes, Dorian came across as a very gruff and aggressive male in the beginning; however, I loved seeing him open up more and more with Patience and turn into the person he was at the end of the book. I felt like Mariah Stone did an amazing job with his character and showing his growth in this book. But also Patience's growth as well. Her character grew a ton throughout the story and I appreciated that as well. This book was a very easy book for me to just sit down and read. I felt like I read it fairly quickly and enjoyed it a lot. If you love a good spicy historical romance where the characters marry each other and are complete strangers with one of them keeping a huge secret, then you'll enjoy this story.

Mariah Stone s new series Seven Dukes of Sin gets off to a strong start. This book is perfect for those who love their darker, passionate historical romances as it's got quite a lot of drama and angst. In fact during periods of the book you wonder how the author will find a solution to the biggest challenge that faces this couple. She of course does.

The Duke of Rath, fits his title with a self destructive side and anger management problem. Luckily the author allows us to see tender and caring moments that show he is much more complex than first appears. The heroine Patience is well named, her scientific, determined and enquiring mind move the story forward. Also I loved her bond with her new sister in law Chasity.

There is very much a beauty and the best type feel to the romance between them. And involves lust at first sight. I do think the psychological issues of the anger the Duke faces is maybe resolved a bit too neatly at the end after a messy and dramatic climax. Although when he hits rock bottom its very believable. His friendship with Lucien is strong amd nice to see.

As with Mariah Stone you have wonderful side characters and hints at future plots, show you end up looking forward to the next installment. You also get to characters from her former series which is a joy. I think fans of the author will greatly enjoy this book and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Duke of Rath
Anguish, thy name is Rath! One of my favourite elements in romance is angst. I love the tingles, the chills and the anticipation that comes from that bitter anguish and angst. Life is not all sunshine and roses and never has that been clearer than in the Duke of Rath. Dorian is a haunted man drowning in his own demons. Torturing himself to escape his guilt. Only when he realizes that he can atone by helping Patience and her family does he begin to see the pain he is inflicting on himself. Nothing makes the darkness more apparent than the appearance of light. Patience is the light that can drag him out of his despair but their journey is brought with torment, anguish and guilt. In order to make her happy, he must face his demons. Like in life, everything requires balance and Patience’s sunshine personality needed a dose of darkness too. They truly are the perfect balance to each other, or at least they learn to be. She brings the light, and he brings the strength. I was enraptured by their story. Their passion, their growing trust and their acceptance. This story has darker elements but so many life lessons, the biggest being that all things require balance.

First of the series that looks into how wrath controls the life of a man born from a lifetime of cruelty. Only she can bring him peace and light and contentment and yet the couple has a sword of Damocles over their happiness. Darkness, love, redemption and passion makes for a truly engaging read.

Thanks to BookSprout for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is the first of a new series by Mariah Stone, with some connections and references to her previous series, Dukes and Secrets, but can be read independent of the same. In this one, Dorian, the Duke of Rath, has been hiding a secret for many years. It tears away at him, and he has difficulty managing his own emotions, and is constantly punishing himself physically and emotionally over it. This was on top of a tortured childhood with an abusive father, which has all contributed to Dorian not being able to healthily manage his anger and emotions.

It comes to his attention that one of the consequences of his actions from years before is the ruination of the Rose family from the death of their only son. To help atone for his sins, Dorian offers to marry their youngest daughter, Patience Rose. He has no intentions of having a true marriage, intending it to be an act of atonement, where they would be wed, live together for a year, he would deal with the Rose's debts, save their current home, and at the end of a year, Patience would be free to leave him, and he would grant them an estate that would be self sustaining.

Patience is a young, intelligent woman with a love of botany and a passion for growing and hybridizing roses. Never would she have expected to become a Duchess, seeing how her family was shunned after the scandal of her brother's death. But seeing how marriage to the Duke of Rath, unexpected though it was, would help her family, she willingly makes the sacrifice.

What he did not expect was that Patience would be the sunshine that would shine light into his dark soul, causing hope, and love to bloom. From first sight, Dorian found his heart opening to Patience, and he becomes in deep conflict as he finds himself falling in love with her. But he becomes ever fearful that when she discovers the truth of his past with her brother, it would tear her and her family apart and it would destroy their growing love, and his hope for happiness with her.

A very dramatic, emotionally fraught romance that has themes of marriage of convenience, grumpy-sunshine, love at first sight, hidden secrets, lots of family drama, and bluestocking vibes that I really enjoyed. Dorian is a good man, who made mistakes and beats himself up for them, literally in some cases, and carries a lot of anger, guilt, self-hate, and unresolved emotions about his past that Patience helps to open up and heal. I did enjoy the connections and references to the previous series as I did enjoy Dukes and Secrets quite a bit. I am a bit skeptical of the 7 dukes brotherhood and how the stories will play out, but I did enjoy this first foray into it and am looking forward to the second book, as there are broad strokes throughout indicating what that story will be.

4.5 stars out of 5..... BUT................

I hate to say this - but I am going to judge this book by it's cover....

It is objectively a striking cover, with a beautiful woman.

BUT. I have to say that I hate it. Hate it passionately.

Why???

Because the female love interest of the story - Patience Rose (and all the Rose family for that matter) is a small, fair, blonde with fair English rose coloring... this is how it describes his first vision of her, at their wedding, " a small, sweetly rounded, blond figure with large blue eyes and a perfect, angelic face."

The who the F### is on the cover????

The first reference I found to a golden skinned brunette in the story is here...

"And then they appeared. Lilith was a tall, willowy woman in her late twenties, with a mane of shiny black hair. Her big dark eyes were catlike—the hooded eyes of a true seductress—and they were trained on him. She was dressed in a crimson gown, which dipped low and left little to imagination."

Guess who this is referencing? The paid sex worker at Elysium that Dorian visited on his wedding night. WTF????

So why the F### is the cover featuring the prostitute and not the MFC of the romance?

Drop the rating to 4 stars out of 5 for sheer unadulterated stupid mismatch of cover to story.

Good story - WRONG cover.

I wish I could give this book 10 Stars!⭐️

Dorian and Patience ❤️🔥❤️
Such a well written book with a page turning storyline! I love the names of the seven Dukes in this series.
This is the Duke of Rath’s story Dorian, his life is filled with guilt and remorse over a secret he and his friends are keeping for him.
Patience Rose is the youngest sister of his victim. She turns out to be a breath of sunshine. She is beautiful and sweet, with a lot of compassion for him. She senses his pain but doesn’t know why he feels that way.
She turns out to be the cure for his wrathful and tormented behavior. As the storyline progresses there are plenty of interesting secondary characters. The book also has well written steamy love scenes. Therapy ending is beautiful and heartwarming.
I loved this book so much I read it in one day and cannot wait for book two!

This was my first book by Mariah Stone, and it definitely won't be my last. Dorian is haunted by his past and marries Patience to assuage some of his guilt. Dorian was a tortured and scarred hero. Patience was a ray of sunshine. They were opposites that were meant for each other. I adored this story of forgiveness and finding your happily ever.

I knew going in that I was going to enjoy this book. It takes place in the same world as the previous series so some of the Seaton characters appear or are mentioned. I was a bit taken aback by the names of these new characters. I couldn't believe it when I started being able to predict people's names. I then facepalmed when I realized what the name of the series was!

This first book is about Dorian, the Duke of Rath, who has a terrible temper. He gets paired with a lady named Patience… See where this is going?

Poor Dorian was an emotional basket case thanks to his father's unspeakable cruelty. Racked with guilt, he offered marriage to Patience sight unseen in an attempt to repair the damage that he did to her family years earlier.

Patience didn't know why the duke chose her. She agreed because the marriage would solve all of her family's financial woes. She was bitterly disappointed to learn that Dorian had no actual desire to interact with her.

The relationship of Patience and Dorian had a difficult beginning. Affectionate by nature, Patience frequently ran up against Dorian's hostility. It was definitely a battle of wills. Happily, lightness triumphed over the darkness even after Dorian's horrible secret was revealed.

I received a free ARC from BookSirens and this is my honest review.

Shane East - Not even for you, I'll finish this train-wreck. And what's with the stupid AI picture in the cover of a brunette? She's a blonde!!!

The premise of this book is so ridiculous that only by pretending this was set up in an alternate universe could I stomach reading it. Yes, an alternate English Universe where all Nobility titles are traits but misspelled i.e. Duke of Lhust, Earl of Chans. And not only that, but the Nobles in question are imbued with the trait i.e. Pryde is proud, Rath is wrathful, etc.

I'm not kidding...but I wish I was...this made even less sense than when the WARDen did it with BDB.

Patience's family is on the brink of going to debtor's prison and Rath feels responsible for their plight. Something happened 12 years ago when Rath and his friends were at Oxford that caused their penury. Instead of actually paying their debts anonymously and giving the daughters a small dowry (he's a powerful Duke after all) he decides to marry the youngest of the 6 daughters (eww...the 18-year-old) because she'll be biddable. 3 days later, they get married (without meeting each other first) while she wears n OLD GOWN.

Nobody but the Rath and his friends know what happened at Oxford but the 3 nincompoops can't help but discuss the situation in public where of course, Patience overhears and start asking questions. But instead of making a plausible excuse, he refuses to say anything and prohibits her to ask questions, which of course, makes her hella suspicious.

The piece de resistance is when the Duke finally deflowers his wife in a sitting room and the housekeeper barges into the room. She then proceeds to ask them questions while he's still INSIDE HIS WIFE. (And yes, the housekeeper could see that he was still plugged-in so to speak.)

This was it for me. And if this is an example of the author's writing, I'm not even trying any other book by her again.

Patience & Dorian - she’s the innocent spark to ignite this powder keg of a man and blow his fortress of guilt and pain to smithereens - and it was a magnificent show!

When a haunted duke - scarred, full of wrath and eaten alive by his sin - and an angelic botanist - vivacious and clever - enter a marriage of convenience with very strict rules - his rules - she believes it’s to save her family, and he knows it’s the sweetest form of torture he can inflict upon himself. He won’t stray and he won’t allow his depraved lust, nor his secret to ruin her innocence.
But when she, miserable and lonely, starts breaking his rules, he’s forced to punish her… and to his surprise she likes it. His darkness doesn’t scare her. She’s fearless and her light pierces his frozen heart, but her boundless curiosity will break her - and them - if she ever learns the truth.
And truth always finds the light…

He’s 32, she’s 18 and her youthful naivety counters his brooding bitterness marvellously.
He's this untouchable, wounded, possessive, protective, touch-her-and-die mountain of a duke. Always in control, because when he loses it, people die. And she’s this luscious little fairy, the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen - joyful, kind and caring with a pure heart and an inquisitive soul - and she breaks him in all the best ways, as love is an emotion you cannot control and that scares him witless.

Such a devastatingly beautiful and moving romance! I love these two and their heartrending journey so much! This tale is dark and twisty, laced with fear, rage and regret, but there’s also tenderness, love and of course, some delicious steam. A strong plot that just flows so smoothly through a myriad of emotions and events.
It ripped at my heart, pulled its every string and left me feeling blissful.
Love is a battlefield, it’s all in the detail and I simply adore this author’s style and colour!
An exceptional read and an exquisite start to Mariah Stone’s new series Seven Dukes Of Sin!

2.8/5 ⭐
2/5 🌶️

Lastima.

Duke of Rath

I really enjoyed this book, especially Dorian, who was so broken and how Patience saved him. Can't wait to read the next sequel

I really enjoyed reading this first book in series. It is an excellent story with a very grumpy/angry older hero and a younger sunshine heroine.

Dorian Perrin, the Duke of Rath is a very angry, guilt ridden character. His whole life has made him angry and a terrible event twelve years ago causes him to be tormented by guilt and self hatred. Buried deep underneath his scary exterior lies a good man if the flames of his anger can be extinguished. He has six loyal friends, all dukes who have formed a bond and friendship so strong that each can depend upon the others no matter what. He also has a loving aunt and sister he has to look out for.

Patience Rose is the youngest of six daughters. Her older brother John killed himself twelve years ago, causing the Rose family financial and personal problems as John was studying to be a lawyer and would eventually bring in money to help his family. His death brought debt to his parents and the community where they lived ostracised them due to the manner of John’s death. The daughter’s chances of marriage are slim but the family always try to have a positive and happy outlook on life no matter what happens. They shut away any bad feelings they have and keep smiling.

The Rose family cannot believe their luck when Mr Rose comes home from London announcing that the Duke of Rath has asked for Patience’s hand in marriage and he will also pay off the family’s debts. They marry without meeting beforehand.

Both Dorian and Patience are attracted to each other physically from first sight at the church altar. His grumpiness is met with her positive happiness every time. She is not afraid to ask him questions about anything that she is curious about. She has a scientific mind and a passion for botany.

Although Dorian is attracted to Patience he knows he has to stay away from her. He arranges for their lives to be separate but he underestimates his upbeat wife who seems to have no fear of him.

As they become closer, against his wishes, her happy disposition seems to be putting out the fiery anger in Dorian and he starts to become a calmer man. Patience’s curious personality and tenacity for answers means that she might discover his darkest secrets and their marriage may not survive.

This book was such a great read. It was so well written and detailed. There was a lot of personal growth of Dorian and Patience, more so Dorian who becomes a much better person until events happen that cause his anger to explode again. It seems in the end, they both save each other, which I didn’t see coming.

I loved reading how Patience and Dorian change and grow throughout the story. There are many great secondary characters, especially the other dukes, who I’m looking forward to reading more about. Dorian’s aunt and sister and Patience’s family were lovely characters. There’s steamy scenes of open door intimacy, angst aplenty and a gorgeous Irish wolfhound named Titan (who doesn’t love pets in the plot).

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves a great grumpy hero who turns soft and gentle with the love of a ray of sunshine but also loves a book with angst and excitement.

There are memories of Dorian’s cruel father and the way he treated his children which may be a trigger for some people.

Dorian, the Duke of Rath feels he must punish himself for past sins even if it means marriage to his victim's little sister. Although he tries to keep her at a distance, Patience drives Dorian mad with her cheery sunshine ways, not to mention her attractiveness. But Patience is a scientist at heart and she is working to figure out a mystery but she just might figure out Dorian's secret instead.

This is very Beauty and the Beast, grumpy/sunshine, older/younger love, insta-lust wrapped up with a mystery that keeps you going to the end. What I absolutely loved was how the author made you feel the characters and their lives, the reader is like a third person right there as the scenes unfold. It is so very well written with lots of character development, a great cast of secondary characters, and details that help the reader envision the scene. There is also plenty of angst and drama, open-page intimacy, and some memories of abuse but all of this helps to further the story and in my opinion, is needed.
The one little negative I have about this story is how Dorian's 'incident' or reasoning behind his mental torment was handled. It was worked up throughout the whole story but when revealed didn't seem to have the impact it should have to the reader. To me, it was blown out of proportion with a lot of drama.
This book is highly recommended and the entire series looks very promising.

The first in Mariah's new regency series and it doesn't disappoint.
Dorian The Duke of Rath is haunted by guilt over a tragedy that left him with a mangled hand and a man dead . He decides that in order to assuage the guilt he carry's he will help his victims family's finances by marrying the youngest daughter, he didn't expect the changes this would bring

Miss Patience Rose suddenly finds she is to marry The Duke Of Rath, and because it will help her family finances she agrees , but she also finds her husband has laid down rules she must obey . The trouble with rules is they are often broken , and slowly but surely in breaking the rules Patience manages to break down Dorians defences and show him that love can heal everything .
Another wonderful story from Mariah and I can't wait for te next one .

This was my first book by Mariah Stone and I’m in love! This was such a great retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I can’t wait for the next book!

The Duke of Rath has had a really horrible upbringing hence why he can’t control his anger. Which gets him into a lot of trouble.

Ms. Patience Rose has grown up in a family full of love but one that pretends everything is ok when it isn’t.

The Rose family falls on hard times and the Duke of Rath offers to marry Patience which no one can understand why. But he has his reasons and they are very dark.
