Do we control our fate? Or does fate control us?

In the Empire of Vasyla, the death of the emperor marks the beginning of a bloody tradition: a battle between royal scions for the crown.

Calypso Pallas is a cursed princess, doomed to destroy her country. Ophelya Nephus is a forgotten heiress, living in her sister’s shadow. Leandre Elias is a trusted guard with no memory of his past.

As strange events ripple across the empire, the fate of the realm may rest in the hands of these three misfits. But when they can barely control their own destinies, how can they hope to change the fate of their country?

Perfect for readers who love slow-burn fantasy, found family dynamics, and stories that challenge tradition.

This book was absolutely amazing! I’m so glad I got to read this book! I was immersed in this story and I haven’t read a fantasy novel without romance in a long time it was kind of nice to take a break from romance even Romantasy. The plot twists got me. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for more and it kept coming. And I loved the cliffhanger at the end of this book and I can’t wait to read what happens next. I loved Calypso. I grew an attachment to her from the beginning, and I loved Ophelya for being her close friend and almost sister. And Leandre; he was so so sweet and I’m honestly glad that him and Calypso had a strictly platonic relationship. At first I thought there was more between them but then I quickly realized that it was just a friendship and to be honest, I loved that more than I would’ve loved a relationship in this book. And out of the Royal Scion siblings I liked Avalon, Hectyr, and Kyril. I didn’t really have complaints on the others because we didn’t know a ton about them. And I loved all of the different POVs we got in this book. It gave us just enough information I feel like. Go pick up this book you guys you will not be disappointed!

The Final Born is a YA fantasy with influence from Greek mythology. The book starts with showing the many different species of creatures that live in this world, and I really appreciated it. Unfortunately the variety of characters and species wasn’t as prominent in the story as I had hoped. Hopefully we will see more of them in the sequel, because the writing is really good and descriptive.

There’s multiple POVs in the book. Most are from the three main characters, but there’s the occasional secondary character POV as well in between. Since they’re in third person, it’s easier to follow along the different characters than when you have multiple POVs in first person. The main problem with multiple POVs for me is the fact that more often than not here’s one character I don’t care about. Something that makes reading their POV something that you just have to get through to get back to the good stuff. That was the case here. While I enjoyed reading the adventures of Calypso, the cursed princess who dreams of being a knight, and Ophelya, the second heiress trying to navigate the political scene, I didn’t really care much for Calypso’s guard Leandre.

While the pacing felt a bit rushed at times, this was overall an enjoyable and fast read. The ending had so much going on, that I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen next.

Calypso has long since been shunned and treated as a burden by the people of the Empire of Vasyla for her appearance, and widely believed to be cursed, and the bringer of destruction for being born under the same star as a tyrannical, long dead, royal scion. However, as the youngest daughter of Emperor Oryn, Calypso is determined to create a new life for herself, separating herself from her royal heritage, and putting her training and skills to the test, to become a knight in the Emperor's army, rather than fighting her siblings to the death for the throne she's never wanted. Calypso is brave, ferocious and incredibly resilient, her tenacity to create a new path for herself, and follow her own dreams was inspiring, she harbours a deep magickal power within her, one that's long since been outlawed and feared throughout the Empire.

Ophelya Nephus, Calypso's best friend, and reluctant heiress to Vaales, has been thrust into the role, after the death of her sister. Isolated and alone, she finds herself stuck in the middle of her parents toxic relationship, never quite being enough for either of them, and forced to live in the shadow of her perfect, protective, and supportive sister. Ophelya is a powerhouse of intelligence and cunning, she moves through the world with an easy grace, and uses her impeccable observational skills and her penchant for being underestimated to her advantage. Ophelya is determined to change the way her kingdom is run, as well as trying to protect her best friend, Calypso, from her impulsive and reckless whims along the way. I found her character art was more reserved and quietly impactful compare to the others, focusing more acutely on her intelligence, resilience and ability to see through the corruption within the political courts, I really enjoyed watching her as she navigates this sinister landscape.

Leandre, Calypso's personal, appointed guard, has only hazy fog in place of his past memories. Always feeling there's a part of him missing, Leandre is never quite 100% present, longing to access the parts of his life that have been wiped from his memory. Rigid, and rule following to a fault, Leandre has dedicated his life to protecting Calypso from consistent assassination attempts, whilst desperately trying to figure out what he wants out of life, and how to continue to protect her, whilst taking his future into his own hands.

I was immediately pulled in by the gorgeous character and creature art at the beginning, which I felt added to the immersive nature of the world. It's obvious just how deeply imagined and complex this world is, full of intriguing and enthralling lore interwoven throughout the story, and a twisting plot that keeps you enamoured from start to finish.

I did find some parts were a little repetitive, and some of the dialogue between characters came off a little more childish, and the pace was a little odd at times. I also, didn't feel as connected to the characters as much as I'd have liked, but the plot is really intricate and it's definitely a refreshing and immersive take on fantasy worlds and creatures.

If you love a fantastical world, filled with political intrigue, vibrant characters who ooze personality, epic adventure, and a slow burn plot, packed full of gut-punching twists, and messages to remind you of the power of hope, friendships and having belief in yourself and capabilities in treacherous and dangerous times, then run and pick this one up.

I absolutely loved this book! I wasn’t 100% what to expect going in and I ended up loving the ride it took me on. I love how it is written parallel to a Greek Mythology retelling, but in a world of non-human characters we’ve never met before. There were plenty of twists that I didn’t expect - especially the end! I also really enjoyed the multiple POVs throughout the book from our three MCs as well as a few chapters from supporting characters’ POV. I hope there are many more to come - I’m not ready to say goodbye to Cal, Ophelia, and Leandre!

The world building in this book was top tierrrr! Once I started I could not stop reading. This was such a cool blend of prophesies and magic and mythical creatures. With a heavily Greek inspired world (I mean FMCs name is Calypso) it easily hooked my attention because I LIVE for mythology.

It’s a great book if you are wanting to make that switch over to fantasy. No spice, all plot and despite what my handle says, I do enjoy a non spicy book from time to time 🤭

When the Lord passes, there is a challenge the siblings must compete in of survival to see who will defeat the others to rule next. It is called The Challenge of Cressyda.
Calypso is considered an ill omen after being born under the star of the White Tern. The last ruler who was born under that star, chaos ensued. And there is a prophecy that this is to happen again. So, Calypso and her two best friends, Leandre and Ophelya, are trying to find a way for Calypso to escape and avoid the trials altogether. For even if she were to survive, none of the people would want her as ruler.

This book had a lot of potential. I noticed one of the other reviews mentioned if you’re just getting into fantasy, this is a good book to start with, and I would agree. It’s very YA, has simple world building and great characters you can’t help but love.

What I enjoyed is the thought that went into this world and the unique mythical creatures in this world, such as cyclops and centaurs. You get to learn about them at the beginning and even have beautiful artwork to look at too.

I always love a Roman/Grecian style setting in a book. There’s something about that era that just draws me in, very fantasy-like I suppose 😂

There are a lot more POVs than I expected. We have the three main POVs and then we have some sprinkled about of other POVs that I actually liked because it gave us insight on their side of the spectrum and to see what they were thinking.

I liked the characters for the most part. No one truly stood out to me, except for Hectyr. He was an enigma and I really enjoyed his arc in this book and he threw me for a loop because I wasn’t sure what his endgame was! But he added a nice touch to the story! I also really liked the friendship between Calypso, Leandre and Ophelya. It was realistic and relatable with them being so close, then doubting each other, their friendship suffering, and learning and earning forgiveness, it was well done!

That all being said, I neither disliked this book, nor loved it. I had some mixed feelings about it by the end. It’s more 3.5 ⭐️ for me.

So, this book is very YA, although, the MCs are supposed to be 20 and older. That to me was odd, but the way it’s written is YA. I guess a unique take on YA? However, all the characters acted like they were 16 or so, which made it hard for me to remember they were actually a lot older than that 😅

This is also supposed to be like a Greek or Roman style world, but some of the words and phrases seemed VERY modern day. And a lot of the explanation about the world, the people, and other details were told to me rather than shown. Also, some details that I think were important were not mentioned until randomly later, and it gave me the impression that I should have known already.

Overall, it’s a good story, I really enjoyed the characters and the friendships in here, and I think there’s supposed to be another book, so I will read it since I’m curious to see how it will continue.

I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was immediately enamoured by the beautiful character and creature art at the beginning of the book. i loved how it was written in a world of non-human characters and would have loved to explore these types of characters a little more in the story. But I did enjoy the encyclopedia-entry-esque beginning.

As for the plot itself, I really enjoyed the prophecies, magic and rewritten history inspired by Greek Mythology. The authors take on fantasy worlds and creatures was written very well and the world building was vivid throughout the book. The plot was intricate and there were a lot of twists and turns that kept me interested. It was also enjoyable to read a book which focused more on friendships and the dynamic between characters than romance, although i did spy a small hint of a blossoming romance between two of the characters I loved the most!
I also loved the multiple POV! Each character was so different but I enjoyed all of their perspectives, even the side characters were so interesting to me and I really hope we can learn more about the rest of the royal scions in the next book!

I did find some parts were a little repetitive, and the pace was a little odd at times. It felt really fast sometimes, I don't know if it was just how I was reading but the second half of the book felt a little rushed.

Despite that I'd recommend this book to you if love a fantastical world, filled with Greek mythological creatures, political intrigue, wild magic, a whole cast of characters with vibrant personalities, (including some headstrong independent women) epic adventure, and a plot packed full of twists and turns that focuses on the bond between friends.

This is an arc review - it did not impact my thoughts.

📚ARC REVIEW📚

Man this was GOOD! The world building in this book was unlike any other! I found myself completely enthralled with how descriptive each page was. This book is an intense world building fantasy book and the first installment in her Shards of Magick Series by Mason Monteith. The way she was able to incorporate magic, mythical creatures, prophecies, curses and so much more is nothing short of incredible! This book contains multiple POV’s but mainly follows our main characters: Calypso a cursed princess, Leandre her trusted guard and Ophelya a second heiress as they try to navigate their purpose in the Empire of Vasyla and if the lives that are fated for them can be changed or if they will be allowed to make their own destinies. With the Emperor on his death bed it is tradition that all the royal children must fight to the death and the last one standing will become the new ruler of the empire (HUNGER GAME VIBES 😎) However as time draws near to the Emperor‘s death the three must race against the clock to find a way to change their fates and save the empire. With cults, conspiracies, political intrigue, and a touch of mystery the trio discovers that there is more than meets the eye to what they’ve been told and the empire may be in more danger than they thought.

A BIG THANK YOU to Mason Monteith for providing this eARC book to me. I absolutely loved it and i’m so grateful for the opportunity!

This book will be published on May 7th so please walk, no, RUN to Amazon or Barnes and Noble to preorder your copy!

📖 ARC Review 📖

The Final Born was a fun and entertaining read. It is perfect for someone trying to dip their toes into the world of fantasy. I would classify it as YA and suitable for ages 13+.

The story follows three main characters; Cal (Calypso), Leandre, and Ophelya as they make their way through the Roman-like world of Vasyla. Fate seems to have set a course for each of them, and yet they each want more than the path laid before them. Calypso wants more than to eventually fight her siblings in a battle to the death. Leandre wants to remember his past and to know who he is. Ophelya desperately wishes she didn’t have to fill the shoes left behind by her sister. Will they be able to overcome fate and choose their own destinies?

Vasyla is a world of magick, curses, spells, intrigue, betrayals, power-hungry courtesans, and dangerous monsters. There are six people groups including humans, Centaurs, Skorvians, Cyclops, Voltuans, and Ophiophors that make up this fantasy world.

I enjoyed the story and the variety of characters. It was easy to read and the plot twist at the end was unexpected for sure. I gave it three stars because while the story was interesting I often felt like I was missing information and as the story progressed I had more questions than answers, not fully understanding one plot point before another was introduced.
Otherwise the story was creative and the characters were fun, and I think Mason will only continue to deliver better and better books. I look forward to the next book!

Tropes:

Summary:
The Final Born is Mason Monteith’s debut novel and they did not disappoint! With multiple POVs, this book follows 3 main characters: Calypso (a curse princess), Leandre (Calypso’s guard), and Ophelya (a second heiress); they discover their purpose in the Empire of Vasyla and if their lives that has been fated for them can be changed or if they’re able to create their own destines. The Emperor is close to death meaning that the royal children must fight one another to death to see who will become the next ruler of the Empire of Vasyla.

My thoughts:
I had no idea what I was going into when I signed up for this ARC, I just saw Greek inspired and thought “sign me tf up!” Loved, not only the world building, but also the mythical creatures that Monteith was able to incorporate. Monteith has a lot of knowledge with mythology, as evidenced by this book! There were so many creatures that aren’t well know that they were able to introduce to the audience before the book even starts. You can really tell that Monteith put their all in The Final Born

The Final Born is available TODAY (May 7th, 2024)! Greek mythology lovers, this one is definitely for you!!

Do we control our fate? Or does fate control us?

Final Born is a fantasy adventure that is told in multiple POV. There are three main points fo view with some other points of view scattered throughout the story. I was really interested in the development of the world and in getting to know all of the characters.

Calypso is determined to make more for herself than just being the cursed princess. She grabs her two friends and tries to escape to a better life, by avoiding royal trials that she must complete in to become the next ruler. But no one wants a cursed ruler, so off they go. The magic in the world was interesting as were the creatures (though I am hoping that we see more on the creature front in the next book) Lots of twists, turns and surprises kept the book moving and interesting. This was a good read. I was hoping for some romance with the story, but I think the lack of romance will appeal to younger readers and readers looking for a pure fantasy (since there are so many romantasies out right now) I believe the characters are a little older than the young adult age group, but this book has YA fantasy vibes. Overall this book was good, but didn't completely blow me away.

Final Born is great for readers looking for a fantasy that is not romance heavy and loves the found family trope. The cast of characters were great and they really added to my overall enjoyment of the story.

Check out final born if you enjoy:
-Found family
-chosen one
-wild vs controlled magic
-self-discovery
-intensive worldbuilding
-mythical creatures
-multi POV

The Final Born by Mason Monteith is one of the greatest fantasy novels I’ve ever read. The Final Born follows Calypso Pallas as she navigates through a world that despises her due to a prophetic curse. Her and her sibling Royal Scions must battle for the throne after their father’s slow passing. She must work with or against her own family and friends to either make or break the prophecy.

I won’t lie, this book started off a bit slow and I thought I wasn’t going to be able to keep up considering how many characters there are but it highly lived up to its potential. The plot was very well written and executed and if you like character driven stories, this is definitely the book for you. Once the story began to pick up, I was hit with plot twist after plot twist that left me wanting to continue reading. I loved the way the characters themselves were written, each having their own unique voice. It felt as though I was actually standing beside them with each chapter. The one thing that completely stood out to me was the world building. The city of Lyreas and the empire of Vasyla themselves were both very detailed and well written. As well as the way the religion of the people and their connections to the Aspects. I couldn’t get enough of this book and if you’re interested in Fantasy, I recommend The Final Born as your next read.

3.75 ⭐️ rounded up to 4

I wasn’t 100% sure what I was getting myself into with The Final Born, but I knew I’d probably enjoy it since it has magic, mythical creatures, a found family, and set in a fantasy greek world.

The story follows Calypso, Leandre, and Ophelia as they figure out how to overcome their destinies. Calypso is a cursed princess who will soon have to fight her siblings to the death once their father - the king - dies (massive Hunger Games vibes, also totally up my alley). Leandre is Calypso’s only guard, yet can’t remember how he even ended up in Vaslya. Ophelia is an heiress desperately trying to prove herself to her parents, while having to fill the shoes of her dead sister.

Calypso & her friends want more than these fates, so The Final Born takes us through the their pov’s as they navigate through conspiracies, hatred, lies, political intrigue, and other complications. However, there’s more than meets the eye, and find themselves running out of time.

While I enjoyed this novel, at times I felt like the pace was a little bit too rushed and missing information. while I wish more questions were answered, I still loved living vicariously through the characters, and I’m excited to see what Mason writes about in the future!

For those who want a quick YA fantasy i have the perfect book for you. The final born is the first book from Shards of Magick. We have a cursed Princess just because she was so unlucky to be born under the star of White Tern. So, now, all she wants is to save the world from the destruction! With the help from her sister and her guard, they try to change their fate so they can make their own decisions.

I really enjoyed the story. From the first pages, i was enchanted! The world-building and the characters are so interesting, i love that at the beginning, we can find a presentation of the races of Vasyla and that there are even drawings when them! We need more books like this. It makes it so much easier to imagine everything so clear. There are a lots of mystical creatures from the Greek mythology, but also some that i never heard about.

All in all, i can say The final born was a quick read with a lots of adventures and i can't wait to see what's going to happen next. Thank you @bookofmatchesmedia and @bookishmasonmonteith for the opportunity to read the book.

Developed the same way as many high fantasy worlds it brought something unique to the table. Given much Greek or Roman mythology type creatures coupled by royal intrigue & a competition for the throne to become the next ruler by the twisted notion of unaliving siblings. It had intrigue.

I especially love these small details such as the fact that birds are sacred. Along with the explanations of the ruling houses.

Calypso was truly a main character worthy of capturing attention. She certainly captured mine with the fact that she is not only one of the Royal Scions of which the contest is for but she paves her own path in life & created a friend group she can rely upon.

I especially love the garden scene that I won't detail due to spoilers but if you decide to read it, it reads just like an adventure to uncover secrets.

With every twist, darkness, & a sense of betrayal around the corner...

It had me feeling captivated, wonderstruck, adventurous, & curious.

Yes it was an ARC. My opinions are mine.

I had the privilege of receiving an ARC from Mason Monteith for her Greek Mythology inspired novel, The Final Born. This YA fantasy is the first book in a series, and it had me clamoring for the next book!

That magic system, world building, and plot was very thought out. Mason’s ability to weave in multiple POVs, building out the character’s arc, maintaining a pace that was engaging, and incorporating side characters, while building the plot was nothing short of amazing.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Greek inspired world with all the fantastical creatures, and the hierarchy involved.

While there was no spice, the plot was engaging and the momentum that pushed me to keep turning the page.

Overall, this was a great introduction to Mason Monteith, and I cannot wait to see what’s to come in the series.

I highly recommend this book for those who love to dip their toes into the fantasy genre, and want a delicious bite out of world building! Add this to your list!

The Greek inspired world was unique, diverse, and intriguing. Calypso is my favorite character. I really enjoyed her storyline and POV. She's an underdog with a fighting spirit (and forbidden magic) that's underestimated being the 'cursed' princess.

I wasn't a huge fan of the 3rd person multiple POV in this book. It went well at first but then dragged a bit and went further than just the three main characters. I feel like this could have been better in one or two POV. I found myself wanting to skip a few chapters because of this and the difference in pacing between POVs. But overall, I enjoyed the book and give it a 3.5 star rating.

“The Final Born” by Mason Monteith was a fun and entertaining read that had me diving into a world packed with magic, prophecy, and intrigue. Mason does a wonderful job weaving a tale that feels like a fresh take on Greek mythology, set in a realm inhabited by captivating non-human characters. With its multiple points of view, the narrative keeps you engaged as you follow the journey of Cal, Ophelia, and Leandre, three very likable protagonists as they navigate their destinies while dealing with the political turmoil and ancient traditions within their city. The rich world-building, coupled with unexpected twists, makes this book a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts.

I definitely look forward to seeing what happens in the rest of the Shards of Magick series, and highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates world-building and fantasy books with a touch of Greek mythology.

This is a multi-POV story, with a focus on 3 main characters. You are following Calypso, a cursed princess, Ophelya, an heiress, and Leandre, Calypso's guard, as they struggle to carve their own paths and keep eachother safe.

I really enjoyed this book, solid 4⭐️ for me. I had a good time, and enjoyed each of the main characters. All are very likeable and watching their growth just made me happy. I even enjoyed all the side POV's. Each one offers something new to the story, and none feel pointless or overdone. There is no romance, but the found family and plot in this are strong enough to hold their own.

If you like fantasy with found family, court politics and scheming, and plenty of action this is one I recommend.

First of all thank you to @bookofmatchesmedia for providing an eARC for review! All thoughts are my own.

It took me a little bit into the book to fully get into it, but once I did I absolutely loved it. And I think with learning the new world and the main characters this was why I need that extra time to get into it. Plus without three complex and unique main characters all working to similar goals together, we get my favorite trope of found family.

The battle royale-style competition that requires the royal scions to battle to the death for the throne idea may not be a new one, but it is definitely well used in this story and has a great twist to it. I felt the pacing was great and the story plotted on in a way that kept my attention throughout.

I also really enjoyed the images of the different races of creatures at the start of the book. It was super fascinating and very helpful to imagine the characters.

"𝐃𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐞? 𝐎𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐮𝐬?"

Princess Calypso is the youngest of 7 and the ast born child of the King. Three King's health is failing which means the Challenge of Cressyda will soon begin, where all 7 siblings will fight to the death for the crown. Calypso has no desire for the crown or to die. She hopes to change her fate by becoming a knight. She unwittingly awakens an ancient knight and armor, Oboryn.

With the help of her friends Leandre and Ophelya can Cal overcome her fate?

I thought it was an interesting take that Magick has been outlawed except for water Magick. Also how a curse was enacted upon the King's death. So many deceptions, secrets and lies!!!

I do wish there was more action as it seems most of it occurred in the last 20%

The worldbuilding in this book was top-notch, although it did take a bit of time to really get going. However, once the pace picked up, I was hooked! Once the pace really picked up, the excitement and tension were palpable, and I found myself eagerly turning pages to see what would happen next.

I found myself thoroughly invested in all of the main characters—they were all so well-developed and interesting in their own right. Honestly, I can't even choose a favorite! The characters were really a highlight for me! Each one brought something unique to the story, and I loved getting to know them all.

Overall, this book was a thrilling ride filled with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I think this book would have also been fine ending here, though I am curious how this series will continue.

I’ve always been a sucker for mythology’s and this book was perfect for that! Having all the different species in one world was very enjoyable to read. And those last 3 chapters had me hanging on to my seat!! I loved how this book set its self apart from other books and felt like a fresh and different read with a new plot and story I’ve never read before! I very easily had favorite characters and I’m always so good at guessing endings but this book managed to leave me surprised with all the twist and turns. Overall I fairly enjoyed this book and would recommend to those who are looking for a unique and enjoyable read🗡️

ARC review 🖤

This was a fun Greek inspired fantasy. I did enjoy the multi POV’s, the court intrigue, and the friendship between the 3 main characters.
It did start to feel a bit repetitive in some spots but it wasn’t enough to dissuade me from reading further.
I’d like to see a more in depth look into the magic of the realm as I found it interesting but felt we got surface level info.
The writing was well done and easy to follow and the world building was immersive.
I would be interested to read book 2!

A super unique world created based on Greek mythology with hints of a hunger games vibe. Calypso is one of 7 children of the emperor and is said to be cursed to destroy the kingdom. She grew up knowing once her father dies, she would have to fight her half-siblings to the death to determine who would rule next. Can she fight the fate she’s been told is hers for her entire life?
I loved the world building in this story and the twists this story took. They were well executed and added a lot to the story. I would recommend this to someone looking for a new ya fantasy.

As far as debut fantasy goes, this story is pretty inclusive. It recognizes queer characters, body positivity in the FMC, and inclusivity. I really liked the idea of the story and general development. The roles that Opheyla and Calypso play interact so well together. However, I felt that Leandre could have had more impactful scenes. Some of the siblings could have been a bit more clear and developed in their interactions. There were several parts I was left confused and had to re-read. I am excited to see how things progress in book 2!

Overall GREAT book!! It’s technically a 3.5 star read in my opinion but you should know I’m a really harsh rater. The plot was really AMAZING and well thought out however there were some consistent grammar errors on my kindle version, would reccommend if you’re looking for something adventurous and dystopian with a death challenge but with a royal empire and princess vibes. Didn’t particularly like the last bit of the ending but i guess that’s the point of a book series! there’s still room for things to be fixed by the fmc

This book needs you to pay attention! Lots of names and different types of characters. When I was distracted with other things I definitely lost track of what was going on and that’s not something I do often.
That being said, I loved all of the different curses and how they came into play. I’m also looking forward to see how the next one plays out.
