The League of Kitchens Cookbook: Brilliant Tips, Secret Methods & Favorite Family Recipes from Around the World – Master Authentic Cooking and Cultural Traditions

Rate this book
The globally inspired, women-run, and home-based cooking school League of Kitchens shares recipes from and profiles of 14 women from across the world, gathered together into one visually stunning cookbook.

In 2014 Lisa Kyung Gross founded the League of Kitchens, an immigrant-led, home-based cooking school comprised of women from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. More than a dozen women—mostly grandmothers, with well-earned wisdom—come together to teach classes from their own homes, passing down their knowledge, skills, recipes, and most importantly, their secrets for how to cook with love. At its heart, the League of Kitchens is a celebration of the contributions of immigrants on our food and society, and, of course, delicious food.

Now, with The League of Kitchens Cookbook you can bring those classes into your home in a stunning cookbook like no other—one that delivers not only the soul-satisfying comfort of home-cooked meals but also imparts the intimate techniques and storytelling of fourteen different instructors, hailing from all over the world. The recipes are simple yet captivating, focusing on nutritious, affordable ingredients that resonate with seasonality and freshness, quintessential to every traditional kitchen across the globe.

Each recipe is a lesson, an opportunity to experience authentic traditions straight from the homes of those who curated them, accompanied by stunning photography capturing the essence of each dish. From Greek Roasted Chicken and Potatoes with Lemon and Oregano to Uzbek Mung Bean Soup with Rice, Fresh Herbs, and Dried Apricots; from Lebanese Salad with Pomegranate Molasses to Indonesian Corn Fritters with Shrimp, every page is a testament to the flavors and traditions that make each dish unique. The League of Kitchens Cookbook doesn't just show you how to cook—it shows you how to bring the world to your plate.

Loved that each section introduces you to the chef. The recipes look and sound delicious. I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes. Some of them sound a bit challenging, but worth the try. Great collection!

This cookbook is basically a cooking school for authentic cooking from Mexico, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ukraine, Greece, Afghanistan, India, Argentina, Japan, Uzbekistan, Lebanon, Iran, and Nepal. Women from these regions teach people how to cook classic dishes through the author’s school (in their own homes) and she has gathered their best recipes with extremely detailed instructions for each. There are many photos, though not for every recipe. There is no nutritional information. Many recipes are vegetarian and many are naturally gluten free, though many others will have to be adapted for those with different dietary needs. Most of the recipes require ingredients that may be trickier to source, but tips are given on how to find them and some ingredients can be omitted. A great resource to learn to cook truly traditional dishes.

I read a temporary digital loan of this book for review.

The League of Kitchens Cookbook focuses on creating recipes from around the world into your home. These recipes are from all over and some passed down from generations before.

The Sections are
The leagues of kitchens pantry
Chicken
beef
seafood
eggs
beans
Rice and other grains
Soups
Salads
vegetables
Sweets and drinks

Each recipe has servings, recipe blurb, ingredients, and directions and most recipes have a photo as well. In the blurb many recipes say what to serve with the dish which I enjoy.

I liked how the provided recipes for kitchen staples to have on hand. The directions are pretty lengthy, but clear in the ebook version.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a stunning and sentimental resource for cooking techniques and authentic recipes from Mexico, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ukraine, Greece, Afghanistan, India, Argentina, Japan, Uzbekistan, Lebanon, Iran, and Nepal. Women from these regions teach the reader how to cook classic dishes via the author's home-based cooking school with meticulously detailed instructions and beautiful photos (for most recipes). Several of the recipes are vegetarian, many are naturally gluten-free, and tips are provided for substitutions and sourcing ingredients. A lot of heart and heritage went into creating this delicious collection.

Thank you to HarperCollins for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I own this! So far I’ve made the khichari and the lubya. Long recipes that emphasize technique and selection of ingredients which is different and honestly kind of fun.
