I absolutely devoured this!!
Was it heartbreaking? Soul wrenching? F*cking yeah, but I loved every second of it.

We follow the events that ended book 1 and Mariah being taken and later slowly coping and recovering from the things that happened to her. Tay is so good at portraying emotions and trauma that I felt it, and I liked the way she wrote that love was Mariah’s weakness but now she’ll have to make it her retribution.

We have great character growth happening in this book and the secondary characters are each given their own shine, especially Sebastian, Ciana, Quentin and Delaynie.
This was more of a character focused book but the plot was not neglected nonetheless, and I’m truly curious of where it would lead in the next installments.

Mariah is slowly learning to trust again and she learns more about her powers and their source, the Godesses.

And most importantly, WE FINALLY LEARN WHAT NIO MEANS!!!! And it’s 🤯💖🤩 ( nope, I won’t reveal it, you’ll have to read the book to find out)

This was fabulous and utterly devastating and I’m so pumped for the rest of the series!

Thank you so much Tay for giving me an ARC of this for me to review!

♾️/5 ⭐️ Hands down my FAVORITE fantasy book I’ve read this year. This deserves all the stars and LET ME TELL YOU! These characters?! Will stay with you forever. The love I have for them. 😭😭😭😭😭

This book was about retribution, trust, love, found family, and regaining strength after it’s been lost. Mariah’s strength was BEAUTIFUL throughout this whole dang book. The first part was hard to read but watching her character grow and learn how to become whole again was incredible.

I honestly cannot contain all my emotions and feelings since I just finished the book and this is totally chaotic BUT YOU NEED THIS SERIES IN YOUR LIFE! You need these characters and found family and BA magic!!!!!! The plot twist also got me GOOD! I was not ready for them.

Anyway… this is book 2 and yes, you have to read book 1 so go binge is on KU real quick before Scourge comes out on September 18th!

Holy shit, I’m so excited to share this review with you guys!

*minor spoilers, ARC review*

Scourged is book 2 in the Solstice Cycle, following after Threaded. I read Threaded last October as a book club pick and absolutely ate it up! I was so happy when I got approved for an ARC for Scourged, especially after the cliffhanger ending in book 1.

What isn’t to love about this book? There’s multiple POVs, found family, shadow daddy Andrian, and it picks up right where Threaded left off. Not to mention, YOU FINALLY LEARN WHAT NIO MEANS (iykyk)!!! I was NOT prepared for another cliffhanger ending but it all flowed so well, I didn’t even mind it as much.

Granted, you are a bit traumatized both from the ending of Threaded and Chapter One of Scourged but it’s so good. There’s angst for days, spice, tension, and it’s all so captivating. I loved every second of this book, what with its 3 part story. I’m so glad that I reread Threaded before reading Scourged. Thank you @tayrosebooks for sending me an ARC copy!

🌶️: 3.5

Scourged comes out on September 18, 2024 and you can find Threaded today on Kindle Unlimited!

This is a 600 page book and I finished in TWO DAYS. Literally could not put it down. The cliffhanger at the end of Threaded tore me apart emotionally and I was SO GRATEFUL I could continue right away.

Bad news, the first third of this book is pure torture, emotionally and physically. But once you’re through, Mariah’s journey is a paragon of emotional writing - and it’s clear she has even more challenges and growth ahead of her. From the fiery commoner queen, to being brutally tested, to pulling herself together from the ground up and overcoming fears…Mariah is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite FMCs.

I also loved how she and Andrian found their way back to each other after the truly traumatic opening of this book. Talk about growth between these two characters, holy moly. These two are so imperfect, but perfect together.

As with any good fantasy series, the world begins to expand in this book. More gods and goddesses, meeting characters beyond Onita…And we spend more time in other POVs like Sebastian and Ciana, who all have their own emotional journeys.

While it’s fairly common for fantasy series to tackle themes of female oppression and rage, The Solstice Cycle leans HEAVILY into this. I dare you not to be enraged and inspired to burn it all down even in your living room (again Rose’s writing is just so evocative!) And we’re only on the second book.

Another highly dramatic, gutting ending, just in a different way. Whew the gang has their work cut out for them. Rose is really rude for these! Again, is this a little long? Yes. But am I extremely hooked? Also yes.

Mind blown! Full review to come when I can piece my mind and heart back together. You must read this series!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We pick up immediately after the end of Threaded as everyone is grappling with the events that shook them all. I knew I was in for quite the emotional journey in Scourged and Tay delivered on this and so much more! This story is filled with so much trauma, healing, and discovery and I could not put it down.
Mariah is a force to be reckoned with as she let her feminine rage take center stage. Survival is the name of the game and she will not be denied the retribution and vengence she seeks. But underneath all that rage is hurt, grief, betrayal and fear. So much fear. But in true Mariah fashion, she doesn’t let that fear hold her back from everything she needs to accomplish.
I love the deep dive we get with her armature as we learn more about each of them and how their pasts shape their relationships with Mariah and each other. And I totally related to Sebastian and the weight of his perceived failures sitting heavy on his shoulders.
And my sweet baby Andrian. The way my heart broke for him over and over again! The hurt, the want, the fear, the need…. those hands!
Once again we’re left with a gut punch of an ending- one I’m still not over yet! But there is also so much hope, love, and growth between Andrian and Mariah and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
Repetitive, Drawn Out
Another tentative 3 🌟
I gave more grace to book 1, and I'm unwilling to extend the same grace to book 2.
It feels like there was a disconnect between part 1 and part 2. And part 3 is just...
While I understand the pace of the book and events would slow down after the trauma and heaviness that was part 1. They slowed down to a snail's pace and the events that happened felt almost unnecessary. And even when they seemed important, nothing came out of it.
I dunno if the characters realised the dangers that were lurking around. Their actions felt almost lackadaisical. Lack of urgency and effort. It was like everybody was operating on one shared minuscule brain cell.
It felt like they were just waiting for danger to come and claim them.
And do not get me wrong, part 2 was necessary to the book, after part 1, everything needed to slow down, it just went on for too damn long. There's simply no reason for it to have the most chapters when practically nothing happened.
Mariah cared too damn much about how she made everybody feel and not enough about herself, in particular Andrian and Sebastian.
I was like, "Babes, you are the one who went through the most traumatising events. Who tf cares about hurt feelings"
Still not sold on Andrian, and he can crawl a thousand times and I still wouldn't buy into him being deserving of Mariah.
I don't buy their love story either!
Not enough of the side characters
Everything just felt too damn repetitive and drawn out.
I don't say this often about books and authors.
But I hate when authors have planned out their books but are unwilling to modify it to suit the story they are telling and the characters they have built. I prefer it when a story flows and is accommodating instead of being mechanical and rigid.
And like I said about the first book, the plot is there, I can see where the author wants to go and what the outcome should be. But the execution is just not there!
About the last few chapters, I feel like I was being punked.
The events of the last few chapters should have been slowly revealed throughout several chapters. Chapters that were wasted in part 2.
It simply makes zero sense and reason for us to be overloaded with several pieces of relevant information at the very last minute.
I am reluctant to give this book 2 🌟, I don't think it deserves it but 3 is also generous.
At this moment, I can't say that I will be continuing the series
P.s; I decided on 2 🌟 after 3 months
“Those who burn the brightest, fall the hardest.”
The Solstice Cycle books gave me a refreshing twist on my favorite tropes. I loved seeing Mariah rise to be queen and the strength and struggle for power with her court. Andrian’s darkness and broken heart was written so well. Both books took me on an emotional ride with the cliffhangers for both. I seriously can’t wait for book 3.
In the follow-up to Threaded, let’s just say that Mariah and her allies must overcome
A LOT. While the threat of an ominous and ancient evil awakens, the promise of change whispers on the horizon and with it, a semblance of hope.
𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.
Seeds of hatred, bigotry, and discord are sown deep but Mariah is determined to incite meaningful change, unless she meets her doom first…
Scourged completely unraveled me in the best way possible. Tay artfully navigates a multi-POV narrative exploring fear, feminine rage, love, and retribution.
In this installment, we expand our understanding of Mariah’s Armature and most trusted allies. The deep bonds formed transcend mere duty and I am so invested in each of them!
The relationship between Mariah and the MMC is one that is incredibly nuanced, soul-stirring, and passionate.
I would be remiss if I failed to mention that this book features the most heart shattering “who did this” and groveling scene I’ve ever read 😭
In Scourged, Tay crafts an emotionally-charged and visceral story of anguish, healing, and hope. This is a series I can’t stop thinking about and am counting down the days until the next book!
So grateful to Tay for the ARC opportunity (and for entertaining my panicked DMs)! This is my honest and voluntary review
*ARC REVIEW* (a really fucking late one because life had other plans for me the last couple of months. I’m so sorry Tay)
So, I remember after finishing Threaded thinking to myself “gods that might be the worst cliffhanger I’ve ever experienced.”
And oh sweet summer child..
That was nothing, compared to Scourged.
Nothing.
I’m sobbing.
Crying throwing up screaming so UPSET and yet so utterly in love with this series.
I need book 3 like 5 minutes ago but Shattered isn’t due until 2026, so for the next two(+???) years I’ll be doing absolutely nothing except for rereading these two books at least once a month and convincing myself that somehow everything will be okay.
Tay, you’re a treasure. I’m utterly grateful for not only your imagination and devotion to sharing your creations with the world, but for allowing me the chance to bear witness to it.
I’m off to cry myself to sleep now while wishing I could give Mariah a hug. 🖤
I received this book as an ARC and have been patiently waiting for it to come out. I received threaded in a book box for probably smut.
I love the strength that these female characters have, well sometimes I think the men are just complete idiots, I also have a love for those characters. I really enjoyed the end, so much happened some I expected some I didn’t. The world I just so artfully done, the detail down to the clothes is perfect!
*spoilers*
The DRAGONS. Enough said. And the Daddy issues set up for next book???
Any way I will be thinking about these books while I impatiently wait for 2026.
…is this my fav fantasy of the year?? Could not put this book down!! The romance is perfect. The squad is lowkey giving TOG vibes. Like I love the side characters as much as the main character. The fantasy! The redemption! THE plot twist! Two more books to come and this series has the potential to be one of the best I’ve read in awhile
The pace of book two was ON POINT!!!!!
Immediately opens up where it left off and my oh my. What a wild ride this was. I don’t think I have highlighted a book so much in my life. So many little details and Easter eggs that lead to that EPIC ending of a cliffhanger.
I have such rage after the last couple chapters. Good rage. Rage for Mariah.
I will NOT go into anymore detail for the sake of spoilers, but future readers… buckle the fuck up.
Thank you Tay for the ARC! I love you and the discord fam!
You 100% need to read Threaded first, so if you haven’t hop onto KU and binge that baby! This book definitely feels like a bridge book (there will be 4 total!), where the relationship takes a big priority, but don’t worry you still get a ton of story! Get ready to have your heart crushed - again - fall back in love, dive into more magic, and finally get your dragon 🐉 this was my favorite and was screaming at Tay about this part lol.
Serious the groveling from Andrian, the truth about what happened to the magic (THIS PART IS SOO GOOD), the FORESHADOW about the dragon, this book still has so much and I was dying to get to it all. Then the end threw in a twist (no spoilers here!!) and honestly I’m excited for this villain that had come to play.
Also Ksee is a bitch. I stand by it.
Get ready for another cliffhanger, but don’t worry it’s not as bad as the first one! And honestly it has me excited for the next part of the story with the gods 🤍
SPOILER-FREE ARC REVIEW - 4.25 ⭐️
I have had the pleasure of reading this as an Advanced Reader (Thank you Queen Tay!) and ohhhh let me tell you … pick👏🏻this👏🏻book👏🏻up👏🏻
The sequel to Threaded, I have to say I preferred this book. Relationships are explored deeper, there are multiple romance arcs, and Ms Rose does a fanTASTIC job of making me care about 7 men and 5 women i’ve never met, at once.
There is some rather heavy content in the first third of this book - traumatic, descriptive content - so if you have any triggers, I would recommend reading the Content Warnings first.
I went into this book with heavy LFG energy, I cried from the dedication, and by the end of this book I was not only not disappointed, but I was squealing and jumping up and down in my seat and I need the next one Nooowwwww!
I think Mariah could be a little annoyingly stubborn, and quite hard-headed at times, but I’m hoping this is the start of a character development arc rather than an overlooked aspect of the character. Other than that, No Notes 📝
Tay Rose is a poet and I’d like her to write the book of my life, because if it is by her, it will be beautiful.
If you enjoyed the first, you’ll love this book. And if you didn’t enjoy the first … try again ☺️💛🩶
Spoiler Free!
We pick up right where we left off in Book 1, and Tay Rose never eased off the gas. Despite the whopping 74 chapters, every line was intentional and progressed us forward. We get to know the Armature so much more and continue to see Mariah’s strength.
Tay Rose continues to include themes of female empowerment, politics, patriarchy, power, and more with poetic and memorable language. You will laugh, cry, and scream throughout this book, and finish wanting more without feeling like you were left high and dry.
This book definitely did not fall prey to the curse of a sequel not living up to its predecessor.
*Picks up Threaded (Book 1) again because I can’t let this world go* Thank you for letting me be an ARC reader!
Stick a fork in me because surely I am done. This book was SO freaking good. The level of angst and agony is insane. Like, I am not sure how I could love this story as much as I did when I was stressed and/or depressed for at least 75% of it. This was Game of Thrones level of knowing happy times just meant the real shit was about to go down…and yet I couldn’t stop.
The different characters and relationships in Scourged were so enticing. The hints at what could be and the building of existing bonds were great. There were times we squeaked right up to the line of being a “miscommunication” trope, but we never fully got there (thank goodness). And OH THE REVEALS. There were some great ones, and they just. kept. coming. AH-MAZING! 🙌🏻 I don’t know how I will survive until book 3 because I sure am ready for it.
Tay has done it again. Going to need a few days to even process what I have just read. This series has not stopped amazing me at every twist. The world building is vibrant and complex. The depth of history and how things all tie together is so well thought out. I love Mariah, the FMC; she is fierce and strong. I really appreciated the time spent on helping the characters process and heal the events of this story (something that isn’t always acknowledged in fantasy). Also shadow daddy Andrian . . . perfection.
Highlights:
✨Fierce, Strong, Stabby FMC
✨Shadow Daddy MMC
✨Meddling Gods
✨Feminine Rage & Forgiveness
✨Soul Bonded Warriors
✨Found Family
This book started right after the first one ended! The secomd book follows the theme of trauma, healing and self-discovery.
Mariah is held in a dungeon being forced to give up her power.
The mystery of dark power along with spooky manir vibes make it for a intriguing premises. But Mariah comes back stronger. She fights her trauma and doesn't give up. We get to discover more of Mariah's magic and the back story of gods.
The magic system in this book is unique and the ending was executed flawlessly. I was flipping the pages and read at top speed because I couldn't wait to see what happens. I hope we don't have to wait long for the next book because I want can't wait what Mariah will do to get back her amature.
Im so angry that i sat through this book. I honestly don’t like DNFing but brother what the fuck is wrong with this FMC? Im supposed to believe shes powerful and strong when shes constantly melting over the man who literally whipped her and sat there as men sexually harassed her? I don’t really care if “He’s as trapped as she was” because no? Tf? Like you’d still hate the face of the man who dealt you so much pain and betrayed you or at least take more than 10 mins to get over all he’s done. Im sorry that’s so unrealistic and makes it hard to keep thinking of her as strong and not stupid.
Also, with ladies in waiting, it took you over 2 months before you decided to be useful in any way shape or form? You’re joking?
Anyway, so mad and i hate both the main characters, I’ve read a-lot of books that i didn’t, like but have never been so annoyed that i wrote a review.
He’s a piece of shit and not in a lovable way, and shes plain stupid not only with her love life but with every decisions shes made thus far. I hate it here.
Wow. And here I was thinking the first book was gonna be hard to beat. This book just shook me to my core. I am absolutely broken by the end. I need 3-5 business days to collect my thoughts and put them back together.
Also the way we aren’t expected to get a third book until 2026?! I truly am unsure about my ability to wait that long.
This is book two in the solstice cycle 4 book series.
Fair warning this book is heavy topics, pay mind to trigger warnings and read with full knowledge.
Tay has crafted a beautiful intricate and fun world in threaded and scourged allowed us to immerse ourselves in the main and side characters wants/needs/motivations that have us feeling everything they are feeling through the book!
The plot is building and becoming more layered with many different threads. I can’t wait to see what the finished storyline looks like-after reading book 2 I know it will be an amazing ride.
So many new magical elements to explore in this book that the world really explodes off the page! Enjoy! Thanks for the ARC. I’m eager for the next book already!
ARC Review
This was absolutely a page turner for me. Part 1 and 2 were pretty medium paced but after I got to part 3 there was no putting it down. The story kept me engaged and interested the whole time! There were sad moments, happy moments, funny moments and everything in between. It was an emotional roller coaster.
Much of this book is very emotional and character driven. After the events of book 1, where our main character, Mariah, was feeling confident in her role and her plan, everything came tumbling down. We get to see her and her friends have to learn to build themselves back up and reforge relationships after being broken. We see a variety of POVs here, including some that were not in Threaded. It was not too many to track, but enough you get to see things from different perspectives. I love how the author handles the inner voice of each character.
Finishing this really made me want to go back and reread Threaded again. I believe the author dropped a number of hints and foreshadowed some of the events in Scourged and I love when a book gains even more interest with a new perspective.
If you like:
- Meddling gods/goddesses
- Magic
- Feminine rage
- Multi POV
- Healing
- Found family
Scourged (and The Solstice Cycle) are for you.
