TRIGGER This book contains graphic violence, gore, sex, vomit, and other acts that some may deem offensive. Reader discretion is advised.
Adam and Tilly, a recently married couple, vacation to a peaceful cabin situated by a serene lake to spend a week of relaxation. The trip offers Tilly a chance to work on her latest book while enjoying the tranquillity. However, their plans are disrupted by a series of strange events that occur shortly after their arrival. Are they being driven into madness, or are they victims of something much more sinister? As they struggle to grasp their new reality, their resilience and commitment to each other are put to the test, determining whether or not they can truly survive.
I don’t have a ton to say on this book. It was an intriguing concept. And yes, it was extreme with both the sexual content and body horror. A bit too much for such a short story with not enough varying degrees of either. I could not connect with Tilly or Adam as our lead characters. They were written to serve a purpose, which they did, but there was no depth beyond that objective. The ending was really awful. Pretty much what took my rating down by probably a full star. Tons of great build and it was somehow all ruined within the last two pages. There were several other, more significant and sensible ways to conclude this story, but what we got was not good. Splatterpunk, and even traditional horror, fans may or may not take to this one.
Last night, I finished what is probably the single most batshit crazy book I've ever read. R.J. Powell's MADNESS IN TANDEM is hard to define in normal terms, aside from the fact that it is absolutely, certifiably SPLATTERPUNK on steroids.
A happy, recently married couple rents a vacation house on a lake, and strange things begin to happen. As their situation grows ever more bizarre, the reader is left scratching their head as to just WTF is going on. Soon, strange things become very **dark** things, and absolute madness unfolds in all of its glorious, tin-foil hat majesty!
It isn't until you get to the final pages that you finally see what's going on, and suddenly everything you've read before then comes into focus. To say this book pulls the rug out from under you would be an understatement of cosmic proportions. It pulls the **planet** out from under from the very beginning, and you're left tumbling through the void at chaotic, nightmarish speed, and just when you're convinced you'll be forever flung through the cosmos like a wet ragdoll, Ryan swings the planet back around and shotputs it into your face with her patented wink and smile. We reenter the atmosphere at a roughly 40-degree angle, moving at 7.8 kilometers per second, our face glowing, flesh, bone, and eyeballs vaporizing at around 3000 degrees Fahrenheit as we rush with a tail of purest fire toward the very Earth that was yanked out from beneath us, now seeing it all in perfect, crystalline clarity a half-second before we explode with the force of a thousand nuclear bombs and render extinct 98% of all living things and create a crater that will be studied billions of years from now by the next intelligent species to inherit this rock.
Does that sound utterly batshit insane? Well, so is this book, and I loved every second of it! You WILL BE confused up to the end, but never fear, everything makes sense when it's wrapped up, and you're in for a wild ride on the way to THE END.
Highly recommended and should absolutely be considered as a contender for the Splatterpunk Award.
This little novella is a quick read at only 99 pages but packs the punch of a 300-page book!
I sat down and began reading only to fund myself, wanting to flip the page to see what was going to happen next!
The author balanced out the gore, violence, sex & suspense wonderfully! Had this been a movie, I would have been on the edge of my seat for its entirety!
this was a quick one with lots of sex and gore. i cant say i was too invested in the characters but it’s only a short read. i was really enjoying it but i felt the ending was not what i wanted it to be!
This short novel about a young married couple going insane while staying at a lake house is not for the faint of heart. For fans of extreme horror this is a tasty treat. It's well written, gripping, violent, nasty, and the ending is a delightfully sinister twist. I highly recommend Madness in Tandem by RJ Powell.
Adam and Tilly are intending to spend a quiet week in a cabin by the lake, where Tilly can focus on her writing and Adam, his photography. But what starts as a simple holiday quickly spirals into a nightmare as they are slowly driven to madness. Is it the house, the location, or is something far more sinister at work?
At 96 pages Powell barely wastes a sentence in getting this moving, from its spicy opening through to is devastating conclusion (one that adds a distinctly metaphysical element to the proceedings), Madness in Tandem gets along at a furious pace. The ending is a little abrupt, but overall it is a masterclass in show, rather than tell, and I felt like I was in the cabin with these characters, losing my mind along with them.
What these two people end up doing to each other is egregious, but the legwork the author does in such a short space of time to build them as real people is exceptional, and the dialogue sparkles with an engaging, witty humour that had me laughing out loud more than once.
Romantic, gory, gross, and thoroughly mind-bending, Powell’s debut novella ticks all the boxes of a memorable and exciting read, one that can be devoured in a single sitting. Just don’t read the first chapter in public!
In Madness In Tandem Adam and Tilly are a recently married couple enjoying their vacation in a remote cabin. Their peace is disrupted by a series of odd and inexplicable events.
This book is absolutely vile. I loved it! My reaction to some of the scenes was absolutely visceral. I’m greatly looking forward to reading more by this author.
I couldn’t have asked for a better book to wrap up woman’s history month. Come celebrate this new voice in horror with me by picking up your own copy. Don’t be fooled by the gorgeous cover! This book is disgusting!
This was one of the weirdest books I think I've ever read but THAT ending! I genuinely felt at one point that I was in some weird time warp. Constantly trying to figure out what the hell was going on with these 2 main characters. There was excellent gore scenes in here. Some spice. Even at one point combining the two. Very well done.
It was very dark and very graphic and super gross but that’s what I was expecting from this type of book. It was actually pretty emotional and I thought the pacing was really good and overall it’s a great piece of work but it just really needed better editing!
This was a totally unexpected read for me. I go into the majority of my reads blind, and I’m really glad I did so with this spicy little novella. A couple goes on a lake house retreat & completely begin to unravel. This was such a unique story, and a refreshing concept to splatterpunk. When it first began, I had no idea which direction it was going to go, but everything quickly turns to chaos. The gore in this was over the top and in some scenes, I felt physically ill. Perfect! The eyeball scene will live rent free in my head.
The only thing, as a reader, that I wished I had more of was further explanation on what could be happening to the couple as there was this kind of supernatural element - it was super interesting and I wanted to know more about it.
Powell’s storytelling is sexy yet unsettling and always leaving you wanting more. Certainly a refreshing new name in the genre & I very much look forward to reading more of her work in the future! Absolutely an author that everyone should have on their Splatter radar. Impressed by this debut!
This is a must read! It’s a very balanced short story you can read in one day. There’s enough story going on between the characters, enough wtf is going on, it has disgusting moments, sad and sweet moments. It’s perfect. What really happens to our so in love couple on their getaway? Who is messing with them and will their love survive the hell they are about experience?
If you like books that have trigger warnings, this is for you! I was getting a little anxious trying to figure out wth was going on, but I did not expect that ending!! WTF!!!
This story will stick with you long after you're finished reading it. Ryan J Powell has presented the world with a dark take full of mystery throughout, and will hit readers with scenes that are as beautifully detailed as they are disturbing. The content that pairs with this story is reminiscent of a Twilight Zone episode if Clive Barker was ever allowed to write one. I highly recommend this quick journey through carnage from this incredibly promising new author!
This novella centres around a newly married couple, Adam and Tilly, as they are relaxing at a secluded lakeside cabin. What begins as a peaceful retreat quickly unravels into a surreal nightmare, with strange occurrences testing both their sanity and relationship.
OHMYMFGOD! THERE ARE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE THIS BOOK! let's just say I saved the best for last, and I think RJs fast becoming a firm favourite. This book had the PERFECT BALANCE of gore, violence, sex and suspense, making this another novella I devoured in one sitting.
This novella is only a little over 100 pages, and yet it has all the makings of an epic novel. There was so much more that R J could've done to take it over the edge, but I'm still happy with the direction she took it. It was fast-paced, with plenty of suspense to keep the reader engaged, and is a complete and utter mind fk.
The atmosphere starts off peacefully and is utterly serene. But then it quickly escalates, bringing with it a tension that quickly unsettles you, gripping you until the very end.
It is not until you get to the end of the book that you realise what is going on and that everything you've read so far starts to make more sense. I'm not gonna lie, this book was very confusing and I'm sure a lot of people who have read this book can agree but I promise you, stick with it because everything all comes out in the end, and that light bulb will go off in your head and you'll go WTF, yep, that makes a whole lot of sense to me now!
Madness in Tandem, an engaging and thought-provoking story, will be the PERFECT READ for those that enjoy extreme horror, with splatterpunk vibes making it perfect for the Halloween season!
This is now the fifth book I’ve read by R.J. Powell, and honestly? They just don’t miss for me. Madness in Tandem was a complete mind-bend from start to finish and an easy five-star read.
I genuinely thought I had the plot figured out. I was so sure of myself and I couldn’t have been more wrong. The way this story unfolds is incredibly well done, with twists that feel earned rather than thrown in for shock value. Every time I thought I was a step ahead, the book proved me otherwise.
It’s dark, disturbing, and deeply unsettling in that slow, creeping way that keeps you constantly questioning what’s real and who you can trust. The tension never lets up, and the psychological aspects are handled with real skill it kept me hooked and guessing right until the end.
As with all of R.J. Powell’s work, check the trigger warnings and be mindful of your own limits. This one goes to some heavy places, and your mental health always comes first. But if you’re in the right headspace? It’s absolutely worth the read.
Madness in Tandem is another great splatterpunk horror novella from RJ Powell.
In MiT, we follow newlyweds Adam and Tilly who are on a week long vacation in a house on the lake. Tilly is an author who is taking the opportunity to work on her latest horror novel.
After receiving a pizza for dinner on the first night, Adam and Tilly start noticing weird things happening after a little sex in the hammock outside. Their pizza order was wrong. Tillys writing paper wasn't correct. The house lights were shut off. Phones didn't work. They decide to go to sleep thinking they're just exhausted from their travels.
When they awake the next morning, they notice things about each of them are different and things are getting surreal and weird. You definitely will NOT guess the ending.
While reading this, I felt like I was going mad with the characters.
As always, please read the trigger warnings as splatterpunk has very graphic themes and is not for everyone.
The streets were talking about Ryan J Powell’s “Madness in Tandem,” & they were all saying some wild stuff. So I knew I had to get on this madness and see if it was living up to the hype. Fast forward: it does & wtffffff. 😲
Quick synopsis: A young, recently married couple are enjoying their time away at a vacation home. Time to unwind, reconnect, and relive their honeymoon a few times. However, once they arrive, odd events start occurring that spiral fairly quickly out of control. What is happening to them? What are they becoming? And most importantly, who is perturbed when pepperoni gets accidentally put on their cheese pizza. They were trying to help you guys out here!
This book is about sex and insanity, insanity and sex. Interchangeably, completely opening the story with an “ooop 🫢 spicy” moment and ending with a “🫠W🫠T🫠F🫠” one. Powell really cranks up every scene with vivid detail that makes you feel every slice, smell ever…odor, and even taste every…bite that is taken. There are moments in the story that were so hallucinatory, I had to check my water *just* to be safe. This was a nasty little, perfectly-sized novella that tells a bloody, deranged story. I guarantee readers won’t see this ending coming, but you might want a cigarette after reading it regardless. Ryan is a new author to watch, her story was a breath of fresh air if you are looking to break your horror monotony! I’m looking forward to what she has coming next. 👀
So if I mention sex, some light bondage, pizza and a ginger bush, you would probably assume i’m describing my ideal evening…..and not the opening of a novella - but here we are.
Madness in Tandem opens with Adam and Tilly on the first day of their vacation. Passion and love are in high spirits, but things are swiftly going to take a turn. What follows is a surreal fever dream of initially confusing and tense moments that quickly move into the realm of unexplainable and insane.
This is a book full of filth and depravity and I was here for it. The surreal elements had an isolating feel to them that reminded me of books like ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ and the graphic aspects while intense, didn’t feel needless and put in for shock, they flowed well with the story. Powell is certainly one to watch and I will happily pick up their next release.
Madness in Tandem follows married couple, Adam and Tilly, on their vacation. What starts out as peaceful and relaxing, yet full of sex-crazed passion, quickly turns into hellish insanity. After eating pizza on their first night, they both wake up disoriented and fearful of what may have transpired during their long nap. Things seem to be missing with no explanation and creatures begin showing up unexpectedly and deceased. The couple's behavior turns erratic in nature and sends them on a sinister adventure with an incredible twist at the end.
This book was nicely paced and an easy, one-sit read at 96 pages. The events were all greatly detailed and the story was full of suspense. Ryan J Powell did a fantastic job writing this short story and I will be looking forward to what she comes up with next!
I received a copy of this book from the author, all views and opinions are my own. - I want to say as little about this little gem of an extreme horror novella as possible, wishing to not spoil the twisted magic of an R.J. Powell tale. Also, where's the fun in spoilers?
The story has a beginning that very quickly made me think about Rod Serling, and some of the darker Twilight Zone episodes. The Ending as well, evoked that kind of feeling, mixed with something almost reminiscent of an EC comics tale. The middle, dare I say the "Meat" of the novella is an assault with a meat tenderizing mallet. A Psychological pressure cooker, where a couple is to confront, dare I say *embody* the deepest, ugliest parts of their shadow selves. Ryan's stories are never something to pass up, but remember, this is an extreme horror novella, best buckle up!
Madness in Tandem is a romantically erotic trip into insanity and terror peppered with gore amidst Adam and Tilly’s honeymoon that left me excited yet horrified at the same time. Ryan J Powell pulls us into her story with the sense of romance and desires only to flip it on its head taking us down a darkly erotic path with a twist ending. My only negative about the story was it was just too short. That being said though, the ending suited the story. I’m excited to see what else this author comes up with in the future.
This is disgusting. Abhorrent. Repulsive. I wish it was longer, because I loved every page. Madness in Tandem is my first from RJ Powell. RJ is a sick freak, possibly needs a few years of therapy, and I think she’s an autobuy author now. After also talking to her a few times in the last few months, I’ve also realized she’s an amazing human and more than deserves the support of the splatterpunk community.
Don’t let this pretty cover fools you, this book is extreme!
I loved witnessing the decent into madness of our couple, and the things they had to do to survive, it was just horrible. The slow shift of emotions toward each other during all the things they’ve been through was really well done. From the spicy opening scene to the sinister ending this book didn’t let me catch a breath.
RJ Powell continues to be creative beyond belief. A couple goes out to a cabin and then they start to go mad. It’s like the Shining had a baby with the movie Together. The couple slowly starts to change: dominate hands shift, eye and hair colors change, they start self harming. It’s nutty, creative, and a page turner. Really enjoyed this one. I actually preferred this one and Eight Faces of Jane over Dollface.
Hmm. This was good to an extent. There were several glaring editing problems that I spent the majority of the story hoping was done on purpose but…nope. I do think it would be interesting to read the story from the pizza boys (and co.) perspective. Overall, a quick, fast paced, gross and horrifying story. 3.75
Full on splatterpunk, would not recommend unless you’re into that genre. This made me so nauseous but that ENDING though. That ending blew my mind. I had to sit here with my kindle in my hand and really think about what this author did to my brain processing that.
