Rate this book
The heart-pounding sequel to Cast in Firelight, perfect for fans of epic, sweepingly romantic fantasy by Sabaa Tahir, Susan Dennard, and Mary E. Pearson.

After a magical eruption devastates the kingdom of Belwar, royal heir Adraa is falsely accused of masterminding the destruction and forced to stand trial in front of her people, who see her as a monster. Adraa's punishment? Imprisonment in the Dome, an impenetrable, magic-infused fortress filled with Belwar’s nastiest criminals—many of whom Adraa put there herself. And they want her to pay.

Jatin, the royal heir to Naupure, has been Adraa’s betrothed, nemesis, and fellow masked vigilante . . . but now he’s just a boy waiting to ask her the biggest question of their lives. First, though, he’s going to have to do the impossible: break Adraa out of the Dome. And he won’t be able to do it without help from the unlikeliest of sources—a girl from his past with a secret that could put them all at risk.

Time is running out, and the horrors Adraa faces in the Dome are second only to the plot to destabilize and destroy their kingdoms. But Adraa and Jatin have saved the world once already. . . . Now, can they save themselves?

i completely expected this to be a trilogy, so when the ending came, i was surprised at how nice and neat everything is wrapped up. its definitely a very satisfying and appropriate conclusion for a duology.

in line with the first book, the world-building is the star here. the magic is luminous, the kingdoms are unique, and the way it all comes together is really exciting. it also helps that there is a great cast of characters who are all complex and real. the pacing also works well - i never felt like anything was used or included as filler.

the reason im not rating this 5 stars, like i did ‘cast in firelight,’ is only because of personal preferences. its a pet peeve of mine when main characters are separated, which is what happens for the majority of this installment. it tends to make one of the storylines feel like they are lacking and trying to catch up to the other, which is what happens to jatin here. it does give an opportunity to introduce a new character, but i personally did not like the forced love triangle that went absolutely nowhere before it even got started. i think adding fiza was fine, good even for the plot, but her feelings for jatin are completely unnecessary.

but overall, this is a fun and adventurous sequel. i hope this is actually extended and does become a trilogy because theres a lot of great material here!

thank you so much, random house and delacorte press, for the ARC!!

"Blame is so easy to pass around, but it's also hard to get rid of"

Have you ever experienced this, where you're back from an outing with friends and home to feeling like the loneliest person in the world? Well, that's what it feels like to finish this. This sequel is almost perfect and I'm sad it's a goodbye for now.

Bound by Firelight picks up what was left previously where Adraa is put on a trial after being wrongly accused of being the villain in the fatal eruption of Mount Gandhak. This leads to her people losing faith in her as an heir and in her family as rulers. The catch? She was imprisoned in the Dome.

I wouldn't say the plot is anything interesting, especially when Adraa and Jatin are separated for most of the story. It's pretty much running of the mill and a little predictable. Swift did not take up the full potential in using the political satire for this novel which was such a crestfallen. I was expecting more focus would be channeled on taking down Moolek and uncovering his motive, than making a rescue mission its entire plot.

However, the inimitable writing helps to make readers more engaged. It was well-written and at times, suspenseful to keep my attention and interest throughout the piece. There was a plot twist I didn't see coming, a betrayal, death — and it makes me feel all sorts of emotions. I'm laughing, I'm crying, and did a dramatic gasp every time.

On a side note, I did mention in my previous review the interesting chapter names as one of the book's strongest points. But for some reason, it wasn't as alluring as before. Perhaps, the chapter's name itself is not as compelling or the tension is too good that I bypassed it every time. Not like it was any of importance, though I wished Swift would keep the momentum.

"I will always be happy if Adraa Belwar chooses me"

Adraa and Jatin just made it to my fav YA couples, which I could probably count with fingers on who I have on my list. Even when they were not together most of the time, you can feel the love running between them in their POVs, making the romance a top-notch. Not to mention, their trademark of doing the inconvenience amid a battle — last time it was them professing love, and now we have Other times, I would be making faces because it was so untimely, but this works. I love it if they make it their thing.

Adraa and Jatin continue to be the amazing character they are; seeing how far they were progressing from the last book. Especially Adraa, given how phenomenal and riveting it was reading her chapters. Hands down, my favorite part of the book. Readers were also introduced to new characters, which brings the book into another light. I love to get to know Harini and how her presence impacted the plot. The rest of the side characters were also given ample scrutiny to a point that they were less forgettable, and I liked that about the book this time.

Nevertheless, I still couldn't comprehend the significance of Fiza as a potential lover and didn't appreciate the attempt to insert a love triangle in Adraa and Jatin's love story. Notably, when you realized her character could've been given a little introduction and cameo in the previous book if she were to be Jatin's admirer who bugged him while they attended the school together as Jatin mentioned. But nope, not even a word during the exchanging letter where it was an ideal time to do so, considering how competitive Adraa and Jatin were. He could've made a point about having someone liking him to boast, hence why I failed to catch its purpose. I don't know what it serves to the plot and to an extent, it feels unnecessary. The trope itself is not on my good side, and now you're writing a poor bid of it. Yeah, -1 rating just for that.

I feel like there is a probable sequel to this and if it does, I'm delighted that Bound by Firelight does not suffer from a middle book syndrome. It was flawed but still wouldn't take the enjoyment of reading this. With the powerful message of family and love, and the magic system, this novel remains excellent in visuals. I would recommend the series to anyone who's in for a thrilling YA book.

"They've put me in here because they think I'm the most dangerous person in Wickery. And for the time I might have been. I'm not anymore.
But that's what I'm going to become."

Bound by Firelight picks up shortly after the end of Cast in Firelight. Adraa is being falsely accused of having planned the volcano’s explosion, and after a joke of a trial, almost everyone believes that she is indeed guilty, even though Adraa knows that dark magic, and probably Moolek, is behind it all. Jatin’s top priority is now to prove Adraa’s innocence, with the help of their friends and even one new and unexpected character.

This book offers a mostly satisfying ending. The whereabouts of the main villain are still unknown though so there is an opening for a third book if the author ever decides to continue with this series, which I wouldn't be opposed to.

As is the first book, I loved the magic system! The colors and castings are very original and get even more complex in this sequel. We also got to see more of black and yellow magic in action, which was nice because black magic is all about illusions so it added a touch of uncertainty and doubt to the story.

The lights from the street bellow illuminated Jatin Naupure, my boyfriend. Boyfriend. It’s strange thinking of him that way, considering he was my fiancé first, then a weird mix of rival, partner, and crush, though we were hiding our identities from each other for months. And now, he’s just… my person.”

There are chapters from Adraa’s and Jatin’s point of view, which was great because they (sadly) spend a lot of time apart and I couldn’t wait for them to finally be together again. It was nice though to see them both changing and becoming more mature and confident in this book. They started as teenagers in the first book, and they finished this book as two adults. Jatin becomes a strong leader, and Adraa is even more determined to fight for what is right.

”You’re terrifying, Adraa Belwar. And I’m so in love with you.”

I loved seeing Jatin and Adraa together, they are really cute and I love how devoted and kind Jatin was. He is true boyfriend material. I do wish that they’d have more moments together in this book though. I understand the necessity of them being separated for the plot to progress, but I missed their witty banter and cute moments.

My main issue is with the plot though. Don’t get me wrong, I liked this book very much and it’s a page-turner, but it mostly focuses on Adraa being wrongfully accused of being responsible for the volcano’s explosion and her friends trying to clear her name. I was hoping for the political aspect of this story to take more room in the plot. I wanted to know what was Moolek’s big plan, what he did, or what he would do… Because of the way the first book ends we know that he’s involved in the illegal things happening in Belwar, but then it was not really explained in this book until we got to the last 25% of the story.

The last 100 pages or so are great! Packed with action, fighting, betrayal, life-threatening situations, and cute romance. The rest was good too, but as I previously said, I was hoping for more depth in the plot politically-wise.

On a side note, I have to say that I adore the title of the chapters in both books of this series! They are funny and hint at what is about to happen without giving too much information. It might seem silly to focus on this, but I noticed it in both books and I love it.

Happy Release Day to Dana Swift and Bound by Firelight!

Along with the gorgeous cover, this book is filled with action, intrigue, and a great cast of characters that will keep you turning pages from start to finish.

Also, with that ending, I highly suspect there will be a third book, but we'll just have to wait and see!

Thank you to Random House Children’s/Delacorte Press via Netgalley for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Bound by Firelight, the second book in the Wickery series, picks up shortly after the conclusion of the first book. Adraa has been falsely accused of masterminding the events from the first book, and she is imprisoned in the Dome. After a debacle of a trial, almost no one believes in Adraa’s innocence, but Adraa is certain magic is at play. Ever devoted to the woman he loves and wants to marry (if he can ever get enough courage to ask her), Jatin is determined to prove Adraa’s innocence and break her free from the Dome. With help from friends and a few unexpected allies, can Jatin rescue Adraa before it’s too late? Also, is it a coincidence that she was sent to this unscrupulous place, or are there even more nefarious happening than Adraa ever expected? The stakes are high, and lives are at risk as Adraa and Jatin fight their way back to each other.

After reading and loving Cast in Firelight, the first book in the Wickery series, I jumped at the chance to read Bound by Firelight. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2022, and I loved it! There’s so much action, suspense, and intrigue, and the characters are amazing! Plus, it has a really unique magic system, which is expanded on in this book, and the romance is wonderful.

The story is told from both Adraa and Jatin’s perspectives, which is great considering they spend a lot of the book separated and trying to find their way back to each other. Their journeys are so different, yet each is compelling, and they complement each other well. I found myself attached to both Jatin and Adraa’s arcs and couldn’t wait to see if they ever reconnected and how they would fix all of the issues that plagued them and their world.

Both Jatin and Adraa have grown so much throughout the duology, and I like how their respective journeys and their journey as a couple progressed. Jatin becomes a stronger and more confident leader, and Adraa never stops fighting. Both Adraa and Jatin go through so many trials and tribulations, and the stories are intense! Adraa’s time in the Dome is frightening and unpredictable and violent, (and really fascinating. The magic in this part of the story is so cool!) and her life is in constant danger.

Even before entering the Dome, Adraa’s life and the lives of those around her were at risk. It seems as if danger follows her and Jatin, as they are constantly faced with seemingly impossible obstacles. However, both characters prove strong, determined, and resilient. Jatin and Adraa do not give up no matter the odds. They are survivors and leaders, and they fight against the powers that threaten to destroy them and the people and places they love, which makes for a super suspenseful, fast-paced, and action-packed read.

I absolutely adore the romance between Adraa and Jatin! Though they spend much of the book apart, their feelings for each other shine. The way he feels about Adraa is *chef’s kiss* perfection. From his bumbling attempts to propose to his fierce determination to free her from prison, Jatin’s feelings for Adraa are unwavering and lovely. They have some wonderful, tender moments that highlight just how much they care for each other, and they were positively swoon-worthy! Adraa and Jatin have both grown individually and as a couple, and though it’s the end of the series, it feels like their story is just beginning.

Another relationship that I found intriguing is between Adraa and her sister Prisha. Prisha has a substantial role in this book, and you really get to understand her more and see the layers of their relationship. This sibling relationship, like many sibling relationships, is complicated and messy, but the love between the sisters is strong. Other characters and relationships, new and old, are compelling and poignant too, and I like how much they added to the story. Much like its predecessor, this book has great messages about the bonds of family, the strength of friendship, and the immense power of love.

I loved Bound on Firelight and thought it was a brilliant sequel to the Wickery series. This isn’t a standalone, but I would definitely recommend the books to readers of YA fantasy. Thanks so much to NetGalley, Dana Swift, and Delacorte Press for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Bound by Firelight is the second book in the Wickery duology and it was such a satisfying follow up to the first book! A duology is the perfect length for a series in my opinion and this book will be up there with some of my favorites! This book picked up right after the events of Cast in Firelight and follow Aadra and Jatin as they try to regain control after the fallout from the dramatic ending of the book.
I first have to point out how gorgeous the cover is 😍 I’m still all about these beautiful illustrated covers for fantasy books, I’ll never get over them. I also love that this book along with Cast in Firelight have actual chapter titles. I feel like most books just have numbered titles now and I’ve found that I appreciate worded titles and their hints at the chapters so much more.
This book was full of action, romance and humor. There was more world building and progression of the magic system which I loved. One of my hopes after reading the first book was that the color-based magic system would expanded upon even more and it definitely was in this book. The world itself was also built upon and new characters were introduced which added a lot to the plot.
Aadra and Jatin were separated for a lot of this book so there weren’t as many cute moments between them but I still really enjoyed their relationship. They balanced each other really well and were always so supportive of each other.
I’m excited to read more by this author in the future!

words. is that even something that i can do anymore?? i doubt it but i can try.

i absolutely loved 'cast in firelight'. the combination of entertaining characters, a good magic system, and an intriguing plot together created a book that was totally up my alley. and with the way the first book ended? i was *completely* hyped for 'bound by firelight'.

and thankfully, this book pretty much delivered.

once again, this book is much more plot-based than character-driven, so everything that happens directly affects the characters and the way they react. there's definitely character growth, but it isn't obvious; it's subtly shown where it makes the most impact on the plot.

speaking of the plot, even if it was less 'fun' and more serious than the last book, things still move quite quickly here, with action and intrigue woven together. for my part, i read through most of this book in a day technically while i was supposed to be helping my brother with his math course but we don't talk about that.

ummm, magic??? that was good. more interesting stuff happened with that. yes.

yeah i don't even know anymore. i don't have much to say, but not in a bad way?? it was satisfying to read and a good conclusion, and that's that i suppose.

the characters were just as enjoyable to read about as last time, along with some new ones that were introduced. things got a little fast there at the end but overall it made for a fun experience. roses are red, chalkboards are slate, i've never had an original thought in my life, but this book was great—all that good stuff.

All I want to talk about in this review is the relationship between Jatin and Adraa and how cool and perfect they are as characters. I have to admit that at first I was scared this book wouldn’t live up to Cast in Firelight and thank God it did. I won’t say it was better but it was at the same level –I think- it still has a few issues that I see in the pace and events in the book but for me they are minor things to consider. And here I go:

I’m going to say the things I didn’t like first to then pour my soul into the things I did like about it. The pace of the book was great, it started with things to do and solve and then move on to matters of the heart, meaning, it ripped my heart out to read what was done to Adraa, I can’t explain how powerless I felt while reading this, I mean, I was literally screaming at my screen when what happened happen *ughh* -that was good I’m not complaining about that- then the pace got slower and then it picked up again. My problem with this was the way the final battle was handle, I didn’t feel at all worried about what was going on and the way the first book ended made my heart explode. In comparison, this ending was less stressful, it was great I won’t lie but it needed more –that’s my humble opinion- Another thing I didn’t like that much was the distracting intentions Fiza had towards Jatin, I mean, I knew in my heart that boy was not going to betray Adraa and the fact that some things were forced just for the sake of having a “difficulty” between the main characters was unnecessary –in my opinion the writer could have created problems some other way- and a final thought on this is that I would have liked to see more of her parents and Mr. Burman. This doesn’t affect the book at all but, I don’t know, I would have liked that and I’m hoping we’ll get more of them in the future books I know are coming

It’s Mr. Burman who finds me. He always was good at that. For a second I wonder whether I would have gotten away with any of the Red Woman exploits if he had been around.

And now with the good stuff<3 Even though I didn’t like how the final battle was handled the story, plot and pace were great. I liked how the book can stand on its own, even knowing the writer has plans on continuing this series and settled a base or platform in this book for that, meaning, even adding that extra layer of necessary information for future books the story of this book wasn’t sidetracked in the process. As I said before, my heart was ripped out at the beginning of this book and while the pace of the book got slower in a way, it was still interesting to read. Dana did an amazing job by making us love this world and characters because no matter what she delivered here, it was going to be great. I also liked how this book took Jatin and Adraa apart from each other –even though I didn’t like it at first- because it forced them to grow in the way they needed to grow. Jatin as a leader and Adraa needed to face and overcome her insecurities.

Another thing I liked about the book was getting to know a little bit of how this country works and getting that necessary bigger picture on the other countries that are around. Dana is still building this world and I can’t wait to know more of it. Also, -and this is a consistency with the first book- I loved the magic here. The first book made me love the magic of this world and I thought I was not going to get anything more on it but here I am, being surprise and loving the new magic that was shown here –even when I didn’t understand how the drug was really made- It was wonderful to see Adraa go beyond of what she thought she could do because of her one arm touch, the process of her learning new magic was a challenge this world hasn’t seen and one they though impossible, so reading about her doing it –and with her Adraa attitude- was awesome. Also, that new facet of them visiting their gods and that giving them in turn ways to control their magic no one else has –except for Moolek- was a new page in how this world works or worked or could work and I am wishing to know what the writer will do with this and the gods.

We stare at one another. Me at her. Her at me. It’s eerily like looking in a mirror, like living in another dimension. I know my vision gets murky during burnout, but this is next level. How much blood did I lose?

She glares at me. “The volcano. Your imprisonment. The unrest. No wonder you are losing. You didn’t even know it had begun?”

Also, the comedy was still present with the characters even while facing difficult situations and again, that didn’t pull me away from the main story line. It was awesome when a funny line kicked in, it also shows how amazing Dana is because I know it must not be easy to be funny and still keep the seriousness of the events somehow. I love that because it makes the characters seem real and that’s the best.

I reach for my belt and yank out my skyglider, Hubris the Fourth.

I don’t know if I should be impressed with this witch or hate her. It’s already bloody annoying casting a conversation during a shoot-out. Now I have to try to do it with the likes of Miss Fake Me, who answers questions with questions.

Riya glares at me over Adraa’s shoulder. “You couldn’t have put up a barrier so we could all have a proper reunion?” Riya hugs Adraa even closer. “Please, don’t leave me alone with them again.”

And now with the characters. I really liked that the sister had some kind of spotlight in this book, I loved the new characters that this book presented, they were an amazing addition to the characters that we already know from the previous book, the only bad thing about this is that we don’t get a lot of page time with other characters that I would have liked to see again. And here come my sweeties, Jatin and Adraa. I was floating in the air with happiness because of them, I mean, they are the cutest couple there is, I really love them. They make an amazing team, they are right for each other, they are there for each other and they are soooo romantic that I couldn’t even be afraid of Fiza –though I would have liked for Jatin to say to Adraa what he almost did!- I loved how the writer highlighted my favorite parts from the first book in this one and because she gave us an amazing beginning with them as a couple, this book didn’t have to make an effort for them, meaning, even with the distance between our main characters, the relationship between them worked, their moments together were THE BEST, I know they don’t have a lot of time being a couple but they still manage to give these moments of matureness and togetherness that not all couples in books accomplish. I’m not going to lie, I am afraid Dana may somehow ruin or dragged things with them in future books –because let’s face it, they’re young- but I have to wait and see what comes next. In short, I love them!!

Jatin glances up a second later and our eyes lock. All the thudding terror washes away as he lights up and smiles. Disregard good. He’s the most wonderful thing I’ve ever seen. And Gods, I almost forgot what that smile could do to me.

“You’re terrifying, Adraa Belwar. And I’m so in love with you.”

He smothers me in a hug, his arms engulfing me. “Forget I said anything. Let me hold you.” Then, so quietly I almost miss it, Jatin whispers, “Let me hold you forever.”

I could add a million parts of the book here to convey my love for them but I can’t so, yes, this is it. I loved to read this book and my fear at starting it only enhanced my experience. If you have doubts about this book please don’t, it’s AMAZING!!<3

Readers are finally getting the e-ARCs for BOUND BY FIRELIGHT so I wanted to answer any questions I can here and let everyone know the trigger warnings in this book.

You can request an e-ARC on Netgalley here: https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/boo...

1. There will be a preorder campaign. All information and sign ups will be coming very soon. I’m planning to announce everything the beginning of November 2021.

2. There will be an audiobook with the same narrators as Cast in Firelight. It will come out the same day as the hardcover and ebook - January 18, 2022.

Trigger warnings: BOUND BY FIRELIGHT is a little bit darker and a little more violent than the first book, CAST IN FIRELIGHT. However, the sexual content and cursing is the same level as the first book with no sex scenes and only fantasy terms for curses (blood).

Trigger warnings (spoiler free)
Fantasy-related violence in fight scenes, blood/gore, talk of drugs and drug addiction (though it’s a made-up fantasy substance).
I did want to specify here there are NO scenes of sexual assault in this book.
*If any reader would like to amend or add to this list please contact me through my website, www.danaswiftbooks.com.

I received an arc of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

rating: five stars (★★★★★)

Let's just begin this review by saying that Bound by Firelight destroyed me in the best way possible. It is the second book, in what I hope is a trilogy, and from the beginning to the end it had me on the edge of my seat. If you liked the magic system, the characters or the first book in general you're for sure gonna love the sequel.

This book exceeded all my expectations and in my personal opinion it's even better than the first book. Even though it's a sequel it didn't fall under the second book syndrome and it wasn't just a filler for the third book. Quite the opposite, there were just so many amazing qualities that it would take me a long while to list them all. After reading a couple really underwhelming second books this past month I was very much impressed.

Bound by Firelight continues from where the previous book ended and once again we follow the main characters Adraa and Jatin while they attempt to solve mysteries and save their kingdoms, but also themselves and their relationship. The pacing of the book was really consistent and none of the plot felt rushed. Every single second of this book was action packed and it never lacked any tension which was very enjoyable. This book was a wild ride from page one to the very last one and I was hooked the entire time. There were some plot twist that I couldn't predict and they were amazingly done. And that ending!!!

All of the side characters are also the highlight of the series and they were the most lovable. We are also introduced to some new ones that I personally happen to love a lot as well.

What mostly draws me to this series is all the political intrigue and countless betrayals, scheming, hidden identities and their final reveal. If you're like me and you also happen to enjoy all of this then you better pick it up right away.
Overall, the sequel was fantastic, it made me both ugly cry and laugh which is always a good thing.

I've been so excited for this book! I adored Adraa and Jatin's story in Cast in Firelight. So I was thrilled to get an early copy of its sequel Bound by Firelight.

This book was just as good as the first one and I felt immersed from the first page. I grew to love the dynamics of Adraa's relationships with her family, her friends and Jatin. In this book, Adraa is wrongly imprisoned and Jatin and the gang must find a way to help her escape.

New friendships are made and more obstacles are put in Adraa's path. There were some cool twists and a few tender moments. I loved the world, magic system and characters Dana Swift has created. I came to feel invested in her plot and characters.

The book's conclusion brought everything together and left me satisfied. I just loved it all!

Bound by Firelight will be released January 18th, 2022.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for sending me a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book! It was even better than the first book which is saying something because that one was great.

This book was a non-stop thrill ride from page one until the end. There were so many moments where I gasped out loud or was just so enraged that I had to stop reading for a second. It also helped the book to move at an excellent pace! Pacing is a big deal to me and I've been known to stop reading books that are just too slow, but this book was perfect. The action was frequent enough that I was fully entertained, but not so overwhelming that I felt like I never got a break.

As well, there were so many amazing surprises in this book. Seriously, if you thought the twists and turns in book one were nuts, that was all child play compared to this one. Just when I'd think I had a handle on things and would feel like the situation couldn't get worse, it did. I'm still so stunned by how well it was all plotted out and written.

Also, just like the first book, the world-building is on-point. Everything is described so well that I could create a solid visual in my mind, but not so detailed as to bore me. There are a lot of working elements here so it's really impressive the way Swift was able to continue building everything in such a natural way. 10/10.

Next, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my favorite lover boy, Jatin. We get so many cute moments with him and some goofy ones too. However, we see some real development in his character in this book. I feel like we were just getting to know him in the first book and now we see him change and grow up. He has responsibilities and people relying on him and he takes it all in stride. I loved seeing this side of him combined with the parts I already love.

The romance was just as sweet in this book as the first. We get lots of lovely Jatin and Adraa moments (as well as a glimpse at another budding couple). I just can't get over how great they both are. And how great they are for each other. Every scene with them together just made me smile. Well, most scenes, but I'm not thinking about those. They are true couple goals.

Overall, this was an absolute win for Swift! I'm not sure if this series will be a duology or trilogy since the end of this book really felt like it could go both ways. I'm hoping it's a trilogy because I'm not ready to say goodbye to everyone yet! Pick up this book (or the first one if you haven't it yet) and fall in love with a whole new world.

*4 RICH STARS*

“And now, he’s just…my person.”

Well, this was a great conclusion to a very enjoyable duology! It honestly baffles me that this series isn't more popular.
I loved the rich worlds of Belwar and Naupure and both Adraa and Jatin and all the supporting characters. Though they were separated for a good portion of the book, I enjoyed their individual chapters and how they came together again.
I feel like this book was a lot darker than the first one and dealth with a lot darker topics. I often wondered how the hell this was going to have a happy ending, but I'm glad with the way things ended up!

I'm wondering if there will ever be a third book though, since some things weren't totally tied up. Adraa and Jatin's relationship and Moolek's fate among others.
I definitely wouldn't mind a third book!

My thoughts going into the second book was there’s no way the author will top the performance of the previous book, but I was wrong. Bound by Firelight was just as fabulous as the first book.
Adraa, the protagonist was flawed but fierce. In the face of overwhelming opposition by her own people, family, friends, and a formidable foe, she overcame. The moral of the story… don’t give up doing good, it pays off in the end…It helped that she had someone like Jatim and many others leading the charge in her defence.
I loved every minute of it, I did not want to part with the characters and the story world. Five stars.

It's a free world this is better than Percy Jackson... Hehe... Please don't kill me. The tension, irritation -Yeah there are some magic exploitation going on in this book- and its epic. Romance, action- packed and all lies within that book. Bound by fire light sequel to cast in firelight is better. I didn't see that coming honestly. Adraa being imprisoned and her voice taken... I will stop there. Please this book it's the best and also trying giving the debut time while reading.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Please read my book 1 review to understand where my 1-star rating stems from:

Darci's Review of Cast in Firelight

I do not wish to provide my typical in-depth review for this book because, as far as I can tell, the offensive representation from book 1 carried into this one (some of these elements were unchangeable, such as the character's identities and the muddled blend of South Asian culture with made-up content).

My general take on this book (harmful content aside (but not ignored), as I do not feel I am the right person to speak here): this sequel was simply not as strong as it's processor in terms of romantic content and plot. This book was much drier, plot-heavy, and, quite frankly, disappointing. The only redeeming quality was Adraa's character growth. I found her to be the most lovable character of the cast, and I admired her strength while in an especially tough spot.

My favorite of her lines:

"They've put me in here because they think I'm the most dangerous person in Wickery. And for the time I might have been. I'm not anymore.

But that's what I'm going to become."

4.5/5 stars (rounded up to 5)

I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

*Spoilers for book one ahead*

After saving her kingdom, Adraa is falsely accused of causing all of the destruction. Found guilty of her crimes, she is sentenced to life in the Dome, Belwar's highest-level prison. Meanwhile, Jatin has been trying (and failing) at proposing. Things get even more complicated when Adraa is thrown in prison. Determined to get her back, Jatin begins plotting a dangerous rescue mission.

I think I'm in the minority, but I actually liked this sequel more than book 1! It had a lot of action and high stakes, so I was very intrigued by the story!

I absolutely adore Adraa and Jatin's relationship! They really balance each other out. Their scenes together tend to be my favorites!

I also want to point out that this book, like the first, has chapter titles! These days, most books have done away with chapter titles. I miss seeing them, so I was glad that book 2 still had them!

As I already said, this book was action-packed! However, there were a few things that bothered me. I hate the trope where the lovers are separated for most of the book! That's a personal preference, but I wish Adraa and Jatin had more time together. There was also a very fleeting and pointless love triangle (if it can even be called that...) which was just unnecessary.

The ending of this book was satisfying and conclusive enough to keep me happy, but it felt a little rushed and abrupt. I'm not sure if there will be a book three, but I feel like I need a little more closure.

Overall, this book was enjoyable and I had a hard time putting it down! I had a few issues with it, but I still liked it! Fans of the first book should give this one a shot! I'd recommend this series to YA fantasy romance fans who enjoy the arranged marriage trope and lots of action/magical battles.

Content: violence, torture, bloodletting, no sex scenes but some kissing, no actual swearing outside of fictional swear words, death

Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Children's, Delacorte Press, and Dana Swift for the opportunity to read Bound by Firelight in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second novel in the Wickery duology, preceded by Cast in Firelight, and picks up nearly right where the first novel left off.

After saving Belwar from a rigged volcanic eruption, Adraa is accused of being the cause of the eruption, as well as the deaths of 129 people. During her trial, a truth spell is cast, but it seems her trial is manipulated, as she says the very untruth that everyone else percieves as the truth. Instead of the Belwarian death sentence for such a crime, she is sent to an isolated prison where a spell is used to silence prisoners so they cannot cast magic. But Adraa soon learns from her cellmate that one does not need a voice to use their forte.

Meanwhile, Jatin knows he must help Adraa escape the prison, despite her telling him not to. He's not the only one eager to get Adraa out and clear her name. Her sister and her guard, as well as her best friend and Jatin's guard all team up to help in Adraa's escape plan. What Jatin doesn't expect is the involvement of a girl from school, the Lady of Agsa, who also happens to seek Jatin's hand in marriage. But Jatin only has eyes for one, and he is set on saving her.

In the prison, the girls are set up as brawlers, similar to the underground forte fighting, though without their fortes to help them. Through these fights, Adraa learns something more sinister must be at work in the prison. Why else would she be set up to go there instead of the death sentence? Hopefully she can make her way out or have Jatin save her before everything goes up in flames!

When I first started this novel, it didn't quite have the same feel as the first one. I liked the aspect of the first book in which Jatin and Adraa were getting to know each other, but their identities were also hidden. There was an aspect of old rivalry and friendship regarding their frist meeting and continual letters. This book takes their relationship further and develops the idea of how far they would go for each other. I like the new relationship feel more, but once I got into this novel, I found there was really a lot to the plot and its progression. Certain aspects did seem to take a while, but one of my favorite elements was the characters learning to tap into their forte without the use of voice. I also liked some of the new characters that were added in; not too many, just right, and they were developed well. I also like that the supporting characetrs from the first novel get their chance to be a part of the action and are likewise developed further in a great way that doesn't have the need to dig too deep.

I find that duologies are becoming more and more common, and I likewise find I enjoy reading duologies more than trilogies or series with even more books. I think a two-book series might just be the new magic number! The two in this series felt like each book had its own main agenda, but also had a conclusive wrap-up that felt wholesome  and well-attained. A well-worthwhile series for any young adult fantasy romance fan.

★★☆☆☆

Honestly, this book presented a mixed reading experience for me, showcasing both improvements and areas that fell short of my expectations. While the book had its moments, it left me with a sense of ambivalence.

Again, like I said in my review of the first book (found here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) I wish Dana had double checked her book with someone who was South Asian, because I really don’t hate her writing.

One notable improvement was the increased pacing compared to its predecessor. The story unfolded at a quicker tempo, attempting to keep readers engaged. However, at times, the pacing felt erratic and uneven, making it challenging to fully invest in the narrative. The inconsistent rhythm hindered my ability to connect with the characters and fully immerse myself in this world.

On a positive note, I appreciate the accurate representation of Adraa on the book's cover. Her darker skin tone, as described in the story, was thoughtfully reflected, adding a layer of authenticity to the character's visual portrayal. This attention to detail deserves recognition for accurately representing diverse characters.

Unfortunately, the romantic elements, which held promise, ultimately left me wanting more. While the romance in the second book was described as exciting, I found it lacking the depth and emotional resonance I had anticipated. The connection between the characters felt underdeveloped, leading to a lack of investment in their relationship. The potential for a compelling and captivating romance was present, but it did not reach its full potential.

It's important to note that storytelling is subjective, and while "Bound by Firelight" didn't entirely meet my expectations, it may still appeal to readers who appreciate a faster-paced narrative and value accurate character representation. Despite its shortcomings, I acknowledge that different readers may find enjoyment in aspects that I personally did not connect with.

On another note, it was really weird for me to read about a MMC who was called “Jatin” because that’s my Dad’s name, so reading the romantic scenes were a little weird for me because of that. Maybe it’s better than I’m making it out to be!

In summary, "Bound by Firelight" had its strengths, such as improved pacing and accurate character representation. However, the inconsistent pacing and underdeveloped romance detracted from the overall reading experience. This installment showed glimpses of potential but fell short of fully capitalizing on them. While it may not have resonated with me, readers with different preferences may find more enjoyment in this continuation of the series.

Picking up right after the first one, this is unique magical world to keep you hooked. The world building, plot, characters everything in this one was good. This had action, suspense and adventure taking on nonstop ride.

Adraa is being accused of mastermind destruction and everyone sees her as monster. She is sent for imprisonment in Dome but is that it? Or there is more to Dome than one can see? Jatin has to break her out even when she asked him to not come for her. Will he able to save her until it's too late? Read this to find out.

Being told from both Adraa and Jatin's perspective this showed what each of them were doing to save themselves, Belwar and Naupure. They were together a complete part, complementing each other through everything.

Jatin and Adraa have come long way in this duology with all the trials their way. The character development was really good. They are couple goals. All the character casting was well done with each having part to play.

Without saying much to reveal what happened and giving any spoilers, this talks about love, friendship, power, people and family. How each one comes together in tough times. This was a great read.

Thank you @tbrbeyoundtours and @netgalley for having me on this tour and providing with arc.

"You don't get to take credit," I yell. "You did not make me stronger. This trauma didn't make me stronger. I was already strong." I take another step and my magic unfurls in smoking red tendrils. "All you've done is make me angry."

When you pick up a book you embrace the magic that is within and hope it can take you from your world and transport you into the world that is written along those pages. Not every book takes you on an adventure like this; however, this book not only sweeps you away, but makes you wish to be part of this journey over and over. The writing is smooth and effortless and flows from page to page leaving you wanting to read this book all in one sitting!
We pick up our story right where we left off from the previous book and it jumps right into the heart of the story and from there it's an action-packed page turner! There are so many highlights to this book, but to keep it spoiler-free I'll just list a couple of the aspects I enjoyed. This book has the most amazing worldbuilding and characters. The story sweeps you off your feet and makes you feel as if you're in this gorgeous story with the characters. The pacing is different from the previous book, but epic in it's own right and so enjoyable. The suspense and action throughout this book make for such a dynamic read, and you are left on the edge of your seat excited to turn the page, yet nervous at the same time!
One of the beautiful things about a great book is not only the main characters (which I'll come back to) but also the rest of the cast/side characters. The cast and crew of this book are all amazing in different ways, from their fierceness, to their loyalty, to their passion, to their humor, it was outstanding. Now to Jatin and Aadra, they are the main characters throughout this book and completely marvelous. They each grow throughout the book in many different ways, and one of the many things I loved was how you grew to love and enjoy these characters more and more as the book went on. The courage and fierceness that they portray is so cheer-worthy, you just adore them and root for them throughout this book!
The story is one of the most beautifully written books I've read in a long time, and it's intertwined with such masterful storytelling that you will want to cherish each part of this story. From moments of heartbreak to magnificent action and adventure, this book will have you laughing, crying, nervous, excited, and so many other emotions that only an incredible book can leave you with feeling!
You only get to enjoy reading a book like this for the first time once, so cherish it because you'll want to re-read this book over and over! Highest of high recommendations for this book!

Thanks to NetGalley (the publisher and author) for the ARC!
