These Vengeful Wishes

Rate this book
A teen girl moves to a small town and discovers a mysterious wishing well possessed by La Cegua, a vengeful female spirit with the face of a horse skull, in Vanessa Montalban’s new YA fantasy standalone.

When her stepfather is arrested, aspiring artist Ceci moves back to her mother’s hometown of Santa Aguas, an eccentric small town steeped in the legend of La Cegua, the specter of a wronged witch who appears on lonely roads at night, luring untrustworthy men to their deaths.

Ceci and her mother take up residence in the abandoned manor of the Sevilla family, rumored to have been cursed by La Cegua, where she begins to uncover a past that seems to be connected to her mother. The more she learns of the Sevillas, the more Ceci finds herself forming a strange affinity with the feared Cegua, who she suspects is the one inspiring her paintings of a mysterious door in the forest.

When the very door Ceci has been painting appears in the woods, she decides to venture through it with her new friend, Jamie. Together, they discover a well, guarded by the statue of a veiled woman. A well for granting wishes. The well of La Cegua.

What starts off as harmless fun quickly escalates into something sinister when Ceci realizes that the wishes are putting the people she loves in danger and testing her own penchant for vengeance. After learning others are also searching for the well, Ceci must confront the truth of her mother’s past and prevent La Cegua’s wishes from being used for the wrong reasons. Ceci knows too well how much people will sacrifice for power. Every wish has its price, and La Cegua never forgets the ones who have wronged her.

"Her head lifts in my direction. I watch slowly as she lifts her mantilla and shows me her true face . And in it, I see horror, I see beauty, but most of all, I see truth."

☠️ La Cegua is an old Nicaraguan folktale about a beautiful woman who lures men into the woods. She petrified them by showing her true face - which some claim is a horse skeleton. A vengeful spirit in the woods. La Cegua is a creature born of tragedy and abuse, fueled by revenge.

Some weird town superstition? myth? Rumours?

We follow MC Cici who describes herself as an out-of-town weirdo who moved to a haunted mansion in the middle of the forest. She finds herself having vivid dreams or nightmares about La Cegua and ultimately discovers the painful truth about her family.
Despite it not being scary at all imo, it is still well-written and doesn't read like typical YA. It is more of a cosy mystery/suspense/thriller for me with just a few horror elements sprinkled and with gothic atmosphere. The characters especially the MC is so relatable. Ma pa Sana all Ka na Lang dayon na tani may Ara kaman Jamie irl.
Generational curses and ghosts, vengeful spirit, magical realism, complex mother-daugher relationship and more. 🖤✨

One of the best YA fantasy thrillers I have read in quite a while. A few things I loved: suspenseful and impossible to put down, diverse characters who are developed believably, interesting setting, and beautiful imagery--yet the diction never turns purple. I hope classroom teachers find this novel as it would provide wonderful discussion topics for advanced high school readers. Themes center around faith and superstition, friendship and love, history and rumor/gossip, and family dynamics. Readers of all ages will enjoy this one, so yes, I certainly recommend it for adults too.

I enjoyed this so much! Full of heart, with a bit of mystery/suspense, found family, secrets, healing, and a beautiful love story as well (Jamie is such a great character!). Ceci grows so much throughout the story, I loved seeing her develop as she uncovers the truth and her ties to La Cegua.

I liked how it all came together in the end, how the pieces fit into place. I found it to be all wrapped up nicely with a hopeful and satisfying ending. Can’t wait to shove this one into people’s hands.

This was SO. GOOD. Like read it all one day good.

I loved the characters, the south Florida gothic Mansion, the mystery, the horror elements, a vengeful spirit that punishes bad men 🎉.

The story moves along at such a nice pace, we have a lil teenage romance, lots of tension, I personally could not read this at night when home alone 😂.

Overall, so good, I enjoyed this so much. You can read it anytime, but this would be a perfect September/October book.

Thank you @netgalley and @zandoprojects for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

When her stepdad is arrested for embezzlement, Ceci moves back to her mother‘s hometown, where a local legend is said to lure men into the nearby woods, where they are never seen again. Or if they are, they are completely traumatized. And, it just so happens, that Ceci and her mother are moving into the home of a family particularly targeted by “La Cegua.” Ceci immediately feels a pull toward the woods behind the home, and while her mother claims the legend is nonsense, she forbids Ceci from going near the forest for any reason. Can Ceci figure out the mystery behind the spirit before it’s too late?

First, I am officially old: the “high school days” of the parents in the book are the same as mine. Thank you for that, lol. But I’ll forgive the author because she mention Jarrito’s in the book, and I love those, so all is forgiven.

Anyway, I absolutely loved this book, it had everything for a perfect escapist thriller: a unique location, a historical mystery, a creepy house, a ghostly presence, and family secrets! What more could you want?! And the author weaves all of it together seamlessly in a way that is easy to follow and creepy in an insidious and entertaining manner. I was hooked from the very beginning, eager to see how the story was going to unfold.

And I was not disappointed. The ghosts are creepy, the backstory is fabulous and the characters in the present are not only likable, but Ceci is pulled headfirst into the mystery and brings the readers along for the ride (I really don’t want to say too much - it’s better if you discover everything right along with her!)

All I can say is that you need to pick this book up! It’s a great mystery/thriller, with plenty of twists and turns that will make you want more, I know I’ll be watching for more from this author!

Though a bit predictable, this was a good read.

I loved the focus on Nicaraguan culture and legend – the book definitely sent me to the web to find out more.

Our main character is likeable. While there’s a touch too much angst for me, she definitely read as a real (angst-filled) teen. I also found her relationship with her mother realistic and emotional!

The story is nicely creepy and it kept me reading.

I’d definitely read the author again and would love more stories about Nicaraguan culture/legend!

Readers who are looking for an atmospheric YA mystery with an emphasis on romance would be the best audience for this book. It’s classified as a horror/fantasy, and I don’t think that’s accurate at all. Readers who want to be spooked should pass on this one, as the scary scenes are few.

These Vengeful Wishes had both positive and negative aspects to the writing and storytelling choices. Vanessa Montalban’s forte is definitely atmosphere, and this ability really shines through during moments where la Cegua enters the plot. (Unfortunately, there weren’t nearly enough of those moments.) Another strength in her writing is the romance, which felt very meaningful and developed. I loved Jamie! By the time Montalban showed Jamie’s rapport with the elderly people at the care facility he works at, I was 100 percent sold on him as a character.

Downsides to the writing include odd pacing in some sections, as well as occasional ways of phrasing things or word choices that didn’t quite stick the landing. I also felt that there was a lack of compelling reasons driving main character Ceci’s actions. We never get very far beyond Ceci stating “I need answers.” Why? Is she curious as a character? What will happen if she doesn’t find out the answers? It feels like a lack of stakes within the plot. And by the time we reach the ending, I felt like the story got too jumbled up and complicated for its own good.

With all of those factors, it was only a 3 star read for me. But I would definitely be down to try another book by this author. With her ability to write great atmosphere and relationships, I think it’s super likely that she’ll write one in the future that I’ll love!

This is the second book I have gotten to read by Vanessa. I got to read, A Tall Dark Trouble, which is good read as well. So when I saw that she wrote a horror book. I was like, let’s go! 👻
These Vengeful Wishes is so much fun. It is brimming with dark atmospheric, mystery/apprehension, found family, elements of horror, a vindictive apparition, and a dash of romance. I love the characters because they are really relatable. This is young adult horror at its best. I absolutely LOVED this book! This book enter-twins folklore with life that leads for a horrific fast paced novel.

I want to thank NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

These Vengeful Wishes by Vanessa Montalban is a YA horror novel with elements drawn from Nicaraguan folklore.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t particularly engaged with this story.
The plot didn’t capture my attention, even though La Cegua’s story was pretty intriguing.
I also struggled to connect with the characters and I would’ve appreciated a deeper exploration of the relationship between Ceci and her mother.

This book is a brilliant testament to why I adore young adult fantasy and horror! From the moment I cracked open the pages, I was swept away by the rich, complex characters and their intriguing, multi-layered personalities. And let’s not forget the book boyfriend—an absolute charmer who deserves a top spot on all future "book boyfriend" lists.

While I did manage to predict a few plot twists before they unfolded, the story's rapid pace and relentless thrills kept me glued to the pages. The atmosphere is nothing short of spectacular, drenched in eerie, spine-tingling vibes that made every chapter an exhilarating ride. If you're a fan of YA fantasy and horror, this book is a must-read. It’s a delightful blend of excitement and suspense that reminded me exactly why I love this genre so much.

This was a good YA read! Wouldn't have picked it up/noticed it without a bookclub on Fable picking it since it's not a title I've seen talked about yet, but it definitely deserves some hype. There's a solid mystery-with-paranormal-happenings vibe and I'm always a sucker for stories with curses and vengeful women. There was some great imagery and dream/vision sequences, and the teens felt like normal teens (some angst, but nothing overblown). The main story thread I really appreciated was the relationship between Ceci and her mom-- their relationship is strained and fractured from the start but they try to find healing despite the generational trauma. There's a bit of romance that's really sweet as well. The only real "detractors" for me were the slight predictability of the plot and not feeling as connected to the characters as I'd like for a full 5* read. Definitely recommend if you enjoy paranormal mystery-thrillers with some magic and self-discovery.

This book was everything. So atmospheric. The setting was amazing. The horror elements were so well done. The take on magic felt new and fresh, and I love it.
I love how the Nicaraguan folklore was entwined with the main plot.
I love Ceci and how fiercely protective of the people she loves.
I love Jamie. He was *puts in pocket* my baby.
I really liked how family trauma was dealt here, and that ending brought me to tears.
Overall, this is a new favorite book, and I can't wait to read more of this author.

The most intriguing thing of the book is the folktale mystery about a creature described as having a horse skeleton for a face that lures men into the woods.

It's pretty creepy, I would say.

Unfortunately, that’s the only element I genuinely enjoyed. The pacing feels off in several parts making it hard for me to connect with the characters. Aside from the gloomy and creepy vibe, the suspense is lacking so I'm also a bit bored.

Thank you, Netgalley & Zando Young Readers for access to the arc. All opinions are my own!

A little late with the review but I come with a lot of love for this book.

The cover was the thing that drew me into requesting 'These Vengeful Wishes' but right from the start, this book captured readers with an atmosphere of melancholy, longing, and anxiety.

Following Ceci as she returns to the town from her mother's childhood and to a manor haunted by a curse.
A mysterious curse surrounds the original families' deaths, and on the way to discovering the truth, she'll find out the cost of wishing.

I will say that this was very fast paced and while I could see more information or setup adding to the book, it still really hooked me, so my comment is only for what i think some might say.

Thank you to Hear Our Voices for the e-arc. Truly honored to be particapting in Montalban's release tour!

This was a hit Latinx YA Horror book!

This book revolves around The Nicaraguan Leyenda of La Cegua. La Cegua is a folktale about a woman wronged who appears in the night and lures away untrustworthy men to their death.

This book not only features the tale but this version is written with complexity and real characters. La Cegua isn't only a tale of a woman seeking revenge but it's a tale of a women who has been wronged by men with themes of the importance of family.

I love how complex all the characters are in this book, no one is completely innocent and this is truly rare to see in YA horror. Ceci is a unique character, her perspective is one worth reading about despite it's bias. You get to see her mature and grow throughout the book, understanding that her purpose in life is bigger than what she believes.

Ceci and Jamie are a great duo, they compliment each other in a loving way. Jamie is the softness in Ceci and Ceci is the protective shell of Jamie. Their romance was truly sweet to read about alongside the

One of the things that I truly enjoyed about this book is that it touched upon serious subjects that are occuring in our world today. Such as the effects of Gentrification within Latinx cultures, alongside Generational trauma within Latinx households.

The pacing of the book is fitting to the novel, and it's ending is satisfying for the characters. I truly had such a great time reading this. I'm excited for everyone else to tune in on release day!

Netgalley ARC provided in exchange for an honest review!

These Vengeful Wishes was an easy, casual read with an intriguing mystery and steady pace. Montalban's prose is easy to read. Ceci and La Cegua's story offered a tragic narrative arc and I found it a compelling mystery. Unlike most people in the reviews, I couldn't have predicted the way the story unfolded and Montalban did an excellent job of building steady tension and mystery. I also have to give at least one whole star to Jamie, I adored the banter between Ceci and him. Honestly, they were easily one of the most fun couple's to root for that I have in a while.

All in all, These Vengeful Wishes was a delightful read, although I did find the beginning a little bit slow. This is exacerbated by the later pace of the book. Despite this, I still had a blast. Easily a 4/5 star read! Best of luck to Montalban on release day!

Thank you to NetGalley and Zando Young Readers for the eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

These Vengeful Wishes delivers an engaging story, though I found much of it to be predictable. The mother-daughter dynamics felt a bit overdone and cheesy, like something you'd expect in a Lifetime movie. On the other hand, the romance subplot was a pleasant surprise and ended up being one of my favorite parts of the book!

The writing itself was a bit of a mixed bag—there were moments when I really enjoyed the atmosphere and direction of the story, but at other times, I was pulled out of the narrative by cliché or cringey depictions of teenage characters. Despite these issues, the overall vibe of the book was enjoyable, especially for the spooky season. It's not the kind of book that will linger with me long after finishing, but I would still recommend it to those looking for something spooky without ever crossing into truly scary territory.

I had so much hope for this one but i was disappinted. Tho plot was kinda obvious and i couldnt really connect with the protagonist or any of the other characters. It did not gave me this creepy vibe i was hoping for. The ending did not really make sense for me. I still think people could read it if they are looking for some unsettling vibe and a kinda creepy atmosphere.

"Abuse isn't always loud or physical. Sometimes it's a bard-wired whisper."

These Vengeful Wishes by Vanessa Montalban is the kind of book that pulls you in with its creepy atmosphere, complex characters, and a plot that just keeps getting more twisty the deeper you get. If you’re into YA fantasy with a dash of mystery and a whole lot of supernatural intrigue, this book is definitely worth checking out!

Ceci, the main character, is relatable and down-to-earth, pooling with the angst we all felt as teenagers, but her life has taken a major turn after her stepfather’s arrest. Going from living rich in a huge house in Miami, she's forced to move to the rundown hometown of her mom-the quirky town of Santa Aguas, where everyone seems to know the legends surrounding La Cegua, a powerful spirit with a horse skull for a face. As Ceci settles into her new life in the abandoned Sevilla family manor, she starts to uncover connections between her mom and the mysterious curse that haunts the town & the family that used to live in her home. And then, she finds a wishing well—of course, this well is no ordinary one. It’s connected to La Cegua herself, and things get seriously dark when Ceci starts making wishes with some deadly consequences.

What I really loved about this book was how the folklore and the magic felt so real. The way Montalban weaves in the myth of La Cegua with Ceci’s own family history creates a sense of tension and urgency that keeps you hooked. The more Ceci learns, the more she questions who she’s becoming and what she’s willing to do for the people she loves. The whole theme of be careful what you wish for is explored in such a nuanced way, and watching Ceci wrestle with the consequences of her actions made for some really compelling reading. I loved the person Ceci became in the end.

The setting is another big win for this book. Santa Aguas is steaming with intrigue. It’s a small, strange town full of secrets, and you can almost feel the weight of its eerie, magical past. Montalban has a way of describing everything that makes the place feel alive with mystery. The interactions between Ceci and the townspeople, especially her bond with her friend Jamie, give the story a great emotional core that contrasts with the darker, more dangerous elements.

Overall, These Vengeful Wishes is a fast-paced, atmospheric YA novel that combines elements of horror, magic, and coming-of-age themes into one very enjoyable read. If you’re into stories where the supernatural has real-world consequences, where characters have to face their darkest desires, and where every wish comes at a price—this one’s for you! Definitely recommend if you want to dive into a world where folklore is alive and kicking.

Special thanks to Edelweiss+ and the publisher, Zando Young Readers, for sharing this eARC with me in exchange for my honest opinion. This review is based off an uncorrected proof which did not sway my opinion either way. Be sure to get your hands on this book for its release date of February 4th! These Vengeful Wishes by Vanessa Montalban is a folklore retelling based off La Cegua with a blend of ya horror and contemporary fantasy. It follows Ceci, an aspiring artist, who has to suddenly move back to her mother's hometown and into an abandoned manor full of secrets. The entire town seems to think they are haunted by a vengeful spirit. Then she finds a mysterious yet familiar door in the woods that leads to a wishing well.

I am utterly obsessed with this story! It was written so well and kept me engaged! The themes of a new creepy town with a ghost story, curses, abandoned manor, and the feel of everyone knowing something you don't all blended so great. The gothic-like atmosphere was perfect.

Loved the characters. They all added something to the story. Ceci speaks to my soul, and I love her dearly even with all of her flaws. I have two other characters that just stole my heart, but I won't spoil it! Love the progression of the romance. My girl definitely gives black cat energy!

I enjoyed all the twists and the suspense surrounding them. This was my first La Cegua retelling, and after reading her history, I truly understood her. I need more! Feminine rage? Yes, please! I highly recommend this book

Let me summarize this book by quoting a line from pg 184: "The author had a propensity for circling the damn point."

This feels like a massive Freudian-slip b/c this whole book dragged, layering in scene after scene of nothingness.

So, what was the point?

Cecilia Navarrete (or Ceci) and her mom, Marina, move back to Marina's hometown after a bunch of stuff happens with her now (or soon to be, I am unsure if they actually divorced yet??) ex-husband, who is like in jail for white collar crimes. This info isn't that important, it's just a catalyst to get them to the town and to frame her mom as always chasing rich dudes.

Ceci meets Jamie, a cute, wholesome boy who of course falls hard for her, but she can't handle a relationship cuz her mom won't stop marrying sugar daddy's, divorcing, and then uprooting them over and over.

The hometown has a myth about La Cegua that's taken somewhat seriously by the locals. A spirit of a woman with a horse head who abducts men into the woods and...I think makes them go mad or something, but I don't THINK she kills them?? I'm a little unsure b/c it took a month to read this.

Or I'm unsure b/c it's UNCLEAR. Just like the magic doesn't seem to follow a clear system. The rules seemingly made up as we go.

There's other characters that are mildly integrated into the story. The only other important ones being Adel, the red head with a secret so easily guessed, I'm assuming the author wasn't keeping it a secret from the readers. And Roman, the guy that died b/c of the Sevilla curse (all the "men" in his bloodline don't live past their 30s).

**SPOILERS. LIKE IT'LL RUIN THE BOOK SPOILERS**

I was so bored with this book. I kept waiting for something to happen. I thought this was a horror, so that alone was wildly disappointing.

Not only was there nothing scary in this book, but the author did several things that personally irk me:

The book summary made me initially think the main character was at least in college already, so that confused me for a hot minute.

The magic was inconsistent. Why did La Cegua grant any wish?? If she's vengeful why grant the wish to free Roman? Why grant the wish to save Marina? Did Marina have a different memory of the car hitting her than Gabe did b/c of magic reasons or is she just a liar?? If the car didn't hit her why was her ankle messed up??

Anyway.

I kept waiting for La Cegua to lure a bunch of men into the woods. For something to happen other than Ceci getting weirdly greedy and wishing to get into art school and not leave town. It was all so inconsequential.

And Marina inviting Ceci's old friend and ex just so Ceci and Jamie can have The Misunderstanding was SO POINTLESS AND ANNOYING.

Adel had the only clear motive once you find out she was trapped in a cavern for years. Her death was stupid though and clearly just the author being like "I just need to get rid of this one."

(Also, I got that the author was attempting to write about trauma but it didn't feel accurate. Plus no one was traumatized seeing a woman get crushed to death by rocks???)

Also Roman being like La Cegua is faking it when her statue starts disintegrating?? Was he being a dick?? Or was she really faking it?? And if so, WHY???

Ceci being a Sevilla was fine as a twist, a little easily guessed but that didn't bother me. What bothered me was, why was the curse about only men at the beginning of the book but not at the end?? And why would La Cegua grant her wishes if she wanted to kill her?????

AND CECI RUNNING OUT OF THE SECURED ROOM WHEN ADEL IS TRYING TO KILL THEM. My least favorite part.

I didn't like Ceci and I was neutral about pretty much every other character.

This book took like a month to read when it should have taken like 5 days max.

This review feels scattered, probably cuz that's what this book felt like.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

These Vengeful Wishes is perfect for anyone who loves family secrets. Who loves the ideas of coming back to a place you should know, that your family has history, but feels like a land of isolation. Where everyone is in on an inside joke. With folktale influences, These Vengeful Wishes is spooky and haunted, but maybe not in the way you think. There's a distinct sense of curses, of chills running down your spines, and Montalban does a phenomenal job at infusing the atmosphere. But there's also a sense that the past is reaching, clawing, back to reach us. That things left unsaid are speaking out.

Ceci and her mother move a small town filled with secrets, ghost stories and curses. Loosely based on Nicaraguan folklore of La Cegua -a vengeful female spirit with the face of a horse skull, the story unfolds with Ceci exploring woods behind her house and the stories (or curses!) that tie the house she is living in with the myth. As she investigates the woods, a missing boy from two decades ago and a eerie connection with her mother, Ceci comes to sympathize with the spirit and her own sadness during the process.

Quite an engaging read, almost predictable how it would end but the process was enjoyable nonetheless.

I really loved learning more about the Seville family, and just how Ceci's mom was connected to them. Some of the reveal was obvious--like, gee, i wonder why someone could be connected to a generational curse?--but there was enough going on around that the reveal was still very exciting, especially when you add characters like Adel to the mix. Overall, i thought this was a really cool concept; of COURSE Ceci would understand La Cegua in a way the Seville boys couldn't. That's her culture; the only reason it harms them is because they took something first. I love the ending, and I love how Ceci learns to accept love in her life.

I think Jamie really was the perfect choice for a romance, but I feel like we got so little of his story. Ordinarily, I wouldn't want to say a story needs more of a man, but I think it could've helped them connect deeper if we'd explored his life a bit more, though what we did get was really illuminating. Also, this is definitely a me problem, but as an artist myself, I just couldn't relate to Ceci wanting to go to an art school that bad. All I could think about is my cousin who went, and how he said he learned so much more in other places, after. Still, I could see that being an artist was VERY important for ceci

Ceci and her mother are forced back to her mother's hometown when Ceci's stepfather is arrested for fraud. When they arrive, Ceci keeps hearing rumors of a curse from La Cegua. Everyone is told to stay out of the woods but curiosity killed the cat and Ceci cannot help herself. Along with her new friend Jamie, they will uncover strange and creepy things. I loved the story. It was so creepy and interesting.

I enjoyed this supernatural / horror very much. The characters were well developed, and the suspense kept me engaged the whole time. Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy. I would recommend this to any teen looking for a thriller.
