Every woman lives by a code, whether she realizes it or not. It informs how she treats others and herself, how much she expects of herself, and how far she is willing to go in order to find success. But is the code we're living by truly helping us create the lives of purpose and fulfillment we desire? Or are we sacrificing the deeper things for mere achievement?
In this inspiring book, Sophia A. Nelson calls women to live out a powerful life code that will lead them to purposeful and successful lives. With the wisdom that comes from experience, Nelson reveals to women
· the true meaning of "having it all" · how to take better care of their minds, bodies, and souls · how to achieve professional excellence without compromising their values · how to find lasting love and purpose in life beyond their accomplishments · how to navigate the sisterhood of women, to build collaboration rather than competition · how to heal from past hurts, rejection, and life's inevitable storms · and much more
The Woman Code is a way of living, of navigating life's challenges, and of interacting positively with other women. It's a way of pursuing our dreams and our deepest desires. It reveals a universal and timeless set of principles of the mind, body, and spirit that help women balance the demands of work, home, family, and friendship. The Woman Code not only calls on women to practice purpose in their lives, it shows them how to do it with grace.
Before I begin, I want to disclose to anyone who might read my review of this book that I only read books I believe I will enjoy. I never select a title unless I have some confidence it will result in a positive review. I honestly wish I had not picked this particular title to review. The Woman Code has a who’s who of endorsements. Big names have given high praise to this book! I was so hopeful in its message. Sadly, I found it disappointing and difficult to finish. My problem with this book began early in its pages. In Chapter 1, “Code 1,” author Sophia Nelson writes about knowing your value. She lists three keys to unlocking your value as a woman, the third of which is, “Shift your thinking to put you at the top of your list.” In later pages she explains this key and her explanation helps me a little with the check I felt inside about reading such advice. However, later in the book I feel like the “Me, Myself, and I” doctrine is preached and promoted. Of course there are instances where people put others needs before their own in a way that is harmful. But as a Christian, a mother, a wife, a sister, and a friend I cannot believe the “Me, Me, Me,” doctrine as a value that deserves an investment. Really, aren’t Servant Leaders the best kind of leaders? Woman or man, a person who puts others needs above their own is leading on an entirely different level. A higher one. Beyond the aforementioned issue I have with this title, there is some value in later chapters. Specifically, I do appreciate Section III The Spiritual Codes. Sophia Nelson offers some sound advice on the perils of gossip, apologizing, and controlling your thought life. It is good advice and a great reminder. Just to be clear, I hate giving bad reviews. If you were to read all of my reviews, you would believe I loved every book I have ever read. So, I am sorry I did not care for this book. I am certain the author had the best of intentions. I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I have not been compensated.
Sophia is showing us 20 powerful keys to unlock our lives. makes a difference in life if we are bought up knowing our life is worth something, but growing up being told you are worthless you will more likely as adult feel like you have no value. What we think of ourselves is very valuable. First Code is value. There are 19 more keys discussed in this book. Peace, Treat, Authenticity, These are personal codes. Accountability, Guard, Resilient, Age, These are Emotional codes. Gossip, Apologize, Thoughts, Cut and untie, these are the Spiritual codes. Don't think like a man, Lead, Brave, Lift up, these are the Professional codes. Know your row, Practice love, laughter and loyalty, Courageous, and Reconnect, these are the Relational codes. Each of these codes Sophia will discuss what we should do for each one. Then there is also a nice study guide at the end of the book. I really liked this book. Would even make a great ladies study group book.
"The woman code: 20 powerful keys to unlocking your life" by Sophia A Nelson is one of those books every woman should read atleast once in their life time. Once you have read the book you will start seeing the "codes" t work and you will realise ypu have been living some of these codes and you will know where to improve.
I just finished reading The Woman Code by Sophia A. Nelson, which offers 20 Powerful Keys to Unlock Your Life. Sophia offers encouragement and challenges in this book to get you motivated for success. Women tend to look at their friends and husbands/boyfriends (or all men in general) for validation and purpose. We forget that there is so much more to us than who we marry or who we are associated with. In truth, God created us all as unique individuals with a purpose for our lives. We can only find that purpose when we dig deep inside and begin to know ourselves better than anyone else knows us and better than we know them. This requires balance, boundaries, priorities, and a relationship with our Creator.
The book starts off talking about how we all live by a code whether or not we realize it. The code resides deep inside us and naturally governs what we do. We have values, morals, things that we will tolerate and things we will not. There are certain types of people we blossom around and certain types that deplete our soil. We have things in our past we would like to forget and things that we never want to forget. These things, good or bad, make us who we are but they don't have to define us.
Say you made a really bad mistake. Does that make you marked for life? You cheated on a test or you were responsible for getting someone fired from a job. Does that make you a cheater, liar, or enemy to all co-workers? No! What if you've had one failed relationship after another? Does that mean you will never have a successful one? No!
What about the opposite? Say you did something wonderful. Maybe you were prom queen or you made the highest score on your SAT or graduated from college with the highest honors. Does that mean that for the rest of your life you can never fail? Are you put under pressure by others to achieve the greatest accolades for the rest of your life? No! All you need to do is what God created you to do. Your successes and failures are not labels you wear for the rest of your life.
How can we avoid getting stuck in a trap of failures and pressure to succeed? We need to learn how to operate within the code of our lives. This includes our personal codes, emotional codes, spiritual codes, professional codes, and relational codes.
What happens when things get out of balance in our lives? The Code doesn't work right and we begin to focus on our failures, pressures, stresses, and anything else that threatens to take us down.
The Woman Code is a book that can help women restore balance in their lives, help them learn to guard their hearts, and help them find and live within their purpose. It can help women be better wives, mothers, friends, daughters, sisters, co-workers, bosses, and ministers. If you are struggling to balance your life, I recommend this book to you.
I received The Woman Code from Revell/Baker Publishing Group in exchange for a fair review.
I found this book rather short on actually delivering what the title indicates. Having powerful strategies would definitely be valuable, but this book only provides twenty basic common sense steps for someone stuck deep in their troubles and locked in their past with no clue how to move forward. The aim of the book is not what is contained inside. With proper aim and a more appropriate title would earn this book another star or two. I received an ARC through Revell Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion.
Sophia A. Nelson in her new book, “The Woman Code” published by Revell gives us 20 Powerful Keys to Unlock Your Life.

Sophia Nelson believes that everything women need to lead the lives they want is already inside there inside sort of locked away. Ms. Nelson has twenty keys to unlock all that inner potential. The book is divided into 5 sections: The Personal Codes, The Emotional Codes, The Spiritual Codes, The Professional Codes and The Relational Codes. Each section contains four of each code. At the back of the book there is a study guide to be used with a small group or individually. I think this is a great resource for all women and would be a great gift for friends and family.

If you are looking for motivation on how to build your confidence, build your “front row,” and learn what your value is this may be the book you are looking for to start you on that journey.
The Woman Code has twenty codes that shares information to prompt thought provoking questions regarding how to live a more fulfilled life with a code created for women only. A few topics include Knowing Your Value, Peace with Your Past, and Separating from Frenemies. Another topic, Know Your Front Row, discusses who is in your inner circle that gives sound advice, celebrates you, how to spot frenemies, and how to remove wrong people from your front row. Each code chapter ends with Living the Code Points or Questions and Key Words related to that code to instill and emphasize what you have read. Additionally, the book contains The Spiritual Codes that covers gossip, apologizing, choosing your words wisely, and The Professional Codes covering leadership and the workplace.
The Woman Code is for women who have not yet reached that position in their lives where they are not questioning self-worth, have not let go of the past, have not quite let go of frenemies and surrounded themselves with positive women who encourage and uplift one another instead of criticize. Knowing my value and worth, letting go of the past and frenemies, I did it all by reading God’s Word, prayer, and with the support of my “front row” (inner circle) which consists of four women. The Woman Code did not quite live up to the hype “Powerful Keys to Unlock Your Life” because I regard these pointers as living and learning every day you wake up and face the world with the Lord by your side.
Concurrently or after reading The Woman Code, use your bible with a good concordance to learn and know what His Word says regarding each section and topic for further understanding. This book is recommended for women who have not reached the next peaceful plateau in life of self-assuredness and confident faith.

Fans of female empowerment books, look out, there's a new book for you! Former White House correspondent, journalist, and TV personality, Sophia A. Nelson, delivers a book that will help you unlock your life with twenty powerful keys. Split into five sections: personal, emotional, spiritual, professional, and relational code, Nelson attempts to help readers find and believe in simple truths that will help raise womankind up. Before we can be better spouses or mother, we have to be better for ourselves. The self comes first, otherwise we can't properly take care of and appreciate the ones we love. The crux of Nelson's beliefs, is that we need to know our value as woman. Once you know your value and potential you can make peace with your past and learn to live authentically. Each chapter, or key, explains several concepts, gives "real life examples" and then has a section on how to "live the code." At the end there also key words and discussion questions in the back (it would make for a thought provoking book club). Overall, I learned some quality things, I definitely think that it's a good guide to empower and inspire confidence in woman. I felt that many of the keys were obvious (maybe they just were to me) and themes could get very repetitive but overall, I commend Nelson on creating a book that many women will eat up. Hopefully it inspires several generation of woman to do more with their lives.
I received this book for free from Revell Reads in return for my honest, unbiased opinion.
If this book had been published for the general self-help market, I would have given it a higher rating. It was published by a publisher which has been in the Christian genre market for decades. None of the codes and suggestions Nelson makes are related to Christianity, God, or the power of the Holy Spirit for transformation. This book is very self oriented. Think of yourself first. With respect to people that you meet, it is not about them, it is about you and what you can learn from them. These kinds of suggestions are not in line with biblical precepts. See my complete review at http://bit.ly/1zeYe2f. I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
I picked this one up at the library on a bit of a whim; it's OK, probably a bit better than I expected. (I am pretty sure it drew my attention with its silly title and subtitle.) Sophia Nelson offers some basic "how to live" guidelines, such as "Do not gossip" and "Don't cut what you can untie." I wouldn't call them "20 Powerful Life Strategies" so much as generally what a person of good character would aim to do.
It was a good read. It's mostly what I thought should be common sense by treating people well and being a decent human being but sadly most of what she says isn't common sense hence why the book is needed...
Popular TV commentator, former White House correspondent, and motivational speaker reveals the 20 principles that will help women achieve their dreams, purpose, and destiny.
About the Author:
Sophia A. Nelson is an award-winning author and award winning journalist. She is also a highly sought-after corporate leadership trainer and motivational speaker. Nelson has a national platform that is making strides to help women lead more fulfilling and powerful lives in and out of the workplace.
My Review:
The Woman Code is a book that any woman can use to help inspire her to be better than she was yesterday. I believe from my reading of the book that the author is trying to encourage us as women to reach beyond our circumstances to become strong women. Gone are the days as the author relates, where we are to be outdone by our male counterparts. We as a woman, or the known weaker sex can and will rise above our male counterparts or at least give them an honest fight for a certain job or position.
In her book she has devised a code that she hopes to give to all woman to hopefully reach beyond their potential into an ever growing and ever changing individual. The book is divided into 5 sections, with each containing 4 of each code. There is also a study guide in the back to use with a small group or you can use on your own. The author has chosen to share with young women or any woman for that matter the morals, rules, and insights that has guided her life and she felt that they could inspire us all.
Her book is one of many statistics and comes highly favored among many women, professional types. While it seems like a good, effective book overall---I feel it only applies to this type of women. If you would like to learn more you can at this link.
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from Revell.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I have to admit, I had a very hard time getting through this book. I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting from this book, but I can't honestly say I liked anything about it.
I can remember in school when we had to write long papers on a subject, but I could only come up with one very short thought about the whole thing. I would get creative and just rewrite my thought in as many creative ways I could think of. I feel like this is what the author did with this entire book.
The book is broken down into five sections, or codes. The table of contents serves as a basic outline for the entire book, but I feel like the outline could actually stand without the rambling paragraphs to expound on it.
I really hate giving bad reviews, but I just couldn't find anything I loved about this book.
Right now, I'm in a rebuilding me period of my life. It's not an easy place to be, but I'm happy that I'm at a place where I want to do it. So often, as I fight the Bipolar demons, it's easy to just lay down and wait it out. This time, I'm taking babysteps to fight back and to find me in all of it. As part of that, I've been reviewing cookbooks, healthy living books and yes, self-help books. As someone with a degree in psychology, it's hard to resist that last category. This book is really meant for those of us who have come from dark places, not necessarily for those who have already found themselves. Even within the first chapter, I found myself nodding. I know that this is a book that will go up on my "self reference shelf."
Sophia Nelson delivers a message of resilience and strength for women to live a life of faith and purpose. This former White House reporter and Congressional Committee counsel, shares the 20 codes -- or beliefs -- that she lives by to inspire women to live with love, compassion and gratitude.
Her codes include making peace with your past, guarding your heart, aging gracefully, being brave and choosing your thoughts and words wisely. She relates personal stories and urges women to treasure the sisterhood of the women in their lives, who she says truly are gifts to be appreciated.
Each chapter concludes with key words to help summarize the content. Much of what Sophia shares in the codes is sound practical advice for all women to follow.
When I read the information about this book, I was excited to dive in. However, only a few pages in I realized this wasn't exactly what I had imagined. While the writing style is easy to read, I missed the scriptural backbone I enjoy in books like this. The Woman Code is excellent for those who are not interested in lots of God talk or being constantly confronted with scripture. There are a lot of great points made in the book and I can see it has great cross-over potential for the secular market.
I recommend this book to women who enjoy motivational books without too much Christian content.

This book makes a lot of good points but it's definitely only for someone who is really struggling in a majority of the areas or "codes" brought up. I found a lot of the chapters very shallow and not too in depth or challenging. It's a good summary book and would probably be good for a woman's small group as it probably would create a lot of discussion but just as a daily read, not my cup of tea. Honestly, I didn't even finish it.
The Woman Code is an interesting book. The author explains that she believes that there are 20 keys ideas about yourself that help you live a better life, including others that you have ties with. The book is informative and easy to follow. I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book for the purpose of a review and all opinions are my own.
An interesting read that covers important topics I've had to relearn as an adult women. I like the chapter about ways we might be still trying to be like men in order to fit in or get ahead, because it is in general the easiest path. But listening to your own heart and acting authentically is what the world needs too!

Nelson helps women create a road map of timeless values coupled with modern-day approaches to help us face the challenges of our time.

From the Back Cover
Your Key to Unlocking a More Fulfilling Life
Every woman lives by a Code, whether she realizes it or not. The Code is as old as time. It has been practiced for thousands of years, quietly, among the sisterhood of women. This Code is her road map to living, a guidepost residing deep within her spirit. It governs her romantic relationships, friendships, family ties, career choices, and personal sense of well-being and value. And when her Code is out of balance, her life is out of balance.
Drawing from her personal faith and from her experience in the business world, Sophia Nelson explores 20 keys to unlocking the life you want, such as:
• Knowing your innate value and worth • Teaching people how to treat you • Making peace with your past • Learning to lead from within • Lifting other women as you climb
The Woman Code helps women to honor themselves while navigating the demands of work, home, family, and friendship. It not only calls on women to practice purpose in their lives, it shows them how to do it with grace.
THE WOMAN’S CODE is a book for all women—that might reach you at the core and help you how to get past the personal roads you’ve already traveled and to navigate the current and future ones. The author shares she was going through a hard time as she sat down to write this book, but never-the-less, she has some really thought-provoking ideas in it. Such as: “We all endure different trials, tribulations and triumphs. But in the end we all hope to get through them intact. Whole. Better than before.” Or, “I accepted what was lost. I made peace with what is now past. And I have learned to be grateful for what and who I still have left.”
The problems I have with the book is because it promotes the “Me, Myself, and I” lifestyle. She states, put yourself at the top of the list. In my opinion, it’s not about “me.” It’s about “Him.” The whole book also seems to repeat the same basic ideas multiple times.
This could be a powerful message for today’s modern woman, to find peace and happiness from the inside-out. Available in Kindle, hardback, or MP3-CD.
First off let me say, I really wanted to enjoy this book. It comes so highly recommended my mainly prominent people that I was sure I would enjoy it fully. I read the sleeve and the book sounded powerful and insightful. So when it arrived, I was excited to get to read this book. Too quickly though I became very discourage by the message the author was sending to her readers.
As a Christian, as a mother, friend and a follower of Christ I cannot support this book. From Chapter one and throughout the entire book the authors message to unlocking the joy in your life is to put yourself first! The main focus of the book is based on a Me, Me, Me and I, I, I approach that is preached throughout that it becomes very difficult to read. I found the song " Just Me, Myself and I" going through my head as I read. As Christians we are called to be servants, putting others first, not ourselves.
Since this is a Christian book and a Christian publishing company promotes this book I think it should be stated that this book does not references Christ and there are no scripture references, but instead promotes Christian principles that you might find in the Bible. It is more of a self-help type of book.
There were sections of the book that I did enjoy and examples of putting others first, but it was not the central theme. I enjoyed The Spiritual Code's that are found in Chapter 3 and parts of the Relational Code. The author has some sound, biblical advice regarding gossiping, controlling your tongue, be quick to apologize when you have hurt someone or gone against biblical principles, and learning to have healthy relationships and avoiding toxic ones.

From the beginning pages of in this book, I struggled with it. I guess the author lost some of the confidence I had in her to start with. The book was coming from a Christian author and the book sounded like it had some very practical truths to impart. I've read a number of marriage books that discuss things about how to become a woman of God--but I wanted to find some books that approached that topic more specifically.
Early on in the book, Nelson makes a statement: "Shift your thinking to put you at the top of your list." While I will agree with where she was coming from in this statement, it niggled in the back of my mind as I continued to move through the rest of the book, and it made me think hard about other things that were said in this book. Afterall, shouldn't living for God be top of our list? And isn't a servant's heart something to strive for? To me, that just seemed contradictory, and was something that quickly made me less excited about what Nelson had to say.
With that said, most of what is in this book does seem to line up with the Bible. One of the good parts of The Woman Code is that it is so practical. Nelson even breaks down what an authentic apology should look like and what it should accomplish, for example. This is where the books shines.
For me, looking for books such as this to aid in my own growth in Christ, it left me feeling a bit wishful. While there are a handful of Biblical references and quotes, I wish Nelson would have drawn on that more.
All in all, it wasn't a bad book, it just wasn't what I was hoping for.

I should have expected as much from a self-help book aimed strictly at women, but I found myself getting angry every time I began listening to this audio book. There are a lot of very helpful tid-bits hiding throughout the text (which is why I kept going), but by the time I got to 30 min left, I just couldn't do it any more and fast-forwarded through the rest.
The fact that the author assumes that her viewpoints are shared amongst all women is ridiculous. Between that and the constant "women are expected to do such & such while men get to do whatever they want"-type commentary just reinforces old stereotypes and thought processes regarding the roles of men and women in society. Regardless of how much Sophia is trying to help women, the fact is that an us vs. them mentality will do nothing to help a struggle (whether real or perceived) between men & women.
Sophia seems like a very sweet and wonderful lady who went into this with the best of intentions & I have no doubt that this book will strike a chord (and be wildly helpful) with women who are of the same mentality as her. However, this is not a book that I can get behind strictly because of all the unintentional sexist comments that pervade the entire text. It feels very much like 2 steps forward & 1 giant leap backwards with every chapter which is very unfortunate as I had high hopes going into this one.
PS: I am a woman and I would like equality, not a reversal of dominance in society.
Having read what I did in this book really spoke to me, it was deep and insightful. I couldn’t stop reading, but had to put the book down because it was overloading my mind.
The author, speaking from her experiences, was very, how should I say it?, right down to the point. The way she wrote everything out was encouraging, helpful and spoken from experience.
I can’t wait to finish the book and put these codes to work in my own life. Having had some bad experiences in life, this book struck close to the heart.
From what I did read, I would encourage every female to read this book, even if they think that they don’t have any issues to deal with.

Our upbringing, our DNA, our experiences, and our environment all make up our Code. Who are we? Why do we think the way we think? Why do we act the way we act? Our Code directs our decisions and our relationships. When our Code is out of balance, so is our life. This book is helpful for evaluating our personal codes to decipher who we are and move out of ruts in which we get stuck, to live life moving forward, not backward. The book encourages us to learn our value and make peace with our past, living authentically, aging gracefully, and being accountable. There are also many useful tips and stories. The author does a nice job keeping the reader engaged and encouraged.
Thank you, Revell Publishers, for the complimentary copy of this book for my unbiased opinion.
I think every woman should read this. I think every black woman, especially, should read this. It was smartly written by one of our own, written with the spirit of love and inclusion that I wish we celebrated more. In a time when 'reading' someone and 'throwing shade' and 'cussing people out' seem to be the in thing, it would be really nice to know that we still were inherently loving of our sisters and friends and wanting to see them succeed. The 20 Powerful Life Strategies to Navigate today's challenges include things like learning to apologize properly (I needed this), never cutting what you can untie, and treated your sister friends with the grace and love and loyalty that you would want for yourself. Being a good friend attracts good friends to you, and we should all be so lucky.

--My thoughts. I think there is so much in here, I am going to be giving my girls each a copy for Christmas so they can highlight and underline and mark the heck out of for themselves. I loved each chapter and think it is so important as they become young ladies that they discover and find out how to build themselves and each other up. I especially loved the part about gossip. Women love to do it but it is bad ladies. Really not good for us. Also important is to apologize. You don't find many people apologizing these days.

This book is one that I found in LGA airport- they have a great bookstore downstairs in the American Airlines terminal. I cannot recommend this book enough-- and it struck me on so many levels in my personal life and professional life not only will I recommend this to every woman I know but I am going to re-read it on my vacation next week. She covers topics like knowing your value and your worth- and how you teach people to treat you.....it discusses leadership and integrity....it's just a fantastic read- I finished the book on the plane if that tells you how much it drew me in. Cannot recommend it enough.
Interesting for a self-help book aimed at women. It's not too preachy and gave some good advice. Some parts of the book seem to come from a lot of personal experience which was somewhat annoying, but was likely necessary to explain to make the reader understand the point. The book was also a very easy read. No troublesome quizzes and whatnot and it even highlights some keywords. I think that women in general would find this to be a valuable read.
The book started off good and by the middle of the book, the author spent too much time dwelling on an incident where someone hurt her. I put the book down for over a year but when I picked it up again, I couldn't put it down. It spoke to me. I had entered a different phase in life and it helped me gain perspective on where I was. This book is great for a book club discussion.
