Ugh. The premise of a killer that drinks his victim’s blood is stomach turning unpleasant. Zoe and Tatum are back in Chicago, still trying to track down Rod Glover. They arrive at a crime scene to determine if it was one of his, but it doesn’t appear to be. But they still get involved with the case. Zoe is an interesting character. I seem to spend a lot of time trying to figure her out. Is she somewhere on the asperger’s spectrum? She’s certainly tactless. And fixated to the point of wrecking her health. Tatum is much easier to suss out - he’s smart, good looking and social. And O’Donnell was a great addition to the cast of characters. But my favorite character of this series is Marvin, Tatum’s grandfather. Let’s face it, with this kind of storyline, you need a little comic relief thrown in. The story moves at a strong pace, keeping my interest throughout. The police investigations struck me as very realistic. The ending was great. I didn’t have a clue how it would play out and there were several twists I didn’t see coming. My thanks to netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of this book.
First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Mike Omer, and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
Returning for the third in the Zoe Bentley series, the reader is able to get a real grasp for how Mike Omer seeks to shape the book and his protagonist. While still in Chicago, FBI forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley and Special Agent Tatum Gray are hot on the heels of Rod Glover, a serial killer who has been terrorising people across America. When Bentley learns of the murder of a young woman, she noses her way into the crime scene, thinking that it might be Glover’s work. CPD officials are less than happy to have her poking around, but Bentley and Gray refuse to back down. It soon becomes apparent that the case is not Glover’s work, as there is an odd angle, where the killer appears to have a form of vampirism. The woman who was slain is the daughter of a pastor, giving Bentley and Gray a lead to follow. No one has seen or heard of Glover, but the loose description sounds a little like Daniel Moore, a congregant who has admitted to having issues in his past. While Bentley and Gray try to track down the killer, they begin to wonder if this is a partnered job, with Glover as the alpha male, but the unsub (unknown subject) as the one choosing the victims. While learning a little more about the Chicago vampire community, Bentley and Gray must also keep their eyes open for more crimes. Another woman is found dead, her body with telltale marks of a blood letting, which only increases the pressure. Working all the angles, Bentley and Gray must find the killer, as well as their specific prize in Rod Glover, before more women lose their lives. An interesting addition to the series, though Omer’s chill and sharpness seem to have been muted somewhat in this piece. Recommended to those who enjoy the series, as well as the reader who wants something a little unique in the killer on the loose.
If memory serves, I picked up the first book in this collection on the recommendation of a friend. I could not get enough and loved how the story moved well, showing the progress Zoe Bentley could make in her search for a killer. By this, the third book, I had high hopes for Omer to keep things moving, but they got a little clunky. More on that in a moment. Zoe Bentley remains the star of the book, though she is not as pristine and on point as I would have liked. She remains focussed on finding the man she once called her neighbour and friend as a child, knowing his days are numbered. While Rod Glover may have brain cancer, Zoe is sure not to let up on her hunt. That said, she seems to have a harder time using that psychology degree that got her the prime position in the FBI. Other characters help to advance the story well, but many did not shine as I would have liked. The story’s premise was strong and well worth my time, but I felt things either did not move with the rapidity that I would have expected, or the interactions were less sharp and spine-tingling, which is something that Omer has done so well in the past. The hunt for the killers was constant, but it appeared as though Bentley and Gray were spinning their wheels. Even the aspects with the killer in the narrative driver’s seat were sometimes lacking the flair they needed to push things forward. With Omer using the short chapter technique to keep the reader hooked, there were moments when the narrative and excitement dwindled, leaving the reader to continue in hopes of finding the spark. While I did not dislike the book, this was surely my least favourite of the collection to date.
Kudos, Mr. Omer, for more Zoe Bentley reading. I suppose this might have been an aberration in your usually stellar style, at least in my eyes.
Dr. Zoe Bentley and Agent Tatum from the FBI BAU (Behavior Assessment Unit) are back again. This time they are on the trail of a serial killer who had abducted Zoe and her sister several months previously. They hear there is a new case where a woman has been murdered with some similarities to their case so they need to investigate the crime with hope they can track their killer. Unfortunately when they arrive on the horrific scene they find some similar wound signs that they are looking for but there are also wounds that suggest this killer is draining the victim's blood. These wounds are completely unrelated to their killer but curiously there are also discrepancies that also point to their suspect. But, why would their suspect change his method of killing now? Could this be a different killer but also using a copycat technique intertwined with his own style of murdering female victims or is Zoe off her game with her profile and must start all over in developing a new profile for this murder and reevaluating their own case of the monster that Zoe has been tracking for years. The police department is not happy about the FBI Inserting themselves into their case right now, but before long they will welcome their help when another woman is abducted and they have no idea of who or what they are looking for and they only have small amount of time to find this woman or she may meet the same fate as the first victim.
I am a fan of Mike Omer and I really enjoyed this creepy, murder, thriller story. I think this author is a stellar storyteller with exceptional writing skills that leave me feeling excitement and tension while reading his books and looking forward to more of his wonderful novels. This was not a supernatural story yet, there were horror elements in this thriller that made it fun if readers enjoy very dark crime thrillers or just good old fashioned horror stories. This is truly a novel where nightmares are made and sometimes unfortunately can come true!
I want to thank the publisher "Thomas &Mercer" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this fantastic book and any thoughts and opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!
I have given this book a rating of 5 Nightmarish 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!

I struggle rating these books, because I have a couple of issues with them, but I also keep coming back!
Zoe Bentley and Tatum are back, investigating a murder that seems to connect to Rod Glover, Zoe's nemesis since book one. Only, there's some details that just don't seem to fit - including the fact that someone's been drinking blood.
As usual with this series there's good points and bad - the characters are very well drawn, they're all individuals with quirks that set them apart, but they still read as very real. The psychological aspects of the book are pinpoint accurate, and the operating methods of law enforcement similarly well-researched and portrayed. But the dialogue still clunks here and there, and the plot itself seemed off this time around; there's more plates spinning than usual, and here and there it seemed like they might just drop.
But despite my objections, here we are at book 3, and I'm still coming back to read the series. If you're looking for an entertaining read, with realistic and well thought out psychology and methods, you could do a lot worse.
Patiko man čia viskas: absoliučiai prie nieko prisikabint negalėjau.
This, the third Zoe Bentley mystery, is another excellent entry in the series. Zoe Bentley, forensic psychologist consulting with the FBI, and Tatum Gray, her FBI partner are in Chicago. They are on the trail of Rod Glover, a serial killer who featured in the previous book. He is still at large and they suspect he has come to Chicago. There has been a murder bearing most of the hallmarks of a Glover Killing with a few extra embellishments. It seems someone drank some of the victim’s blood (yuck) not a Glover trait. DNA analysis shows someone else was present. Does Glover have a partner?
After the murder of another young woman Zoe and Tatum decide to stay on in Chicago. Something very strange is going on. This second murder was different in many respects but still screams Glover. But there is someone else out there who seems with obsessed with blood. Zoe and Tatum are working closely with Chicago PD Detective O’Donnell. They are investigating links between the murders and a local church. Then another woman goes missing. The chase is on but time is running out for this third victim. With no body found the woman may still be alive - but for how much longer? As the net closes around the killers they make desperate moves and Zoe and Tatum must face danger head on to avoid more killings. This was a fast paced story that ticked all the boxes. It was enjoyable and entertaining. Thanks to Netgalley, Thomas & Mercer and Mike Omer for my review copy.
I actually hated parts of this book because Mike Omer made me care about people who were going to die. A skilled writer can make a character come alive in a few pages, and Omer did that over and over again.
I held it together until Rhea, but the chapters from her POV crushed me.
This final Zoe Bentley mystery is less about Zoe and more about the victims.
The overarching theme was resolved, but I could have read another book (or five) about Zoe and Tatum who were always just friends (no romance, which was so damn refreshing).
This series was brilliant, and I'm so sad it's over.
The third volume in the Zoe Bentley series finds Zoe and her partner, Tatum Gray, dealing with vampirism. In Chicago a pastor's daughter has been murdered. Zoe and Tatum are tipped off that there are similarities to Rod Glover's victims. Glover is a serial killer who has pursued Zoe since childhood. Zoe is now a forensic psychologist and she has been pursuing Glover since the first book, A Killer's Mind.
Detective Holly O’Donnell is in charge of the crime scene and she is less than thrilled to have the FBI poking into her homicide but agrees to let them check out the crime scene. She has heard about Zoe from the Strangling Undertaker case and is curious to see her in action. There are similarities between this crime scene and Glover's victims but there are differences. Like there were two different killers. There are ligature marks on the victim but there are wounds and indications that someone may have drained her blood. Could Glover have a partner?
Soon there is a second victim whose blood has also been drained and then another woman goes missing. Zoe, Tatum and O’Donnell develop a working relationship and respect. Zoe and Holly even seem to be on the verge of a friendship. The Zoe Bentley character is an interesting one and is hard to understand sometimes. I sometimes wonder whether she has Asperger’s Syndrome?
The book kept me engrossed and turning the pages to find out what happens next. In the previous book, In the Darkness, we learned that Glover had cancer and was dying. Is this the end? Will Zoe finally catch up with Glover? One character that I missed in this story who was featured in the first two books was Tatum's grandfather, Marvin. He added a bit of comic relief when dealing with a dark story but I still enjoyed this latest addition to the series and look forward to the next.
If you've read any of Mike Omer's previous books in the series, then you'll know that the killers in his books are absolutely depraved, devious individuals. But this one takes the cake! Thicker than Blood is an unsettling, dark and twisted read about a killer with a taste for blood! Unputdownable, this book may just leave you with a serious case of I-cant-sleep-without-the-lights-on.
When the body of the local Pastor's daughter is discovered, savagely murdered, the police are clueless about who the killer might be. Soon joining them on the scene are Zoe Bentley & her partner, Tatum. Arriving uninvited, the FBI agents are not made to feel welcome by Det. O'Donnell who is charged with leading the investigation. But Zoe has a lead & a possible suspect already in mind. The murderer’s MO is identical to that of Rod Glover—Zoe's nemesis & the serial killer who’s been pursuing Zoe since childhood. Forensics reveals the murder to be his work, but not his alone; desperate to fulfill his sick purpose, he has taken on an equally depraved partner. Zoe’s own frustration grows after another woman turns up dead and drained—and another goes missing. Time is running out: Zoe knows her own death will be the climax of Glover’s sinister play, which has been unfolding for twenty years. To stop Glover and his vile partner, she’ll need to plunge deep into their motives; but this means drawing ever closer to becoming another casualty of a dark, dark thirst.
Although difficult to love, I find myself drawn to Zoe. While I find her rough-at-the-edges personality a bit endearing I find it difficult to be convinced about her thought process & ultimately the guesses she makes to zero in on the killer. Zoe takes pride in her job as a forensic profiler and thinking like a killer part is very fascinating to me. I like it when so many possibilities are thrown at her and how she makes the educated (or lucky) guess of who the killer could be. I also liked this book because it finally brings her face-to-face with Glover. This book had many twists I never saw coming, yet I also had quite a few things figured out before they were verified in the book. I am not thoroughly convinced of Zoe's ability to profile yet, but in all, this was a very enjoyable read I recommend!! I look forward to reading the next in this exciting series which will undoubtedly be amazing!
Thank You, NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer & Mike Omer for an arc!
Just like the previous two books, Thicker Than Blood was a very good thriller. Mike Omer really did a great job with the pacing of the book, I just wanted to keep reading, I couldn't put this down, my heart was pounding so much and the suspense was soooo much.
The story was really intriguing and not like anything else I have ever read, I haven't read that many thrilles but I felt like the story was very original. And the subplots made the story even more interesting.
The plot was very good but what makes the book even better are the characters. Zoe has all my heart, I want to hug her so much (she is a Swiftie!! that makes me love her even more). I love Tatum. O'Donnell felt so real and relatable. And Marvin is simply amazing, he managed to make me laugh even while reading such a tense book.
Even though I have guessed one of the little twists (just a little one, I had no idea about the big twist), I am still going to rate this book higher (even if it's just 0.25 higher it still counts lol!!!) than the first two where I had absolutely no clue about anything. Maybe I got better at guessing idk🤔 Anyways I am rating this higher because of the characters, the development and the depiction of the characters was really good.
And well, just like the previous two, I enjoyed the writing style.
Wow this book gave me so much anxiety at some point but in the end I was screaming of happiness.
🎶 Staying Up by The Neighborhood is the song that makes me think about Zoe
This is the third book in the Zoe Bentley series. Zoe is a forensic psychologist and good at what she does, but somewhat lacking in people skills. Once again teamed up with FBI agent Tatum Gray, they are called in to investigate what appears to be a murder by someone who likes to drink blood. The book is quite gruesome yet compelling. As the investigation progresses it becomes apparent that they are dealing with a complex mystery and there is no easy solution. As Zoe starts to immerse herself in the mind of the killer it really impacts on her personally and her ability to see reason. Looking forward to book 4 in this great series.
Be to, net ir ši dalis paliko neatsakytų klausimų - knygoje vis sušmėžuodavo trečias labai paslaptingas veikėjas.
I really loved the first book in this series and felt connected to all of the characters. Unfortunately as time went on I felt disconnected and lost interest in the story but still wanted to finish off the trilogy. I enjoyed th audio narration of this one but at times it did seem like the book was longer than it needed to be.
Book 1 was my favorite out of the 3. The next two were okay reads - if you want to finish the entire trilogy then I recommend all 3 but the first one is what really had me engrossed.
The 3rd book in the Zoe Bentley series is as entertaining as the others. There were gruesome murders, yet it was a fun read. The detailed profiling was interesting, for once they got it right about the killer's profile in the first go. I could sympathize with Zoe whenever she tried to give a witty comeback and failed, then thinks back how she could have handled it better. She unwittingly becomes the detective O 'Donnell's agony aunt. The chemistry between Zoe and Tatum was like static electricity. Probably will have to see how their relationship shapes up in the next books.
I do love the writing style of Mike Omer but I couldn't finish the book. It takes on a vampirism twist which I am not a fan of, and when animals became involved in a negative way, even at the mere mention of any kind of abuse to an animal, I am out. This is one area that I cannot compromise on. It is because of the storyline that I gave it a 2 star otherwise I do think he is a wonderful writer. I wanted to know how it ended since this is the last book of this series and Zoe had been following a serial killer but I will have to use my own imagination.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Thomas & Mercer publishing .
Available to preorder for release on 23rd June.
This is the first book that I have read by this author. It is the third book in the 'Zoe Bentley Mystery' series . It mentions previous cases but gives any background needed to go with it. I will definitely be happy to read more of his books. This can be read as a standalone and reading it made me want to read the previous books in the series as well as more to come.
Written from the perspectives of several people including the FBI, detective, reporter, the victims and a killer.
Loved Tatum's personality , he made me laugh several times. I hope that he will be in the other books in this series as he has such a big personality. The rest of the characters were also very strong and realistic but it was definitely Tatum that stood out for me.
The storyline was unique and I don't think the blurb did it justice. It was a true page turner filled with mystery, lies, gore, crime, horror, suspense and some humour. An excellent psychological thriller.
I don't think that the cover gives the book much justice either and it probably wouldn't be something I would have picked up in the shop between that and the blurb.
THE writing was excellent throughout the book, along with the descriptions which dragged me straight into the plot.
I never did guess who the perp was which is a big bonus as there's nothing worse than guessing who did it within the first few pages. This book contains plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
I would highly recommend this book to fans of psychological thrillers, horror, suspense, young adults (13 plus), crime, mystery... I can go on so basically if your looking for a good book preorder this.
Rated 5/5 (I loved it ) on Goodreads and Amazon (UK and. Com) and over 30 Facebook pages
£3.98 to purchase on kindle. I think this is a very good price for this book.
“A twisted, perverse man in a perfect disguise of a nice, honest, chummy kind of guy. There’s no way to know what’s inside him. Not unless you’re us.”
Secrets were sticky. They could clog your tear ducts if you weren’t careful.
I've missed Zoe and Tatum so much! That's the downside of being up-to-date with series, you have to wait a whole year for the next book. This is the third one in the series and I have no idea if there's gonna be another one... I really hope so.
This book is about profiling, BAU (Behavioral Analysis Unit) and serial killers. Zoe Bentley is a FBI criminal profiler with great intuition but socially awkward. And then we have Tatum, her partner, who is a really nice guy, good as his job (FBI agent) and very protective. I have to mention also Marvin, Tatum's grandfather, who always makes me laugh.
Normally, when I read thrillers, I'm always impatient to see how they catch the bad guy. But with Mike Omer's novels, I take a step back and enjoy the backstory, the characters struggles, the unravel of the mystery.
