This was truly such a delightful retelling of Mulan. Rather than a war-focused plot, instead this story featured an engaging quest across a kingdom loosely inspired by ancient Japan and China, filled with delightful characters, magic, adventure, and of course romance.

I adored the enemies-to-lovers dynamic between our heroine Mei and Prince Darcel, who was quite charming and honorable despite her desires to dislike him. Their romance was filled with banter and all the hilarious misadventures one would expect from a tale of mistaken identity as Mei masquerades as a boy, and despite the premise and close proximity the hero and heroine are for most of the book, it stayed completely clean and wholesome. Both characters experienced beautiful growth throughout their tale.

The magic in this book centered around spells created through herbalism, which I found unique and fascinating. I also loved the story's themes, a perfect continuation of the light symbolism that filled the preceding book Dawn. I truly adored this delightful, Mulan-inspired romance and can't wait for the next fairytale adventure in this fun world!

This book was absolutely incredible! Mulan is one of my favourite stories and I loved how Camille Peters re-imagined it so perfectly. I loved the characters' growth and development and I was thrilled by how Darcel and Mei's relationship progressed. I think that they are absolutely perfect for each other! Darcel was so gentle and kind towards her and Mei was so feisty. Although the quest was very serious, there were so many light-hearted moments and, later on, so many wonderfully touching romantic moments between Darcel and Mei. While I don't exactly like "questing" books as I find them too cliché, this book was incredible in that the moments were so real and heartfelt that I ignored the cliché-ness and immersed myself in the story. An absolutely delightful read, I simply could not put it down. Great work Camille Peters, I can't wait for your next release!

Such a cleverly written hidden identity story full of life, learning, forgiveness, healing and a beautiful love story! I just adored Mei and her tenacity. She was a wonderful character. She went through many hard experiences that helped her to grow and to continue developing her character. Prince Darcel was just as wonderful! I really loved seeing his internal struggles and goodness as we were able to read from his POV as well. That made me really happy. It gave such a great added strength to the story and developing both his and Mei's characters!

The secondary characters made me smile. They added another great layer to Mei's story. The conflict and resolutions were well written and had me rethinking parts of the book and how it played into the storyline, especially the storyline that has been throughout all of the books in this series.

I really loved the magic system that the author used. It's been so fun to read about throughout all of the books. I can't wait for you all to read this one and fall in love with Mei and Prince Darcel. Especially with all of the fun humor throughout of Mei disguising herself as a man. Ha! So fun!

This a beautiful and magical Mulan retelling. Full of sweet, awkward, and funny moments, this is one “quest” you don’t want to miss!

Mei starts off headstrong, fiery, and determined. She’s not one to take no for an answer. Jumping feet first into a quest with little info and a whole lot of questions, she disguises herself as a man to gain entry into place of her ailing father into the small entourage on a quest to save the kingdom. She’s challenged mentally, physically, and emotionally. Growing, learning, and finding herself along the way. Prince Darcel is also stubborn, decisive, but soft and caring underneath the tough exterior. He takes Mei (as Ren) under his wing to try to help her as she struggles through the physical challenges of the journey. They bring out the best in each other unraveling mysteries and finding lost treasures along the way.

The plot is well paced and full of adventure, mystery, surprises, magic, and danger. Some twists weren’t very surprising and resolved quicker than I was expecting since the build up went as long as it did for certain points. I loved all the banter, awkward moments made clear, and magic. It kept me interested through to the end.

Overall, charming read I’d recommend. Love the magical non-war twist to a classic, especially with the little Disney nods hidden.

Quest by Camille Peters is a beautifully written, Mulan-inspired fantasy that blends familiar themes with a richly imagined magical world. While it’s part of The Enchanted Kingdom Chronicles, this instalment works perfectly as a standalone adventure filled with heartfelt moments, clever twists, and a sweet, slow-burn romance.

The story follows Mei, a young apprentice herbalist living with her ailing father in their enchanted shop. For generations, their family has guarded ancient spells, carefully protected from the outside world. When the royal family sends word that Mei’s father must join a kingdom-wide quest to help combat the lingering effects of a broken curse, Mei doesn’t hesitate—she disguises herself as a boy and joins the quest in his place. If she doesn’t, it could cost her father his life… and risk exposing their family’s secrets to those who would use them selfishly—especially the prince leading the charge.

Right away, I was hooked. The decision Mei makes is both brave and deeply emotional, and her motivation—to protect her father and their legacy—feels genuine and high-stakes. The magical disguise she creates to pass as a boy adds tension and humour throughout the story, especially when she has to constantly be on guard around her new companions, hiding not only who she is but also how she feels.

One of my favourite things about Quest was the dynamic between Mei and Prince Darcel. Though she initially despises him—believing he’s selfish and entitled—spending time with him on the journey begins to challenge her assumptions. Their enemies-to-lovers arc is filled with banter, awkward misunderstandings, and those slow, sweet moments where you can feel the shift happening even as Mei resists it. And while the premise could easily turn overly romantic, the book keeps things completely clean and wholesome, with the emotional tension carrying most of the weight.

I also appreciated that we got dual POVs. It was great to get inside both Mei’s and Darcel’s heads, especially as they began to clash, understand each other, and evolve. Mei is clever, passionate, and fiercely loyal, while Darcel is under immense pressure to save the kingdom and prove himself. Their growth, both individually and together, was really satisfying.

The magic system deserves a mention too—it’s genuinely refreshing! The idea of herbalism-based spells felt grounded, natural, and different from the more flashy magic you find in most fantasy. I was especially charmed by the enchanted lantern that accompanies Mei. Its running commentary on her actions and thoughts added just the right amount of humour and whimsy and became one of my favourite side characters.

The story also touches on deeper themes—like duty vs. desire, the cost of secrecy, and learning to see beyond surface judgments. These elements were woven in gently but gave the book heart and made Mei’s journey feel meaningful beyond the action and romance.

Although this is Book 4 in the series, it absolutely works on its own. Readers who have read Dawn (Book 3) will recognise Darcel’s brother and the larger context of the broken curse over Lumeria, but it’s explained clearly enough here that you never feel lost. That said, this book may make you want to go back and read the others!

Final Thoughts:
Quest is a charming and magical tale filled with heartfelt choices, delightful side characters, a refreshing take on magic, and a romance that balances tension with sweetness. If you enjoy retellings with clever twists, hidden identities, strong character development, and clean fantasy romance, you’ll adore this book. Camille Peters has created a world I’d gladly revisit—and I can’t wait to see what fairytale comes next in this whimsical series!

This is a Japanese version of Mulan combined with the magical world seen in other books in The Enchanted Kingdom Chronicles.

At first, I was skeptical. Mulan is one story I have never particularly liked, but since I'm familiar with Peter's work, I wanted to give this a try. She did not fail to deliver a magical retelling with her own twists. Although I don't really care for Disney's animated version, Disney lovers will be pleased to find easter eggs that are solely from their version, not the historical legend. This is one Mulan retelling that I very much enjoyed.

Mei is a headstrong young woman. Her filial piety is admirable. Her fiery defense of him and dislike of the prince combined with her beauty makes her memorable. Her disguise as a man is magically sound though her mannerisms are flimsy. I will note that Mei is physically attracted to Darcel while still disguised as a man, so there are a couple of awkward exchanges that result from misunderstandings. Both of them seem to have different personalities at least once. Her uncertainty as a man compared to her confident demeanor as a man makes sense due to her disguise. Darcel feels like a complete 180 shift between his introduction scene and the rest of the book. By the time they become a couple, he can match her fire without allowing situations to escalate. He is protective of her. I think these two characters ended up having good chemistry. I am a huge fan of the lantern relic sidekick.

The journey took us to several magical locations which I absolutely loved. The forgotten temple could have been an entire plot on its own! So many secrets we saw, and so many more I would want to see more of! I could sympathize with Mei about wanting to linger. Honestly, at some point, I think the author could design a fantasy atlas with all of the locations from her books, and it would easily rival the best fantasy realms. This world is one that a reader can easily fall into which makes it perfectly magical.

I was expecting more Chinese elements since the original story came from China. Therefore, I was initially confused by the Japanese cultural references. However, I saw on Instagram that the author stated this was an intentional choice out of more familiarity with Japanese culture rather than the result of a lack of research mistaking the two cultures. Learning this cleared up my confusion, allowing me to sit back and enjoy the story better.

I think the quick turnaround time of the book contributed to the few places where the dialogue and prose felt a little too much and made the twists feel a little too expected. Nonetheless, I liked this book. It is clean in language and content. Besides a couple hugs and kisses, there is a bathing scene reminiscent of the one in Disney's animated version. Nothing truly inappropriate, but it is present. I would recommend this book, especially for people who love Mulan, Disney, Japan, and/or enchanting quests. If you've been waiting for Prince Darcel's story, definitely don't miss reading Quest!

A beautiful retelling of Mulan.

Mei was such a breath of fresh air. It was brilliant to see her put Darcel in his place, despite his royal title. She had so much love and strength - putting everything on the line to protect her father and prove herself. Yes, her pride was sometimes her undoing but seeing her grow on the quest, letting her walls down and extending grace to others when they'd made mistakes was wonderful.

We saw both sides of Darcel back in 'Dawn' - his callousness in the midst of desperation, born out of the great love he has for his kingdom. In Quest, he fully realised that his kingdom is made up of individuals whose lives are all just as valuable as each other. He learned patience as by supporting others in their weaknesses, he's able to get the best out of them to achieve the shared goal of saving Lumeria.

The two of them together were beautiful. They made each other better and grew together to create a blossoming love and partnership. I especially appreciated how Darcel handled the reveal of Mei's true identity - he didn't descend into anger but took the time to fully understand her actions and how his own actions contributed to the deception.

Probably my favourite aspect of this book was the world building of Lumeria. The Japanese and Chinese inspired landscape and culture was so rich - something that makes Quest stand out from all of Camille's other stories. I loved the whole concept of herbal magic and the immense lore behind its history. Not to mention Lumis who was a fantastic companion to Mei, illuminating all parts of her soul - even if she wanted to keep them in the dark.

I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the other kingdoms in this world - I really hope they'll have the same rich world building as Lumeria.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone
*Prince Darcel’s brother’s story is the one before this one (called Dawn) & shows how the curse over Lumeria was broken (if anyone wants a better look at that aspect)

– this is told from Mei & (Prince) Darcel’s points of view

-it is mentioned that Mei’s mother passed several years ago & her father currently has deteriorating health

Review:

I had so much fun reading this book! I loved seeing the ties from the Mulan tale I know (the Disney movies) and how Camille Peters mixed it into her own fantasy world with magic! I loved so many of the magical things and how they worked. I especially loved the lantern who liked to comment to Mei about whatever she was thinking about or doing. 😂 I loved seeing the struggle Mei had in trying not to fall for the prince, let alone the fact that she had to cover up/hide any interest as it would look weird to her companions with what they could see of her disguise. I also loved that we got a chance to know Prince Darcel & where his mind was at after we really got to know Mei’s motivations and see her with the group.
I can’t wait to find out what else will come up in this world!

Summary:

Mei has been training under her ailing father to be an herbalist for their enchanted shop and to protect the secrets herbalists have kept safe for generations. But those secrets may need to come to light in order to save Lumeria from a second disaster…

When her father is required to join a quest, Mei doesn’t think twice about taking his place. With his failing health, it would be an almost certain death sentence and leave Mei with no chance of helping him recover, losing the last bit of family she has. So she makes herself a magical concoction to disguise her feminine features in order to join the quest on his behalf – as his son. But not everything is as Mei expected, least of all the prince that she has loathed since he demanded her clearly sick father join them. Now she is stuck between her heart and the secrets she’s kept from her the men who have become her friends…

Prince Darcel feels the pressure of the kingdom’s expectations. And with the darkness looming in the shadows despite the curse having been broken, the people are looking to Darcel and his brother, the king, for help. Time is of the essence and they haven’t a moment to lose…

What happened to all the books where the heroine disguises herself as a boy and hilarity ensues? Well you found it! Camille Peters has done it again! She always manages to remind me of my secret favorite tropes that no one else seems to be doing! And this retelling is EPIC! If you like fairytale romances with extra swoony but clean romance and heart-meltingly flawed characters—this is the book for you!

I adored Mei with her headstrong personality and quirky love of herbology. I loved watching her emotional journey along side her the physical quest. And lets not forget the most memorable and hilarious meet grumpy with Prince Darcel! Their banter is absolutely delightful right from the start and it just gets better and better.

Prince Darcel is also head strong and expects his dictates to be followed so imagine his surprise when things do not go as planned. Despite his frustration, Darcel says and does the sweetest things making the romance in this book absolutely delightful, my heart was melting in a puddle! All set in the most magical Japanese inspired world!

This book took me on the most magical adventure I've had in a long time! Pick it up today! You won't regret it!

Happy Reading!

This might be my first ever Mulan retelling and I really enjoyed it! I loved the similarities and differences to the original, it made for an engaging read. I enjoyed the characters and I felt like they were all well-developed, especially Darcel (I really liked getting to know him better)! Almost all of the story was about hiking and journeying but it was never boring. The pacing was well-written! I enjoyed the romance as well, it was so sweet. I didn't personally love the way Mei's identity was revealed and the aftermath of it, but it was still a unique and interesting way to begin to resolve things. Overall, this was a great addition to the series! I look forward to more retellings like this one!

This story was SUCH a fun Mulan retelling!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the awkwardness Mei experiences as she spends the book disguised as a man, hahaha. SO many lines made me laugh out loud!! The writing is just so clever and witty!

I love both the hero and heroine so much, and the herbalism element is so creative! It is so magical all the different remedies she was able to create, and I felt myself being inspired by watching Mei’s confidence grow in her skills.

I also love how it is a continuation of healing the land from the curse in Dawn (which was another one of my favorites!). I seriously loved this book!

Mulan is one of my favorite stories and this retelling did it justice! I really like the new take on this story in the country is not a war but she is still needed to take her father's place. The relationships that develop are so great, not only between the characters but also Mei with herself and her role. This book was a great read with lots of interesting herbalist aspects and mystical themes. It was truly an escape.

The only part that was lacking was the companion who figures out Mei's secret. This felt like it was wrapped up quickly, with no real ramifications and then forgotten. Otherwise this was a great read.

This book is a refreshing, feel good, inspiring adventure, and I really enjoyed the Asian influence!
For those who enjoy true romance and a clean read, I would totally recommend this book!
The romance was so beautifully written, and the buildup so natural, it was very satisfying.
The setting and descriptions could not have been more beautiful, which really enriched
the adventure for me.
And once again, the author gives us a sidekick that is so unique, and so well personified.
A very sweet and honest love story, with adventure to boot.

I looked forward to reading this book, and I enjoyed it. At first, Mei frustrated me some, but as I came to know her better and as she grew along the journey, I came to appreciate and like her. There were some awkward moments (brought on by her disguise), but there were also spectacular moments (especially that first kiss).

The journey the characters took as they pursued the quest was rewarding to follow along with, and I enjoyed seeing their relationships grow along the way.

I vaguely remember meeting Darcel in the previous book "Dawn" so I wasn't sure what to expect for this story, but I really enjoyed it and Mei's interactions with him. I also liked all the secondary characters (Jiang, Kael, etc and even the lantern Lumis). Reading how all the characters were suspicious of Mei, how Mei and Darcel also grew to trust each other from their initial distrust, and how Mei's feelings about Darcel gradually shifting was chef's kiss.

Chatacter growth was slow going

But beautiful and dramatic once it finally got there. Sloooooooooow start to enjoying Mei, though! Heavier allusions to faith than I associate with this author, unfortunately. But much prefer literal lantern light as a higher power than some things I've read. Pet peeve: spoon feeding audiences by labeling perspectives. We're smart enough to tell who's talking!

The title of this book does a pretty good job of describing the story. This is a string of quests that eventually lead to the completion of the main quest. No one is perfect, and many lessons are learned along the way.

Magical, fun retelling of Mulan, however not my favorite from Camille Peters. . I haven’t read any other retellings of Mulan, so I especially enjoyed that aspect. However, the pace of the story felt too slow and the stakes just didn’t feel high enough, if that makes sense. I still love this author and recommend her books for magical easy reading, but this one just wasn’t a favorite.

This is a retelling variation of Mulan but instead of Mei taking her father’s place to go to war, she takes her father’s place on a quest to end the lingering effects of a curse. I loved all the culturally rich inspired themes bringing Asia alive and making this tale truly unique. The quest was a fun aspect of the story and of course Mei’s disguise as a man always left you wondering who would discover her if anyone along the way. Who will she choose to reveal herself to if anyone?
We get to see Darcel again and learn more about how he has grown since Dawn. It’s a bit of an enemies to lovers tale as she has a deep desire to hate and oppose everything about the prince but will she able to move past her initial loathing of the prince?

Quest by Camille Peters
👑 Family secrets
👑 A grand adventure
👑 A prince (can he be trusted?)
👑 An enchanted herbalist shop
👑 Sweet and swoony romance, just kisses (no spice)
Genre: Fairytale
A delightful Mulan retelling! Mei joins Prince Darcel's mission in diguise but will she decide to help or hinder his quest?
Plenty of swoony (and awkard) moments in this one! It did focus a lot on thoughts and feelings which made it a bit slow paced at times, but I greatly enjoyed it overall.
Book 4 in the Enchanted Kingdom Chronicles (could easily be read as a standalone)

Although the market has been saturated with fairy tale retellings over the past few years as they slowly increase in popularity, one fairy tale that is often overlooked is that of Mulan. The reason is clear; it’s not an easy tale to tell. So, while I was excited to pick up Quest, I was also hesitant. I love Camille Peters and will always recommend her books to anyone looking for a good clean fantasy romance, but Quest wasn’t it for me. The plot was too thin, and the romance was too strange. Although I enjoyed the idea of a Mulan retelling, this particular story missed the mark.

The pacing was slow and the stakes were low, I really enjoyed the journey to the forgotten temple, magical elements, and Japanese cultural references in this Mulan retelling. I love when authors write books with an Asian female main character and hope she will include them in one of future fairytale retellings or fantasy standalone series. I really liked a side character Sir Jiang.
