Warhammer: Age of Sigmar 3rd Edition

Battletome: Flesh Eater Courts

Rate this book
The creatures of the Flesh-eater Courts are touched by a curse that distorts their very perception of reality. While they believe themselves to be valiant knights and honest soldiers, they are in truth wretched fiends who hunger for the flesh of their enemies. In the ruins of war-toppled civilisations, ghoulish beings lurk on the border between life and death. Ruled by bestial vampires, these mordants are trapped in an arcane delusion; they see their foul lairs as majestic castles, and themselves as pious warriors. With the return of their beloved Carrion King, Ushoran, they have launched a crusade that sees their contagious insanity spread across the realms like never before.

Battletome: Flesh-eater Courts is the comprehensive guide to collecting and fielding the cannibalistic monstrosities of the Flesh-eater Courts. It's a feast of grisly background information, ghoulish artwork, and all the rules you’ll need to use the Flesh-eater Courts in your games of Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

Inside this 88-page hardback book you'll find:
– In-depth background on the Flesh-eater Courts, including the grim legend of their master, Ushoran
– Unsettling artwork that illustrates the depths of the ghoulish delusion, and the bloody truth behind the madness
– 27 warscrolls and pitched battle profiles for the Flesh-eater Courts, from shrieking Morbheg Knights to Ushoran himself

With the return of Ushoran, the Mortarch of Delusion, his third edition Battletome for the Flesh-eater Courts fleshes out the faction’s lore a bit more than previously, especially for the Era of the Beast. Much of the lore section is focused on Ushoran himself, telling the story of his time as Nagash’s champion, his betrayal, descent into mad and return, with some sections told from an in-universe delusional perspective that is quite entertaining. As Well as the Mortarch, there is lore on various lands controlled by the Flesh-eater Courts, info on the four largest Grand Court sub-factions, and a bestiary section. While very interesting and entertaining to read, the Grand Court and bestiary sections do cut down and streamline the lore from previous editions.

I, unfortunately, found the gallery/showcase section of the book was a little disappointing as, while some focus on the new units and models is understandable, I feel that they should have shown more of the older models and alternative colour schemes. The painting guide section, however, was as useful as always, with a number of different flesh tones that could be used.

The rules section of the book is as good as the other Battletomes in this edition, including the usual Open, Matched and Path to Glory Narrative rules. The addition of the Noble Deeds rule to the faction’s Battle Traits is cool, streamlining many of the various summoning abilities of the characters into a single rule that can also be used to boost Attacks. The faction specific Path to Glory rules for the Flesh-eater Courts are quite interesting, allowing players to enhance their Heroes, Noble Deeds in-game, and recruit new troops from the opponent’s territory.

I've always loved the Warhammer Army Books, Codex, and now Battletomes. Pretty sure this convinced me to make a FEC army next.
