Well-researched, perhaps too granular for a casual reader. I recall thinking I didn’t need all the statistics, but in retrospect they gave a cumulative picture of the growth of NYC. But I’m glad to have read it, as it filled in the gaps in my knowledge of the city’s history. One complaint: it could have used a better copy editor. The text is rife with misspellings, and redundant or eluded words. Having lived the first half of my life in the Borough of Queens, I appreciated reading about streets and buildings I know well, but now understand some of the origins.
Very interesting read. The author delved into stories, facts and figures that I have never read anywhere else. He brought the building of New York to life telling about previously unheralded building contractors, trade craftmen and their unions and associations that adapted with the times to build the dreams of the architects.
