Ashlyn Rivers left her cheating fiancé behind and moved to Ardor Creek to revamp her life. Done with men in general, she has plenty to focus on, like building her new business and renovating her house for the local haunted homes tour. Falling in love is definitely not on the agenda.
Scott Grillo lost his family in a tragic accident several years ago. Still processing the loss, he throws himself into his contracting business, pushing away the loneliness and heartache.
When Ashlyn blazes into Scott’s life, he turns down her request to renovate her house, vowing to squelch the desire she stirs deep inside. But Ashlyn is a force to be reckoned with and Scott finds himself longing for her embrace each day she remains in Ardor Creek.
Can these two disillusioned souls reclaim their hearts and choose to love again?
Welcome to Ardor Creek, the small Pennsylvania town where love is in the air! If you like a grumpy hero and feisty heroine, this book is your jam. As with all of Ayla’s books, there’s a slight holiday theme, and Halloween ghosts play a part! The main character is a widower who discusses the loss of his family so please take note of this before reading. Settle in and fall in love with Ardor Creek today!
Ayla Asher is the pen name for a USA Today bestselling author who writes steamy fantasy romance under a different pseudonym. However, she loves a spicy, fast-paced contemporary romance too! Therefore, she's decided to share some of her contemporary stories, hoping to spread a little joy one HEA at a time.
She would love to connect with you on social media, where she enjoys making dorky TikToks, FB/IG posts and fun book trailers!
This was a wonderful contemporary romance that was just what I needed on a nice fall day! Ashlyn has given up a stressful corporate life in biotech pharmaceutical sales and used her savings to move to the house her grandmother left her in charming small-town Ardor Creek, Pennsylvania where she also plans to open a food trailer. Her house is in need of quite a few repairs, for which she turns to grumpy contractor, Scott, who is hiding a tragic past of his own. This was a wonderful slow-burn romance. So many delicious meals—I think the foodie in me gained several pounds while reading! As the seasons change, and they continue to work on their remodeling project together, Scott gradually begins to come out of his grief and deal with the loss of his family, and the NSA romance he and Ashlyn have agreed to becomes real. I particularly loved seeing Ashlyn confront sleazy ex, Robert. Girl. On. Fire. 🔥 And seeing her and Scott finally find their HEA was so worth it in the end. This was a lovely fall read!
Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.
I LOVE Ashlyn! She's tenacious, fiery, funny, friendly, and amazingly understanding. She comes to Ardor Creek with her own baggage but nothing that rivals Scott's. They have the very opposite of a meet-cute but it's absolutely perfect! I love the dynamics and their chemistry is palpable. The book is full of heartbreak, frustration, humor, and marvelous steam!
I love the narrators, Kai Kennicott & Wen Ross, and the editing was well done. I love when the character voices remain constant throughout, regardless of whose chapter they are in. Example: the chapter POV is Ashlyn's but Scott's part of a conversation is delivered by Wen instead of Kai pretending to be the male lead.
This book is truly charming. The characters are mature individuals who openly express their thoughts and feelings, adding a refreshing authenticity to the plot. It explores complex themes such as widowhood, guilt, and second chances. I must also mention that it's a "spicy" book that managed to make me blush on more than one occasion.
The voices of the narrators portraying Ashlyn and Scott are beautiful and add a special touch to the story. The auditory narration enhances the reading experience, immersing us even more in the emotional plot. The connection between the characters becomes even more palpable through their voices, creating an immersive atmosphere that makes each moment even more memorable.
*** 3.5 stars *** ARC received in exchange of an honest review.
Okay so the story was really good. Plotting too was good. I just wish the dialogues weren't too cheezy...yup they were.
I loved the characters. They both are independent and successful in their own way. The best part about Ashlyn and Scott is they are very very honest....to themselves and to each other. They never tried to manipulate each other's feelings or even try to hide theirs. Maybe because they are mature and above 30.
The storyline of the poem is something I am drawn to. Their pasts have been told in detail which was a plus point. All other plotting too was really good.
Now comes the writing style. I've enjoyed the author's previous work but unfortunately this was not one of her best work mainly of the writing style. I loved rest of the aspects of the book except the writing style. Some things were rushed while other were more detailed. So, it didn't work for me.
Note: At the time of this review all of Ayla Asher’s books are available via KoboPlus, all the Ardor Creek books are on sale via Chirp, & the ebook is free via Asher’s website, Amazon& Kobo.
This is book 1 in Ayla Asher’s Ardor Creek series.
I think Asher did a great job tackling some tough topics with sensitivity while ultimately bringing a sexy love story to life. After all Ashlyn and Scott have been through they both deserved this second chance at love. Normally, I don’t like when the angst is drawn out quite this much, but here it felt appropriate. Scott is working through a maelstrom of emotions and Ashlyn is trying to fight for what (and who) she wants while still honoring her own dreams and needs.
Along the way we get tension, romance, grief, and a lot steam. I enjoyed the Ardor Creek townsfolk, especially Peter and Carrie. Ultimately Scott and Ashlynn get their HEA. I loved the glimpse a few years in the future epilogue. Great ending to their story with a tease at future books.
I’m looking forward to Carrie & Peter’s book, Illusions Unveiled.
Narration: I enjoyed the duet narration by Kai Kennicott & Wen Ross. Lots of emotions in this story and they did a terrific job of bringing Ashlyn & Scott to life.
I really enjoyed this book. I've not read a small town romance for a while so it was nice to dive back into one! Boy did this book pull at my heart strings ♥️ This couple is so refreshing, maybe because they are older? But they communicate with each other, are mature and know what they want. Scott is a widow and Ashlyn has packed up her life and moved because her fiancee cheated on her. There is steam, lol moments, a great plot, brilliant characters that I couldn't help but fall in love with them, even the side characters! I'm looking forward to reading the second book 😊
This is my favorite Ayla Asher book so far. I loved everything about this story. Ashlyn broke up with her cheating boyfriend and moved to a small town to restore a haunted house she inherited (yes there’s a bit of a paranormal undertone to the story that was an added bonus). Scott is the contractor who will renovate the property. He is a widower who also lost his daughter in an auto accident. These two souls go from hating each other, to dislike, to love, to passion and every evolution of their relationship feels so real. Their slow burn love is hot and their relationship involves some angst, groveling and a very satisfying ending. If you enjoy small town romance, second chance at love stories with older characters (in their 30s) then you must get this book. I listened to the audiobook version and I must say that Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross did an excellent job with the dual POV narration. It just added to the story and made it feel like I was watching a movie. The story is highly recommended and the narrators as well.
This is the first book in the Ardor Creek Series, a Small Town Romance. Ashlyn and Scott's enemies to lovers story is beautifully written, sweet, emotional, fun, and heartwarming. Ashlyn is a wonderful character, feisty, strong, smart, and independent. She rightly walked away from her unfaithful ex fiancé, Robert. I like the little paranormal side of the story, with her Grandma's presumably haunted house. Scott, a contractor, is handsome, sexy, and grumpy. His past is heartbreaking. They are two beautiful souls, mature, successful, loyal, honest, and reliable. They share a strong chemistry. This is a beautiful journey to love. Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross did a fantastic job with the duet narration. I love their voices together, and they are perfect as Ashlyn and Scott. This is a great team author/narrators. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to listen to Illusions Unveiled, Peter and Carrie's story, the next book in the Series.
I loved this book! And I am definitely a fan of the narrators for the audiobook!! I would recommend it to anyone and I can't wait for the others to come out on audio! For now I will settle on reading the rest of this series on my Kindle!! Ayla you are amazing! This book was great! It has all the feels and it has real reactions to real situations. It gives all the feels.
Ashlyn recently resigned from her Manhattan corporate job, left her cheating ex, and moved to Ardor Creek into the home her grandmother bequeathed to her. She plans to renovate the house for the local haunted homes tour and start her own food truck business. Scott’s construction company is the best in town, so Ashlyn wants to work directly with Scott; however, he turns her down.
This month’s optional theme is Older Couple. I stretched the definition a bit and picked a story that features a widower and a love-burned city gal who is dealing with the loss of her beloved grandmother. Although they aren’t “older,” both have been around the block and have dealt with some heartache and loss.
Hearts Reclaimed is a decent second chance at love romance. I appreciated that once the pair started dating (or is it more friends with benefits?), they keep the line of communication open and have a mature outlook, especially when it comes to difficult feelings. That said, it took me a long time to warm up to Ashlyn. Her big city ways come across as entitled, rude, and pushy. I honestly don’t understand Scott’s attraction, although the author makes the case that he agrees to the contract for financial reasons. Even after she softens and apologizes, she still has an edge to her that rubbed me the wrong way.
The pair have a mutual attraction and find a common interest in running. This leads to a FWB situation, and feelings eventually are involved. Ashlyn’s ex makes a couple ugly appearances. Scott can’t give Ashlyn was she deserves emotionally, and then is hurt and upset when he assumes she’s moving on. It’s predictable but not boring. I do appreciate the author’s attention to the professional help Scott receives, and even sitting in on a session or two as he tries to figure things out.
Narration: The story is shared via third person POV, with duet style narration. Most of the story is alternating between Ashlyn and Scott, but there are POVs from Peter, Scott’s business partner. Kennicott has a firm, matter of fact feminine voice, with modifications for emotions. Ross has a deep voice which is great for the cranky Scott. Neither narrator does much to distinguish other characters, with slight distinction between characters of the same gender. At times, the narrators add sounds to their performance, with laughter being most common. However, when things get a little hot and heavy and Scott growls and Ashlyn moans. Both sound goofy and out of place.
In the end, Hearts Reclaimed is simple and easy to listen to. The story is okay: not bad but not great. And it gets another book off my TBR.
The story line has great potential. If it would have been told by the character’s POV instead of a narrator, I would have liked it better. Also, I felt like sometimes the words used were great synonyms but didn’t fit the essence of the story.
OVERALL: I’ve read most of Asher’s Manhattan Holiday series, and this is book 1 in the Ardor Creek series. I was very excited to start this one since I enjoyed the Manhattan Holiday series quite a bit. I love the author’s note at the beginning. Alright, so before I get too much into the specifics below, I’d like to just address that Asher is really impressing me. She’s taken some of my least favorite tropes (secret baby in Manhattan Holiday 3, and here with widows finding love again), and she’s handled them really well. I’m not a huge fan of over-the-top drama and conflict in my romance books, and these are perfect. But moreso, while yes, they are HEA, they feel “real.” They don’t feel like fairy tales. They feel like real people and real plot points that are handled well by responsible adults who (*shocked Pikachu*) communicate with each other! As a woman hovering in my 40s, I appreciate this very much.
STORYLINE: I had a little chuckle when Ashlyn asserted that she was not in the right headspace for a relationship (yeah yeah…. suuuuuuuure *wink emoji*). I love the woman-from-the-city coming to the small town, and I love that everyone in town talks to each other and knows everyone’s business. Here’s what I found a little odd though. I expected a slow-burn (and it is, in much of the book), and then some things felt a little rushed to me. Lastly, the sex scenes are really descriptive and very hot!
CHARACTERS: Scott is a man dealing with a lot of pain in his past that he is having trouble overcoming. He's a little grumpy (okay, a lot grumpy!), and I loved watching him melt for Ashlyn. Ashlyn is what I’d like to call an “Asher woman.” She is an independent woman who knows what she wants and communicates with her partner thusly. Their push-and-pull is fantastic to listen to. It’s clear there’s an attraction there, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.
NARRATION: This is the third book I’ve listened to with Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott, and I have to say, I would be happy to listen to any book being narrated by either one of them. Together, they make a truly wonderful team. I love the duet narration that Asher uses in her books. It really enhances the story and allows the listener to fall into the story fully.
This was my 3rd book by this amazing author. To be honest, I had just finished one and pulled this one up not realizing it was the same author. As I read through the chapters, again was I amazed at the depth of the character development and the multiply back stories, I realized it was Ms. Asher’s talented story writing.
This novel has has a very spunky heroine named Ashlyn, who came to Ardor Creek to live after having a hectic but successful career in Big Pharm sales. A very tough field. Ashlyn’s Grandmother had passed and left her a home. Her ex-fiancé was out of her life. It was a wonderful exodus, enjoy it, the author writes strong woman characters. Ashlyn comes to Arbor Creek in Pennsylvania with a plan, for the her Gramma’s house and a food truck.
She was prepared financially and researched the best contractor for the remodel the home would need. Enter our hero, who is not the friendliest man and with good reasons. Time is spent to careful develop his character, he too understands loss. His secretary becomes friends with Ashlyn, and he has an accountant whom you get both of their back stories which means I will be ready another book today!
Their story begins and it’s full of emotion, laughs, growth but above everything HONEST! I don’t want to give to spoilers so you will have to read.
There is some hot steamy romance so if that’s your cup of tea you may want to pass, but it does not take over the story but adds to intimacy that is needed to grow and face the ghosts in your past. This story does not fail you or leaves you questioning why something wasn’t addressed or rushed.
I will be reading this series! I hope you enjoy the book. Stay safe, stay home if you can. This is a great book to read during the pandemic, and it can totally take you out of your world and cozy into their lives. Enjoy!
Hearts Reclaimed by Ayla Asher Narrated by Kai Kennicott, Wen Ross series Ardor Creek #1
What do you do when you find your fiance cheating on you? You start your life over. Ashlyn is off and running with a new dream, ready to start her local haunted tours and brand her food truck. Love definitely is not in the cards. She does need some help with the renovation though. Hiring Scott Grillo is a must. Recommended as the best, she seeks out this widow to help her get her new business in order. He is not ready to move on from the death of his family. But she is irresistible. Friends with benefits til the end of he renovation is the hope. But will it be the reality? Will love bloom? Will these two find their second chance at happiness? I love Ayla Asher. She is a writer that seems to call to my heart. She knows how to create her characters and make me invest my feelings and need to find out their destiny. Scott and Ashlyn are both hurt, and their journey is not an easy one. There are difficult moments, some totally frustrating and others so sweet I had to smile. It's a beautiful story and I can't wait to see what else is happening in Ardor Creek.
Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross tell us this story with duet narration. It's my favorite style for these two. Their chemistry melds into the story, and you can feel every emotion they put out there. It's real and believable. I loved their performance.
Heartfelt Story ❤️ - such an Amazing Listen - Audiobook Review 🎧 Ashlyn moved to Ardor creek after her grandma passed away and moved into her house to renovate it. She left behind her past in the big city and her douche of an ex-fiancé to start a new life. I love Ashyln! She is a strong, independent woman, that knows exactly what she wants in life and isn't afraid to say what she wants and go after it. She wants Scott, the best contractor in town, to update her house and when she asks him, he first refuses. The book follows Ashyln and Scott getting to know each other and Ashlyn finding out about Scott losing his family in an accident 5 years ago. I love the character development and the turns in the story. I just fell in love with how they both handled the heartache and how they move forward to be with each other. I loved the other characters in the book too. I also found myself laughing out loud at parts while I was listening to the look. Wen and Kai and 2 of my favorite narrators and they do not disappoint here! They bring the story alive as they always do! I really loved this book and Ashley and Scott's romance and can't wait for the next book! I highly recommend this book!
I was given an ALC in return for an honest review.
Put simply, I loved it! This was a fabulous listen (narrated by my favourites Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott) and tells the story of Ashlyn who has given up her job in a stressful corporate world and has used her savings to move to the house left to her by her grandmother in the wonderful new world of Ardor Creek, Pennsylvania. The house is in need of renovation and she asks contractor Scott Grillo to quote for the work. Scott is hiding a tragic past of his own and at first wants little to do with the new lady in town. However Ashlyn is persistent and starts to win Scott round. This was a wonderful slow-burn romance. As they continue to work on the remodeling project together, Scott gradually begins to deal with the loss of his family and starts to fall for Ashlyn. Watching them fall in love was simply lovely and there was definite heat between the sheets. A perfect antidote to the madness of the real world around us in 2020. I hope there's more to come from Ardor Creek!
My favorite thing about this story is Ashlyn Rivers. She's been through a bad breakup and has decided to swear off men for a while. Until she can't resist Scott Grillo.
What I did like about her though is that she was honest with herself and Scott about what she wanted and what she needed.
Scott is still working to deal with letting go of his guilt while also grieving the loss of his wife and daughter. A wife who was his first love and soul mate. Then comes this woman that he can't resist even though he hasn't had a relationship, sexual or otherwise, since losing his wife.
I liked these two together because they had chemistry, but they were honest with their feelings while dealing with each other.
Can't wait to see what happens with the rest of the characters in this small town.
I received a free copy of this book on Stuff your Earbuds Day. I liked the story and the characters. The narrators (Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross) are great and I enjoyed them in other books before. They really brought the story to life.
Why 4 instead of 5 stars? While I liked the story, I didn’t love the book. It’s however hard to explain why. 🤔 The best way to describe is that there are details missing which makes it harder to connect with the characters and the stories. Like with her ex, that part isn’t really resolved. And when Scott gets angry and drunk, I kinda get why but more from the inner workings of his mind would have helped me truly understand and accept his behavior. Same goes for when Ashlyn break ups. It kinda makes sense but not completely.
This was a great story! Ashlyn moves to her grandmother’s house to remodel and start over and hire sexy contractor Scott to do the job. Scott also has something in his past he is struggling with, the two become friends...this story was really good. Some of the narration was odd for the serious book, but overall it was good. If you like a HEA with heart and emotional story this book is for you. There is strong, mature language and a some pretty graphic love scenes.
I received a free copy in exchange of an honest review.
I really enjoyed everything about this book. All the characters and side characters were freaking amazing. What I loved the most was watching Ashlyn and Scott grow and work through their past. The beginning of their friendship/relationship was a little rocky but they could deny the connection they felt.
The book was sweet, funny and emotional. Both characters are completely different but are a perfect fit for each other. Definitely recommend if ur looking for a small town friends with benefits read!
Two people, both dealing with devastating issues, are brought together in the small Pennsylvania town of Ardor Creek. Will the friendship they forge be enough, or could they possibly find more...
Ayla Asher has written a very moving, and sometimes steamy, story of Ashlyn and Scott. The tragedies that they both endured are very real and they were expressed very well. I love how the relationship grew throughout the story.
Overall I thought the narration, by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross, was pretty well done. There was one minor issue that I had... The "laughs" that occurred throughout sounded forced and a bit fake. Not enough of an issue for me to stop listening, but more of a distraction.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
Hearts Reclaimed is a later in life, slow burn, small town, grumpy/sunshine contemporary romance. I really liked the characters. They were independent, mature, and true to who they are. The plot was good, the meet-cute was non traditional, and the chemistry between the two was palpable.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book, but felt there were issues with pacing where some parts were rushed and others slower.
Romance genre: contemporary Series: Ardor Creek Length: 167 pages
Plot: Ashlyn has moved back to her grandmother's hometown after inheriting her house, which she wants to fix up and add to the town's haunted house tour. Scott is the best contractor in town, but Ashlyn has to work really hard to convince him to do the work for her. He has been in a permanent grouch since his wife and daughter were killed in a car crash. But he's attracted to Ashlyn and they soon start an affair - sex only. Until it isn't.
Commentary: The heroine is pretty aggressive in pursuing Scott as a contractor and not much more subdued when it comes to pursuing him as a partner. Scott was pretty clueless though when it came to feelings - makes me wonder if that wasn't half the problem with his wife. But for all of her tenacity, Ashlyn was good at talking out her feelings in an honest, no-nonsense way. It helped that they were older (not old - still in their 30s!). This story was okay - not the most exciting, but still a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.
I Loved this story. The FMC was so feisty! I love that. They FMC and the MMC were a perfect match. There was even one point I was like oh HELL NO because it seemed like it wasn’t going to be a HEA. Good twist. I blinked my eyes and the book was over. I would definitely recommend the listen! NICELY DONE!! 🧚🏻♀️
This book had so many different elements than all of Ayla Asher's previous ones but it still was just as good! Just enough love, turmoil and independence for the main characters. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!
