When a squirrel chews its way through my bedroom wall, I do the first thing any single girl like me would do: run screaming out of the house to the neighbors, begging for help.
I should mention that the house next door is full of hockey players. And when I lock eyes on rough and rugged Brodie Stockhausen—who happens to be outside brooding on the porch—I’m not exactly impressed.
But I’m desperate, in a bathrobe, and need a bit of rescuing.
Soon I’m begging for his help with more than just squirrel duty and DIY projects. I want his attention and his touch—not just his friendship!
I want what every girl wants: him lying in his bed at night, so desperate for me that he’s willing to scale two stories to sneak into my window. Hey, a girl can dream…
But Brodie has a secret; one that leaves me wanting more every time we’re together but has him pulling away…

📌 Triggers: Stigma and embarrassment around being a virgin (On-page) Social awkwardness (on-page) Struggles with being Lonely/Attention seeking (on-page)
📌 No Cheating/Sharing
📌 No OWD: MMC is a virgin and has been on two dates. Farthest he's been is going down on one other girl.
📌 No OMD: FMC is not a virgin and has experience. She frequently talks about sex and previous hookups but hasn't had sex in the last few months.
📌 FMC does go on a date with MMCs hockey friend, but there was no romance involved, and they talked about MMC the entire time.
📌 No Separation/Third act breakup: They're mostly fooling around the entire book and only officially become exclusive off-page in the epilouge.
📌 Notes: Book pacing can be slow at times. For example, the first 10 chapters take course over a single night. I would have liked to have time with the MCs as an official couple. Besides that, it was nice to read about a Sexually empowered FMC. It was also nice to finally have a virgin MMC!
I feel like this is a me issue, but I may have outgrown this author. These MCS just didn't work for me, and I had issues with the herione.
I absolutely love her earlier books. How To Date A Douchebag: The Failing Hours is one of my favorite books. Unfortunately, I haven't loved a lot of stuff since.
3 I wish I loved this more stars
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book makes a great pallette cleanser as it is low-stakes/drama but still fun and spicy.
The story kicks off by everyone being scared of a squirrel in the roof, especially when he escapes through some drywall! We don't have squirrels in Australia, so the panicked commentary was just pure comedy for me! I think they're adorable personally haha
This leads to our MCs meet-cute of the MMC attempting to rescue the FMC from the little critter and failing miserably. This leads to them becoming friends, and then more than with a little push from a helpful bro.
Brodie being our #virginhero was adorable and well-written. Being 21/22 he is understandably insecure about admitting it, thinking he would be made fun of or less desirable. Virgin MMCs are a breath of fresh air, and oh so wholesome. I don't know why, I don't make the rules!
The author has written this as if you are inside their heads, and their college-level thought processes both simultaneously sold the book to me but also make it difficult at times as it felt too immature. It was at that moment that I realised I am old 🤣
To summarise, this was fun and worth the time. I enjoyed this and look forward to what I hope will next be Sully's book...
The Pucker Next Door by Sara Ney is a really sweet and amusing RomCom about the slow burn romance between Brodie Stockhausen and Lizzy Campbell. They live next door and after a hilarious incident become friends and then it becomes a will they or won’t they situation. With interventions from their friends and a very persistent squirrel, will he continue to resist her or will she break down his defences. It was refreshing to read a story where the characters are unsure and awkward at the start, became more confident as they discovered things about themselves and then finally embraced their relationship. An enjoyable funny and quirky book about Broody Brodie and Neighbour Girl - and of course Nutty!!
The house Lizzy, Jill and Bethany rent develops a major problem - squirrels in their attic! The other two girls leave and at first Lizzy enjoys being home alone but when one comes bursting through her bedroom wall, she runs next-door for help. Brodie is a talented college hockey player who is sitting on his porch minding his own business when she screams for help. Lizzy has always been intimidated by athletes and Brodie is massive but he doesn’t seem like your typical jock. She has to convinces him to help her and his reactions to her predicament are hilarious. I loved his awkwardness when they are in his room after the incident.
Brodie is a quiet, shy and unassuming guy who studies and is focused on his sport. He doesn’t date and has his reasons for living his life the way he does. It was sweet how he overthinks everything and half the time he has no idea what to say to her. She had caught his eye the day she moved in and deep down he wanted to date her but knows he would never ask. Brodie certainly does better on the ice than he does in real life. He is confident and aggressive when he plays and skates like he owns the ice, if only he could be like that with Lizzy.
It was nice to see them building a friendship and getting to know each other. The text messaging is funny as she really tries to push him out of his comfort zone. Lizzy is curious why he never flirts with her and realises she is more interested in him than he is in her. This leads to her attempting to get him to ask her out and they encounter some amusing situations. I liked how although they were such opposites, they had some things in common and neither were that experienced in dating so both learning as they went along.
Their roommates add a lot to the story with their banter, teasing and advice. First Sully then Reed pick him up on his lost opportunities with Lizzy. Sully was a true jock at first but then his thoughtfulness and concern for the couple was a revelation. Hopefully he will get his own book as he was brillant. Bethany was great as she also tried to help.
She finds him adorable and the more she is with him, the more she falls for him. He is very slow to open up to her due to his secret. Will he ever share it with her and if he does, how will she react? Be prepared for a funny and unusual epilogue which appropriately brings this story full circle.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a new Sara Ney book, I sure have missed them!
The Pucker Next Door was everything I was hoping for. It was fun, cute and easy to read.
Let me just start by saying I absolutely did NOT like Lizzy at the beginning of this book. She redeemed herself later on in my eyes but I didn’t at all like the way she was. Her whole personality at the beginning was annoying af and the things she would say (even if they were inside her head) made my blood boil. As the story progressed though her character begin to be more likeable. She was kind and caring and patient when needed and the way she was there for Brodie…yes, all the yes’!
Brodie oh my gosh! That man!!!! I fell in love with him the moment he seen the squirrel and his reaction. He’s a big strong hockey player with a sensitive side. He’s got issues and it’s affecting him in ways he wish it wouldn’t but even those don’t stop him from being the incredibly sweet and lovely man that he is. Everybody needs a Brodie in their life!
These two are complete opposites but they just prove how well opposites truly do attract.
Oh…and Nutty…I laughed, a lot! What a cutie!
That’s all I’m going to say on these, I don’t want to give out any spoilers for anyone but I will say that this author brought two amazing characters to life. Characters that’ll sit with you for a very long time.
The Pucker Next Door is a friends to lovers hockey romance. A grumpy sunshine slow burn with a will they won’t they vibe. It’s fun, adorable and leaves you with the heart eyes.
I was worried now that the author was in such a happy relationship she was not having writing time, but I am pleased to say that is not the situation and Ney is back with another hilarious sports rom-com.
All of the squirrel parts to the story had me giggling! And the bit at the end from the squirrel’s POV reminded me of Clive the cat’s POV at the end of Wallbanger. My hope is that we might get more squirrels in maybe some related stories to this one? I could see both Brodie or Lizzie’s roommates giving us some good stories. Especially Lizzie’s wingman, Sully – one of Brodie’s roomies. If anyone does a virgin hero story right, it is Sara Ney. One of the first books of hers that I read included that exact trope and so yeah, I think I really enjoy when she does it.
The author makes me connect so perfectly with characters, for instance, the fact that the way Lizzie flirted was ignoring, yeah, that’s me! And let me tell you, it has NOT worked for me, lol. And then there was texting humor when people kept saying “ha ha” in texts and Brodie told them to say lol like a normal person. I love how Lizzie would make up words like saying she wasn’t “sportsy”. And Brodie, oh Brodie, what a sweet, but bit of a grumpy guy.
This was a quick and easy read, fun, sweet, and sexy too!
Like every Sara Ney book I've read, this one was hilarious, steamy, and a fun read.
When Lizzie finds a squirrel in her bedroom, she runs out of the place. With just a robe on, she yells for help and gets the attention of a next-door neighbor.
Brodie is a hockey player who noticed Lizzie but really has no experience getting rid of a squirrel. A fact we find out when he meets said squirrel.
Lizzie ends up spending the night at Brodies place, and a new friendship is slowly born. Lizzie notices Brodie, but she's not sure what Brodie notices. We know what Brodie notices, but let's just say it gets very complicated between these two. And funny, so funny.
Brodie has a secret that keeps him from trying to take any step with Lizzie. And Lizzie (like we would be!) has no idea why Brodie is acting the way he does. And I'll say it again, so funny. Missteps abound with these two. They each have their own group of roommates who bring hilarity to the situation by "helping" these two along.
I enjoyed the read, and I can't wait to read more in this series!
This was pretty good. Definitely for a younger audience though…. Not for a woman in her 40’s. The characters are in college, so it was definitely written as such.
The MC’s were ok. Not my favorite of Sara’s though. Broody Brodie had his moments. I do love a shy and awkward hero. Loved that he was a star hockey player and still a virgin. Though I must point out he had oral before. Just not penetration. Our heroine was more experienced.
There is a cast of other characters featured here, so not sure this will turn into a series. I liked the heroine’s roommates. The other hockey players (Nextdoor) came off as gross. Sully had a couple scenes where he was decent, but not sure I’m interested enough in reading about him.
HFN ending We even get an epilogue from the squirrel 🐿️
A quick recommendation: I really liked this book. *Sport romance (hockey) *A squirrel (this character is super important) *Neighbors A good read for everyone who loves a good story.
Sara Ney never fails to have me cackling laughing.
Picture this... me dying of a sinus infection chocking on my own snot from laughing so hard. It's a disgusting but accurate image of how I spent most of my time reading this book.
Lizzy is my gal. Bless her heart. She had the hots for the buff quiet hockey guy next door. A brief squirrel infestation gave her the opening she desired, but things didn't go quite to plan. My poor gal. I LOVE HER. She was confident, funny, and sweet. She didn't give up on going after what she wanted. She had patience and showed genuine kindness when it was needed. She was the kind of character that lit up a room.
Brodie, oh my man. He was shy, unsociable, and just not sure of himself in some ways, but then there was a side to him that breathed confidence and a need to please. Innocent but filthy. Sweet but blunt and awkward. This man's internal monologue was a special place to be.
These two had me swooning, feeling all the butterfly feelings. The build-up, the hesitation. The want but the fear... the sweet moments and the hilariously awkward. I could not. They just belonged together. Lizzy was super outgoing and bubbly, where Brodie had a very small social battery and over thought everything. They balanced each other without draining one another. It was sweet. And when the fireworks went off?? LORDYYYYYY. It was magnificent.
Sully is everything. I cannot wait for his book. I loved how unbuttered he was with Brodie and his confession. And the toilet advice? We love this king.
Nutty?... his own epilogue... I CANNOT. Sara's brain must be a fun place to be. I was crying, laughing. It was everything.
ARC kindly provided for the author in exchange for an honest review
This book made me so nervous at first because things between Brodie & Lizzy were a little confusing at first, BUT both characters are charming in a very special way and they stole my heart completely, which made me really enjoy reading them, plus, I loved that Sara Ney complemented The Pucker Next Door with a character as peculiar as Sully.
Lizzy & Brodie have a peculiar story and one of the best and funniest first meetings. One of the things I liked most about their story was reading about them both falling little by little in love with each other and how clumsy they can be when they don't know what to do with what they feel, those moments were the best and the ones I enjoyed the most of these two. But what made me love the story, and Brodie & Lizzy a little more, was the way Sara handled Brodie's secret with Lizzy & Sully!.
When I first started this book, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it but it kind of grew on me. I just didn’t love it. I am new to this author and her writing style is very unique.
I graduated from college 5 years ago but I don’t remember ever sounding this child-like and cringe. Yes, I had cringe moments but not to this extent. Is this how college kids talk now? Do they constantly say blah blah blah and ha ha? I can’t complain about the lols cause I still use those pretty frequently. But is rawr still a thing?
I felt like the characters had a bit too much internal thoughts but I guess that’s how we could tell they were working through some of their doubts and insecurities.
I’m not sure how I feel about Lizzy. I felt like… she was… I don’t even know how to describe her. What I didn’t like about her initially was that she couldn’t sleep alone hence having roommates and crashing at Brodie’s when the squirrel broke through the wall. And when she was crashing at Brodie’s she didn’t want him to be uncomfortable sitting on his couch and asked him to sit on the bed with her because of her anxiety or whatever. I’d be uncomfortable too if my neighbor, who I never officially met, asked to crash at my house and I had to give up my bed for them and sleep on the couch. Then spend an awkward amount of time in a forced proximity with them, especially when they agreed to go on a date with my roommate.
But what I DID like about her was her stalker tendencies. She’d watch Brodie from the window and come up with some excuse to run into him. What I also liked about both her and Brodie was that they both read. That’s always a plus.
I liked that Brodie was innocent. “What I lack in experience, I make up for in enthusiasm, and that’s saying a lot.”
This book moved fast and slow at the same time, everything happened in like a span of a week but the book was 39 chapters long.
Overall, this book was an okay read for me. It was a bit hard for me to get through but just because it wasn’t for me, it might be for others. Like I said, the book kinda grew on me and I kinda did enjoy their dorkiness towards the end.
Thank you Wildfire Marketing Solutions and Sara Ney for providing me with this ARC for my honest review.
This was my first Sara Ney novel but I am a fan. I am a big fan. I laughed SO HARD throughout this whole book! It packed so many things I love- laughter, banter, flirty awkward text messages, and strong friend groups. I love Ney's writing style and found it easy to read and the story the perfect length.
I really liked the relationships that were built in this book. I don't know what was pre-existing since it was my first book in this world, so from my perspective I saw a great and fun group and a few set-ups for future books. I did find some of the conversations (mainly with Sully) a bit cringy, but I actually liked it. I think that was a vibe for him and I hope we see more of him and his lack of mouth control in future books. I also felt like the intent in the cringe moments were ultimately from a good place, so it just read funny to me. But it happened.
I also really liked the no 3rd act breakup and how the relationship kind of took off. I wanted more, as always, like how they worked out the final kinks to full fledged relationship and a look into their lives after the dust settled, but overall though the ebb and flow of the story was super fun.
My ick was the main plot arc focused on Brodie's virginity, and it was a bit vague throughout. Like the reason behind his choice was going to be revealed and things were going to make sense, but I was underwhelmed with this culmination. It fell a bit flat, but was such a small piece of the book it didn't really matter all that much.
Overall, the good hugely outweighed the bad and I am so looking forward to diving into Ney's backlist ASAP!!
TLDR: Easy, enjoyable read with some fun banter, a pesky squirrel, an endearingly awkward duo.
This book had me a little all over, which is probably perfect because Lizzy and Brodie definitely were. 😄
It took me a bit to warm up to Lizzy. She was assertive and no nonsense one minute, and then soft and needy the next. About midway through the book is when I finally felt like I knew her, but her dialogue often threw me for a loop. 😆
Brodie came off as a grump and my first annotation was actually for him and that I couldn’t figure out if he was shy and sweet, or an ass. But his character arc is really so important and proof that you have to get comfortable being uncomfortable to grow.
Looking back, I actually think the characterization of both is done really well. These are college students who still haven’t figured out who they really are, and lack a lot of experience. So it’s fitting that they would be finding their footing. Because of that, a large portion of their interactions together feel awkward, but they acknowledge it and the same way that it’s endearing to them, it became endearing to me.
I think Sully, one of Brodie’s roommates and teammates, was thrown in to be this typical playboy athlete, and yet I absolutely loved him from the beginning. He’s charming and honest, and just a good dude. I also highlighted a few quotes from Lizzy’s roommate Bethany. These are great side characters.
This is my first from Sara Ney, but I would love to check out her other books and would jump on Sully’s book in a heartbeat. ❤️
When Lizzy and her roommates discover there is a squirrel living in their walls, the other girls flee, but not Lizzy. Lizzy thinks she can handle it, until she can't. When she comes face to face with the little creature, she runs next door for help. Her broody neighbor is the only one home and while he isn't keen on helping, he can't let her down. Brodie has had a slight crush on Lizzy since she moved in, no matter that she doesn't know who he is, he has had his eye on her since day one. After the squirrel incident, and subsequent sleepover (where nothing happened thank you), he is unsure of what to do next. He isn't great with girls and hasn't ever even been in a relationship, but for Lizzy.. he wants more. Lizzy and Brodie begin as friends and then the slowly start evolving into more. She knows they have a strong connection, but can't understand why he won't take things further and is afraid she is being played. Their relationship can only blossom when they start communicating! This was a laugh out loud read, Sara's always are for me, and it was light and refreshing. It's a great read on a sunny spring day when you just want to kick back and smile. I wish I felt a little more of the connection between Lizzy and Brodie, but it was a cute read.
While reading this book I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy it as much but as I kept reading my mind was made up and I really did like it! Though I did feel like it started out slow and stayed that way for about 50% of the book, I am glad I kept reading! I was pleasantly surprised and truly adored the characters. It was filled with fun and quirky banter!
The two main characters Lizzy and Brodie are neighbors and they meet when Lizzy’ house becomes infested with squirrels! She has one come through the wall and into her bedroom and she runs out of the house and see Brodie next door out on the front porch minding his business. She convinces him to help her try and remove the squirrel who has taken up residency in her bedroom! Throughout the book Brodie slowly opens up to Lizzy and they start to hangout more and more! And that is the start of a cute and fun little relationship! I really loved the main characters in this book but she also wrote the side characters very well too!
I am hoping she does a book on sully as he had me laughing a lot while I was reading this! I want to see him get his happy ending as well💛
The Pucker Next Door is a new hockey romance by Sara Ney. Lizzie was home alone, lounging in her robe when a squirrel chewed through the wall in her closet and started running all over her room. She ran out the door and to her neighbor’s house. When Brodie answered the door, she begged him for assistance. They worked together to get the window open so the squirrel could exit. Lizzie stayed with him because she didn’t want to be alone in her house until the landlord arranged for pest control. Brodie had a crush on Lizzie since the day she had moved in next door, but he was an introvert, inexperienced, and had no intention of acting on his crush. Once Brodie was on Lizzie’s radar, she found herself fascinated by the man of few words. What followed was Lizzie gradually drawing Brodie out of his shell. This is a cute, light-hearted rom com. It is full of ridiculous scenarios that had me laughing out loud. Brodie was so different from the typical hockey player romance heroes, but he certainly turned over a new leaf as he gained confidence in his relationship with Lizzie. The roommates of both main characters add additional comic relief, and there are no deep topics or past traumas. This book is the perfect palate cleanser after reading a heavy book, and couldn’t have come along at a better time for me. I recommend this book for readers who enjoy hockey rom coms and are looking for something light and fun. I would like to thank The Author Agency and Sara Ney for providing this ARC in exchange for my honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
I am going to be quick with this one because well, this book was right down the middle ok for me.
The premise of this book had me hooked and I know that Sara's books end differently than most, so I had to keep that in mind when I started this book.
Brodie and Lizzy's story moves quickly but doesn't. LOL Things progress between them in a short time span, but it all happens very slowly during the 39 chapters of the book.
I love Sara, her stories and how they end or I would not be a huge fan of her writing. However, something with this particular book fell flat for me. I didn't hate it, but the story didn't have me excited to flip the pages as previous books by her have.
All in all, I am just going to go with this book was one of those "it's not the book, it's me". Maybe bad timing in my reading spell or just one of those books that didn't jive with me but will with others and that is ok.
I was skimming the story but i got bored a bit so i look through other reviews. then i came across a review wherein it was said that the hero did oral before.
well, personal preference wise, I have a serious ick in terms of virgins. Tbh this might not be for all but if a novel would have a virgin hero or heroine. why not make the most out of it. Well, Hero is said to be a virgin but already went down on a girl before soo yeah. Idk if others have some pet peeves about the v status but personally. I don't like reading a novel where it was marketted as having a virgin hero or heroine but already did oral with others. I mean, I am alright with few kisses or so. but not the oral. Auto skip. Although, the stevens guy was mentioned to be a virgin too, and if he was going to have a story, I hope he was not a half assed v haha. If not it's okay, i don't care that much. this was supposed to be the first story from the author i am supposed to read sooo. yeah. dnf
Okay, so when I started this book I wasn't exactly sure it was my jam. But it definitely grew on me! It's not like I'm head over heels, but it's definitely got its charm. Sara Ney’s writing is like that witty friend who always keeps you chuckling through the awkward moments😂
Let’s talk about that meet cute – a squirrel, a hockey player, and a dash of neighbourly chaos! Lizzie’s squirrel-induced home invasion lands her crashing at Brodie’s place, which, let’s face it, is kind of an odd situation. I mean, who kinda invites themselves over to the cute neighbour’s without really knowing each other? But hey, desperate times call for desperate measures, right?
Brodie’s first impression? Let’s just say it’s not his best foot forward. Dude comes off as aloof and, dare I say, a bit clueless. But deep down, he’s a total sweetheart, and you can’t help but root for him. And Lizzie is all sunshine and bubbly vibes, determined to snag Brodie’s attention.
Speaking of characters, can we talk about Sully, Brodie his roommate? That charming playboy had me swooning from the get-go. Who knew the classic jock stereotype could be so darn endearing?
Overall, this book was a solid read. It had its slow moments, but hey, life’s all about the journey, right? And let me tell you, by the end, I was totally invested in their dorky love story🥰
𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: 4/5⭐️ 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: 💜 Hockey romance 💜 Virgin hero 💜 Close proximity 💜 Friends to lovers 💜 PenPals next door 💜 RomCom 💜 College sports 💜 Neighbors 💜 Grumpy x sunshine 💜 Slow Burn 💜 No third act break-up
While this was cute and super easy to binge, I felt like I was being edged the entire time 🤣🤣🤣
Sure, things get steamy between Brodie and Lizzy (mans knows how to trEAT his girl right, ok?!), but Brodie's hang up on having sex and being with Lizzy because he was a virgin was a bit too drawn out. Virginity is a social construct my guy, don't let that hold you down!
They do eventually do the deed (89% in 🙄) but we don't even get to see them get together on page like wtf (RE: edging)! Just briefly mentioning she got an IUD after they talked about being 'exclusive' isn't enough!!!
Ugh! I honestly don't even know why I care so much lol
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧: - hockey romance - a squirrel invasion - neighbors/forced proximity - grumpy x sunshine - friends to lovers - virgin mmc
Very cute, swoon worthy story right here! Sara wrote a great story, threw in a funny squirrel, and you have the recipe for a great story! 5 stars for this one! Lizzie and her roommates have a problem, there is a squirrel living with them! They all leave Lizzie behind to deal with it! When the squirrel makes his appearance, she takes off running, right over to the neighbors home, where a group of hockey players live. Brodie is the lucky one who's out on the porch when she comes over, and he goes to the house to try to help her out! Their story develops from there, and it will have you laughing, swooning and just falling for these two! Sara never disappoints with her stories, I loved these two characters, I'm sure you will also! Grab this one asap!
This book, "The Pucker Next Door," is hilarious! Imagine freaking out over a squirrel and ending up at a house full of hockey players? Sign me up!
This book is a laugh-out-loud meet-cute, with a grumpy hockey dude (Brodie) and our heroine who needs his help (with more than just squirrels, wink wink).
It's got all the good stuff: romance, a little bit of mystery with Brodie's secret, and of course, hockey! Just be prepared for some familiar tropes like the "girl next door" and the forbidden love angle.
If you're looking for a fun, easy read that will make you smile, "The Pucker Next Door" might be your perfect match. Think fluffy slippers, rom-com vibes, and maybe a little bit of suspense. So grab a blanket, get comfy, and get ready to swoon!
