The death of a continental superpower shakes the world...
With the fall of Alvin the Unconquerable, the face of the Fourliance changes drastically. New alliances are made as the Factions prepare for war, and all while the Necro-Beast Faction keeps pushing for more territory.
Keith, meanwhile, has other concerns. Mainly with the discovery of the next World Monster's location, and the formation of his Guild in the Fourliance. With powerful new allies backing him, things should be running smoothly, but when a raid goes south, he finds himself facing a powerful enemy he cannot hope to defeat.
Given an ultimatum, Keith has to hurry and complete a series of quests that will lead to a weapon to even the playing field. He doesn't like being threatened, and his enemies are about to find that out the hard way.
We Hunt Monsters is a LitRPG series set in a fantasy world. This book contains multiple stat sheets, item descriptions, epic quests and of course, loads of monsters.
This is a reasonably entertaining series, but I'm starting to actively dislike the main character a lot. I get why he acts the way he does in terms of rudeness, abruptness, "everything for the mission," etc. And why he doesn't want to form any attachments to people. He has a valid reason for all of that in the world in which the story takes place.
That doesn't mean it is fun to read. He's a dick, and he uses people with very little regard for their feelings. You would think that someone with as much interpersonal experience as he has would know that being nice to people is often more effective than being a jerk, but apparently the author has chosen to make him ignore all of that experience and sprint for the finish line of his "quest" despite having spent so long on it already.
Speaking of that, if you've read to this point none of this will be spoilers, but the being is literally named The Trickster. You just know the ending isn't going to be a happy one. Either all of that time he has been alive will have elapsed and his family is long dead, or something else will bamboozle him. Assuming that no actual time elapses, why is he in such a rush now? I get being frustrated at spending like 400 years apart, but what are a few more at this point? Same with his refusal to get into any sort of relationship. I get how having to watch people grow old and die time after time is probably horrible, but he's turned into an unfeeling asshole because of it, and his family isn't going to recognize him if they ever are actually reunited.
I don't know man, I'm getting really tired of reading characters that are difficult to sympathize with. Would it have killed him to form relationships with people? I really liked Alicia, and pushed ahead to the books where she'd be in them...but no, she's barely there and he treated her like shit when she was. Again, I see that he has valid reasons that he gives in the books, but they absolutely suck to deal with as a reader. It feels like I'm being dragged down into being miserable along with him. Hell, his companions ALL tell him what a jerk he is, and maybe he eases up for 3 minutes, but then right back to being a jerk. I'll keep reading, but I am starting to hope The Trickster really screws him at the end just because he's clearly not learned how to be a better person.
I wonder if the author realizes that many of us only keep reading for the side characters and events, and if Keith were to die and somehow the story kept going on, we'd probably be happier?
Oh, and the maniac driving thing...ugh. I hate every moment of it, and it is beyond stupid. It is too late to end it without feeling weird, but come on. It is just as dumb as his other philosophies on life, that no matter how much anyone gives him advice on, he ignores. He's the dumbest 400 year old person ever, and I am starting to actively hate him. Please stop, and lighten him up just a little.
The MC seems to be getting more and more cold-blooded, and not in a good way either. I honestly found it to be a bit incongruent to the previous books. In the first few books, it felt like the MC was (at least nominally) sympathetic to the plights of the commoners, and (somewhat) tried to preserve the lives of his guildmates raid team members, but in this book, and the previous, he doesn’t seem to care anymore. Maybe it’s just my tolerance for his behaviors starting to run out. I don’t know… In the first few books I felt like his actions can be seen as pragmatic if a bit calculative, especially towards the rich and powerful, which I can kind of get behind. Eat the rich, or whatever. In the last few books, he seems more and more cold-blooded and uncaring, which makes him very hard to like. And it seems like this isn’t going to get better in anyway. If there are other important characters calling out his actions, or if he suffers some kind of consequence, then I can see this as part of his character arc, and he is just getting worse before he will eventually get better and start to care about the people and world around him. But there is little indication that that’s going to happen… All in all, I don’t know if I’ll keep reading this series, since I can’t sympathize with the MC anymore…
Sorry of world monster conquest, he doesn’t want to be in charge of anything but himself. But he wants people he trusts in control too so he gets his way… Keith works to find information on his next world monster quest as he builds a new guild here to help him take down the world monster, however things don’t go according to plans as usual and a few side quests happen! But it’s all worth it as he gets upgrades and is ambushed by … well a lot of people honestly, and he’s a Sage.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
After 7 other books you know what the deal is. Keith continues to be a generally unpleasant dude to those around him, women love him on sight, and he is going to get into unwanted fights. That said I still enjoyed the book simply because he doesn’t do things that are really dumb and he has some interesting stuff going on that makes me want to keep going.
The book was amazing!! I enjoyed reading the book and the development of the story. The characters are fun to read about and their development is interesting. Can’t wait to see what happens next!!
Books 1 through 8 have been wonderful. Very much worth reading. Can't wait for number 9 to come out here this month. The author has a wonderful imagination and the books feel like you're there
Just a blast of fun and enjoyment reading this series. Keith’s tenacity to push forward and not be attached but still looking out for others makes it a great read. Come on Book 9
Good book good progression good item system good tier system, but definitely weird how he's almost level 70 and still getting the base five points (before title/class benefits)
This author has crafted an amazing world, with an MC that continues to shine, world building that is top notch and just great storytelling from the start to the finish! Keep up the great work!
