Homesteader Hearth Witch #3

Sourdough Troubles

Rate this book
A warlock with a sinister contract.
A spreading blight.
A forbidden shifter I can’t seem to stay away from.

All three ignite when the gypsy wagons of the Carnival Cauchemar roll into town. You’d think I’d be exempt from more hexes and hijinks, what with me hiding away and minding my own business on my cider farm, but apparently not.

When I anger the curse leeching off my family’s spell book, I’m forced to leave my refuge for countermeasures just in time to be sucked into an underground of shady deals, endangered friends, maybe one or two opportunities for stolen kisses with a certain lumbersnack shifter, and a creature most terrifying: a warlock.

It seems I’ve spirited a cursed spell book away to an even more cursed town, and if the stakes weren’t grave before, they certainly are now. Something’s affecting my magic, and if Sawyer, the Crafting Circle, and I don’t figure it out soon, I can say goodbye to lazy afternoon naps and Thursday night cocktails. Permanently.

The answers to all our questions—including the truth about the grimoire curse—lead us into the heart of an old forest, the one place Grandmother has always forbidden us to go.

Well, a witch has to break the rules sometime.

First things first and all that

Another exciting chapter in the Homesteader Hearth Witch saga, and this knocked it out of the ballpark. I have so many questions. I also want to smack miss thing upside the head and her lumbersnack too. I have to disrupt my plans and read the next one.

Cozy with a night circus!

💖 Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
📚 Genre: Paranormal cozy mystery

Features:
🍏 A night circus with a rodeo.

🍁 A mystery not based off of murder.

🍏 Found family and friends that save the day.

🍁 The main character actually showing her true strength.

🌟 Overall, I loved this book and binge read it rather quickly. The storyline was fast paced, the setting was still cozy and I really enjoyed the heartwarming moments.

Definitely will read book # 4 soon, but going to pause this series for a short bit to catch up on my Christmas tbr. 💖

Holy fucking hell this was intense. I absolutely LOVE these characters, the thickening and twisting plot, the relationships! OH MY it's perfect. The first half took me quite a long time because I am a mood reader and my life is in chaos right now but I devoured the second half. And the cliffhanger??? Criminal. I am so starting the next book asap.

Absolutely loved it!

I am loving this storyline so much! While it was short just like the first two, so many things are happening and the story is progressing very naturally, I’m really enjoying it. Misty thinks she has the answers in book 3, Sourdough Troubles, to finally figure out what has cursed who family’s grimoire… and WHO has cursed her family’s grimoire but, she seems to run into some trouble at every turn here.

While we are getting closer and getting some answers… she realizes that she doesn’t actually know about witches and their power like she thought she did and her education is lacking. She doesn’t know whether to blame her coven which is her family or the sheltered life she’s lived but, it’s making her take a hard look in the mirror. In her small dealings with other supernaturals in Redbud it’s become clear there are gaps in her knowledge and she’s not as prepared as she should be. While she doesn’t want to form attachments because she knows she can’t stay in hiding forever she quickly learns that she’s going to have to start relying on others if she wants help.

Again, there’s no spice but, we know the tension between her and Arthur is so there! I want to smack her upside the head so she gives in dang it lol! I hope we get more of them in the 4th book and Misty learns to open up more. This is such a good, continuous, cozy witchy, slow burn romance and I can’t wait for more! Happy reading all!

Not just sweet (OR sour) but also exciting!

Visualize me blushing as I admit that I had forgotten just how WELL Kat Healy writes suspense. Kat has a daft hand at painting emotional landscapes, creating an inescapable empathy between her characters and readers. As a result, within the span of less than half of the first book, I had become completely enamored by the SWEETNESS of this story.

But there IS a mystery, here, driving all of Misty’s actions, but between the Pixies and the Hobs, it just flew out of my mind. Had I tamed about the series I would have gone on about Healy’s writing style, or the authenticity of her characters who all cope with both positive and negative, and very apparent, personality traits. I would have talked about how lovable Misty is.

That’s all changed after this book. Because NOW it’s ALL about the mystery. We needed both of those first books to firmly root us in Misty’s world before Kat could take us down this path. So if you haven’t read the first two, do so now… you’re missing out.

Anyway, I cannot wait for the next book. As I said at the start of this review. Kat knows how to ramp up the tension and suspense in her stories, and while there is no cliffhanger (Thsnk GAWD, I dislike those), it nonetheless leaves one with an undeniable hunger to find out what happens next. Well done, my dear! Well done, indeed!

Continuation of cozy on a date at the night circus

As a continuation from the two previous books Misty attends a night circus or carnival with Arthur. She discovers the presence of a warlock and tracks him. She discovers another method of handling the family's grimoire in the warlocks wagon.
Misty also sees a debt being paid from a local rancher who's land is now affecting all of the land in town around it. Misty ends up getting stung and her core is affected and contaminated. With the help of her crafting circle she's able to get rid of the contamination from herself and the initial point of contamination.

This book in the series seemed a little bit less fluffy than the previous two books but still very cozy at the same time. You see a lot of growth for the main character Misty especially with her new not familiar, familiar Sawyer. I was getting real excited for the relationship butting between Misty and Arthur especially after she wrote out that text you knew that was going to end up getting sent to him. I was not pleased and how it ended but I knew it had to end on a cliffhanger and that seemed to make the most sense with their relationship. Also still don't know what kind of shifter he is yet.

Rather delightfully, I cannot figure out a simple genre to put this series in... "Cozy mystery"? Nah. "Urban fantasy"? Nothing urban about this. Not really a romance, although there certainly is an ongoing SLOW romance plot. I have not seen "rural fantasy" as a genre. Magic is not so omnipresent that I would call it an outright "fantasy", however.

These short books are NOT standalones. Start at the beginning.

This had much more of a developed set of threats than the earlier stories. Wow. The long-term story lines are developing. The secondary characters are definitely coming into their own. Much against her own desires, Misty's notion that she can keep her secrets to herself is disappearing rapidly.

The extent to which she put herself at huge risk by constraining her power was well illustrated, and, well, that kitten is going to have to decide whether to get serious and become a bonded familiar. And, of course, Misty has to decide to stay. (Which will be interesting since her family will want the grimoire back once she uncurses it). I look forward to the next books.

Whopping surprises galore in this installment of the homesteader heart witch book 3!
Arthur and Misty Fields (Meadow Hawthorne’s alias name) are two steps forward and three back, while she chases clues on how to break the family grimoire curse.

Disturbing incidents with unknown supernaturals occur, including darker fae…
the supernatural circus comes to town and while it sounds soooo fun, it isn’t. It’s more of a hellish circus with scary consequences. Misty is stung and becomes deathly ill, shocking for a green witch, and she has to be healed by friends who learn more about her.

Somehow this ragtag band of magical misfit friends survive the darkness attempting to consume their hometown, but they now must go to the only group member who has resources on the dark arts and it is indeed a shocking surprise.

An engrossing read, an entertaining series (what an amazing movie franchise this would be!) and an absolutely worthwhile read

Kat Healy has done it again, and I'm beginning to suspect Witchcraft. This series has taken me on a joyride. In book three, Sourdough Troubles, we continue on Misty's journey to solving the mystery of her family's grimoires curse. Her initial intention of leaving this town behind without attachments becomes a fantasy. She learns that it is ok to rely on her newfound friends.
This book series has been so cozy, but not at all boring. I love the way Healy expresses Misty's determination to protect her found family and her internal (and external) battle with denying herself love. In this book, we see Misty come to the realization that she doesn't have to go at this alone. Sometimes, we need a helping hand. I can't wait for book 4 to explore more of that juicy cliffhanger and to see where things go with that hunky lumbersnack! 😉

This entire series is beautifully written! Easy to visualize the characters and the scenery! I want the “I’m not a familiar” familiar cat! He is so adorable! There are shifters and Other magical beings that I love! I want a birdhouse now set up with cotton alls and fir for fairies to live in all year! I’ve named the little white spider in our kitchen Mrs. White because of the one in these books! Mine has all 8 of her legs though! The spells are really wonderful! I craved apple butter and cinnamon rolls while reading these books! Pages flew by and I thought about these people long after I put my device on its charger! I will read everything this author writes! 5 stars! Each book can be read as a stand alone but you’ll want more at The End!

Each Novella gets better and better

The plot thickens! Misty/Meadow is just starting to dive into her family’s curse/mystery but the road is not straight forward for her. Kat Healy continues to prove she has done her research regarding the subject matter as she tackles this great story. We get to learn a little bit more about the side characters as Misty deals with side effects from A magical deal gone bad. And the romantic tension continues between her and Arthur. Looking forward to the next story.

Each book of Healy's just keeps getting better and better. Misty has a place in my heart as well as other characters Kat has developed so completely. She spins a great story leaving a piece here and a piece there as the story moves forward. Misty wants to protect her family and solve the mystery/curse but has developed awesome relationships here also! You'll love this book. I certainly did.

Another great story that picks up where the previous book left off. We get to see more of Ame, Sawyer, Arthur and the crafting circle ladies. It's a bit more emotional than the previous books as Misty goes through some self reflection when she finds herself in trouble.

This series has been just a wonderful time for me. I have enjoyed each of them in their own way and this one was no different. I feel at home in this world, lord knows why, but I could put up with a lot for a certain lumbersnack too!! Kept me entertained throughout and I can't wait to see where the story goes next. Great book.

I love how Misty is growing in her relationships with friends and basically creating her own family. She does seem to find herself in dangerous situations and is learning how to reach out for help when needed. I think I would love living on an orchard and baking. I wouldn't mind a sweet lumberjack shifter either. This series has brightened up my reading so much!

Wow!

This third book, of a really wonderfully Cosy Series, entertained me, kept me enchanted with all of its Magic Lore, and thoroughly enlightened me, in how so much of it was to do with Nature's bounty, and of how it can help, or hinder us, when all modern means might not.

I'm SO Loving this series, and get totally wrapped up in Misty's story, especially when she's trying her best to be true to the purpose of her being in Redbud, in the first place.

Even as she wishes, so much, to let the self-inflicted chains fall away, that she willingly put onto herself.

That she has had to hold herself back from the small circle of people, in Redbud, that consider her as their friend, is rather heartbreaking.

Misty has spent her whole life separated from everyone, bar her immediate family, so having others willing to be friends, is a blessing, and a curse, to her.

Her friends, who couldn't be more unalike each other if they'd tried, all have that need for friendship in common, and I love that they all seem to have secrets of their own, and that their characters complement each other.

But they, too, all seem to be harbouring secrets and, in this part of Misty's story, some of them come to light.

But, my favourite parts of these tales come, when Misty's On-again/Off-again, relationship with Arthur, the quietly passionate Lumbersnack, rears up, as this becomes the focal point, really, of their continued story.

I have to confess, that I found myself shedding a few tears, when reading the text that Misty inadvertently sent to Arthur.

Their relationship embodies the way in which I consider a true romantic one should be. It's so sweetly funny, but sad, also, and I'm so hoping that things can improve, once they both become open with each other, about the secrets they are hiding from each other.

Of course, there's far, far, too much going on here, to tell it all, so buying this book, along with the previous two of the series, would be a decision well made, I believe!

There are actually two more books to the series, as of this point in time, and book four: 'A Grimoire Grump', is on pre-order, on Amazon, right now, to be released on 31st May, 2024, with book five: 'Muddled Magic', being released on 28th June, 2024!

In my.heart, I'm REALLY hoping for even more to come!

But, until the next book is released, I'll keep on reading all the books in my towering TBR pile, with the next book being a new Beaufont Series, by Sara Noffke, called; The First Beaufont, with Book One being: 'The Timeless Vigilante'.

It's got to being Silly O'Clock here, once again, so I'll get some sleep, before starting to read this new book but, once I have, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it!

* * * * * * * * * * * * *.* *

This second read was sooooo worth the re-read!

There were a few things I'd actually missed in my first read, that I was able to spot in this one, and it made a huge difference in my enjoyment of this particular book.

So, once again, I looked for different mentions of food and drink but, even though there was less than before, what WAS mentioned, had my mouth watering, & I'm definitely going to be making what I can of them.

This was a wonderfully entertaining read, with so many layers to the story, that it kept me rapt - & I'm totally in love with Ame and Sawyer!

Having just lost my own fur baby, it had me in tears at certain parts of the story, but that made it even more precious to me.

So, now that I've finished Book Three, it's now time to go straight on to Book Four: 'A Grimoire Grump', to see how Misty's friends can help her with her Grimoire problems!

Once I've finished, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know if there are any new mentions of food and drink!

By the time Kat's Cookbook DOES come out, I'm going to be desperate to cook all the things I'm reading about - & I'm particularly fond of Sourdough bread! Lol

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

It's now 3.40am, on Sunday, 20th April, 2025 - that's Easter Sunday, here in the UK.

This 3rd read of this wonderful series, was prompted by yet another of the books being published, which was Book 8: 'The Filigree Key', published on 28th March, 2025.

I was honoured to be allowed to check it over, before publication but, as usual, with my terrible memory, I remember very little of it, so I'm very much looking forward to reading it, as the penultimate book of the whole series.

Of course, I started reading the whole series again, just a few days ago, and will conclude with The Filigree Key, so that I can read it consecutively, on having the complete plotline in mind, as I read it properly for the first time.

The final book of the series, Book 9, 'Twisting Twilight', is slated to be published in December this year - but don't be surprised if it's published a lot sooner, hey? Lol

Anyhoo, I've finished 'Sourdough Troubles', once more, so am going on to read Book 4: 'A Grimoire Grump', again.

This is a pivotal book in the series, so I'm very much looking forward to reading it and, once I have, I'll add my thoughts to an already long-ish review! Lol

So, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know if I catch anything I missed in my previous 2 readings!

This is the third book in the series.
When you’re hiding from big bad enemies, and from your family, and from the carpenter/woodsman shifter who lives down the street, it gets lonely even if you’re surrounded by pixies and gnomes and have a not-yet-familiar cat.
Things are about to take a turn, the circus is in town and led by none other than a warlock who’s made a deal with a demon and part of the deal involves the town and its natural life.
Good story, nice twists. Enjoyable and bring on book 4!
