Lightning, but not from the sky. From the trees, from maybe even your friend. Magic is woven into everything in this reality; from the birds (they don't like you calling them that) in the sky, to the rocks deep in the earth.
Aultemus, Syora, Railo, and Feuson have to set out in this reality, but this is their reality, and they're quite fond of it. They have their own struggles clawing at their minds but that's why they're together.
There's someone who plans to get rid of magic in their world, the magic that makes it special, turning a blind eye to the sacrafices they must make to reach their goal. The adventuerers want to stop him but is that why they're really doing it? Is it the right thing to do to stop someone doing evil things, or are we all in it because of the sunk-cost? Can we even overcome our true nature with all the magic in the universe?
This is a fantasy adventure in the style of Avatar, Dragonlance, and the Last Airbender that reads like a graphic novel.
The character that the book is titled after, Aultemus, is thrown from his realm by his father while they’re at war and lands in the realm where Syora, Railo, and Feuson live. He needs to find his brother, Nadaan, and has no information about why this realm or what he might be here for. All of the characters have affinities for different types of magic, and some have use of multiple types. The group travel together develop strong bonds as they battle enemies, and revelations are peppered in like Railo having past history with a notorious bad guy and that one of the characters is a whole lot more than they seem. A villain Astromancer is collecting people and the group ‘s quest leads them to visits with Valkyrie royalty, humans, orcs, and other mythical creatures. They not only collaborate with people they never thought they would, but are introduced to progenitor technology as they learn about time and space and planets and realms in the broader universe!
The world building in this book is a lot of telling and not showing. It occurred to me that this is a story that is made to be a manga type graphic novel, which helped me with some of the clunky pacing and fully explained visuals. One instance was a character with earth-magic grounding themselves in vines to use their power to charge up another character’s sword, for instance. I’ve seen this watching my husband play video games.
Fans of anime, dungeons and dragons, science fiction, gaming, and high fantasy would enjoy this book. Found family, hidden abilities, and the heroes journey are tropes you’ll find in this story. Love, friendship, emotional angst, backstory, and overcoming against all odds. There’s something for everyone!
