Alvar has been plagued by Dreamons since time immemorial. They stalk the night, in the mist between realms, to twist the dreams of mankind into nightmares and feast upon the primal emotions that dwell deep within. Thirty years ago, a desperate battle was fought and barely won, ushering in the first era of peace Alvar has ever known. The cost was high, but peace is worth any price…as long as it’s real.
In a cozy cottage deep in the forests of Delrythia, Callum prepares to leave for the university to study magic and join the Second Souls, men and women who risk their lives to touch the currents of magic. But when he overhears a stranger whisper orders to his parents with an offer of a silver knife, his world is turned upside down and he runs away from home, leaving everything behind.
A strange magic blossoms within him, one that ties him to a secret cult, to walking nightmares, and the Dreamon Realm itself. Callum must learn to trust again and find his own family while coming to terms with the power he wields.
Corwin was raised in foster care in rural Kentucky where he taught himself to read and write. He read just about any book he could get his hands on but found himself gravitating to fantasy books where orphans could wield magic and fly with dragons. Now he wants nothing more than to add his own stories to the world so another child somewhere will find an escape in a magical world.
YESSSS. ALL THE STARS! How? How is this a debut novel? This was insanely good. It is no small book either at over 400 pages, but believe me when I tell you, you will fly through this. But it deserves to be savoured and enjoyed. Books like this are why I read authors I've never read. Hidden gems like these should be celebrated. I cannot wait to read more from this author!
4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the world and the characters. I did an immersive read listening to the audiobook while reading a physical copy. This has the making of an amazing fantasy series. One small thing that kept me from 5 stars was at times it felt like info dumping. The author gave the background and history like I was sitting in a classroom listening to a lecture. I would like to have been shown more instead of told more if that makes sense, but it doesn’t take away the fact that this is a fantastic series and I am eagerly waiting for book 2.
Excuse me, debut novel?? This is seriously so underhyped and more people need to be reading it. I loved how different the story felt — it was fast-paced, and I flew through it.
The whole Dreamon concept was so cool and kept me hooked the entire time. And that ending?? I need book 2 like yesterday.
Was instantly pulled into Callum’s *dilemma*. Honestly reading this before bed took the Dreamon fears to a new level 😂
I liked the focus on character, especially in the last third of the book as so much came together. There was some long journeying, but through it I found myself enjoying learning more about Callum, Lydia, and the world lore. The magic and history of Alvar felt expansive, and I felt like I could trust whatever was working behind the scenes and just enjoy the story as it unfolded.
Sometimes mysterious creatures or plots never get answered in fantasy. Wasn’t the case here. I LOVED some of the creepy forces at play, and the fact that we actually got some epic learnings/reveals by the end. Very satisfying, while leaving room to discover more.
Honestly, I wish there was more Wren. Her POVs were awesome.
I’m excited to see how the adventure continues in the next instalment!
A very enjoyable debut fantasy! Massive world building, interesting plot, and really loveable characters. Obsessed with the found family, the systems of magic, and of course the corruption!! Can't wait to read the next one.
If I could go back in time, I would give this book to my younger self. It fits in with all my loves of fantasy reading, checking off a number of classic checkmarks for any fan of magic, mystery and coming of age in a world far different than our own. Michaels constructs a world -- fantastically detailed for his premiere novel -- that serves as an exodus from prologue to epilogue. Anyone who enjoys young adult fantasy, whether still a teen or aged with a family of grandkids, will find a home within this story and it's characters. As noted above, Michaels checked off all the necessary boxes quite neatly: the three main characters have varying enough backstories that none are repetitive (a downfall of many writers especially in YA fiction), their inciting actions and objectives align but are not so similar as to become stale and -- as we love to see - each discovers their own talents. Unlike lesser planned and ruminated stories, Michaels doesn't allow his teens to get too big for their breeches. He keeps them grounded, believable and relatable. In a lot of today's fiction, young adult and not, protagonists are too over powered. In a boring string of what rank as best sellers, readers are dulled again and again by over-powered protagonists who's only issues are controlling their unearned abilities -- most of the time bestowed by ancient prophecies. Callum loves learning, but he also respects and sees the need for it. It's a breath of fresh air to read the point of views of teens merely trying their best, pushing through what they need to know and doing it for the greater good, not a mere title or honor. Michaels' varies Callum, Wren and Lomen in their personal narratives and backgrounds so that there's a character to feel akin to regardless of our own lives. From different walks of lives and study, they complete in each other what they are lacking. The trio appreciate each other's abilities and inspire each other to excel; isn't that the true mark of a friend? Despite Wren having the least amount of chapters, she has enough backstory and information to stay relevant amongst the more developed boys. She isn't less important however -- they'd be lost without her city know-how and hard earned lessons. She's not the lynch pin only because they all are. They could not succeed without the other. It will be interesting to see in future novels what new characters interrupt this balance and offset their constructed. The only predictable moments can be caught by someone who reads enough fiction to latch onto tropes. Tropes can't be avoided, for readers or authors. However, I was surprised several times and even upon completing Second Souls twice through, I am still learning and correcting myself. The idea of penning such a blindsiding epilogue is not new, but utilized with finesse. As is such with there is foreshadowing and answers staring a reader right in the face, only for them to realize as the book unfolds. Michaels does not deliver these in a pretentious way. Callum, Wren and Lomen all must reach their own conclusions through their life experiences and emotions, the same as all of us. Naturally they wouldn't know every answer immediately. Hindsight is 20/20. Unfortunately, Michaels' hired editor let several past tense repetitions slide; to which Michael's cannot be entirely faulted for. It's the job of the author to create, write, and deliver. The editor catches grammatical errors and unnecessary repetition. Nothing is glaringly obvious except to those with an eye for commas and "had"s. These don't detract from the success of the story or inventiveness, only my nit picking. There are many unanswered questions throughout the book even when we reach it's end, enticing readers and myself for Book II. Authors can take however long they desire to write a story, but it's exciting to know Michaels plans on having it complete in the not too distant future. I'd be amiss not to note the cover as other's have: among the gilded and raised font on dust jackets today, a simply sealed hardcover is welcome. The monochrome stands out in it's simplicity. The minimalism reduces the brain's clutter, allowing for mental stimulation and inspiration. The true meaning of the cover in style and colors reveals itself smartly within the story. As wonderful as artists' commissions and representation have become to create character or story based covers full of detail, it's a breath of fresh air to see a simple silhouette, although everything within is far from simple. Pick it up for the holidays, pick it up for a weekend well spent, pick it up as a gift or just for some dry wit amusement and nostalgia. You'll be happy you did.
I want to start by saying that I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this book. I just knew that I loved this cover. I usually have a heard time with fantasy book. But this book is very different and had me wanting to turn the pages fast to learn and find out what happens next. Yes this book did take me a little longer to read. I just didn’t want to rush through this book. There are three different POV in this book. How the three are on different journeys to figure out what’s going on with the people and about the missing people. And who is killing. This is the first book that I read from this author. It wont be the last book. How the author created this world and the characters. This a spoiler but I really enjoy the friendship with Lomen and Callum. Even being different and how they are bought up hating or not understanding others to well. But Lomen really changed his thoughts when him Callum have traveled together and saved him. I did preorder my own ebook copy of this book. I definitely can’t wait for the next book.
About Book Callum is a young 16 year old who has been shielded all his life training to be a Second Soul. With books and training with his father. When Callum hears his parents and unknown man talking. He learns of something to which he decides to leave and find out answers of his own. Keeping secrets from his parents and his friend/trainer about having dreams. And things he is learning about himself since leaving. Lomen is a half Joruskan who doesn’t trust many people he is able to walk on the mainlan. When the Elders what answers they sent Lomen to get information. Wren who is has been hiding the night her parents have been murdered taking on a new identity to whom she is no longer. But when Wren has always questioned who would kill her parents. These three are finding out answers to what going on. I had so much reading this book. I do want to add that I enjoyed what I learned of Lydia how she helped Callum along their journey. I highly recommend this book. Thank you to the author and @lovebooktours for the opportunity to read such amazing book.

Ok, I was going to give this 4 stars with the sole critique of "I wish it'd been longer", but then I went to check how many pages it is (my ARC didn't have page numbers), and it's 420 pages - damn! It flew by so fast! I seriously loved this book. I first heard about it following the author on Tiktok, and signed up for the ARC expecting a quick, light, fluffy read. It was far more than I expected - the world the Michaels has built is so intricate, yet somehow realistic, that I had to remind myself it's an imaginary one and not a real place. The magic system is really cool, and I love that it's well-explained, but complex enough that there's still a lot to learn. My toxic trait is always trying to find "holes" in everything (like plots and magic systems), and I couldn't find any, it's so solid and well thought out. I'm not usually super into YA, but the teen characters are super endearing, but still human. I think I read a review somewhere that the friendships seemed rushed, but I disagree - these are teens going through something weird and huge and far bigger than they've ever imagined, yet they've also been abandoned/left to their own devices, so their immediate reliance on each other makes sense. All three characters are well-written - I can't wait to find out more about Lomen in particular, and how the hilo/mana and magic really relate to each other. The epilogue is pretty epic, too. The only thing I'm disappointed in is that I read this right before the release date, which means I'll now have to wait who knows how long for the next part! I'm legit excited for the next book in the series - I can see this easily being a long series with how much material there is to cover. There are so many aspects of the world, the magic, the characters, the races, etc. that I could see this being a pretty lengthy series without any of it getting boring or old. I guess in the meantime, I'll just have to re-read this to tide me over until book 2! Even though I got it as an ARC, I happily preordered a digital copy for my Kindle, and can't wait to buy the softcover edition when it comes out.
Alvar has been tormented by Dreamons who turn dreams into nightmares which allows them to feast on a person's emotions and usually ends in death. 30 years ago a group of Second Souls fought the Dreamon's and barely won, but did they?
In Delrythia, Callum is preparing to go university where he will learn magic, allowing him to join the Second Souls. To become a Second Soul this means you are able to touch the currents of magic, but it also means putting your life at risk . However, Callum's plans are halted when he witnesses a cloaked stranger orders his parents to kill him.
Suddenly, Callum is on the run and starts to realize that he has access to magic that ties him to the Dreamon Realm and a secret cult.
Second Soul is a wonderful fantasy book with easily accessible world building and loveable characters. I'm a sucker for found family and you will definitely find that here.
In the book, you not only get Callum's point of view but 2 other characters, as well. I enjoyed reading about each of their stories and seeing how they all tied in with the main storyline. Michaels creates extremely loveable characters that can't help but root for, while The Dreamons and cult are wonderfully creepy.
The only reason the book didn't get a full 5 stars was because there was a par of an integral scene that I felt was missing. We find out what happened in a later conversation and I really would have loved to see how the scene played out instead. Other than that, I found Second Soul to be extremely enjoyable. It pulled me in right from the start and kept me interested until the very end. I'm excited to see where the story goes and I can't wait for the next book in the series to be released!
My friend wrote this! :) Why did it take me until the actual line in the book to realize the "runaway, exile, orphan" tagline was about the three of them and not just the main character?? haha.
Overall an engaging adventure/fantasy story and a classic hero's journey.
My favorite part of the book was Wren's sections - partially because I felt like I got a fuller sense of the everyday world, whereas Callum was in the woods a lot. Would like to see even more of the everyday world and the people in it. Once all the characters came together, the friendship between them was a nice touch.
I don't read too many fantasy novels - or when I do, they tend to be "light fantasy" - so sometimes I forgot what was going on just because I forgot what the words meant. I need one of those little dictionary reference things they put in some novels!
Unclear to me: what was between Wren and Marissa? It seemed like they became incredibly close very fast and it seemed like maybe the book was implying... something between them, but I'm not sure what. Hidden parentage or ?? But maybe this is answered in the next novel
Overall, a very well-conceived fantasy world and an intriguing story!
Firstly I want to say that I can't believe this is actually a debut book, it was so unbelievably good. I was dragged into this book right from the very first sentence it hooked me and it didn't let me go from its Dreamon filled clutches until the very end.
The writing was so good and instantly drew me in and honestly I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day, the authors writing style is so engaging. The story line kept me completely captivated and I loved the Dreamon idea it was so interesting. By far for me though, the winner of this book is the character development. It is a very character driven book and honestly in my opinion they are always the best kind. The characters are lovable and I found myself getting instantly attached to some especially Alvar and Wren. I also liked the darker elements of this book, which I think were done really well.
I took my time to really appreciate this book and didn't want to rush, and I'm glad I did. There's a lot going on in this amazing world where magic is around and anything can happen, and it usually does.
This is his first novel, and he has done an amazing job in bringing it to life. You can feel the passion and dedication for the craft and love for the story come through his words on the page.
I fell in love with the story and the characters. You have three main characters and their point of view in the story. Who are they, and why are things happening.
He weaves you through each page so you understand. It's outstanding being in this world. His visuals just grab you and bang you are there.
I want the next book, though, to know what happens.
If you love fantasy and magic, you will love this book as much as me.
Thank you LBT for having me on this review tour and for my gifted copy of this epub.
This was a big ole book but it really didn’t feel like it was. I loved how actioned packed it was and I found I couldn’t put it down. I loved Callum, Loman and Wren although I think I really enjoyed Lomans backstory the most and learning so Much about his world and where he comes from. So so cool. Interesting and good. Like I think he needs his own book. That would be so good.
Everything about this book was so good. I really enjoyed Wren and how her relationship with the beggar queen was playing out. There is seriously so much going on it’s hard to not give something away.
I really need more cause I can’t get enough of these characters and I seriously need more of them asap. Please. Such a good book and I can’t stop thinking about it!!
I was chosen as an arc reader for this book and I must say what a wonderful honor! The story was magnificently written and full of magic. Some magic systems are hard to follow but not this one. This is a fresh and new story (or at least I haven’t seen anything similar to it) that will dig its claws into you. The author paints a picture with words for you beautifully. (I wish I could draw better so I could get some fan art up for this on a few powerful scenes). And I am screaming at the epilogue!!!!! I can not wait till more books come out to see how these characters grow throughout the series!!! The only thing that was kinda of a downer was it felt a little rushed in some areas but still a 5 star rating and already have a physical copy preordered!
I was an ARC reader for this book, but all opinions are my own. I'm sorry to say I DNFed this book after 140 pages. The story had not grabbed me by then, and I felt not connection to the main character or his quest. The idea of dream magic is definitely interesting, but the constant exposition dumps about that and the world didn't have any flavor to them. I also kept forgetting that the main character was 16 as his constant questions, lack of any real personality, and teacher's pet attitude made him come off as much younger. Even as far as I got in, it felt like the plot was waiting to get past the first step of the hero's journey. If you like books with deep lore to lay out, this might be for your, but I fear it will be too slow and lecturer-like for most.
A new world of classic fantasy. Second Soul introduces a lovable cast of characters with a unique magic system and intricate worldbuilding. There are mystery elements as well that start off the main character's story with an emotional arc that carries throughout. I really enjoyed the relationships the MC, Callum, has and develops with the other characters. The banter between him and his mentor was fantastic and truly made me laugh. I appreciated the amount of thought and planning that went into the worldbuilding. (The details of a currency system that denotes value by sides like dice was super clever.) I adored Lomen and his sweet personality. The bond that he and Callum formed was so sweet as they shared their knowledge of magic. The differences and similarities between their cultures being a bridge between them was a nice way to have the characters grow closer while making the world of Second Soul larger than the lands the two were traveling. The third main character, Wren, had a mysterious backstory of her own. I like her sharp personality and the way her story introduced us to another group and their system of ruling. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Deep Lore, High Stakes and Unbreakable Friendships
Second Soul transports you to a land with deep lore and a unique magic system. The main characters in the book are all carrying the heavy weight of responsibility and relentless determination that keeps you reading. While I liked the main character, I fell in love with Wren’s story and character. I found myself thrilled to discover her saga and cannot wait to read the next installment of this series. The author has rich world building and clearly put a ton of time into establishing the world that our heroes find themselves mixed up in. If you love deep lore, political intrigue, budding friendships, and adventure, this is a great book for you.
I don't normally read YA novels, but thought the Dreamons, monsters that devour one's soul in their sleep, were an interesting enough concept to pick up the book. Michaels drops just enough lore on these creatures to keep you interested without losing the mystery around them. The same can be said about Callum, the first main character we meet. He's on a hero's journey, and the mystery surrounding his circumstance isn't one easily solved. The narrative is spot on for the intended audience, and as a parent, I don't feel like there was anything I'd worry about my kiddos reading. And when you pair all that with the excellent performance of the narrator, I found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable read/listen!
I will be keeping my eyes out for more from this author, I have no doubt be will be a premier fantasy author.
This book is a wonderful epic adventure in a world the author has built with such detail and thought that you feel like you could jump right in and live there.
If I could add another half star, I totally would. The only reason it's not a five-star for me was that I felt it was a little wordy, and his writing style needs a little refining to read more smoothly.
Excellent work here, and I would absolutely recommend it to fantasy lovers and people just beginning their journey into fantasy.
Second Soul by Corwin Micheals is a phenomenal YA fantasy read and I was completely blown away with how much I enjoyed this book!
The world Micheals has created along with its characters is something really special and I was soon lost in learning about the lore behind the Dreamons and other creatures.
I really enjoyed getting to know the characters - Callum who is our young and incredibly intriguing main character and Lomen and Wren who he meets and befriends along his quest to find answers to the many questions that have been mounting up since he witnessed a strange and menacing being order his parents to do something very terrible.
I love how their friendship blossoms along the way and the brilliant banter shared between the three of them.
I’m so eager to find out what happens next as there’s so much that needs to be done after what Callum discovers. I really hope we are not left waiting too long!!
‘Second Soul’ is a great new YA Fantasy series. It’s action packed and certainly doesn’t feel like it’s 400+ pages long. I found it hard to put down. I really like the main characters of Callum, Lomen and Wren. I enjoyed Lomen’s backstory in particular and learning more about his world. Wren’s relationship with the Beggar Queen is really interesting as well but I wish we had seen more of the pits and what happened to Wren there.
This is a really entertaining world with lots of excitement and peril. I can’t wait to read what happens to these characters next.
I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.
Callum’s parents want him dead, so he flees only to find that he might have power beyond what normal Second Souls do. He’s young, and has spent his life secluded from the world.
He’s very childlike in many ways, but we see significant character growth and development as the story progresses.
The beginning chapters, probably the first 25% of the story was very information heavy. Blocks of information about the world and how it works given to us during Callum’s lessons. It was a bit to slog through, and I did find myself re-reading a few passages for clarity. However, around the 30% mark, the story picks up.
Wren has left high society after the sudden murder of her parents. She’s drawn the eye of the Beggar Queen. The lower class in the city are going missing without a trace.
Wren was by far my favorite character, I really looked forward to her chapters, but toward the end I thought she had a bit of regression and became more childlike while she interacted with Callum and Lomen. Overall, her story was my favorite, and I could have read a whole book just on Wren!
The world is on the brink of war. The power-hungry elite are keeping too many secrets to count… and there are still so many unanswered questions. Looks like I’ll have to tune in for book two to see how this all shakes out!
Very much enjoyed this book, I’m upset I’m so early and now I have to wait for the next books. The world building is good. I’ll be honest that I had a hard time taking the “Dreamons” seriously at first, the name tickled me, but halfway in I realized I was so into the storyline that I didn’t even notice it any more. I also love learning about the magic system and very much enjoyed the “currents” belief system. A solid YA novel, well balanced in both heart warming friendship and nail biting adventure.
Thank you for this beautiful story Corwin’hoa, I look forward to reading more of your world!
Wow!! Callum’s journey was so incredibly interesting & I cant wait to jump into the arc for book 2! When a land reaches a tentative peace after a long fought war against an unseeable foe with the help of those bonded to the magic of the land, all seems well for Callum, who is to leave for the magic university himself soon. But when he’s forced to run for his life on a whim, it’s not only his peace and safety that are at stake, but everyone in the lands. Fast paced, engaging, and leaves you page flipping for hours! Highly recommend! Right up my alley as a high fantasy lover this world building is great and the magic systems are so unique!
Absolutely phenomenal book. The main character is Callum has always wanted to go to the university and become a second soul. Second souls are the magic users of his world which is called Alvar. An unexpected discovery forces Callum to run away from home and abandon his aspirations. From there his journey begins. He suffers loss and makes some good friends along the way. I absolutely loved this book. It was beautifully written. It has a unique magic system and fantastic world building. It's YA fantasy but it's appropriate for any reader. Very fast paced. I really enjoyed it.
Absolutely loved this book made us feel nostalgic, like when we read fantasy books when we were younger again. Keywords we use to describe this book: Adventurous, found family, lone wolf, secret cult, and government conspiracy. Corwin has created a truly unique world with a completely different magic system like no other. The friendship that builds between Callum, Lomen, and Wren is so endearing to read. Second soul is a magnificent story it has been a joy to read. We can't wait to see where the rest of the story goes.
Second Soul is a great debut novel for Corwin Michaels and a really fun start to a series. The main characters all feel very different and have their own goals they are working towards. Callum, while a little naïve and young seeming at first, really grows into someone who is LIKEABLE...which is a hard ask for me with main characters (I still like Lomen more though, what can I say!?). I'm very much looking forward to what comes next in this series but also what Corwin comes out with in the future.
Corwin Michaels has crafted a beautiful story centred around devastating secrets, heartbreaking loss and finding a true family. He has moulded a perfect mix of incredible world building, interesting character development, and wonderful story telling.
This book is a great first book in a series. It poses questions that need answers and sets up for the next instalment.
The cover of the book is why initially drew me in, I like the simplicity of the block black and white colour but the coloured flairs really finish it.
This book was a brilliant read set in an epic world beautifully created by the author. It’s so intricate and detailed that it was hard to believe it wasn’t a real place. Add the very real characters with their struggles, dealing with unusual situations, magic and building friendships, and you get an entertaining read. I really couldn’t put it down! The story has three main characters who each all the story from their POV’s. The story is expertly written with a solid, well-planned plot. I really hope the wait won’t be too long for the next one.
