The State of Israel was established in 1948, and from the very beginning, it faced war with neighboring Arab nations. Somehow, despite the fact that its newly created army was greatly outnumbered, the War of Independence from 1948 to 1949 saw Israel and its borders secured. However, the peace that followed didn’t last long.
In 1956, Israel was at war again, this time allied with Britain and France during the Suez Crisis, with an invasion that saw parts of the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula occupied by Israeli forces. In 1967, Israel found itself in another conflict, alone and facing a coalition of Arab states that included Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. What became known as the Six-Day War provided Israel with a stunning military victory that saw it occupying most of the Sinai Peninsula and other territories, including the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and the Gaza Strip.
Just six years later, in 1973, Israel would face the greatest challenge to its very existence. Egypt and Syria launched massive simultaneous invasions intended to recapture territory occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War. Israel was taken completely by surprise by this attack, launched on the day of one of the most important Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur. Israeli intelligence, which had proved so effective in previous conflicts, failed to provide any warning, and the armed forces of Israel were completely unprepared to face this onslaught on two fronts. This is the story of the Yom Kippur War.

Good description of an obscure (to me) historical incident
This book gives a good description of the situation in the Middle East prior to the Yom Kippur War. It discusses the tensions in the area including their genesis. The actual discussion of the war itself was minimal but effective. It just be nerve wracking living in a country continually besieged by fanatical neighbors.
Surprisingly good in that it is almost empty of wokeness so often present in a politically charged subject such as this. The background given is basically clean, factual and as much as can be, depoliticized. There is no hint of a divine hand involved in Israel's unlikely victories though it is hard to fathom their continued survival without help from above. Still, all in all, a good read.
Good info about the Yom Kippur war . Another testament to Israeli fighting prowess. Though not as successful as the 6 day war, they prove formidable as both an aggressor as well as a defender.
These series of Hourly History books (Arab-Israeli War, The Suez Crises, The Six Day War and Yom Kippur War) are informative and very relevant of events that are still occurring in the region. I appreciate the fact that this series gets right to the point of why the conflict appears to be never-ending.
I knew there were conflicts in the middle east when growing up. I didn't know this war was the reason for the oil embargo of the 70's. This was a nice read for me.
I enjoyed reading this book, for its overall view of Israel’s history from conception to the present day. However to get a clearer understanding of what was briefed over it would be helpful to read further… 🪖Great 🔥 Read 🧞♀️🙂
I can’t understand recent history if I don’t have a good grasp on the last few decades. Very informative but not overwhelming. Would, and will, recommend.
