The Fatkini Chronicles #5

Thicker Than Water

Rate this book
Thicker than Water is filled with humor, heat, and heart. It’s about embracing life’s surprises, even when they make you wanna puke. Because the blessings that heal our hearts often are the ones we never see coming.

Plus-sized? Puh-lease. Don’t label me.

That's my new mantra. I'm Zelda Mazur Katterman, and I don't care if I don’t fit society's mold. Not when Drew and Aithan, my sexy, loving husbands, have shown me what true beauty is. Who cares about cultural “standards” when I have two amazing men by my side?

Oh, and my reflection in the mirror? I see a woman who's conquered life, love, and even those back-stabbing Greed, Spite, and Pride. I've found my happy place, wrapped in the arms of my wonderful little family.

But life has a way of dropping obstacles in our path, and this time it’s two untimely surprises that’ll change everything. For better or worse? I’ll decide that … after I stop freaking out.

If you find cussing offensive, if you skip past the sex scenes, or if the idea of multiple love interests makes you clutch your pearls (not in a good way), The Fatkini Chronicles ain’t the books for you. But if you want to see a curvy girl with a chronic illness find romance and learn to love herself with the help of two cinnamon roll heroes who are all about her happiness, then this why choose series is calling your name.

This whole series has my heart. I've read a number of 'why choose' romances, but this one hit different right from the get-go. The complexities of friends, families and ex-lovers are beautifully layered in and progressed throughout the series, and it makes for a wonderful read. I've tried to write this review in such a way that it doesn't make for spoilers. What you'll get instead, is a fangirl review of the characters and their growth throughout this five-book story arc.

Drew's back story is something I've been waiting for (and heckling the author, if I'm being honest) and Monica has finally delivered, to my vast satisfaction. Drew earned his Playboy moniker from Zelda, but this man, this confident and generous presenting man has a very bruised past. How wonderful to see that uncovered and dealt with. For a man who had such a traumatic upbringing, it seemed entirely fitting that he found himself in a nurturing poly relationship. He gets what he needs, gives his everything, and Aithan is there to provide what Drew fears he can't, or doesn't deserve. It's just awesome.

Aithan's backstory gets more attention too, and it's fascinating to see a character who grew up in a poly relationship and then found one of his own. His mother is a very complicated character, more high maintenance and superficial (at least when it comes to looks) than Zelda, which now that I write that, explains why he was attracted to Zelda in the first place. He's grown up open-minded and open-hearted, but is attracted to more than just the superficial - which is exactly what Zelda needed to soothe her own insecurities.

Zelda's family on the other hand. Hoo boy. Her narcissistic sister is, and always will be, a massive piece of work that I'm always going to snark at. Their mother has a massive blind spot (I'm guessing mum-guilt) that makes her insist on playing happy families, but c'mon, the damage that Greer has done is maddening! The fact that Zelda can stand her ground and now, thanks for finding the support of Drew and Aithan, knows her worth and won't settle for anything less. Why are men like these fictional? It's so unfair! *huff*

Then there's Livi, a character who has been shopping on the karma credit plan (buy now, pay forever), and has finally fallen into a pit of her own making. It was no narcissistic collapse, but having to participate in an environment with people that she could not control was the cherry on top for me. The moment at the end of the proceedings where she's having a hissy fit, and Drew gives her a passing glance before turning back to pick up the conversation he was having with Zelda was a gentle little moment of closure I adored.

This series has always been more than the power trio though. The supporting characters have their own story arcs as well which elevates them from being merely two dimensional. Tobias and his progression from mourning to moving into a new relationship is sweetly done. Aithan's family are like rough and tumble puppies who won't hesitate to protect - the baby shower is a spectacular example of that. Seb, the character from Thinly Veiled who had all the markers of being an overindulged pretty-boy has a surprising redemptive thread On the basis of his interactions with the family in this book, and the advance peak at the next book, I'm prepared to give him a leave pass. I think there's hope for that man ...

And before I forget, the explanation of the phrase that became the title of this book is gorgeous. I hadn't looked into the origin of the saying before, but it's perfect.

I received an ARC of this book, and have also purchased it outright.

Now, Monica, WRITE FASTER.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I had several people ask if I was having a hard time with this book because it took me DAYS to read it…uh no ma’am!!! I’m learning that when I know a series is coming to an end I savor the last book….I don’t want it to be over/end & I drag it out as long as I possibly can because I know at 80% I’m going to fly through it till I’m finished….
I started reading the series because the title of the prequel (Thick as a Brick) & the first book (Fatkini) caught my attention….Im so glad it did….I went on a wild ride with Zelda, Drew & Aithan & loved it….those 3 will stay with me for a long time….
Zelda was pretty insecure when the series started but with the help of Drew & Aithan she busted right out of her insecurities & never looked back
Drew had his own demons to conquer & by this book we learned how truly awful his early life had been….but don’t forget after the storms pass you get a rainbow….Drew definitely got his rainbow….Livi (his ex) got a spoonful of Karma….we even learn what really happened to him as a child….silver linings
Then there’s Aithan….his life seemed pretty picture perfect….he conquered most of his demons early in the series but there was still one more dragon to slay….this time it was his moms turn to be the dragon slayer & just wow…..
This is a 5 book series plus a prequel novella to start it off….it definitely needs to be read in order….you learn so much from this series….Zelda has Graves’ disease…we go on her health journey with her…Drew is an author with a troubled past….we get in on his journey for answers with him….Aithan came from a polyamory’s upbringing so he had no problem being in one….his only issues were being in the wrong place at the wrong time & some older women in his life didn’t always have his best interests in mind
Of course we get some side characters….
Zelda’s parents & sister Greer….the sister could have jumped off a cliff at one point & id have been ok with it…
Drew’s “parents” Emerson & Jules….those two were fun….then there’s Drew’s ex Livi….I wanted to smack her at least once or twice
Aithans best friend Tobias & his daughter Mari….of course we also get Aithans family….they are a hoot….even his brother Sebastian turned out to be not so bad…
Give this series a read….at times you are in for a wild ride but I loved it!!!
Oh & I didn’t miss the first chapter of the next book/spinoff….maybe we will get to see Sebastian have his redemption story

A fantastic MFM romance series. It is a treat to spend so much time with lovable characters and getting a real in-depth feel for each of them, their personalities, backgrounds and how they are moving forward together. As a person who also suffers with thyroid issues I love the representation and the insight these books give. I loved everything about this book but the stand out is the the love, support and romance from the two MMCs. I also have a husband who has C-PTSD and I love the way that the author has portrayed this throughout the series. I shed more than a few tears but I have also laughed and swooned. I love this series.

I binge read this series. The character development was awesome…I really connected with these people and couldn’t wait for the end. The plots kept it interesting with no lags. I am just sorry it is done!

Lovely Wrap Up

A lovely ending to the Mazur-Katterman family’s story. Glad they all got some closure on issues they needed it for and that they got their little love Rip. I’m sure they’ll add to their brood.

A lot going on..

For me, I could not get with the characters of Tobias and Jill. All of his references to her being like juju. I thought he said or it was written that he had his priority of Mari and couldn't be with Zelda because she reminded him of juju. Why, then did he get with Jill and "fall in love" so quickly. There was no transition for amara.. one day, she didn't like to be with her, and the next, she's loving jill-y. When did that happen. Then, in less time than it took for zel to have a baby, they are moving in with Jill.
The lawsuit with olivia was predictable, but the writing was funny. I did like all the side stories or back stories that were discovered.
The lady being paypig was weird... But I guess his mother handled things.... well, the mom, dad's, and sister.... wild!!!
His mom, scarlet, and that whole ordeal was interesting...
I do hope the drew gets zel pregnant now....

The characters are great. I enjoyed following a long with them, enough so, that I will continue with the series to see where it goes. But I almost put this down when there were point of view (POV) changes. It was very annoying. The author needs to either make the whole book 1st POV or the whole book 3rd POV (I hope not, as I don’t like 3rd person and would probably quit a 3rd person book). The FMC (female main character) is all in 1st person, but the MMC’s (main male characters) are all in 3rd person. Makes for very confusing chapters mixed into the rest of the book. I don’t think I would read any other series by this author due to that. She definitely writes compelling characters though.

Good

The series has a lot of positive messages, intense drama, invisible illness, interesting plot, plenty of spice, and an exciting dynamic that just works for the MMCs and FMC almost instantly. It was written pretty well, though the POV change without the narrative changing to reflect that was a little weird. You’d go from narrating as first person from Zelda to third person as anyone else’s pov. Didn’t wow me and I skipped a lot, but it’s interesting.

Loved the series

This was a good series. I’ve read all except the new one with Sebastian. The character arc for everyone was done very well. Family forgiveness redemption relationship grief childhood trauma sibling relationship. This was intense and the description of a life in a polyamorous relationship was good also. I recommend to 18+ due to mature content and trigger warnings.

It had some good parts

I do overall like this series. To be honest this was not the best book out of series. I liked finding out all of Drew's family stuff, Aithan's mom, and of course the baby. But this book drags..... too much fluff and just wasn't as exciting as the rest and the ending was abrupt especially for the ending...

Thank you Monica for allowing me to come on this journey over the past year. I've adored all of these books and this was a wonderful way to end the series! One day I'm gonna have to get physical copies to do a reread and annotate for sure!

Thicker Than Water

Book 5 has lots of emotions along with a little spice and lots of romance. I enjoy how the main 3 are always supportive and don’t constantly go on a roller coaster of fighting and making up.

Best of the series

Definitely a case of save the best for last.
This whole series would’ve been better as 2 or 3 books at most. This one wraps up a lot frustrating loose ends that dragged out way too long.

Such a good series

I enjoyed reading this series so much. Zelda, Drew and Aithan and such great characters. I enjoy all the supporting characters too. The only thing that would have made these books better is all the recipes mentioned of the yummy food Zelda made!
