"In the beginning, there was nothing but Chaos.Until he split himself in two, creating his equal, the Mother of All Life, Creator of the Titans, Gods, and Stars. The two lovers bore the Primordial Space, Time, Light, Dark, Love, and Hate, to see the infinite possibilities of what may... be.
They fell in love with their creation, and watched life slowly evolve. Together.
And there was peace.
The Titans, Gods, and demigods that now populate the Earth, thousands of years after the extinction of humans, are unburdened by the urgency of time.
The mortals had become so riddled with Darkness that balance was demanded, until Light hung like a veil of hope over the utopian land. Now, even the gloomy winter mornings smell like potential. Life is simply... s'wonderful."
Darkness seems to stalk her, Light so absent that she doesn't even have the shadows for company. Until someone equally as stubborn, powerful, and cursed by the Dark quite literally fell from the sky.
And maybe she could love him, could find her way to the Light and live in peace. "The Color of Stars" marks an impressive debut for Emma Hesse, offering a blend of fantasy and relatable real-life references that brings a relatability aspect to the story. One of the true gems of this book lies in the incorporation of interactive elements such as a vision board, a pronunciation key, and a flower key with hidden messages. It adds a layer of depth and engagement to the reading experience. It's evident that Hesse poured a tremendous amount of care and attention into crafting these details! Major points for the relationship, romance, and friendship aspects as well. I was completely captivated and thought about this book for weeks after reading it!
While "The Color of Stars" excels in many aspects, there are areas where further development could enhance the overall impact of the story, i.e. more context into the world-building history aspect. Additionally, moments of plot twists occasionally felt abrupt, leaving me momentarily disconnected from the story. A bit more buildup and explanation could have heightened the impact of these key moments.
Despite these minor considerations, "The Color of Stars" remains a super cute and relatable fantasy novel that showcases Hesse's talent and creativity as a writer. I cannot wait for book #2!!
