Share the true meaning of Easter with The Action Bible Easter Story. --Sergio Cariello was born in Brazil in 1964 and started drawing as soon as could hold a pencil. At the age of five, he already knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist. And so did everyone else--he drew on church bulletins, napkins, and every surface wtihin his reach. He currently resides in Holiday, Florida.Sergio has worked for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. He attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art as well as the Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York.In February, 2006, he was contacted by David C. Cook to gauge his interest in a new project; completely re-illustrating Cook's classic Picture Bible. What David C. Cook couldn't know is that Sergio had grown up in Brazil with a Portuguese translation of that very same Picture Bible. He was reading the Picture Bible before he learned to ride a bike! Even though he knew as a kid that he wanted to be a comic artist, he never would have dreamed that he would one day get to work on the Picture Bible itself!
Summary: The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus in comic book fashion.
Why I Read This: Elevator to Heaven, and it was mentioned by Fr. Mike Schmitz as his first Bible.
Review: I appreciate this book. I won't say that it's my favorite retelling of the Bible, but it's solid and engaging. It would be appropriate for a middle schooler, maybe, but I use the label "teen" lightly. I would have expected more Scriptural quotations (and a better translation) for some parts. Still, I do appreciate that the author includes the Gospel chapters where the particular part of the story that is portrayed is from. Overall, a solid effort.
I didn't love how this switched perspectives each chapter, I think it's confusing if you're not familiar with the story. My kids are learning about Easter now and they are a little young (6 and 9) for this without more context.
This is a wonderful way to bring the stories of the Bible to life for people who may not encounter them or engage with them in print. The reason for only a 3 star review is the novel's theological interpretation of the Last Supper. The author interprets this as only a meal of remembrance for Jesus's followers, ignoring the abundant apostolic witness (and Jesus Himself) that this meal is also--and primarily-- centered in the Living Christ who gives his gracious love and forgiveness through the tangible elements of bread and wine. His very body and blood are given in, with and under the bread and wine shared by believers, uniting them with Him and with each other in the new life Christ continues to bring throughout the world. The creators of this novel are nevertheless to be commended for some very important work in trailblazing this new avenue of telling the old, old story of Jesus in a fresh new way.
The Action Bible Easter Story presents the narrative of Christ’s death and resurrection in the form of a comic book, perfect for parents and children to share before Easter. The visuals are bright and fun, giving exactly what the title promises. And the action hero, Jesus, follows the well-known Biblical path, with genuine action, fine modern dialog, and appropriate pain. Making the Bible relevant to kids can be hard, and this book does it well.
Disclosure: I was lucky enough to find this when it was free.
Really nice graphic novel depicting the Easter story as told from the New Testament. The art is well drawn and action packed. Found this as a free download on www.dccebooks.com and will continue to watch for additional books in this series.
I think I may have read the action bible before or something similar. But I really enjoyed this book. I think this book provided the Easter story in comic form well and kids will really enjoy this book. Recommended and something to read again.
Unfortunately it follows some unbiblical interpretations [Friday crucifixion, Jesus praying to get out of the cross] which are easily corrected by the Bible but for the most part it is a good retelling of the Passion of the Lord.
This would be a fun way for children to read the Bible. The author wrote it in today's language and included graphic novel-type illustrations. He took information from various books of the Bible to write it.
I thought the book would be longer and more detailed but it was a nice 5 minute short story. I would like to see more of the bible in this form if possible.
A wonderful quick read broken into small chapters. Good for any child that is being introduced to the life of Jesus. I even recommend it for adults. A quick read. Less than 10 minutes.
