Coven of Ill Repute

Rate this book
Trapped in a haunted castle with my immortal enemy.

The Duke of the Damned is dead. When my coven is blamed for his murder, I’m desperate to clear their name before my sisters are arrested and I lose the only family I’ve ever known. But I only have one week to find the culprit, and the new heir to the duchy is none other than Detective Liam Rorick, my enigmatic ex-partner and archenemy.

It doesn’t matter if Rorick is a competent investigator. He’s the most cantankerous vampire I’ve ever had the displeasure of knowing. There’s a reason I swore I’d never work with him again. And yet that’s exactly what I have to do.

Now we’re trapped together in the malevolent castle he’s just inherited, trading insults and fighting magical monsters to survive. I want nothing more than to go back to pretending he doesn’t exist . . . but Rorick protects me like I’m precious and keeps looking at me like he regrets our past.

With each close call and each revealed clue, it becomes harder to fight our undeniable connection. But even the castle’s hungriest creatures aren't as frightening as opening my heart to the one man capable of devouring it whole.

Talk about creating an atmospheric setting. Coven of Ill Repute brings a murder mystery, a castle with a foreboding vibe that can back it up with actual danger, former partners who've let an event a year ago fester and destroy a relationship now trapped together, and some entities and events that ratchet up the spooky and creepy meter. This author's books have been hit and miss for me, but I found this one to be fascinating between the mystery, the characters, the relationship, and the shifting nature of all of the above. Also, please mind the trigger warnings and seriously, if you do not like insects or clowns, you should consider skipping this one.

Rorick (H) is called to his cousin's castle by Quiet (h) because of a murder that she wants his assistance on. Neither has spoken to the other for a year because of something dreadful that happened between them that we can guess, but don't know for certain for a bit into the book. Rorick's a vampire who investigates on consults and Quiet is a witch who also does consults, but who's very tied to her coven, which is now threatened as the victims are a vampire duke and a witch, so the police believe a witch is at fault. Alllllll the tension y'all. You have tension from Rorick's regrets and remorse, Quiet's hurt, and the mystery of what the hell is going on in this crazy house. I adored Quiet and Rorick's banter though, at first it's more barbed, but it's still delightful and it does become more teasing and less fraught as the story progresses.

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama, h was experienced and H wasn't experienced with the full deed but had some experience (personally, I wasn't a fan of the way his experience was described, which is related to his feeding, since there's a moment where the h clearly feels jealousy and then additionally, the first physically intimate moment between them was so similar to his usual activity - it's a blip that won't bother most readers and the book is worth reading even if you're sensitive to that sort of scenario like I am imo).

I can't really say anything about what goes down on the inside without spoilers (please note: there is violence, descriptions of supernatural spooky creatures, uh dead bodies, mentions of children being in danger, and some other stuff). On a lighter note, I never thought I'd get choked up about a spider and a moth. This has been added to my cute animal sidekick shelf because of the very special insects. I'll also say that the burn is slow and that these two idiots (said lovingly) do initiate physical intimacy before getting all their ducks in a row about where they stand, but that resulting angst doesn't drag on thankfully, they don't want to end up back where they've been for a year, leaving feelings and words unsaid. While they're trapped in the castle, they also manage to fall back into working as a team, have some super sweet moments, learn to trust each other again, and do all this in a believable (if quick) manner. They make such a genuinely fun pair who round each other out, but also there's the emotional intimacy and connection present too, they just had to face it.

The ending does tie up the full plot of the mystery of what's happening at the castle. I guessed part of it and the other part was a shock. Our pair end on a HFN note, as a couple, and then a breadcrumb is dropped to lead in to the next book (I believe this is a duet for this couple at least, though Quiet has a coven of briefly introduced witches, each with their own unique personality and speciality just saying). I'm a little hesitant about book 2 (read: worried the next one will be even creepier and may hit a trigger of mine) but I'm going to continue and I'm hoping we get a HEA at the end of that installment. Along with wrapping up the mystery they'll be working on next of course.

This is a fantasy/detective story/romance.

The two main characters fell out about a year ago but, after a little fussing, we quickly find out that they both have missed the other. While I categorized this as enemies to lovers, it's not quite true. This is friends fall out but are thrust together to work it out with forced proximity when they work to solve a mystery together.

This was a lot of fun. I loved the two and the adventure a lot; however, I was a little annoyed with one element of the romance. While the hero hasn't had intercourse with any women in the past, he has used a prostitute for their blood and then given oral. I hate this detail and wish the author didn't include it.

This review was originally posted on Books of My Heart

Review copy was received from Publicity team. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Coven of Ill Repute is the first story in a continuing series that is a little bit detective novel and a little bit gothic romance between a witch and a vampire. This is full of funky happenings in a cursed Castle as Quiet and Rorick try to solve a murder mystery.

Quiet and Rorick were partners over a year ago. But they had a falling out after an unfortunate event. He is a vampire; she is a witch; you might be able to guess what happened. They are again thrown together as Quiet only has a week to solve a double homicide and save her Coven of Witches from being expelled from the town. Rorick has a detective agency and has been hired by the constabulary to assist in the investigation.

One problem, once they went into the Castle it appears there is no way out and they will be stuck together until they figure out how and why the castle is curse and hopefully who killed the two people in it.

I had such a good time with this book. Quiet's menagerie of insect helpers was unusual and so interesting to the story. How they assisted her in her various parts of the investigation was so inventive. Rorick also was completely interesting as a character. A Vampire detective, who doesn't really remember his life before he was turned.  I enjoyed the relationship between Quiet and Rorick as they try to work out some things from the past and find their way to be together. The reader can see right away why these two are perfect for each other and the slow burn as the churn themselves together was wonderful to be a part of.

"I don't think it's a failing on your part that you're not everyone's preference," he insisted, shaking my hand to firm up his point. "You're so intelligent there's few people you can talk to without making them feel like absolute fools. Not everyone is equipped to handle all the ruthless competence in on person. And why should you have to accommodate their lesser minds?…"

The ghosts, things that go bump in the night and all of the other magical parts of this book were interesting and some extremely unique. I will never look at clowns the same way again. There is a really great twist at the end that left me reeling a bit just to be the cherry on top of the story.

I can wait to see what is in store for these characters next!

"I'm not a fan of heights. You know I won't ride on your --"

She cut me off with one threatening finger raised to me lips. Her scent was strong coming off er skin, citrus and herbs. "It's a powerful artifact. Don't you dare disrespect me and call it a--"

"--broom!" I hadn't intended to be contrary, but then she'd gone and goaded me, hadn't she.

Coven of Ill Repute delivers exactly what a gothic paranormal romance should: a haunted castle dripping with menace, a reluctant partnership between sworn enemies, and a slow‑burn tension that coils tighter with every chapter. It’s atmospheric, sharp, and deliciously eerie — the kind of story that wraps you in shadows and refuses to let go.

The Duke of the Damned is dead, and the blame lands squarely on the wrong doorstep. With her coven accused of murder, our witch heroine has one week to clear their name before her sisters are dragged away in chains. The last person she wants to work with is Detective Liam Rorick — her ex‑partner, her immortal enemy, and the most infuriating vampire she’s ever known. Unfortunately, he’s also the new heir to the duchy and the only one who can help her unravel the truth.

Their forced reunion is prickly, tense, and laced with the kind of chemistry that makes denial pointless. They trade insults like weapons, clash at every turn, and still manage to protect each other when the castle’s malevolent magic turns deadly. The setting itself becomes a character — a brooding, hungry presence filled with secrets, illusions, and monsters that stalk the halls.

Rorick’s protectiveness complicates everything. He watches her like she matters, regrets their past with a quiet intensity, and shields her as if she’s something precious. Every close call chips away at the walls between them, and the enemies‑to‑lovers pull becomes impossible to ignore. The danger outside is terrifying, but the danger of opening her heart to him might be worse.

The pacing is tight, the mystery unfolds with satisfying twists, and the gothic atmosphere is rich without ever feeling heavy. It’s romantic, eerie, and full of that “just one more chapter” energy that keeps you reading long after you meant to stop.

If you’re into haunted‑castle gothic romance, paranormal danger, and enemies who can’t stay away from each other no matter how hard they try, Coven of Ill Repute is a gripping start to a series with plenty of dark magic still to come.

➕ What I liked :

Tall heroine.👍

A heroine and hero that are more or less the same height.👍👏
(Very unusual in the Romance genre and almost non-existent in the Fantasy Romance and Paranormal Romance genres.)

A heroine and hero that are more or less the same age.👍
(Both their supernatural age and what age they look like or seem like …. their supernatural age is 70+ … but they look like 30+….. so Not a hero or heroine that is hundreds or thousands years older than the other.)

Some parts of the plot was a little interesting.

Experienced heroine.

Inexperienced hero.

➖ What I disliked:

Lacking and forced/monotonous romantic build-up and chemistry.

Uninteresting and bland main characters.

Cringey.

Lackluster steam.

The world-building was rather lacking and it felt like so much was missing and left out… that if just more depth and development was added it most likely would have helped set up the story…. But the style of writing was also rather verbose in some ways…. So it was wordy but not enough said.

Confusing…. And in some places all over the place.

Immature main characters… their banter and bickering was just OTT and annoying.

🫸😣🫷🙅‍♂️🙉The male narrator/male voice actor is horrendous and jarring… his voice acting is emotionless...but also forced and almost shrill.

Thank you to S.L. Prater for granting me an arc.

I was a little worried going into this book, I haven't had the best of luck with arcs lately, so I worried that this book would be another flop. I can safely say it wasn't. Quiet and Rorick's chemistry jumped off the pages. It was so obvious how the two felt about each other. I loved their witty banter.

The book is deliciously gothic, with coffin-dwellers and shape-shifting monsters hiding around every corner, trying to devour Quiet and Rorick and disrupt their investigation into the death of Rorick's cousin, Alex and Quiet's coven sister, Penance. It's a brilliant read and the plot twist at the end is genius. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

This was a really fun read. A Gothic murder mystery, on the cozy side, set in a haunted castle. Expect lots of specters, scary ass clowns (oh yay), and wonderful magical insects. Just a delightful Gaslamp Fantasy.

Quiet is a witch that is tasked with solving the murder of her sister witch and a vampire. She gets help from former partner and vampire, Liam, who she is estranged from because of some painful events in the past. The banter between these two is so good. It’s funny and snarky and oh so entertaining. It’s a super slow burn, and when that spice hits 🥵 It hits. So good. Vampire lovin’ 🤩

And the cherry on top is that the whodunnit is very well done. I had no idea. Like none whatsoever. So that’s a win for me. Good read, looking forward to future adventures with these two.

S.L. Prater never misses. This is a gothic romance in a haunted, body horror castle in which two former private eye partners get together to solve a murder mystery. Prater's writing is atmospheric and immersive, drawing readers into the malevolent atmosphere of the castle and the many mysteries that lie within its walls. The mansion itself almost becomes a character in its own right. From its eerie corridors to its hidden secrets, the castle provides a rich and atmospheric backdrop for the unfolding drama.

Quiet the witch, who uses insects to aid in her magic, is desperate to clear her coven's name after they are blamed for the murder of the vampiric Duke of the Damned. The other victim is a member of her coven and the prime suspect. With only a week to find the real culprit, she must reluctantly team up with her enigmatic ex-partner Rorick, who is now the heir to the duchy.

What unfolds is a thrilling tale of suspense and intrigue as the pair navigate the treacherous castle, facing magical and strange monsters and unraveling clues to uncover the truth behind the dual murder. The banter between Quiet and Rorick crackles with tension and chemistry. Their banter is top notch and they bicker like an old married couple in the best way.

This was incredibly fun. But let me tell you, it's got clowns. Which I did not looove (shudder), but we got through. And it's worth it. This review is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and it is voluntary.

A super fun gothic murder mystery in a seriously haunted house, starring a witch heroine with a variety of adorable spider and moth helpers and a vampire detective hero - neither of whom has any clue of how to handle the fact that they’re in love. I enjoyed the mystery and did not see the twist coming (but it was foreshadowed perfectly)!

Wow what spooky ride!

It’s no secret that I love SL Praters writing style. It always feels like a warm hug! But this is the first time I’m reading her gothic romance and it was fantastic!

Rorick and Quiet were reluctant partners who investigates various crime cases until a fallout a year before. They are unknowingly paired for a new murder case and promptly get stuck in an ancient castle and things start going horribly wrong.

This book was both spooky and creepy and I loved that. It also had an amazing banter (after a long time). I loved both Rorick and grumpy but powerful Quiets equation. They both were brilliant and powerful and had a strong connection. Add in the various adorable ( I can’t believe I’m calling spiders adorable) assistants of Quiet, the book unputdownable.
I loved that many new and variety supernatural beings were introduced. They added so much flavour to the story.
And the twist, THE TWIST- it blew my mind.
Can’t wait to read the second book.

P.s I loved every single bit of this book.

—vamp x witch.
—ex partners.
—forced Proximity.
—V hero.
—Grumpy x Grumpier
—creepy creatures and spooky castle.

"I was getting somewhere with him," Quiet snapped. "Do you have to throw him like he's a sack of potatoes every time I question him?"

I gave her words some thought, chewing on the inside of my cheek. "Yes," I drawled. "Yes, I do."

"Why?"

My answering smirk stretched my lips compulsively. "You called me 'your vampire' a few moments ago. I felt obligated to act in a befitting manner."

I will forever be a sucker for a good gothic romance, but you know what I hadn't encountered until this book? A cozy gothic romance. Not that I'm surprised, because S.L. Prater's books are always the embodiment of cozy vibes - even when danger lurks and the banter is damn-near constant.

Coven of Ill Repute wasn't anything like I thought it would be! In fact, I went into this book expecting something totally different from what I got, but not at all in a bad way. I guess I've just gotten so use to my gothic romances being more dark and moody, and while this book definitely has some of the classic tropes and hallmarks of a classic gothic story, it has Steph's trademark coziness to it that I have come to love and adore.

Coven of Ill Repute at its heart is a murder mystery. Ex-partners/detectives, a vampire and a witch, team up to solve the double homicide of some mutual acquaintances, but they have a limited window with which to solve the murders, and the cursed castle that they're now stuck in and the creatures feeding on the darkness within aren't exactly eager to let them leave.

I patted the top of her head sympathetically. "You did all the hard work translating it. Well done you. Impressive, that brain of yours is. So impressive it gets right in the way sometimes."

"But the ciphers," she said, pouting. "I was going to get to use math."

"Chin up," I said, voice wobbling. "I'm sure this horrid castle will throw many more complicated tricks and traps and trials at us before we're through."

Her frown faltered, lips quirking. "It better."

I really enjoyed the chemistry and camaraderie between Quiet and Rorick, especially after the misunderstandings and assumptions of the year prior were finally laid to rest so these two dummies could finally just surrender to the fact that they're in love with each other. The lack of communication trope is strong with these two, but it never gets to the point of it being off-putting - not an easy feat to pull off, imho.

Quiet is a bit prickly, snarky, and bossy - and given her history, that fierce sense of independence and general emotional constipation made sense - but she's a clever witch and very endearing. Her entourage of insect familiars - moths, spiders, bees, ants, beetles, etc. - were also surprisingly adorable in a creepy witchy sort of way? It's hard to explain. Let's just say that Stephanie managed to make me emotional over a moth and a spider. I know that sounds crazy, but read the book - it'll make sense.

Then we have Rorick. He's the charming cinnamon roll sunshine half of our grumpy/sunshine duo, and there's not much else to say outside of that I really enjoyed his character. He bumbles and fumbles his way through his feelings (considering the context, it makes total sense), but when he gets there, man always sticks the landing.

His eyes dragged over my face like he was trying to read invisible words written across my forehead. His brow knitted closer and closer together. "Did I hurt your feelings?"

"Of course you did, you ratbag! No one wants to be reminded of how unlikable they are to everyone else."

"Well, forgive me." His mouth gaped a moment and his grip loosened, slipping down from my wrist to hold my hand apologetically. "I didn't now you had feelings."

"Well, I do," I snarled. "And your'e making me want to get away from you even more right now."

"Listen here, Quiet. I had no idea you cared what other people thought about you. Why should you? Other people are idiots. I thought we agreed on that."

He surprised a chuckle out of me...

"I don't think it's a failing on your part that your'e not everyone's preference," he insisted, shaking my hand in his to firm up his point. "You're so intelligent there's few people you can talk to without making them feel like absolute fools. Not everyone is equipped to handle all that ruthless competence in one person. And why should you have to accommodate their lesser minds? It doesn't bother me if you don't like smiling for no reason or you prefer to speak in a manner that's more efficient, with less flowery, feel-good nonsense. So what if you're bossy because you know better than everyone else? Yes, you're unlikable. But who cares? They can fuck off."

What else can I say about this book without spoiling anything? Hmmm... the whodunit mystery of it all definitely surprised me. There's a twist at the end that totally took me aback, but once all the pieces fall into place, it made sense and I found it compelling! I also appreciated that Steph left us with a few unanswered questions for future books! There's still some mysteries that need solving and I can't wait to see where we go from here! Especially since we got a nice peek at some of the other witches in Quiet's coven. There's a great cast of characters there to pull from as future leads and I am so excited!

TL;DR: really enjoyed this book. It's a fairly quick read with a solid mystery, plenty of paranormal goodness and gothic vibes to satiate my voracious appetite, and all of the cozy vibes I've come to expect from Stephanie.

Definitely recommend this as a great weekend read!

"I want you for you," I said sternly, shifting in closer, crowding her space. "The sound of your voice, the turn of your mouth, the fall of your hair, the storm in your eyes - my good witch, there isn't a single thing about you that I don't find superior in every way, and it confounds me that a woman of your caliber, your intelligence, your aptitude, hasn't figure that out already on her own. It is because of those things that I find your blood appealing. Didn't the way we ended last night tell you this already? Your kiss was all I needed. It was never my intent to create another mystery for you."

Her mouth fell open. She closed it quickly and swallowed. "I need words like that from you, Rorick," she said. "Don't assume I'll be able to interpret your actions, and I'll try harder to do the same... and in a less bossy fashion."

I frowned at her. "Less bossy? Don't do that." Lowering my head, I whispered in her ear, "I like it when you boss me."

"Then it's settled," she said.

Thank you to BookSirens and S.L. Prater’s team for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

What a fun read! I loved the entire concept of it all - a witch and vampire detective with a complicated history get paired up to solve a murder while stuck in a haunted castle. The forced proximity, witty banter, insect companions, all of it was just so enjoyable. I loved the fact that literally everything was haunted in some way, and really kept you guessing throughout!

I was hoping for a bit more spookiness, I felt like it was a bit more cozy than expected, but it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing! Just unexpected. It wrapped up in a way that was satisfying but still left some questions to be answered in the next book!

The best thing that I can say about this book is that it was creative. The name of the female protagonist being Quiet kept pulling me out of the world to reread to check if I had misread something. The spice was like a 7/10 but there were only like two good scenes which made me disappointed. Prater kept all of the information until the last approximately two chapters which made it very hard to get into the book. I felt like there was a lot more information, in terms of world building, that I wanted to know, and would have probably helped set up the story, that was just missing.

Overall, I'm not mad that I read it, but there are much better books out there.

DNF 39% there were parts of this I absolutely loved. But I could not care less about a circus, and the rest wasn’t enough to keep me intrigued with that obviously being a huge part of the plot as we continued. CW spiders and clowns and being buried alive all in the part I read. So this book is not great for phobias I would imagine. Also this is my second dnf by this author which I usually don’t give a second chance. I will say this one was better written. I just hate the circus trope.

I received an ARC for an honest review.

I wanted to like this book. I love the concept, the characters were mildly interesting but I DNFd at 75%.

It was just chaotic. I thought it was my mindset to reading, so I'd put it down, come back. I found myself going back and being confused by what was happening. There was just too much and not enough at the same time for me.

Are you looking for a cosy gothic romance with an intriguing whodunnit plot that’s underlined with sweet romance? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Plot:
Rorick has been summoned by his ex-detective partner, Quiet, the witch to solve a murder that’s taken place.

He agrees, because how could he ever say no to bossy Quiet but doesn’t realise what he’s actually signed up for until the castle he enters to solve the murder decides to come alive and lock both him and Quiet in.

As the castle walls start to rot and paintings come alive, Rorick and Quiet work together to solve the riddles and save themselves.

My thoughts:
I had no idea what to expect, a little like Rorick entering that castle, when I started this book. I’ve been following SL Prater from very early on and absolutely love her lyrical style and was very excited to see her take on vampires. Clearly I wasn’t disappointed.

If there is one thing you can rely on with Prater books, it’s that her characters will be stubborn, head strong and secretly big softies inside. Another Prater trope? Falling totally in love with creatures you never thought you would. In this case I’m talking about:

🦋 Moths
🕷️ Spiders
🐝 Bees
🐜 Ants

You see where I’m going with this? 🤣 to be honest, last time it was a tree and I had cried. So nothing surprises me anymore!

Really interested to see where the next book will take us. Loved the twist at the end and can’t wait to see more of Quiet and Rorick in the future.

I was disappointed here - it felt like the book started in the middle of the story. This could have been really good with more worldbuilding and background on the characters. I wasn't invested in the mystery because honestly it felt like I started at chapter 20.
Not sure I will continue this series

🌶🌶

If someone asked me for a wishlist for my perfect book this would tick all the boxes. A true blend of Sherlock Holmes vibes with a vampire Duke and an entomologist witch that have a history they need to work through in order to solve a crime in a haunted manor - this book has it all.

I absolutely adored Quiet and Rorick with my whole heart. You really truly get to know them so intrinsically as the book goes on. With Quiet’s bossiness and Rorick’s protective nature they make for an amazing and amusing team.

The murder mystery aspect was spot on and working our way through the evidence and puzzles meant that this book had my academic and scientist brain fully hooked.

Also, how could I forget the incredible world building. I would expect nothing less from S.L. Prater but she has truly outdone herself here, not only was the Manor wonderfully crafted but we get a glimpse of the wider world and I can't wait to explore it further. The magical creatures were absolutely top tier, Anita and Gilbert were such phenomenol and cute sidekick additions to the story.

This book truly gave me cozy murder mystery vibes alongside the romance aspect. Also, it truly is the little creative bits that make it even better for me, like garlic and a kiss for luck - spellbinding.

Coven of Ill Repute, Book 1 in the Eternal Enemies series by S. L. Prater, is a book I didn't know I needed in my life, and now I desperately wait for its sequel. This is a gaslight, gothic fantasy with a mystery twist, and I've devoured every single page.

I loved our detective duo, former partners forced to work together again to solve a mysterious crime in a haunted castle that does its best to throw any obstacle possible at them. They need to navigate their broken relationship, set aside their differences, and find the impending answer to the question, "Who did it?". Need I say the pair in question is made of a vampire and a witch? And they have magical insect companions to help them?

Coven of Ill Repute was such a precious, cozy yet spooky read with great dialogue, a true mystery murder, excellent detective skills, a haunted house with its many secrets, magical beings, clowns, a circus-like atmosphere at times, intelligent twists and plots, and a precious love story to top it all off.

There is also excellent world-building, with crumbs perfectly left to set up the story to follow. I am now a true fan of S. L. Prater, and I'm dying (or, better to say, undying, pun intended) to see what happens next!

That was my first gothic romance and I loved it ! I didn’t know what to expect but I really love S. L. Prater's take on witches, even in the previous series, witches were different from the usual kind and for sure Quiet is really peculiar in the best possible way - she’s so smart, curious and her magic was so interesting.

The Duke of the Damned is dead and Quiet has been tasked to investigate and find the culprit, however, she hadn’t planned to see her ex-vampire partner Rorick who also made his way to the castle. Most of all the castle decided to mess with her plans and retained them inside, now they have to investigate, protect themselves from the weird things happening there and not kill each other.

The tension between the two is intense, I loved the vampire/witch opposition but most of all their interactions, dynamic, they’re just sarcastic, sassy with a touch of darkness. I was mesmerised by the instalment of the story and the plot - I’m excited for what is coming next.

I received an ARC Copy of this book from BookSirens, this review is from my own thoughts 😍

SL … shut up right now. This was so good?? Possibly my favorite of yours yet. In depth review coming in the morning.

I'm up and rested and ready to gush over this book! It's full of cute bug assistance and various unique beasties. We have an awkward witch and an "inexperienced" vampire duo who have reunited to once again solve a mystery together after a hiatus, but have to work through some (mostly imagined) animosity amongst themselves. We get forced proximity, slow burn, one bed, mutual possessiveness. We get to see them learn to be more vulnerable with one another which I love sm <3 <3 Let us not also forget this book has such a fun gothic, murder mystery plot that keeps you guessing AND we're gonna be blessed with another book????? TYSM

Lastly, I hear there are unsent letters from the MMC to the FMC...PLEASE SEND IT TO ME, RACHEL.

i enjoyed this overall! my only grievance is that there was a little *too* much going on. the world that the author created is incredibly unique, but almost detrimentally so. after a while, it felt like throwing a bunch of stuff into a pot and just hoping it makes a good stew instead of actual, thought out world-building. i found myself having to reread a couple passages to fully understand what a creature was or how a specific spell worked. still, i thought the writing was well done, the setting atmospheric and the characters very fun to read about. loved the use of quiet's bug magic. i'll definitely read the next one soon!

3.75, rounding up

This was a really fun combination of gothic fantasy, romance, and mystery. SL Prater writes fantastic fantasy beings - I’m mystified by the creatures in their stories every single time and enjoy that this went beyond vampires and witches. The romance is like grumpy x Sunshine but grumpy x grumpier and I loved every second of it. The mystery is twisty and complex without taking over the whole story.

Overall I really enjoyed this read and will definitely be reading the next one!

Thanks so much to the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Cute mystery with spooky haunted house and a grumpy witch and an even grumpier vampire. Also, there was a werewolf who was spite pissing on everything??

I received an advanced copy of this from BookSirens and S.L. Prater in exchange for my honest review. I greatly appreciate the opportunity to read this book early!❤️

I really enjoyed this read and it seemed more like a cozy mystery to me rather than a gothic romance. That’s not to say there isn’t romance in this though because there totally is and it will make you swoon😍 you’ve got vampires🧛🏼‍♂️, witches🧙🏼‍♀️, enemies to lovers, forced proximity, second chance romance, witty banter, insect companions🦋🕷️🪲, and so much more!

Rorick is a teddy bear vampire but only to Quiet. Quiet is a lovable bossy witch. They both get stuck in this haunted mansion to investigate the murder of two people. They have to work together to solve the case AND figure out how to get out of the mansion. Gilbert and Anita help them out along the way, providing assistance only the smartest and cutest insects could.

I’m excited to follow Rorick and Quiet on their next adventure!

“My eyes were on his lips, watching them form words that healed a wound in my heart.” and in mine too!!

Highlights 📖
Got my wish and read a S. L. Prater murder mystery after all these years! Plus a lower angst gothic romance between a super smart researcher witch and a detective vampire. I know!!!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ of 5
🍆🍆🍆 of 5 (note that I also include tension in my vegetable rating)
@ ARC (this is my honest opinion)

Genre 📖
Gaslamp (Harry Potter meets Pride & Prejudice) romance

Summary 📖
You would think a lower angst romance would not have the gore, the creepiness and the atmosphere we enjoy in gothic fiction… but it has! And I loved it!
However, in between a haunted castle that is literally trying to unlive them and a mystery that Quiet (our adorable bossy witch) must solve, we find the most delicious (due to the banter) second chance romance. And we have to appreciate how they slowly “grab” their second chance 🥵
Fact: garlic moths are cute and we love them.

Feels 📖
I fell in love with Rorick as soon as he opened his sunshiny mouth to protect an old lady in the train ❤️❤️
Quiet is our cranky bossy witch with a golden heart, an army of spiders, moths, butterflies and ants and the sexyest brain. Yes, as soon as she started bossing, she had me.
⚠️ slow burn reverse grumpy sunshine, my kryptonite 🥵
So, when a creepy castle forces proximity on them while trying to unalive its guests, you know it’s going to be good. This, until all those creepy, gory and scary things start to appear 😬.
Then, I fell in love with a spider and a garlic moth and all ends on a happy for now❤️
Yes, because S L Prater is not satisfied with the scary creatures! We are going to get more! Plus more spice, do not forget the spice… need more, please!

Content Warnings 📖
This is a mature novel, so please know that technical romance terms were used, aka føul language 😂 Check S L Prater’s content warnings.

“Which is why you don’t bed her?” My entire body heated as the words left me. I was in for an aug now. Might as well go for broke.

“If you’ve had no romantic partners and you don’t bed the courtesan you pay for, then does that mean you’ve never bedded anyone at all in your long life?”

“I’ve never bedded anyone,” he confirmed.

“As I mentioned before, I choose to avoid attachments, but then I hesitate to refer to myself as a virgin, given how often and how deeply I’ve had my tongue inside a woman.”

Must speak for itself I guess why I DNF.

Other reviewers said Virgin hero but did not specify anything hehe.
