Rate this book
Yumiella Dolkness is your run-of-the-mill villainess in an otome RPG—except for the fact that she’s also secretly the overpowered hidden boss. But Yumiella wasn’t always Yumiella, you see. In her past life, she was nothing more than an introverted college student and devout gamer. So when she realizes that she’s been reincarnated as a hidden boss, she’s determined to steer clear of the protagonists and avoid her demise at their hands. All she wants is a nice, quiet life. Too bad when her gamer instincts kick in, Yumiella can’t just ignore her awesome stats… A girl’s gotta grind!

So, with plenty of time on her hands before starting life at the academy, she gets a little carried away and maxes out her level at 99. And when everyone else finds out, they get the wrong idea about her power—now they think she’s the Demon Lord! Is this OP villainess strong enough to win back the peaceful life she always wanted?!

I really like it, but I think Yumiella could take some other decisions 🤔 she never questioned the fact that Patrick was a his majesty's spy neither Alicia stabbings her on the back, thus I think she's too naive for her own good 🤔 I'm feel proud of myself for actually read the light novel and don't wait for the anime.

(Read at JNC)

The plot of the light novel is fairly typical, girl is reborn in a new world as the hidden villain, and instead of going for the villain route, decided to simply grind levels and than enjoy her life. Since she has black hair, reached max level by the time she joins the Academy, and has all the social skills of a sledgehammer and is denser than lead, one can imagine how events go. The story is fairly entertaining, especially for its sub-genre (villainous isekai that is), which I am not a huge fan of. The characters, plot and world are fairly simple (cannot say the twists came as a surprise), but that was expected. The lack of a harem (reverse or otherwise) is a plus, and if you like this kind of humour the story will be to your liking. I am just not so sure I will stick to the series...

Uninteresting and Unoriginal

Nothing interesting about this. Plot is completely predictable, and there are no interesting story beats. Characters are one dimensional, boring, and hard to care about.

Beyond all of that, I cannot stand the writing style. The author lives to break the rule of "show don't tell." You don't get to make any assumptions about what's going on, or have any ideas as to who thinks what, because it is always explained to you.

Do yourself a favor and don't pick this one up.

Some dramatic differences to other adaptions...

I finally got around to reading the first light novel and I was surprised by how different the content of three major characters were in comparison to the anime and the manga. In fact, the difference in behavior for those three specific characters completely change the feel of the story. Major vibe check change.

For those of you trying to line things up with storyline content in common, this volume covers all of the content leading up to the defeat of the demon lord.

Spoilers ahead: if you're familiar with the anime, or if the manga has gotten far enough, you would remember that the hero of light, Alicia, basically reconciles with our villainess. There's even some shenanigans about her being mind controlled into doing things. There's none of that in the light novel. Alicia is prejudice and never stops being so. She even chooses to stab in the back the main character. It's kind of a real surprise that the characters so unredeemable. Additionally, two of the three love interests are so brainwashed by her that they never get a chance to redeem themselves either. The only one that gets redeemed is the Royal Prince. At this point, I'm very curious to see what volume two is going to provide.

I think I'll hop into volume two right after I take a nap.

Another light novel I'm reading having enjoyed the anime. Apparently, the anime has gone down very well in Japan, so I'm not the only one.

The plot is fairly standard: person is reborn as the villain of an otome game. There have been a few like this, most of them fairly good, actually. This one combines the OP protagonist trope with the 'I don't want to be the villainess' trope. Yumiella Dolkness (great name) has the memories of a dedicated gamer, so she sets about grinding levels from the age of ten. By the time she gets to the part where the game would start, she's already reached level 99, supposedly the maximum it's possible to reach. This would probably suck, but the delivery is excellent, and funny. Further hilarity ensues as she progresses to finally fighting the Demon Lord. It's worth a read.

Further, this is one of the best translations I've read. The English version reads like an English novel, rather than a Japanese one that's been translated mor or less word for word. Hats off to the translator.

Comparison to the anime: well, they changed a fair bit for the anime. The plot proceeds basically as in the book, but a lot of details were changed. In particular, the game heroine is a far more villainous character in the book. I won't say much more since it would spoil both book and anime. Not sure why they made the changes, tbh, but they're different, not worse (IMHO). I can't pick a favourite; they're different but equal.

A good read. I'd say very good for people who want to try Japanese light novels but never have.

As its title aptly describes, this is a story about a character who has reached the pinnacle of power. Set in a vaguely medieval fantasy world of magic and monsters, the main character, Yumellia Dolkness, must get through school life while enduring the fear and scorn of her fellow schoolmates, who discriminate against her for her hair colour.
Yes, this is set in a school. If you are tired of this setting, this story will do nothing to change your mind.

This story has some romance, some magical fights, and the discrimination does pose some problems to Yumellia. However, most of it feels lukewarm; nearly every problem has a solution within the very same chapter. Nothing poses much difficulty — each one serving as a diversion from its plot.

What, then, is the plot actually about? Though the story spends a lot of time on mundane details, it seems that the story is largely concerned with what it would feel like to try living like a normal person despite being immensely powerful — this was why the title initially drew me in.

However, I was quickly let down on that front. Her power level is revealed to everyone as soon as she arrives at her school, serving as an indomitable shield against any blatant harrassment. Furthermore, she gains powerful allies in the king, queen, and the newly appointed headmaster, all of whom are able to isolate her from any significant friction that would arise from interacting with her dissenters.

With the harassment so thoroughly dealt with, the social isolation that comes from discrimination and overwhelming power is the only point of conflict left. Except, even that matters very little, because Yumellia gains a her best friend incredibly fast and with no difficulty. All the more so because she is very content with having one friend (two, if you count a joke character that she rarely interacts with.) This in itself is no big deal, but combined with everything else, Yumellia has no enemies, no hardships.

As a result, there's nothing interesting left — not even the titular Demon Lord, whom Yumellia already outclasses.
Excusing the lack of conflict due to its slice-of-life focus doesn't work, because slice-of-lifes do, in fact, have conflicts and obstacles — just on a small scale.
The romance is lacking, as the two characters have little chemistry. They just have a little comedy routine and have a mutual respect for each other. It could work in real life, but it makes for a boring story.

Overall, I do not recommend. It's not bad, but it's not good.

Yumiella has been born into one of the games she used to play--as the optional hidden boss even stronger than the Demon Lord! But being a gamer at heart, she uses her new life to grind away in dungeons and somehow maxes out her level . . . all before starting the game's academy arc plot. Now she's trying to attend the academy when everyone thinks she's the Demon Lord.

This can be really similar to other novels in this particular niche, but it's still a pretty solid story. Yumiella is believably dense when it comes to social interactions. Her previous life involved very little interaction with people, but it still beat out her current life, where people have essentially avoided her from birth. So she can be forgiven for having a hard time understanding what people are actually like.

Much of the humor comes with her interactions with the students who ought to be the main characters of the game. Only Yumiella's mere presence is enough to completely derail the game's plot. Although she has her doubts about how well this was supposed to work when the saint is more interested in playing love events with her suitors than training to beat the bad guy that's going to destroy the world. And the saint's also decided Yumiella with her dark magic simply has to be the real enemy.

On the other hand, we have students like Patrick, who really does try to reach out to Yumiella. He soon finds himself playing the unwanted role of translator---trying to explain to her things that everyone else would take for granted, and trying to explain to everyone else what she ACTUALLY means when she says something they can easily interpret otherwise.

Overall this is a fun little story (and I believe it's even getting an anime soon). I'll be keeping an eye on where the series goes. I rate this book Recommended.

This caught my eye when manga shopping because of the video game tie-in and having that premise woven into the plot was mostly what made me enjoy it an average amount. I haven't read a lot of manga recently but this just seems kind of middle of the road as far as quality. One thing that did pull me out of it a lot was noticing that the artwork just feels very simplistic. Maybe I've just been spoiled by the gorgeous works of Witch Hat Atelier and Apothecary Diaries but I just noticed that the backgrounds especially were very sparse looking without hardly any detail as was the clothing. The plot was also very info-dumpy, telling rather than showing, and without hardly any actual events happening. I'm not looking for anything too action-focused and I prefer a story with a lot of conversations and exposition but this just felt kind of like nothing really actually happened.

I really did enjoy it and think it was cute, though. The video game references were good enough and the actual general plot outline did intrigue me enough to enjoy myself. I liked it most when the main character realized the parallels between the game she played with what was happening to her. It seemed a bit odd that there wasn't more explanation on how she got there or who she really is outside of this Hidden Boss character but honestly that doesn't seem totally out of left field for the manga world so I don't even fault it for that a lot.

I'm not sure that I will continue with this series even though this first book served the purpose of helping me nudge out of a severe reading slump and really helped me get through the day with something cozy feeling. If it was available at my library I would think about it but it's not and really it's not worth the price I paid on amazon for the quality that it is.

Daria USA TV show from the 90s is one of my favorite shows. This has an extreme Daira, adams family weds feel but more meat head. She has one goal get stronger which isn't bad. Kinda like a level junky. Just someone who cares deeply but in their own way and out of step with the world around them. The struggled to socialize and being out of step with the world is portrayed really well. I've never been a fan of otome villains books where she basically becomes the saintes blah blah blah. But this one is so good and not about that. I wish for a slightly slower pacing and a bit more world stuff going on. Just enjoying it. Well done
The denseness gets annoying in later chapters. But it's not full awful.
The one thing I wish she did was gain "skill" craft instead of just being level base strength. Yes, it works but as she says herself it's kinda ugly.

Just overall I'm glad I read it and it's filled with a lot of jokes. 4.1

I came across this light novel series after seeing a few episodes of new Anime which is based on it. The book tells the story of an unnamed young woman who finds herself reincarnated as the young Yumiella Dolkness. She quickly realises that she has been reborn as the villain of a Role Playing Game which she has played on Earth, and sets about levelling up her stats as much as she can and doing all she can to avoid her character's destiny as the final secret boss.
The book is intended as a comedy. Much of the humour comes from the ineptness of the protagonist who isn't very good at picking up social cues, and the difficulties which she faces as a result of relentless level grinding as a child which has brought her to level 99.
The story is fairly predictable but moderately entertaining, and comes to a satisfactory (if somewhat unlikely) conclusion.

I cannot express how much I love this series.
I initially watched the anime, but the curiosity got the best out of me and I ended up reading the light novel too.

The writing is very plain and fun; honestly everything happens in my brain like I am watching the anime. Yumiella's inner thoughts are absolutely hilarious, and I liked the heavier tone of the book compared to the anime.

I also really liked to see everyone be logical and pragmatic: the King deciding to not force Yumiella to do anything for fear of losing her, Yumiella and Patrick being very socially clever and capable of navigating court politics, were really refreshing.

Also, it had been a while since I shipped any two characters this much, no regrets here, Yumiella and Patrick deserve it! Their banter in the book is top-notch!

Overall, a very fun and cute read. Will continue the series!

loved the anime decided to read the books

I feel like I’ve watched most if not all of the “villainess” animes that are out and read most of the mangas and this one was one of my favourites so I decided to read the light novels and I’m glad I didn’t skip volume one as I like some of the difference in this even more. Mainly that the “heroine” is even less likeable or redeemable in the novel. I hope this means on the future volumes the prince loses interest in her too and maybe our lovable side character Eleanora has a shot at her dream. But honestly I just adore Patrick and our villainess, especially her awkwardness around other people.

I read the webnovel before, so I'm pleasantly surprised that they expanded the story for the lighjt novel.
Quick and easy read, and Yumiella as the MC provided just enough entertainment with her not-common-sense thinking patterns. It was also nice to see her finding and deciding on a goal for herself.
The romance is slow, but it was cute to read and they're supposed to be teenagers, so... even if mentally Yumiella was older, I excused her not-really-an-adult way of thinking by way of social isolation.

A silly tale

Yumiella Dolkness recalled her past life as a college student at the age of five. She realized she was in the world of an Otome game and scrambled to raise her level. Eventually she reached level 99, and that is where the story begins.

Due to her black hair, people discriminate against her, calling her the demon lord.

She finds people who love and respect her, and speeds through three years of high school.

Yumiella is a fun character. She has a stoic personality, and doesn’t notice social cues.

Even A Dense Villainess Can Become A Hero At Level 99!

It is a nice book with a dense female protagonist who takes her level grinding a bit too seriously before the game plot. The support characters are also well thought out with a storyline full of twisted traditional hurdles and a shocking ending. Thank you author for sharing your novel and I look forward to hearing about your next book.

A fun read

This is a fun read. Yumiella is deadpan and matter of fact. How she copes with the discrimination and isolation she faces by becoming stronger than everyone else.

While she’s able to make headway with people realizing their fear is irrational, I like how she learns that there is no changing some people who cling to their biases or people willing to use discrimination to their own ends.

I just really liked seeing her growth.

Oh my gosh I loved this book! The heroine is pretty calm despite the fact she’s completely overpowered. She’s a little clueless, but she’s been abandoned by her parents and discriminated against for all her life, so her inability to understand human emotion is pretty understandable. It’s sweetly romantic and the action is pretty fun. The ending is also rather poignant, making her very sympathetic.

Only mild cussing.

overpowered awesomeness

I love overpowered isekai villainesses, but rarely leave reviews. This novel was unique all the way through the afterword and finished at a refreshing ending versus dragging out across multiple novels. It is satisfying as a stand alone, but I am still excited to see that a second book is in the works. Fantastic!

I didn’t love this one.

I just couldn’t connect to the main character at all. She really didn’t have any personality. I could say the same for all the other characters as well unfortunately.

It was enjoyable enough, but there are better isekai villainess stories out there and I just don’t feel the need to explore what happens to any of these characters.

I won’t be continuing this one.

Better than the anime

Things still moved a bit quickly for real development, but I still had fun with the story. I'll read the next book for sure. I will say that the ending of the novel is very different from the anime and I appreciated that. It felt much more satisfying than the show did.

Even Better than the Anime

I loved the Level 99 anime (the VA for our Final Boss was fantastic and her voice played in my head as I read), the Vol 1 was even funnier and more thrilling and adventure.

Enjoy this volume and keep reading...and never trust a pink haired light magic user!

I read the web novel ages ago so I was instantly in for the light novel version. It's every bit as good as the original except with more and with a few significant changes that could drastically alter the plot going forward.

A fun little light novel. It’s not bad, but it also didn’t do anything terribly surprising. It was a quick read with a main character who is both socially dense, but somehow also self-aware, which made for inconsistent nonsense. But I had fun with it, so I give it a pass

Nothing brilliant, but not bad. The main character is motivated and intelligent. The bad guys are idiots, wonderfully so. There is one or more dragons included.

This doesn't add anything new or exciting to the genre. It is a comfort read with little in the way of surprises.

Good but not great

Plot 5/5
Dialogue 5/5
Writing 2/5 (was this a translation issue?)
Idea 5/5

The changes they made to the plot of the book for the anime weakened the story a bit, but I guess they made the story more self contained.

What I don’t understand about this book is how a twenty something year old girl who’s been reincarnated can be so naive. By the end she’s in her late thirties. I’ll give the series 1 more chance. But if she’s still an airhead then I’m done with it
