《구의 증명》 《단 한 사람》 《해가 지는 곳으로》 등을 쓰고 2023년 〈홈 스위트 홈〉으로 이상문학상을 수상하며 사랑의 다채로운 면면을 재발견해온 최진영의 신작 소설 《오로라》가 위즈덤하우스의 단편소설 시리즈 위픽으로 출간되었다. 2022년 제주 생활을 시작한 작가가 “조커 카드로 아껴두겠다고 다짐했었”던 제주도를 처음으로 배경 삼은 작품이기도 하다.

제주는 아는 사람이 아무도 없는 곳, 자유를 느낄 수 있는 곳, 스스로를 죄는 규칙에서 벗어날 수 있는 곳이다. 죄책감 대신 자유, 진실 대신 거짓을 택하고 ‘오로라’로 다시 태어나기를 다짐한 ‘너’를 비웃듯 발코니에서 죽은 새가 발견된다. 봄이 오면 녹아 사라질 걸 알면서도 눈사람을 만드는 마음으로 한 사람의 손을 잡는다. 종잡을 수 없는 겨울 제주의 날씨만큼이나 변화무쌍한 사랑이 날개를 펼치고 날아오른다.

About the author

Choi Jin-young began writing twenty years ago. She is now one of Korea’s foremost novelists, having amassed several prestigious prizes, including the Yi Sang Literary Award, Hankyoreh Literary Award and Shin Dong-yup Literary Prize.

Her record-breaking novella, Hunger, has sold half a million copies and been translated into 10 languages.

somewhere between hong sang soo and no other choice. did not like it at first but it grew on me (also very short). always appreciate her cold and incisive tone on the warmest topics

I truly loved her other book „구의 증명“. Kind of disappointed of this one. A short story about love and how to hide it while it tears your soul apart. The author’s writing style is still intense and I love to read her lines. But the story itself was unfortunately too weak and I can’t remember much from reading this book.

Five stars 를 자주 하진 않는다. 하지만 이 책을 읽었던 장소와 공간의 힘이 컸었다고 생각한다. 내가 좋아하는 오트밀크 라떼, 햇빛이 잘 들어오는 평일 오후에 재즈 음악을 들으면서 한 자리에서 다 읽었다. 읽는데에는 45 분정도 걸리는 단편 소설이다. 최진영 작가의 다른 작품도 꼭 찾아서 읽어보아야지.
