I received this book from the author, his publisher (Inkubator Books), and Booksprout.co in return for an honest review. This was the first book that I had had the opportunity to read by this author (apparently, this is the second book in the Detective Marcy Kendrick series). I truly enjoyed this one! After reading the second effort in this series, I am interested in checking out the other offerings in this series.
LAPD Homicide Detective Marcy Kendrick is feeling the heat. Struggling to recover from the recent murder of her lover, she also has to deal with her ex-husband Jordan, who is now her boss and seems determined to make her life as difficult as possible.
A mom is killed, with only her fourteen-year-old twin sons as witnesses. But the boys, traumatized by what they have seen, seem to have developed a rare form of mutism.
Or perhaps there’s another reason they won’t speak? Because soon there is mounting evidence that the boys themselves may be the killers. Time is ticking as Marcy races to discover what happened.
This was a very good detective story with a pleasingly unusual plot, and interpersonal relationships similar in style to a Karin Slaughter novel. The two main characters, Marcy Kendrick and Angel Reyes, whose background stories were apparently developed in the first book of the series but were also brought up to date in this book, are faced with solving a possible murder/suicide with few clues on first reading. A woman has died and the only two witnesses to her death are her fourteen-year-old twin sons who have been rendered mute and are unable to be questioned until they can become capable of speech.
As with most murders, the chief suspect is usually the husband and this did not change in this novel. The estranged husband, a local psychologist of some renown, is a major suspect with a hidden background (rumoured to have been part of a CIA program of mind control akin to MK Ultra).
Baxter does a great job at developing his characters while keeping us entertained and moving the story along. I devoured this book in one sitting, and couldn’t stop turning the pages. There were twists and turns that I could have never guessed. The plot took an unexpected, but intriguing, turn. This was a great procedural thriller.
On a five-star rating, I would give this a solid four stars as this is a good detective thriller series and would be a definite favourite of fans of Michael Connelly and Karin Slaughter.
As with all my literary ramblings, these are just my five cents worth.
