Yukito is a son of a zealot cult leader in modern Japan worshipping a god called Mitama. His father believes Yukito will reincarnate with special powers and sacrifices him. And Yukito does revive, as himself, but in a different world and with no powers.

The world has no magic, god or concept of religion. At first Yukito thinks it’s a great thing. But when the few friends he’s made, first ones ever, are killed by the emperor’s orders, he finds himself praying for Mitama. And a miracle happens—and Mitama appears. Only, not like he imagined. Mitama is a little girl who claims to have been around since the dawn of time, but is rather useless. Even more so, since she has no powers without followers.

Fearing the emperor’s retribution, Yukito needs another miracle, and for that he needs Mitama in full power. That requires worshippers. But how to gain those in a world with no concept of religion?

Yukito is sincere in his attemps to help the villagers, and finds himself channeling the teachings of a father he hates. Mitama slowly gains followers, but it’s not enough. Because for a world with no magic, the emperor has some very magical soldiers.

This was kind of funny, and definitely absurd, especially towards the end. But I’m not sure I liked it enough, and I definitely didn’t like the art, even without the usual gratuituous obsession with huge breasts. I probably won’t continue with this.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

all hail mitama-sama our mascot👹
the story and art gets better progressively, it was a bit slow at the first few chapters but it gets better. At the start the art was eh, but it got better as well. I wouldn't say the story makes you actually attached to the side characters or anything, but I enjoy watching yukito connect to the teachings of his cult dad, also ber looks way better as a female she so hawt<3

This is definitely an action series oriented towards teenage boys, in the worst possible way, meaning obnoxious big-boobed fan service and sexual harassment as a running gag.

That out of the way, the premise is actually very interesting. Yukito, the son of a former cult leader, is reincarnated in a world where there are no gods or concept of gods, though the Emperor may function as one, bestowing supernatural power upon his archons. Yukito's ordinary life is turned upside down when he ends up praying to the god of his father's cult in order to attempt to save the lives of his friends, summoning the childlike god Mitama. In order to save the lives of the people in the village fhat welcomed him, Yukito must recruit followers to Mitama to power her up for when the imperial army is sent to wipe the village out.

What follows is an interesting exploration, albeit one veiled in silliness, of what religion or cults even are, and the ways in which religion, in-group benefits, mutual aid, imperialism, and other ideas are tied together.

Wrong format for a good read

I would have given this 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that the pages have been arranged in a western left to right format instead of Japanese right to left format. Please fix this grievous mistake post haste!

Very much a shonen manga. I do think the beginning was a little too dark for me though. I'm not a huge fan of blood/gore, so I think it maybe should've had some content warnings or something. Other than that, the premise is very interesting and pretty unique.

Thank you Edelweiss and publisher for the ARC.
