About the author

Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age, a Dhaka-based English language national daily, is known for upright journalism and bold views on issues relating to democratic transformation of society and the state of Bangladesh and beyond. Born in Munshiganj in late 1960, Kabirreceived a Masters degree in English from the University of Dhaka in 1983. Earlier, he simultaneously studied English, Sociology, History and Law at the undergraduate level.

Before he took up the profession of journalism in late 1990, Kabir was a leftwing political activist and he played a significant role as a student leader in fighting against Bangladesh's martial-law regime in the 1980s.

Reputed as a public intellectual, Nurul Kabir's first book, titled Ganatantrik Mukti Andolan: Manusher Srijansheel Utthan Prasange, appeared in 1991.

Meanwhile, he has authoured Nairbachanik Swairatantra O Ganatantrer Sangram and The Red Moulana in 2012, Kathakata-a collection of interviews-in 2014 and Deposing of a Dictator: Revisiting a Magnificent Mass Uprising after 50 Years in 2020.

Besides, he has published a good number of researched essays on politics, history and journalism of Bangladesh.

Would hope for a big fat edition on Moulana Bhasani who from all accounts was an important and (to me, the most) interesting political figure for Bangladesh during its inception and early years. Alas, it's a very slim book and really just collects the stories cited in other publications. Even then, kudos for at least doing that in a book so anyone unaware of the man may know him and the other books which has accounts of him and those years of the history of Bangladesh.

বাংলার ইতিহাস আর মওলানা ভাসানী একসূত্রে গাঁথা। স্বাধীন বাংলা চাই এই কথাটি ভাসানী প্রথম বলেছিলো। ধর্মপ্রাণ এমন মানুষটি কখন মানুষ আর আল্লাহ ছাড়া কাউকে ভালবাসতেন না। তার কাছে মানুষের ভালোর জন্যই যেহেতু ধর্ম, সুতরাং মানুষের উপকার করাই প্রত্যেক মানুষের কর্তব্য । বাংলার রাজনীতিতে যা হয়, তা নতুন নয়, পুরোনো ঘটনার পুনরাবৃত্তি । যা ইতিহাস বলে তা নয়, অনেক সময় ইতিহাস মানুষকে গুম করে পেলে। অনেক গুলো প্রশ্নের উত্তর পেয়ে যাবেন বইটি পড়লে। বাংলাদেশের এখনকার অবস্থা আর তখনকার রাজনীতির একটা স্পষ্ট চিত্র চোখের সামনে ভেসে উঠবে, আর বুঝবেন এই মুহূর্তে লাল মওলানার মত জনগণের নেতা দরকার।

মাওলানা ভাসানীর পূর্ণাঙ্গ রাজনৈতিক জীবন সম্পর্কে ধারণা পাওয়া যাবে বইটিতে। ভাসানীর রাজনৈতিক বিচক্ষণতা ও দূরদর্শিতা এবং বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক বাস্তবতা সম্পর্কেও ধারণা পাওয়া যাবে। বইটি পড়ে মনে হল যে সাম্প্রতিক বাংলাদেশের যে রাজনৈতিক বাস্তবতা তা ভিন্ন কিছু নয় অতীতেরই অংশমাত্র। বঙ্গবন্ধুর মত রাজনৈতিক ব্যক্তিত্বও যে মাঝে মধ্যে অদূরদর্শী পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছেন তারও উদাহরণ আছে বইটিতে। আসলে মাওলানা ভাসানীর মত জনগণের জন্য রাজনীতি করা রাজনৈতিক ব্যক্তিত্ব বাংলাদেশে আর দৃশ্যমান হয়নি।
