There is but one book in the language admitted by all to be the standard one on "Sanctification." It is the work of the Reverend Walter Marshall, published in 1692, "The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification." It has at all times received the highest praise from men of eminence both as theologians and as saints; so writes The Reverend Andrew Murray in the Introduction to "Sanctification or The Highway of Holiness"In preparing this abridgment Rev. Murray adhered literally to the words of the author, while at the same time, in this introductory note, and in giving new headings to the chapters, endeavors to give the reader such a complete view of the argument of the original work, that he can at once see the relation of the larger extracts to the scope of the whole. Rev. Murray also made use of italics to indicate the thoughts which appear of special importance. The book is divided into fourteen chapters, with a DIRECTION at the head of each. In each of these Directions a practical truth is stated, of which the exposition and application follow.
Walter Marshall (15 June 1628 – August 1680) was an English, non-conformist Puritan pastor and author best known for his book on the Gospel Mystery of Sanctification, which has been praised as perhaps the single greatest work on sanctification ever composed.
I ordered this book after reading Abide in Christ by Andrew Murray. He referred to this book and it is easy to see why. Andrew Murray's inspiration was definitely from this book.
The author Walter Marshall's book was published in 1692! That was 84 years before America became a country. His style of writing definitely was of that era. If run on sentences drive you crazy, like they do me, then get ready. It seems like EVERY sentence just goes on for ever. It took a while to understand some of his points. At times it seems like he is going in one direction but after re-reading the sentences I got a better grasp of his thoughts. Also he used two words that were used differently in his era but it will definitely get your attention since it was in a religious setting: Anal and Virginity. Definitely had to reread those sentences.
Now for the good of the writing. It was a very deep 88 page book that made me stop and reflect on my spirituality. It was affirming at times but also challenging hard hitting on certain points. He was a no nonsense "English, non-conformist Puritan pastor and author best known for his book on the Gospel Mystery of Sanctification." (Wikipedia)
After reading this book I felt a certain growth in my spirituality and would recommend it but only to those that are disciplined and desiring in wanting a deeper spiritual life.
The continual emphasis on faith as OUR ONLY access to true sanctification and holiness is underscored in every page and every referenced verse. This book encourages the reader to enter into God's way of sanctification through faith. I would recommend this book to all those who would walk to n the Spirit through faith.
