Following the death of the country’s only heir, eighteen-year-old Corinn Januski is invited to fight for a crown she doesn’t deserve. The conditions are simple: win this tournament to rule the nation, or endure a lifelong punishment. All too eager to escape her place at society’s bottom, Corinn risks her future and accepts the improbable task.

She travels into the heart of Their Majesties’ domain to face her opponents for a spot on the throne. During her trials, she can’t seem to escape Griff Howard, a stranger who reveals that Corinn has been illegally linked to his family for years. Corinn dismisses her dangerous connection to Griff, but when the tournament turns lethal, she’s forced into a tenuous alliance with him.

As lines blur between truth and lie, Corinn and Griff become tangled in a game of secrets and manipulation, playing against the nation’s most dominant forces, including the monarchy itself.

Under scrutiny as they vie for the crown, the pair must unearth the royal bloodline’s secrets in order to save their country... though a single misstep will bring their shared demise.

I have been in such a reading slump lately, but this book pulled me right out of it. I was invested by the first chapter, which doesn’t happen too often for me, and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. The author did an amazing job of keeping me on my toes, throwing in unexpected plot twists, and holding my attention. I was rooting for the characters and internally crying for them throughout this wild ride.

Even though this is the author’s debut novel, it reads like a seasoned writer who has a bunch of books under their belt. I was blown away in the best way possible.

And that cliffhanger…and the plot twist at the very end…I CAN’T. I need book 2 asap.

Just out here waiting for for my Griff Howard 😮‍💨

FRIENDS, DROP EVERYTHING NOW! (Meet me in the pouring rain 🌧️) bestieeeessss it NEEDS to be the 21st already cuz I need ALL of you to run and put this book at the TOP of your TBR (please and thank you 🥹)

Following the death of the lands only heir, a competition for the crown was announced for all eligible young adults to compete. Eager to escape her fate of being society’s bottom, Corinn fights against all odds to win.

I had the ABSOLUTE pleasure of being one of Brittany’s ARC readers and I am ABSOLUTELY reeling at the fact that I have to WAIT for the next book?! Like…MA’AM??? You get royals, rich people, not rich people, a fight for the crown, and a ROMANCE?! Like what more could you ask for?

Brittany does an AMAZING job at pulling you in, to getting you invested in Corinn’s journey (but Brittany, I’m still raging about that INJUSTICE iykyk 😡) I NEED myself a Griff, my lil cinnamon roll boy and Salem, my goofy boy. Like 😍😍😍

Now, if none of that convinced you yet, think, Hunger games mixed with the Selection Series. Tiers competing for the coveted spot of becoming royalty. You have action, comedy, and romance with a splash of injustice. Go read! So then I can have more friends to talk like about it with!!

4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. The beginning starts off very strong. I was immediately swept into the story. The different social levels were very fascinating. I really enjoyed the accolade, the set of trials to win the crown. It felt Hunger Games esque, but way less deadly which I enjoyed. The different systems of voting and eliminating were really cool.

The beginnings of the romance were really good with Griff tutoring Corinn and them getting to know each other and unraveling secrets. One of the things that I didn't love about this book was the romance felt pretty physical. It felt like they didn't really get to know each other on a friendship level, and it was a bit insta-lovey. I still liked them as a couple, but I wish it had been more of an emotional connection between them. You could feel that they cared deeply for each other beyond the physical part but it wasn’t shown very well why. Maybe that happened off page idk. In describing each other in their mind and then they were together there was just more of a focus on physical tension.

The big mistake that the main character makes which kind of changes the course of the book felt anticlimactic for the consequences. There are ways this could have been avoided. And I wish they would have at least addressed why my theories after reading that couldn't have worked.

The portrayal of grief in the main two characters towards the end of the book was really well done. I loved getting to see the main character have a best friend that was a guy which was purely platonic. You don't see that in books very often.

My one other gripe was I almost wished that the book had gone the direction I was expecting. The last 100 pages were crazy and really fascinating, but I guess I almost wished this story hadn't been part of a bigger master plot and that it could have been wrapped up quicker. It felt like there wasn’t a huge amount of a climax. The ending of this book felt more like the dark moment before the climax in the story arc. I understand why that was done but it felt like the main characters' world fell apart and then we cut the curtain. But that means I'm very excited to read the next book. I need to know what happens. Overall, I really enjoyed this. I would recommend it for 16 and up just given the level of romance in this. There as also one swear word in this which I felt was unnecessary.

Content notes: a mention of a side character wearing a sheer dress with just enough jewels to make it acceptable. Two uses of the words “damn” one use of the word “ass” and one use of BS.

Romance: Some descriptions of interest in each other, wanting to be closer, or desire to kiss. two passionate kissing scenes. Mention that tongue was involved, but one sentence of description of that in each scene. Mentions of heart pounding or heat rising at the other's touch. When one character is in the hospital, her love interest visits and she asks him to lay with her. (they both have clothes on.) Not steamy or handsy tho. But the kissing does last a page or two.

Violence: One character killed very little description. Mention of surgery that brainwashed guards. Another is shot several times and dies in a hospital. One character is tortured with boiling water being poured on her legs. One character fake poisons herself.

For fans of Red Queen, The Selection, and Divergent -- enter The Queen's Device! Overall this book was a solid 3.5/4 for me. I'm not huge into YA so that fault is on my end. But I do like a lot of the characters Brittany has crafted, they feel so real! She also does a really great job with her pacing and tension, I was finding myself reaching for my kindle every night until I could finish it (:

Great debut Brittany! Keep it up.

I feel so insanely privileged to have gotten an ARC of this novel and I ATE IT UP. I know that this book is going to gain sooo much popularity, so quickly. It was the perfect mix of nostalgia for the dystopian era of the early 2000s (which I’ll remain in forever, thank you) and fantasy of today. Corinn Januski and Griff Howard are going to become household names for book lovers.

This book is absolutely amazing! I've read many competition books, but this one has something special!

I felt connected to Corinn's journey and there were so many unexpected twist. If you think you know what will happen, you probably don't 😆 I would recommend this book to anyone who loves competition, royalty, and a mix of technology! I'll be rereading this book several times!

Was this perfect? No. Were there plot holes? Absolutely. BUT. I enjoyed this way too much to give it anything less than 5 stars. This was SO much fun to read. I enjoyed this far more than I do most books, and I read A LOT of books, like 200+ a year. And this was wayyyyyy more fun to read than 98% of everything I read.

Sure, the insta love romance wasn’t remotely believable and had me feeling absolutely 0% convinced (the “romance” was by far the worst part of this book and felt super forced, sorry 😭). But this was some of the best world building I’ve ever read. I loved this. So much. Plot holes be damned. It wasn’t perfect but damn was this good! I loved it and will remember this one.

If I could give five million stars to one book it’d be this one. I cannot express to you how much I loved this book, it was so good and had just the right amount of everything. Don’t even get me started on the writing style, the metaphors, oh my goodness this book is a masterpiece and I can’t wait for the next one!!!

In The Queen’s Device, Corinn stands on the edge of a knife. We are pulled into the choices that she makes, consciously and unconsciously, not knowing if the next one will lead to her demise. She’s been on a bad streak all her life, despite her best efforts, but fate, in the form of a handsome, mysterious boy named Griff Howard, seems to be pulling her in a different direction.

Fans of Divergent, The Prison Healer, Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, and Red Queen, will delight in this debut novel. Brittany has managed to take the best of all tropes we know and love, and twist them into something entirely new and refreshing.

Highly recommend!

Wow. Honestly. What. A. Ride. This book was even better than I imagined, and I'm so happy I read it (literally can't wait for the next book)!

I've got all the vibes from the story: ToG, Divergant, Hunger Games,...

The worldbuilding was great, the plot - the STAKES! - kept me from getting my 8 hrs of sleep and the romance was just so cute!

So many twists and plots and questions about who to trust—I can’t imagine being in Griff or Corinn’s shoes.

I loved Griff. How in the world he stayed so sweet and compassionate in such oppressive circumstances, I don’t know. His compassion and humor made this book for me. I didn’t connect as well with Corinn, especially in the beginning, but she grew on me as the story became more intricate and interesting chapter by chapter. I’m not sure how to feel about Max or Abner, but Julia is the perfect kind of villain—the one you hurt for but also love to hate.

And that ending—woah!

I struggled a bit with some of the medical terminology seemingly inserted at random places (like using “dorsum” instead of saying back of the hand in the description of a romantic caress) and the repeated ideas about the class divides and related feelings. But the concept of the story was so good, I enjoyed it overall!

It made me think a bit of the movie The Village, the show Revolution, and books like The Selection. So if you enjoy those kinds of stories, give this one a read!

**Notes: The romance was mild (some passionate kissing), and there were a few uses of foul language (d*** and a**). Also includes brief scenes of violence and torture.

If you’re one of those people who wish they could reread Divergent or the Selection again for the first time, this book is for you!

I was so honored to have read this great debut novel! Though I don’t often read YA, it was fun to jump into a nostalgic-feeling dystopian novel. I enjoyed the many twists and turns (especially the ending) as well as the fun worldbuilding. While the romance was a little more insta-love for my taste, I have no doubt it will have many readers kicking their feet and giggling. I’m excited for the next installment!

This book was delightful. It’s perfect for fans of The Selection and The Hunger Games; full of tension, plot twists, and swoony romance; and when I tell you the ending will leave you floored. 🤯

I really enjoyed the relationships between Corinn and Griff 😍 and Corinn and Salem (don’t worry, there is no love triangle), and loved the other characters as well (they might not be all they seem 👀) And if you’re a fan of complicated villains you love to hate, look no further than Julia. 👑

Although at times Corinn’s inner dialogue felt a little repetitive to me, she had a great arc that emphasizes the struggle we all have feeling worthy of more. One of the many reasons I loved Griff so much—he helps Corinn to see herself as more than her tier.

The last several chapters were probably my favorites of the whole book (the stress! The plot twists! 😰) There were so many changes from when I beta read this book last year, and wow—it’s even better than before! Mack did a great job on her debut!

And side note, may I just say that my physical copy is one of the most pleasant and elite paperbacks I have ever had the pleasure of owning 👌🏻🤩

I hope you enjoy this fast-paced gem of a book if you give it a try!

Good luck vying for the crown. 👑✨🌌

🌶️ some passionate kisses, longing
⚠️ some graphic descriptions of murder, injury, loss of loved ones

This book was absolutely outstanding!! The author crafts this world in such a perfect way, you feel as if you are standing right there, in Miota. She creates such strong characters that you love and are rooting for, from start to finish. The storyline was so addicting!! It kind of gave me Hunger Games x The Giver x The Cruel Prince vibes, all while being completely unique! This book was everything and more! Corinn was such a lovable character. She shows the struggles of wanting to be liked and acknowledged by people, which is something I feel that we all go through at some point in our lives. She is brave, courageous, and just an amazing fmc. Definitely one of my new favorite characters.
The romance in this book was so perfect. It’s all clean ya (yay!) and it has the perfect amount of slow burn!! I won’t give away who gets together, but I am here for it!!
Overall this book was so amazing!! You’ll adore the characters and the storyline. You’re heart will be ripped out and then it’ll be sewed up a bit and then you’ll be practically begging for the sequel (ahhh it’s not a want but a NEED atp) If you love dystopians, fantasy, and romance, you definitely will want to read this!! It’s out May 21st, and it’s available for pre order!!

5/5 WOW WOW and WOW

Let me first give credit for getting me out of my reading slump this book is it!

The Queen's Device offered an electrifying plunge into a world of high stakes and power plays. Corrin's journey is so relatable with her fierce determination, yet she can be vulnerable which embodies the perfect blend of resilience and naivety.

The twists and turns had me at the edge of my seat! I was clutching my Kindle for dear life in anticipation of what was going to happen next. The stakes felt so real throughout the book I felt like I was there (not that I would be a strong or fierce competitor lol) but the world-building made it feel like I could touch the world Brittany created.

Can we give a round of applause for Griff Howard?? What a cinnamon roll it is so refreshing. DON'T GET ME WRONG I love me some morally grey, but sometimes you just need an ally in this world and it will make you kick your feet and giggle all the more.

With well-drawn characters, an intricate plot, and a richly imagined world, the Queen's Device stands out as a remarkable addition to the YA genre. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see what Brittany has in store for us ESPECIALLY AFTER THAT PLOT TWIST!

I felt the exact same way after finishing Fourth Wing and Powerless when I finished this - destroyed and angry but in the best way!

This book gripped me from the very beginning and I couldn’t keep reading fast enough - there were so many twists, my head was spinning. I wanted to throw it all away, I wanted to hug Corinn, I wanted to slap her and push some sense into her, all of that. I grew very attached to the characters, which doesn’t always happen for me - I miss them already 🥲

If you loved Hunger Games, The Selection or generally YA dystopia - this book is definitely for you! Thank you for this amazing ARC opportunity 🥹🫶🏻

This book was as good as I had hoped–

The Hunger Games meets Divergent and the Selection in a brand new twist? Yes please.

The Characters were awesome, the worldbuilding incredible, and THAT ENDING: dude, that cliff-hanger was cruel to us readers (though I guessed the last visitor like a page before the ending. I knew something was off from the start with them, but DAMN. I was glad and so excited I kicked my feet in the air and tried not to scream, 'cause the kids are napping.) I NEED BOOK TWO!!! like now. asap.

anyway- great read, loved it, and can't wait to read the rest of this story. Brittany, you're awesome! <3

This book was fantastic!
The twists and turns were perfectly achieved, even from the beginning of the book!
The was so much great world building and even though there was so much so new information, the author did a great job of getting it through without it being confusing.
Even from the first few paragraphs, this one had me hooked and I could barely put it down!
One of my favorite things about this book was the way it kinda reminded me other books, but it still had it’s own ‘vibe’.

A solid 3.5 stars for me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

While I found Corinn’s inner dialogue to be repetitive at times, and wished the competition aspect of the book had been a little more flushed out, the last 50 pages or so left me hanging with so many questions, and had so many consecutive plot twists that I could barely keep up, which was a fun reading experience for sure! Also, Salem and Griff have too many green flags to count, which we love to see 💚

I can’t believe I got to read this book as an ARC! It reminded me of why I love to read. It brought me right back to my Dystopian era and is holding me there. It was so refreshing, with a plot that was original and characters that had me reading WAY past my bedtime. This author knew what she was doing, and I can’t wait for book 2.

The Queens Device has quickly become one of my favorite stories. The journey Corrin takes through trials and self discovery are enough to thrill any young reader.
Brittany’s world of Miota sucks you in and refuses to let go. When you open The Queen’s Device, be prepared to stay put until the last page is turned.
I cannot wait to see more from Brittany and dive into book 2!

For me this is about a 3.5/5 stars for me but definitely rounding up because I think it was a solid debut novel. This was a fresh take on a dystopian competition book. There is rags to riches, a love interest who is absolutely smitten by the MC, dystopian themes, and a golden retriever best friend. I really liked the characters and that ending! I have so many questions and feelings. I was hoping for a stronger character arc for Corinn, she was way to “woe is me” and self-pitying for much too long. But I’m excited to see what happens in the next one!
