A light flickers in the silent room. Side by side in twin beds, the girls could be sleeping, except their pale skin is ice cold, and their closed eyes will never open again…
When the bodies of two teenage girls are discovered in a rundown New York City hotel room, Detective Maria Miller is called to the crime scene. The best friends were supposed to be at a sleepover miles away in the suburbs. With no record of the girls checking in and the room on the thirteenth floor closed off to guests, what were they doing there?
Sinister messages on their phones suggest the girls were lured to the hotel, using its reputation for hauntings as bait. The killer left no DNA behind and Maria’s efforts to trace their identity leads to a dead end. But Maria feels certain the murderer works at the hotel. How else did they access the room and know it was empty?
While Maria races to interview staff before another body turns up, the hotel manager shares an old newspaper article about an identical double murder decades before. Could the cases be linked? After a key suspect is found dead in his home, a discovery in the hotel room sends shivers down Maria’s spine. Can she uncover the secrets of the room on the thirteenth floor before she becomes its next victim?
Perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter, Mary Stone and A. J. Rivers, The Girls on Floor 13 will have you racing through the pages and sleeping with the lights on.
An old hotel with a creepy past, two dead girls, sinister messages, and strange visions. make for another creepy and fun book in the Detective Maria Miller series by Helen Phifer. I enjoyed the creepy paranormal vibe in this book. As with the previous books in the series, readers will see Detective Maire Miller and her partner, Frankie take on a paranormal case at a hotel which had an identical double murder which occurred decades earlier. I enjoy the paranormal aspect in this series and how Marie and Frankie are called in to investigate the cases which are supernatural in nature.
The thirteenth floor of a rundown New York City hotel room is no stranger to chilling events happening. Is the hotel haunted? Is the thirteenth floor haunted? What or who is responsible for the deaths of the two teenage girls? How is this case connected to the past case? That is what Marie and Franke (and myself) set out to solve in The Girls on Floor 13.
Having to solve a current case which is identical to a past case is reminiscent of the first book in the series, The Haunting on West 10th Street which also had a case in the present which resembled a case in the past.
Readers also get to see more of Marie's private life, which was a nice touch as readers of the series have seen her meet and date Harrison.
I enjoyed the mystery in this book as well as the many characters. This is the third book in the series and I highly recommend reading The Haunting on West 10th Street and Her Lost Soul as well. Can this book be read as a stand-alone? Perhaps, but the first two books in this series are so well done that I highly recommend reading them as well.
While I enjoyed this book, it was not my favorite in the series, that honor goes to Her Lost Soul. But this was a solid installment in the series, and I enjoyed the chilling, haunted, and creepy vibe in this book. Plus, the atmosphere is off the charts! A creepy old hotel paired with tension and twists, made for fun reading.
If you enjoy books with a paranormal element paired with a police procedural, this book series fits the bill!
Chilling, creepy, well written and atmospheric!
3.5 stars
Thank you to Storm Publishing and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Helen Phifer's Detective Maria Miller books are all super solid, page-turning Paranormal Mysteries. These books follow Maria Miller and her partner, Frankie, as they investigate cases that lack a normal, scientific explanation, and trust, these stories get DARK.
Located in New York City, there's certainly no lack of bizarre happenings for them to investigate. Maria and Frankie have quickly become one of my favorite detective duos.
In this, the 3rd-installment to the series, Maria and Frankie are summoned to the Parker Hotel, an infamously haunted NYC-hotel, after the bodies of two teenage girls are found murdered in one of the rooms on the 13th floor.
The girls are laid out on the twin beds, as if on display. It's a gruesome scene. As the investigation begins, the hotel manager shares some information with Maria that surprises her. A newspaper article reporting on an almost identical double murder that occurred in the hotel decades earlier.
In fact, a lot of people have suffered a tragic end at the hotel, some of the spirits reportedly still stalk the halls. Is there possibly some connection to the past in this case?
The more time they spend at the hotel, the more it seems to be effecting Maria. It feels like something has poisoned her body. It's truly a race against the clock as they try to find the murderer, before they have the opportunity to strike again.
I found this mystery very intriguing. Phifer wastes no time diving into the main case we're going to be examining. I appreciate how Phifer's not afraid to get graphic. This one is definitely not for the faint of heart.
I loved the inspiration I felt from IRL Haunted Hotels. I know the author had a particular hotel in NYC in mind, but it immediately made me think of the Cecil Hotel. I mean, the watertower connection...
There's def some creepy imagery in this. I feel like Phifer excels in that area. Let it be known, this is a true Paranormal Mystery. It's not one of those, is it, is it not, cases. Go into this knowing it is absolutely, 100% Paranormal.
As with many Adult Mystery series, you can read this as a standalone. I would recommend reading the other books in the series though, as there is a lot of great character development for Maria and Frankie, as well as some really fun side characters, over the course of the three books.
With this being said, you could actually read this one first and then if you loved it enough, go back and read the other two. I would certainly have no problem with doing that.
This gets absolutely wild at the end. It's so gripping. It's compelling throughout, but the pace and the stakes really increase the closer you get to the end.
Overall, this was an entertaining, fast-paced, creepy mystery. I love how Phifer pulls a historical perspective into her stories as well. The back and forth and the way everything builds out is just very pleasing.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Paranormal Mysteries, or Horror Mysteries. Maria and Frankie are like the Mulder and Scully of the NYPD.
Thank you to the publisher, Storm Publishing, for providing me with a copy to read and review. I can't wait to see what comes next for these characters!
I'm not really into paranormal or ghostly as really I don't believe in it.I really enjoy reading her crime books more.. I was surprised how much i enjoyed this read...this was the best one of the three books I was so engrossed..I love the main characters Detective Maire Miller and frankie investigates murders of two teenagers in the haunted Hotel where a woman in blue haunts the place and whoever looks upon her is certain of death..who is behind the killings something sinister or a killer?....a fantastic read so engaging and will this series continue...a five star read....
The third (and possibly last) in this enjoyable, easy reading series about a Mulder and Scully type partnership investigating murders that have a supernatural element to them.
Here the story is based in a creepy old hotel in NYC where murder, demons and ghosts are a plenty.
I’ve enjoyed this series immensely. Short, easy and fun reads that don’t take themselves too seriously but, alas this was my least favourite of the trilogy.
The story itself was fun but some of the dialogue was just downright weird. Characters were saying the oddest of things that didn’t seem natural at all. That with too many cliched lines from characters that just felt incredibly lazy.
Also there is a saccharine sweet overtone to this one. It’s not hinted at. You are hit over the head with it. I didn’t care for it at all.
So enjoyable if flawed and certainly the weakest of the three, it’s still worth your time as you will read it in no time at all.
Many thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley.
Goosebumps, Addictive shocking twists, detectives Maria Miller and Frankie Conroy in book three in this series, and Oh My God it's the best yet. Two teenagers Dory Painter and Michelle Carter are found in twin beds in a haunted hotel room 1303 at the Parker, ice cold with pale skin, eyes that will never open again looking like they are sleeping this is a murder scene. I love this series but as I said before this is the authors best yet, giving you everything that keeps your brain running like clockwork with every turns. The Girls on Floor 13 is the most gruesome crime thrillers I have read this year, what a spooky story it is, totally mind blowing that gives you the willys. What more can I say, excellent just excellent.
I Wanna thank NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
this one was an interesting one! The plot kept me hooked but at times I did get bored.. it was a little too paranormal for my taste.. not really into the whole ghost story stuff.. it was an ok read!
This is a great crime thriller with a supernatural twist. Detective Maria Miller and her partner Frankie are called to a hotel where two teenagers have been found dead. Maria gets a bad feeling about the place and when she sees a ghostly figure, she knows it’s a case they need to investigate. There’s a dark energy at the hotel and soon Maria is having nightmares and becomes very ill. Father Anthony is able to help her, so she asks for his help to rid the hotel of the evil energy. Things don’t quite go to plan and it’s clear that whatever is causing the deaths, isn’t done yet. This is a great read. Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
The Girls on Floor 13 by Helen Phifer is the third in the Maria Miller paranormal detective series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Storm Publishing and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background:(Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) Detective Maria Miller lives in Greenwich Village, in an old apartment building. She occasionally dates super-rich Harrison Williams, who wants more out of the relationship than does Maria. Her police partner and best-friend is Frankie Conroy, and he too would like to further their relationship. Due to a case they solved which involved the supernatural, Frankie and Maria now head a new department looking into unusual and strange crimes. Her elderly neighbours Missy & Emilia have become friends, and are quite keen on the supernatural aspects of Maria's cases.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) Teenager Dory Painter is hooked on ghosts, and convinces her best friend Michelle Carter to skip school and take the train to New York. She found someone who will let them into the 13th floor of the Parker Hotel, which is supposed to be one of the most haunted hotels in New York.
But their trip is short-lived. Both are killed and laid out on the beds in Room 1303. They are not the first to have died in that room.
Maria and Frankie are sure the girls were lured there, and it had to be someone in the hotel. Rickie, the hotel manager, shows them an old newspaper article about an identical double murder from 40 years before. Do they have a copycat? Or is there more to this hotel than can be explained?
My Opinions: I couldn't wait to start the third book in this series. I absolutely love Maria, and Frankie is a hoot. These characters are wonderful, and the side characters are just as interesting (Missy & Emilia in particular).
As always, this book was full of horror and humour...which is a strange combination which works well.
These are just really fun supernatural books to read, and I fear this run may be coming to an end, but I sincerely hope not.

There’s always a bit of a risk with reading a book in a series without having read anything else, but I don’t think that unduly affected my experience here. I may have known a little more about the detective duo and their relationship, but enough is revealed to help piece things together. The story begins in rather macabre fashion. A fire is discovered in a hotel that is renowned for unusual events taking place there. As this is dealt with, there is then the discovery of the bodies of two teenage girls whose feet have been removed. Our detectives are called in to the scene (though it seems they’re acting out of their jurisdiction) and soon learn that the hotel has a chequered history. Known for numerous suicides and gruesome deaths, there’s also rumours of a woman in blue haunting the area - and if her body is seen, someone will die. Before we know it, there’s strange dream attacks and exorcisms. It became hard to tell what was happening in what time frame, and exactly how things were unfolding. As long as you don’t like things neatly tied up, this might be the kind of story you’ll enjoy. Thanks to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this.
would like to thank netgalley and the publishers for letting me read this awesome book
oh man this was scary.... going into hotels is never going to be the same again.....
when two teenage girls are found murdered with their feet missing it became a case for maria and her partner who were affectionally known as mulder and scully for all the strange cases they were on
and this one was a doozy
with reports of anyone seeing the woman in blue and then them turning up dead didnt bode well for maria as she saw her and the next thing she knew she had the worst nightmare in her life and was then stabbed....
oh my word this book just dont read it at night before bed because you wont sleep after reading the ghostly goings on but it was also sad at the end to make me cry at one of the outcomes...
but hopefully there will be another book in this brilliant serie
This is book 3 in the Detective Maria Miller series. I have not read the previous 2 books. This one can be read as a standalone, but I feel I might have enjoyed it better if I had character background that would've been revealed in books 1 and 2. This book definitely kept my attention, and I was invested in what was going to happen in the end.
On the flip side, there was a lot going on. I went into this one blind, so I was a little caught off guard when dreams and supernatural things occurred. I found it hard to keep up with the timelines at certain points. The ending didn't provide the closure I was seeking. Maybe that's in preparation for a sequel.. Overall, I was loving the book until the paranormal aspects made it hard to suspend reality.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
✨𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐑𝐁: When the bodies of these best friends are discovered in a rundown New York City hotel room, Detective Maria Miller is summoned to the scene. Supposedly miles away at a sleepover, the girls' presence in the hotel, especially on the reputedly haunted thirteenth floor, raises chilling questions. Sinister messages on their phones suggest they were lured there. Despite no DNA evidence, Maria suspects a hotel insider is the killer. As she investigates, a link emerges to a decades-old double murder. With a key suspect found dead and eerie discoveries in the room, Maria races to uncover its secrets before becoming the next victim.
✨𝐌𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐈𝐓: Last month, I decided to take a break from reading ARCs. But as soon as the third installment of Detective Maria Miller was posted, I knew I had to sign up for it. I absolutely loved The House On West 10th Street, especially Her Lost Soul, which happens to be one of my top favorites. It’s just really, really good. I had been looking forward to this book.
✨ Anyway, The Girls On Floor 13 tells the story of multiple murders and suicides in a haunted hotel. It also features a mother who never stops waiting for her daughter to return, a friendship that's put to the test, deep grief, and a love that transcends death.
✨ It was creepy as hell. It was just terrifying; I had goosebumps all over. What drew me into Her Lost Soul was the abandoned asylum, but what scared me about The Girls On Floor 13 was the idea that the negative entity could possess and manipulate completely innocent people with no violent history. It could even invade your dreams and become your worst nightmare. The scenes weren’t as scary as I had expected, but the thought of it happening in real life totally creeped me out. As for the plot twist, I was a bit disappointed. Maybe I set my expectations too high.
✨ I also couldn't hold back the tears when one of my favorite characters died; it was just heartbreaking. Ughhh. I don’t want to spoil readers any further, but my heart aches so bad. I was also rooting for Maria and Frankie to finally get together in this series, but it seems like that ship has sailed. Harrison seems too good to be true for me, but I do think Maria deserves him since he'd been a really nice guy and genuinely cared for her. And I love that Frankie also found a new love interest. Overall, this has been an exhilarating, overwhelming, and enjoyable read for me. If you love horror, thrillers, and mysteries, you’ll surely enjoy this.
✨𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐈𝐅 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐋𝐈𝐊𝐄: 📌 TIME LOOP 📌 HAUNTED HOTEL 📌 WEALTH GAP ROMANCE 📌 CEO X DETECTIVE 📌 CRIME/MURDER 📌 SPINE-CHILLING CHAPTERS 📌 CHARACTERS WITH TRAUMATIC PASTS 📌 NO SPICE
This is the third book in the series. I have read the previous 2 and felt there was promise in the series.
This started off very interesting with the death of two teens at the Parker Hotel. I felt the set up of the mystery was good, and it caught my interest immediately. Maria and Frankie are heading up the investigation. I knew because of previous novels, that there would be a paranormal element. I don’t mind this in stories, but it has to be woven in through a way that draws the reader into a sense of belief of the possibility. The author manages, somewhat, to do this.
I was hoping that by the third book the writing would have progressed. The conversation in this was stilted. And the sudden shifts! Maria was talking to her boyfriend Harrison, then admits in her own head that she has cared for Frankie for quite a while. WHAT??? There was no segway to this thought. This happens a lot. The ending was a disappointment. I will not write a spoiler- but this changed over to a “horror” book, hiding as a murder investigation. However, the explanations for the murders don’t fit in the crime genre. And even then- it was a letdown and very dissatisfying.
There are some who really enjoyed this book, and if you like more paranormal than crime, then I think you will like this book. I guess for me, I like my paranormal separated from a crime!
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC. This is my voluntary, honest review.
(2 stars for the beginning because that did draw me in!)
Detective Maria Miller and partner Frankie are called to the Parker hotel where 2 teeanager girls are discovered dead, with their feet missing. Perplexed as this doesn’t seem a supernatural case, however, soo the Parker hotel reveals a nasty shadow that is our to get Maria. The hotels history relays years of strange encounters on the 13th floor and this isn’t the first murder either. Can these cases be linked? I really enjoy this series, slightly off the mainstream route, but provides a well written paranormal plot, with likeable main characters that have history together. I hope to see more books in the series.
I blazed through this book in no-time. Both because it was quite exciting, but also because it's short and fast-paced.
I felt like the author might have had a grand plan for Maria Miller and Frankie when the first book was conceived, but then the excitement died down somewhat in book 2. Book 3 wrapped up the series very quickly and slammed the door firmly shut on all thoughts of a continuation. Whatever seed I thought I felt growing in book 1, never came to fruition.
I'm still happy I listened to the series though. Good books. Good narrator. Overall OK entertainment. Not a series that will linger with me though.
The only reason why I requested this book was because I loved the name and I thought it was a thriller. Now it was a thriller but it was a ghost/horror book too and i'm just not a fan of those type genres. If you are then you would probably enjoy this read!
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC! This book was a spooky detective novel involving ghosts. Some parts of this were extremely unrealistic which made it harder for me to get into, but I still enjoyed the quick read and liked the characters, spirits included.
I thought the first 2 books in this fabulous series were creepy enough but this one gave me chills. Maria and Frankie take a call to a hotel where the bodies of 2 teenagers are found. What may be a normal homicide turns into a paranormal thriller when Maria gets an uneasy feeling about the hotel, she sees a woman in a blue dress but is told she's been dead for over 80 years and when anyone sees her it's a premonition of a death. Mysterious sightings and events leave Maria and Frankie debating their futures in their roles. I love the paranormal and ghostly aspects to this series, I hope its not the last in the series.
Well, wow what's not to love about a detective series with a sprinkle of supernatural added in. The characters of Maria and Frankie are described perfectly and make you wish you knew them personally. This book is part of a series but could be read as a standalone I think. Absolutely brilliant book.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #StormPublishing for the book #TheGirlsOnFloor13 by #HelenPhifer. I love the Frankie/Maria series and this book is amazing! I love the paranormal aspect in these stories. This one is about a haunted hotel and an evil demon in it that killing and cutting off women’s feet. I highly recommend this book/series and hopefully there will be more to this series.
Good read - this book is a ghostly, mystery thriller with a great plot and some added humor. Loved the main characters which were a pair of detectives, Frankie and Maria. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and enjoyed the paranormal setting. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Detective Maria Miller is back investigating 2 dead girls have been found on the 13th floor of a creepy New York hotel with a past of haunting events. Maria senses something isn't right when she sees a ghostly figure and with an identical murder from 40 years previous is this a copy cat or something far more sinister.
This was a good enjoyable quick thriller read. This book had a creepy atmosphere and some great twists. I have had a great time with this series.
Thank you to Netgalley, Storm Publishing and Helen Phifer for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
"The Girls on Floor 13" by Helen Phifer is a gripping and atmospheric thriller that keeps readers engaged with its dark and suspenseful narrative. While the book has many strengths, there are also a few elements that prevent it from reaching its full potential, resulting in a solid 4-star rating.
One of the standout features of this novel is Phifer's ability to create an eerie and unsettling atmosphere. From the very first page, the setting of the old, dilapidated hotel where Floor 13 is located is vividly described, drawing readers into a world filled with mystery and dread. Phifer excels at building tension and maintaining a sense of foreboding throughout the story.
The protagonist, Detective Maria Miller, is a well-developed character with a strong presence. Her determination and resourcefulness make her a compelling lead, and her personal struggles add depth to her character. Phifer does a commendable job of balancing Maria's professional challenges with her personal life, making her relatable and human.
The plot of "The Girls on Floor 13" is intriguing and full of twists. The mystery surrounding the disappearances of several girls is skillfully unraveled, keeping readers guessing until the end. Phifer's pacing is generally good, with enough action and suspense to maintain interest. However, there are moments where the story feels a bit slow, and some scenes could have been tightened to improve the overall flow.
One area where the book falls short is in the development of secondary characters. While Maria is well fleshed out, other characters, including some of the victims, feel somewhat one-dimensional. This lack of depth makes it harder to connect with them and lessens the emotional impact of their stories.
Additionally, the resolution of the mystery, while satisfying in some respects, feels a bit rushed. The final revelations come quickly, and certain plot points could have been explored more thoroughly to provide a more comprehensive conclusion. Despite these issues, the ending does tie up the main storyline and leaves room for future installments in the series.
Phifer's writing style is engaging and descriptive, making it easy to visualize the scenes and characters. Her attention to detail in the setting and atmosphere adds to the overall immersive experience. The dialogue is generally well-written, though there are instances where it feels a bit forced or unnatural.
In conclusion, "The Girls on Floor 13" is a compelling thriller with a strong lead character and an atmospheric setting. Helen Phifer's talent for creating suspense and tension is evident throughout the book. While there are areas that could be improved, such as the development of secondary characters and pacing, the novel remains an enjoyable and gripping read. Fans of dark, suspenseful mysteries will find much to appreciate in "The Girls on Floor 13." My thoughts are mine and mine alone. *Sidenote: This was read out of order, and reading the first two of the series could change my review rating; I will go back and read Detective Maria Miller #1 and Detective Maria Miller #2.
Thank you NetGalley and Helen Phifer for the ARC read.
The Girls on Floor 13 is book #3 of Helen Phifer’s Detective Maria Miller series. The series follows Maria's cases that she's assigned as part of the Strange Case Review team for the NYPD. In this installment, the bodies of two teenage girls are discovered in a hotel room on the 13th floor of The Parker Hotel in New York City. Maria and her partner, Frankie, are called to the scene. They discover that an identical double murder has happened in the same hotel room decades before. They investigate to see if they're linked and end up running into some creepy paranormal activity along the way. I immediately was intrigued from the prologue. Two teen girls in Boston decide to sneak out and take a bus to NY to stay in a haunted hotel? Sign me up! But... as the story progressed, I found myself enjoying it less and less. To be fair, I haven't read the first two books in this series, which maybe would have made me enjoy it more, but I really didn't feel like I needed to read them to be able to understand what was going on at all. This can definitely be read as a standalone and things from the first 2 books are mentioned throughout the book to give some back story. There were parts of the book that I liked. I liked the creepy story of the hotel's past and the nod to Elisa Lam and the Cecil Hotel. I thought that the killer's MO was really weird, but in a good way! There were, however, several parts of the book that fell short for me. A lot of the dialogue felt unnecessary, like it was just added as a filler to take up space. Some of the dialogue also surprised me, like I wasn't expecting the character to say what they did. The dialogue between Maria and her boyfriend Harrison was cringy and kind of made me feel like he was giving off serial killer vibes. Covid was also mentioned several times in this book, and for me personally, I do not want Covid mentioned in any of my entertainment!! I'm over it!!! I found myself kind of bored at times. Some of the characters felt unnecessary. The different POVs were a little confusing at times too. Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
The Girls on Floor 13 is the third book in Phifer's Detective Maria Miller series. While all could potentially be read in any order - it is recommended that you start with The Haunting on West 10th Street. During this book, we not only have our paranormal investigation (with spooky links to previous hauntings), but we also get a little more of a glimpse into Maria's private life. One of my favourite parts of this series is the amazing banter between both Maria and Frankie and their perfect impression of Mulder and Scully! This one definitely felt inspired by other hotel murders, so if you're a fan of true crime and ghostly sightings and disappearances this one is a must to add to your list.
Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing and Helen Phifer for an advanced copy for review. The Girls on Floor 13 is set for release May 30th, 2024.
This book is centered around the investigation of the murder of two girls on the thirteenth floor of a haunted hotel. Detective Maria Miller is the lead investigator in this case, and is working together with Detective Frankie. While they are at the hotel, Detective Maria sees and learns about a lady dressed in blue. It is stated that the lady dressed in blue is a bad omen, and people who see her often will either end up dead, or someone else will die.
I enjoyed this book and the pace of the story. It wasn't too overwhelming or underwhelming at all. I originally wasn't sure if I liked the paranormal aspect of this story since I wasn't expecting it (since this book is only labeled as a thriller book on Goodreads and the only mentions of the possibility of it being a paranormal thriller is the mention of hauntings in the synopsis), but it grew on me and added an extra layer to the story, and made it more interesting.
The only complaint that I have is the constant obsession with feet from the point of view of the killer...... just not my thing and feet gross me out.
Thank you to Helen Phifer and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
I received an ARC copy of this book through NetGalley and Storm Publishing; a huge thank you to them and Helen for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I am a huge Helen Phifer fan, and have devoured the detective Morgan series. I was so excited to have the opportunity to read and review The Girls on Floor 13. I didn’t realize this is also part of a series, so I read this without reading the first two. It’s strong enough to stand on its own, and I feel like I wasn’t missing any key plot points by skipping to the third installment. I do plan to double back and read the first two though now that I’ve gotten through this one.
Detective Maria Miller is part of a special task force who deals with supernatural elements to homicide cases. It’s up to Maria to figure out what has been killing ladies of the night and more recently two teenage girls in an old hotel in NYC. As always, the characters and plot development were phenomenal and gripping. I can’t speak highly enough of Phifer and her law enforcement murder mysteries, they are always fun and fast paced.
Crime. Murder. Drama. Ghosts. This story has it all. When two girls are murdered in the Parker Hotel, on the 13th floor, detectives Maria and Frankie are brought in. They seem to find themselves on a not so normal case. Again.
What could be better than hauntings and murder? This book was a surprise to me. It was a part of a series, and yet, as a stand-alone, it was so good. It DID make me want to go read the others sooner rather than later. I never felt like I missed anything major. It just made me want more information. I loved the characters and the storyline. It was spooky and well written, and I can't wait to find more from this author.
*I want to thank Netgalley and the author for this book in return for my honest review*
This is a police procedural, murder mystery book with paranormal elements. The bodies of 2 teenagers are discovered in a rundown hotel which is popular for multiple deaths, murders and tragedies, and is rumoured to be haunted.
Detectives Marie and Frankie are investigating the case and have a history of prior supernatural cases. They believe the murderer works at the hotel but have no leads or evidence pointing at anyone.
This book is the third instalment in the Detective Miller series, but can be read as a standalone. However, there were references to the previous books which had me lost.
Overall, it was an interesting read with lots of surprises. Some parts were so creepy and gave me goosebumps. The book kept me guessing if it was a supernatural entity or just a crazy murderer.
This book will have you racing through the pages and sleeping with the lights on. I would recommend this book if you like a crime fiction with a paranormal twist.
Thank you so much Helen Phifer, Storm Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC copy!
Fast paced, easy read. Very spooky. We get povs from the killer, which is well done and creepy to read. But pretty predictable ending.
Available now on KU. Maria Miller is a cop on the “strange case review team” which basically means she works paranormal cases. This is book 3 in the series, but it can be read alone. Two teen girls are found dead in a haunted hotel, missing their feet. Theres ghosts so don’t go into this book expecting a standard crime thriller.
Definitely interested in reading the rest of the series now.
Side note: girl, take the offer from your rich boyfriend to buy you a bookstore cafe!! And tell him you love him!! What are you doing??
Thanks to netgalley, Helen Phifer, and Storm Publishing for the arc!
