"I don't think it's a failing on your part that you're not everyone's preference," he insisted, shaking my hand to firm up his point. "You're so intelligent there's few people you can talk to without making them feel like absolute fools. Not everyone is equipped to handle all the ruthless competence in on person. And why should you have to accommodate their lesser minds?…"
"I'm not a fan of heights. You know I won't ride on your --"
She cut me off with one threatening finger raised to me lips. Her scent was strong coming off er skin, citrus and herbs. "It's a powerful artifact. Don't you dare disrespect me and call it a--"
"--broom!" I hadn't intended to be contrary, but then she'd gone and goaded me, hadn't she.
"I was getting somewhere with him," Quiet snapped. "Do you have to throw him like he's a sack of potatoes every time I question him?"
I gave her words some thought, chewing on the inside of my cheek. "Yes," I drawled. "Yes, I do."
"Why?"
My answering smirk stretched my lips compulsively. "You called me 'your vampire' a few moments ago. I felt obligated to act in a befitting manner."
I patted the top of her head sympathetically. "You did all the hard work translating it. Well done you. Impressive, that brain of yours is. So impressive it gets right in the way sometimes."
"But the ciphers," she said, pouting. "I was going to get to use math."
"Chin up," I said, voice wobbling. "I'm sure this horrid castle will throw many more complicated tricks and traps and trials at us before we're through."
Her frown faltered, lips quirking. "It better."
His eyes dragged over my face like he was trying to read invisible words written across my forehead. His brow knitted closer and closer together. "Did I hurt your feelings?"
"Of course you did, you ratbag! No one wants to be reminded of how unlikable they are to everyone else."
"Well, forgive me." His mouth gaped a moment and his grip loosened, slipping down from my wrist to hold my hand apologetically. "I didn't now you had feelings."
"Well, I do," I snarled. "And your'e making me want to get away from you even more right now."
"Listen here, Quiet. I had no idea you cared what other people thought about you. Why should you? Other people are idiots. I thought we agreed on that."
He surprised a chuckle out of me...
"I don't think it's a failing on your part that your'e not everyone's preference," he insisted, shaking my hand in his to firm up his point. "You're so intelligent there's few people you can talk to without making them feel like absolute fools. Not everyone is equipped to handle all that ruthless competence in one person. And why should you have to accommodate their lesser minds? It doesn't bother me if you don't like smiling for no reason or you prefer to speak in a manner that's more efficient, with less flowery, feel-good nonsense. So what if you're bossy because you know better than everyone else? Yes, you're unlikable. But who cares? They can fuck off."
"I want you for you," I said sternly, shifting in closer, crowding her space. "The sound of your voice, the turn of your mouth, the fall of your hair, the storm in your eyes - my good witch, there isn't a single thing about you that I don't find superior in every way, and it confounds me that a woman of your caliber, your intelligence, your aptitude, hasn't figure that out already on her own. It is because of those things that I find your blood appealing. Didn't the way we ended last night tell you this already? Your kiss was all I needed. It was never my intent to create another mystery for you."
Her mouth fell open. She closed it quickly and swallowed. "I need words like that from you, Rorick," she said. "Don't assume I'll be able to interpret your actions, and I'll try harder to do the same... and in a less bossy fashion."
I frowned at her. "Less bossy? Don't do that." Lowering my head, I whispered in her ear, "I like it when you boss me."
"Then it's settled," she said.
