Ice Cold Player: Alternate Cover

A deal with the devil...

Gavin

Anyone but her. Eva Adams—the entitled, picture-perfect cheer princess. Incapable of empathy, patently manipulative, and absolutely beautiful. I can't afford her drama—I just want to play my last year of hockey without being kicked out of TU, but there she is on my first day back. Crying. In a weak moment, I make her an offer. An agreement I never thought she'd take. Except she surprises me, and now I'm faced with a dilemma. Protect my secrets… or win the girl.

Eva

Anyone but him. Gavin King—the rebellious, coffee-slinging hockey god. Arrogant, irreverent, and way hotter than he has any right to be. Despite the lady tingles, I'd be happy to spend my last year at TU without seeing his face—or his tattoos—again. It should be easy. I have cheer, I have my friends, and I have nowhere to live. To my eternal frustration, he offers me a solution… for a price. When I take the deal, I can't help wondering what else I'll give him before the end.

Ice Cold Player is the first book in the Beyond the Ice series of interconnected standalones featuring the hockey players of Teagan University. It's an enemies-to-lovers, he-falls-first, forced-proximity, college hockey romance with plenty of heat.

The Princess and the Hockey Hottie

This was a fairly well written book with interesting tropes and a promising storyline but I just didn’t love this one. I sort of felt like I was dropped in the middle of the story and was missing facts. In fact, I even went so far as to make sure that this was the first book in this series. While some details were fleshed out, I still felt like I was missing information at times. And while I liked Gavin, I struggled to connect with Eva and couldn’t quite feel the connection between Eva and Gavin in the beginning. I also thought that Eva’s reason for “hating” Gavin was ridiculous. I did eventually become more invested in the story and was rooting for Eva and Gavin and their HEA. I was also glad that there wasn’t a ridiculous and unnecessary third act breakup. Despite my early reservations, this one ended strong.

dnf at 6%.

Who are these people and am I supposed to know them from another book? I feel like this story started going 60 mph but without a car...so basically just an accident waiting to happen.

Already irritated by FMC. Quit reading when MMC just offered FMC a place to live in exchange for sexual favors. Major ick factor.

I have some mixed feelings about it. To start with, I found the pace of the story to be a bit too fast for my liking. It felt like events were unfolding rapidly, and I didn't always have time to fully process what was happening.

One aspect that contributed to this feeling was the lack of depth in the character development, particularly with the FMC, Eva. As a newcomer to Nikki's books, I struggled to connect with Eva and understand her background. There were a lot of loose ends regarding Eva that I didn't get the answer to until much later in the story. Frankly, I didn't find her storyline very engaging, and I didn't feel invested in her journey.

However, there were some redeeming qualities to the book. I particularly enjoyed the her roommates, especially Gavin. They added some much-needed depth to the story, and I found myself more interested in them than in Eva.

What you’ll find:

- Enemies to Lovers
- He Falls First
- One Bed

- Cute Pet Duck
- No 3rd Act Breakup

I love sports romance, and I'm happy I discovered Nikki Hall. As I have not read Nikki's previous books, I was not aware Eva is from the Wild Card series. I will definitely go back and read that series. For this book in particular, it took me a moment to get into it because I couldn't connect to the characters right away. Nevertheless, the book is well-written, and I enjoyed it.

Gavin King is an NHL-bound star hockey player with a checkered past. Eva Adams is a confident, sassy cheerleader with a big heart. Gavin is Eva's nemesis, and when she finds herself homeless and needing a place to live, Gavin offers Eva and her pet duck a room in the home he shares with other hockey players. While living under the same roof, they cannot deny the chemistry between them.

The enemies-to-lovers aspect of the story was done well. Gavin and Eva's romance was a slow burn, but the buildup was entertaining. Both connected based on the losses they've experienced and provided a shoulder for each other to lean on. I enjoyed the growth of the characters and the trust they built with each other. I also enjoyed the secondary characters and, of course, Eva's pet duck, Henry. A duck wearing diapers is funny to imagine.

Although there were some issues with the flow of the story, Ice Cold Player was fun to read. I am excited to read Cole's story next!

Thank you, Nikki Hall and Wordsmith Publicity, for the e-ARC. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This is book 1 of the Beyond the Ice Series!

I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC 🥰

In Ice Cold Player, readers are immersed in the world of college hockey and the tumultuous relationship between Gavin King and Eva Adams. Hall delivers a gripping enemies-to-lovers romance filled with tension, passion, and unexpected twists.

Gavin King, the rebellious hockey player with a troubled past, finds himself drawn to Eva Adams, the picture-perfect cheer princess with secrets of her own. Despite their initial animosity, circumstances force them into a reluctant partnership, sparking a series of events that challenge their preconceptions and ignite undeniable chemistry between them.

Hall expertly develops Gavin and Eva's characters, giving them depth and complexity beyond their initial impressions. Gavin's struggles with his past and his desire to protect those he cares about are juxtaposed with Eva's facade of perfection and her internal conflicts. As they navigate their complicated feelings for each other, they both undergo significant growth and self-discovery, making their journey a compelling and emotional one.

The romance between Gavin and Eva is steamy and intense, with palpable chemistry that leaps off the page. The slow burn of their relationship adds depth to their connection, while the obstacles they face only serve to strengthen their bond. Hall does an excellent job of building anticipation and suspense throughout the story, keeping readers engaged and eager to see how Gavin and Eva's story will unfold.

The college hockey setting adds an exciting backdrop to the romance, providing plenty of opportunities for drama, camaraderie, and heart-pounding action on and off the ice. Fans of sports romance will appreciate the authentic portrayal of college athletics and the camaraderie among the players.

Ice Cold Player is a captivating and entertaining read that will appeal to fans of enemies-to-lovers romance and college sports-themed novels. With its engaging storyline, well-developed characters, and sizzling romance, this book is sure to keep readers hooked from start to finish.

Recap:
Eva the head cheerleader at TU, just lost her apt and can’t find a new one that will take her pet duck Henry. She has money but this college town doesn’t have much left open anymore and she won’t go to her parents. After her brother died protecting her from a tornado when she was a stubborn little girl, her parents blamed her for everything and just threw money at her to get her away. Henry is her family and won’t leave her. Gavin is the star quarterback who parents died a few years back, and he has been covering for his twin brother’s rebellion ever since. And after he covered for him with a chick, his brother had to pee for a drug test in the championship game in hs, he popped positive. He had to sit out and lost his college offer. Thankfully he was already drafted by Dallas and the coach got him a place at TU and his brother followed to be close. Eva doesn’t hold back with her hatred of Gavin, and his mouth doesn’t hold back from her. The hate is misdirected, but we don’t resolve that till later. He sees her sitting outside with her duck and bag and offers her the empty room. They have a weird hate attraction for one another, but won’t admit it. She agrees to the room and will clean up and have a food service for them instead of rent. He didn’t realize sharing a bathroom with her and having it conjoin their rooms would be bad, but he was wrong, she is invading his senses all over, and the 3 other hockey bro roomies, Cole, Reece, Mase. Their lives begin to intertwine and he knows she will be his, but she only can commit to a secret relationship cause her fathers governor race has him judging everyone more and she agreed to date randoms he finds so he doesn’t cut her off before she finishes her decree. After her gay bff, Stephen, comes to visit he tells Gavin he will help him get her, cause he approves and she needs him. The anniversary of her brother death, he holds her after finding her upset, and something shifts. They end up making a bet he couldn’t make her blush during their guys hockey game, and she loses quick, and must go on a date with him, in which he is set up to show she can skate real good and beats him in a race. Just when things seem to be going well with them, she falls at a game because the girl trying to replace her caused her partner to lose grip, he caught her but she does hurt her shoulder, he jumps from the stands and it’s posted. Her father threatens him and she is forced to go to an event with her teacher, but he has other plans and Stephen helps by having him as his plus one. Her dad threatens her and she flips, and her emotions come out and she gets to say what she has been wanting to her parents for years, being a kid making a mistake isn’t her fault. She can’t believe he missed his game to support her, but they leave and he makes it for the 3rd period. She has her chosen family and Gavin has turned her life upside down but in a good way! HEA

Arc read in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first book read by Nikki and I will definitely be back for more. I definitely felt I need to go back and read the series before this one! Not because you miss anything, you can just tell by some of the characters mentioned! This can be read completely separate from the Wild Card series.

Eva and Gavin were such a fun couple to follow. Both are self assured yet kind and compassionate. They are confident in their self worth and it lights up on the pages! Eva’s complicated relationship with her parents is where her conflict comes into play, as well as loss. Gavin also knows loss, and they just make for a compatible pair. They understand each other quickly, and know how to push each other’s buttons. And how to be there for each other too. I loved their chemistry and banter! I also love that the title isn’t referring to Gavin…lol

I’m excited for Cole’s story!

Gavin calls Eva “princess” because she’s rich and carries herself with privilege. She is everything he shouldn’t want, but the truth is… he does.

Eva knows a piece of Gavin’s past and keeps reminding herself she should stay away. Her life has been ruled by her overbearing father, and she knows Gavin would never be someone he’d approve of. But when Eva finds herself in a position where she needs help, she refuses to turn to her father. Gavin makes her an offer she can’t refuse—but can she keep her heart out of it?

Watching their story unfold was such a ride. I loved every moment filled with banter, angst, and laughter.

I don’t know if it’s a me thing or if the book just fell flat cause i’ve read so much hockey romance but I wanted to love this! I bought the first three books so I’m hoping to revisit them but I don’t think i’ll do that for now. It had the premise of a decent story but it felt kind of insta love, low drama in the spots that could’ve been more intense and the ending was pretty whatever.

This is a story about being controlled by your family and how long you'll let it happen. Both Eva and Gavin have this same problem. What will it take to break the cycle and will love win in the end? Loved the friends and especially Henry.

Gavin & Eva

New author to me. College aged, hockey, enemies to lovers?. Eva hates Gavin because of what she heard he’d did. Gavin has no idea. Eva is homeless because of a duck. Gavin offers a house. Her dad only will pay for college if she goes out with his setups. Gavin is a twin with Danny who is independent but causes trouble, but really doesn’t cause trouble? The roommates share care of said duck. Lots going on. Eva is a little annoying, but Gavin is written swoony and has alpha tendencies. There is some spice not a lot. It has a HEA.

I love all the Nikki Hall books. The football series was absolutely perfect. I couldn’t wait to read about Eva because she was such a fun character in The Wild Card series. However, I wish we would have gotten more of those characters in this book. I know the focus is shifting to the hockey players but the football stars and their girlfriends were her best friends. It’s like they all got into relationships and kicked Eva out? Honestly that part was disappointing. But I loved Eva and the connection with Gavin. I loved the roommates and let’s not forget Henry!

It was a good read. Enough spice and great banter. Didn’t give it more stars because I wanted more of those old friendships.

While I enjoyed the book and the characters themselves, it felt rushed over. There were too many time jumps that weren't developed with enjoy detail, so it felt jarring to go from some flirting to more. I want to read the in-between and the build, but it feels like an over zealous editor wanted to get to the drama so they cut the key building points.

I'm looking forward to the next in this series though and hope to get a better pacing for rhe character's relationship

This was an ok read. I stopped around 60% to read something else, when I came back to this I couldn’t remember anything. I had to read the blurb to jog my memory. I probably should’ve just DNFed at that point.

Maybe this is nit picky…but the MMC is young 20s/college aged and this cover model is clearly a middle aged man 😬

Spice 3.5🌶

This is a new author for me, and I enjoyed this book. It did take me a bit to get into it. I even skipped over a few pages towards the beginning, just until I got really into this book. I felt, personally, that it took a bit for me to enjoy this book. But around 25% into it, I really started to enjoy it. It's nothing towards the author or her writing. This book was written really well, I just had a hard time getting into the characters at first.

Eva is a very rich but bratty and bi+chy character. She is very determined and smart but likes to argue and bit back. Especially towards Gavin. Her life really is a mess, and she had so much on her plate. She is part of the cheer squad at TU and taking on a degree and career that would have made her brother proud. She does everything to make others happy, but nobody gets by her boss attitude. She finds herself homeless, with her rich father taking her she must go on dates he picks out or he isn't paying for her senior year in college. There is 1 person at that college she can't stand, and it's Gavin.

Gavin is captain of the hockey team and is already going to play for the NHL in Dallas. He can't mess up like he did in his past. Dallas and his agent had their eyes on him to make sure things don't happen like they did 3 years ago. He has a twin brother, Danny, who even looks just like Gavin, even down to the same tattoos. Danny uses Gavin to switch places with him for tests and work. Gavin wants to be a good brother and help, even though he thinks Danny is screwing up. He helps everyone out and has to be the best at hockey he can be. He can't afford to mess up.

Gavin sees Eva crying one day in the courtyard of the coffee place he works at. Even though they don't get along, he wants to help her. He let's Eva and her duck Henry, whose a girl, lol, move in with him and his 3 roommates. They have this attraction and chemistry that is crazy hot. His rule is that no one in the house can touch or date her... except him, of course. When they get together, it's hot and beautiful. Eva learns to trust him, even though she had a reason for hating him. She tells him things that she doesn't share with anyone.

Gavin can't stand her going on these dates her father sets up. He can't stand her being around any other guy. Even though Eva has no plans to actually date these guys, she did it to appease her father. Gavin can't help but step in and protect her. Even though Eva fights it at first, he finally wears down her walls she had put up. Gavin wants Eva. Not just for sex, but wants it all. He wants the relationship. Eva agrees to date him, but only in secret. Her father doesn't think she can choose a man suitable for herself. Gavin hates hiding their relationship but will do anything as long as he has her. He plays better with her around and is his best self with her. But Eva thinks it will never last. He can't be long term. Will it be enough for Gavin, though? Will things finally go wrong and mess up their whole roommate arrangement? Will Eva finally do what she wants for once?

Gavin's hockey roommates. Cole, Reese, and Mase are great, and I find myself wanting their books. They are funny and take care of Eva's duck like their in a committed relationship with that dang thing. It comical to read how they take care of Henry. Mase is the grouchy goaly that lives in the basement. He had some secrets and hidden past that I'm ready to read. I love a good hockey goalie book. I hope his comes soon and not last like most hockey series I read.

I read this book as an ARC through Wordsmith Publicity and this is my honest opinion.

It was surprising when Mac and Eva didn't get a happy ending or even a relationship in Play Maker, the last book in the Wild Card series. I think I can speak for Wild Card series fans when I say we hoped they would be end game. Then Blue stole Mac's heart in the best way and Eva had some interesting interactions with Gavin at her favorite coffee shop. After that, I couldn't be mad about Eva and Mac not ending up together. I had a feeling Eva and Gavin's distaste for each other was going to lead to some amazing chemistry. I was right and it led to a great start to this new spin-off series.

Eva was a confident, attention attracting cheerleader. She was in the process of rebuilding old friendships and looking for a new place to live. The last place she ever thought she would end up living was with her coffee house nemesis / hockey player Gavin. Gavin was a busy guy between hockey and keeping up with his brother. He knew letting Eva and her duck move into his hockey house was a gamble, but he couldn't seem to stop himself from offering it. She hates him and can't stand her privilege, but behind all that hate was a raging attraction. I loved seeing it combust. The two of them pushed and pulled against each other until they ended up together. I loved how it all happened and how they supported each other when it mattered most.

While Eva and Gavin were the center of attention in this book, others also had their time to shine. Henry the duck stole the show half the time. Then there were Gavin's roommates. I'm highly intrigued by them, especially Cole. I'm glad he's getting a book next. Oh, and Eva's best friend Stephen was a lot of fun, too. I even enjoyed Gavin's brother who could have easily been someone I disliked.

The only thing I might even complain a tiny bit about was how easily and neatly everything wrapped up for Eva and Gavin in the end. It was almost too easy for them. That being said, this is a sports romance, and I didn't expect them to go through the ringer or anything. I liked that it a nice, light read.

It was very fun being back at TU with some favorite characters and some great new ones. I love what Nikki Hall did with Eva and Gavin's romance. I can't wait to read Cole's book hopefully soonish.

Disclaimer: I received this book at no cost from the publisher/author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own.

This book was such a great start to the Beyond the Ice series. I didn't know this before reading it, but this series is a spinoff series to the Wild Card series. I am definitely going to have to go back and read that one!

Nikki Hall had a smooth and relatable writing style that I totally meshed with straight away. The plot was exciting and extremely compelling. I loved the premise and it really delivered an amusing story.

I was able to connect with the characters straight off the bat. They had lots of depth and felt distinct in their personalities. I enjoyed the character development and the journeys of the characters. The secondary characters were great and made me want more from this series. Oh, and we can't forget the most darling character, Henry. I love quirky and unusual pets in stories.

The romance in this book is a slow burn with lots of angst. The enemies-to-lovers trope is played out very well. I loved how Gavin and Eva slowly grew a connection that blossomed into more. Their chemistry was so powerful and undeniable. The romance kept me on the edge of my seat.

Overall, this was a riveting enemies-to-lovers college sports romance that definitely made its mark. I really fell for this author's writing style and fleshed-out characters. I am excited for more in this series and to check out this author's backlist. If college sports romance is your jam, this book will fit the bill. Especially if you are in your hockey romance era, like me.

Ahhh!! I was chosen to receive an ARC for Ice Cold Player! If you follow me on instagram, you’ll know how excited I was for this book and it did not disappoint!!

Eva is a cheerleading goddess with a feisty personality and a heart of gold for those she cares for. After a rough spring semester, Eva finds herself without a home that is willing to let her duck stay with her. After striking up a deal with her devilishly handsome hockey god nemesis, she is finally able to breathe, but can she fight the growing feelings she has for the man she despised.

Gavin is a man with a plan and has a secret he wants to keep away from the ‘knows-everything-about-everyone’ Eva Adams. But after seeing her in a vulnerable state, he caves and offers her, and her duck, a place to stay while she finishes her last year at TU. Something about the fiery cheerleader ignites a side to Gavin that he hadn’t experienced before and it makes him question what is really important in life? Secrets or something more?

Ok, I absolutely DEVOURED this book! Eva and Gavin were absolutely perfect for each other! Both were feisty. She was sunshine with a slightly grumpy side. He was grumpy with a slightly sunshine side, especially when it came to Eva. Both Gavin and Eva had experienced immense loss is their lives and throughout the book, they were both able to heal that part of themselves by being able to talk it through with the other. I will admit, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Eva in the previous books. But I loved her growth in this one and thought she truly came into her own towards the end! Gavin was perfect! I just loved his character, especially when his feelings for Eva became more cemented.

There were a couple points throughout the book where I thought some transitions were a little choppy, but overall it was a spectacular read and I will definitely be rereading this in the future!

What to look for:
- Enemies to lovers
- College Hockey Romance
- He falls first
- No third act breakup
- Feisty heroine/Protective Hero
- One bed
- And of course, a troublemaking duck

I could tell you about the enemies to lovers, roommates, forced proximity romance between a bratty cheerleader and a hockey player with German Shepherd energy and a dirty mouth. I could tell you about how Gavin falls first but knows Eva is determined to ice anyone and everyone out, so he sets about slowly breaking down her walls to love her how she deserves to be loved. I could tell you about the plethora of bestie sidekick characters and how they’re all amazing and super emotionally intelligent for college kids, and that the main couple actually listens to the voices of reason. I could tell you about Eva’s awful dad and how much he can go sit in syrup instead of trying to micromanage his daughter like the doll he apparently thinks she is instead of an adult. But instead I want to tell you about Henry.

Henry is Eva’s pet duck and she is a national treasure. Eva finds herself unable to secure housing at the beginning of her senior year of college because everywhere she tries to get in won't allow her to bring Henry, and Eva isn’t about to ditch the duck just because times are hard. When Gavin learns of the situation he offers them the spare room in his house and Henry, ever the opportunist, immediately decides that he is going to be her father now. Henry has a special quack for Gavin. She escapes into his room to make nests in his clothes. She bed hops between all of the guys in the house and has her own little rituals with each of them. They call her baby girl. Henry is thriving. And despite the fact that the whole rest of the book is great and worth the read, she is an icon and deserves to be the reason you pick up Ice Cold Player.

I first read about Eva last summer when I read Game Changer, the prequel-novella of the original Teagan University series, Wild Card, and had planned to finish the series, but mood reader problems: my attention was diverted by another bookstagram post. However, when I saw the ARC sign up for Ice Cold Play and read that it was about Eva, I knew I had to read this book. While you can read this book apart from the Wild Card series, I choose to go back and finish them and I personally am so glad! Eva was part of every book and we catch glimpses of her and Gavin interacting in each one, so by the time I got to this book I was so thirty for their story and was also eager for more Nikki MMCs, and her brand of sweet and spicy.

Eva is such a strong and sassy character, I knew she would continue busting balls and need a specific kind of strong MMC to truly hold his own and be her match. Gavin is so focused and determined not to blow his second chance at hockey but the draw of Eva is just what he needs to break free of the press and also succeed. I will never get over an MMC who falls first and there is something special about an athlete who adjusts his priorities to include the one he’s head over heels for and it only helps him become better. I loved this couples journey from enemies to lovers (who doesn’t though right?!), I love how they were so supportive of each other and constantly showed up. Nikki gave Eva the perfect man for HER.

This book gave us chaotic family dynamics, banter and tension, he falls first, a silly pet duck, and the way the spice HIT! This book can totally be binged in one sitting, and you will want to! Also I am so excited for this new series featuring the found family of the hockey roommates!

There's so much to love in this book. It's such a sweet, quirky, fun, spicy hockey romance, and I really enjoyed reading it. Eva and Gavin begin things at odds, but their relationship becomes something special as they break down their walls and confide in each other. Each has some dark past experiences that have shaped who they've become and made them into puzzle pieces that are a perfect fit.

I loved all the side characters that they call friends, from the other hockey players to the football players to the lifelong best friends. Even Danny, Gavin's twin who is a bit of trouble, comes around to be more likeable. The best side character, though? Henry, hands down. She is Eva's pet duck, and the reason she ended up in Gavin's house to begin with; he found her crying in a courtyard because she had no place to live that would allow her to bring Henry with, and she wouldn't leave her behind. The other guys in the house have their own little bonds with her, and she has routines and rituals with each of them. It's such a sweet thing to see, and helps fill out each character's personality as we watch them with her.

The banter that leads to romance is one of my favorite things to read, and it didn't disappoint in this book. The forced proximity trope is at the top of my list, and Gavin's house had it in spades. Roommates whose rooms are connected by a jack and jill bathroom? Yes, please. And I love when a hockey romance includes actual hockey. It becomes more real, a part of the story, rather than just a descriptor for a character.

I will definitely be reading the next book, because Cole with Henry? Adorable. I need more!

Thank you to the author and to Wordsmith publicity for the gifted copy. I am voluntarily writing and sharing my review.

loved this one

“ I wanted a bratty, manipulative cheerleader with pink hair and soft skin. “

After seeing Eva throughout the last Football series, I needed her story. When we catch up with Eva, she has returned from a summer away and is trying to get her life in order.

She has conditions that she must live up to in order to keep her dad happy and their deal in tact but she had other things to deal with. The most important is finding a place to live with her duck, Henry.

“I’m messing with her balance, but she doesn’t know I’ll catch her. Every time.”

Let’s say she is a little taken back when Gavin offers her a place to live, especially since she has made her feelings for him known. She is NOT a fan of this hockey player for reasons we find out in this book.

“You’re not in charge tonight, Princess. We’re taking our time.”

As she gets to know him, she realizes that what she thought, may have not been the whole story. Gavin has his own secrets and he knows the closer he lets Eva in, the greater the possibility that she may burn him with that information.

“ He felt like coming home, like I belonged here, with him. “

The chemistry between these two characters literally steamed up my kindle and I was a sucker for Gavin and his inner thoughts. They both carry so much on their shoulders but throughout the book, they learn to lean each other.

I also need to shout out their roommates, Gavin’s hockey teammates who have me SO curious about their story. I love how they embrace Eva and how well they adapt to Henry to making sure she is a well loved little duck. This was such a great way to kick off the series and I can’t WAIT FOR Cole’s book.

**ARC REVIEW**
Ice Cold Player is book #1 in Nikki Hall's new hockey romance series, Beyond the Ice.
I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!!! Nikki Hall honestly writes the most beautiful love stories with such great characters.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spicy rating: 🔥🔥🔥

If you like these tropes, you will enjoy reading this book :)
🏒 Hockey Player x Cheerleader
🏒 Enemies to Lovers
🏒 Forced Proximity/Roommates
🏒 He Falls First and Hard

My Thoughts
Nikki has written such a great book!!!!

Gavin King is a cheeky hockey player who likes to rile up Eva Adams. He has the sweetest side to him though as when Eva needs a place to stay, he volunteers his house.

Eva Adams is a cheerleader for the football team and she couldn't think of anything worse than spending any more time with Gavin King than she has to. However, when he is kind enough to let her and Henry, her pet duck (yes that is correct), stay with him, she starts to see a different side to him.

I loved Eva and Gavin's love story!! Eva seems so put together but when you learn more about her past and the part of herself she lost, my heart broke. I loved that she was able to share it with Gavin and be vulnerable with him.

Gavin - THIS MAN!! He is so hot and his sexy side!!! I WAS BLUSHING!!!
I am always a sucker for a hockey player!!

Henry the pet duck!! I LOVED HER!!!! The way it made Eva bond with Gavin and his other flatmates was so sweet!

Overall I loved this book by Nikki and I cannot wait for more in the series!

Thank you so much to Wordsmith Publicity and Nikki for kindly sending me this arc to read and review. This review is my own honest opinion on the book :)

Firstly I want to say I recommend reading her wildcard series first because of the character development and Easter eggs from those books in this series. But it is also classified as a standalone, it’s just my personal preference. I love Nikki Halls writing and how she creates a world with all these characters and gives them all the development they deserve in each book. Her story lines are captivating and aren’t repetitive. The book kicks off with a one bed situation, good spice, great banter and he falls first. Gavin is a rebellious NHL bound hockey captain who has many secrets. Eva is a confident sassy cheer leader who finds herself with no where to live because of her pet duck. Gavin offers her a place to live not expecting her to take it. Living with three roommates he implements a no one in the house can touch or date her rule. Her father only agrees to pay for her last year of college if she agrees to go on dates he sets up. Gavin can’t stand this which pushes him to make his move but Eva is determined not to trust him because of her past. It was fun getting to know more about Eva after her appearance in the Wild Card series and her previous failed relationship. She seems so confident and perfect from the outside but Gavin is able to break down her walls. She has a manipulative Father who is giving her Ultimatums. Gavin is the rebellious hockey captain who lives a double life (literally, he has a Twin who he is constantly covering for) He is determined to hold on to his secrets and avoid getting kicked out of TU and lose his NHL contract over his brothers antics. Henry is a MDC (Main Duck character) and wins the hearts over everyone throughout the series
