Because of Love #2

Because of Them

Rate this book
Michael

My life is changing, and I’m not sure I like it. I’m definitely not ready for it.

My dad wants me to take over the family business, my mum wants me to settle down. And Audrey wants me to be the man she deserves. The man they deserve.

I want to be him too, but I keep messing up.

Audrey

Just when I thought I was settling into my new life, two little lines threw all my plans out the window.

I was building my career, adjusting to life as a single mum, and had no desire to ever change a dirty nappy again.

But plans change, just like I need Michael to.

Because of Them is a steamy romance about falling in love, fighting for it, and accepting the changes it brings. A standalone story, it is the second novel in Bookstagrammer Devon May’s Because of Love series.

This is book two in the Because of Love series and I am so happy we got Audrey & Michael’s book!

I won’t lie, I didn’t really vibe with Audrey in book one Because of Her but I LOVED her in this book. I loved the journey we went on with her rediscovering herself and how strong she became.

This story is accidental pregnancy done RIGHT!
NOT surprise pregnancy (because they are completely different) The way Audrey and our golden retriever MMC Michael have to navigate this new phase of life whilst also trying to figure out their feelings for each other was just everything 🥹

The fight against imposter syndrome, the angsty moments and the little twist I didn’t see coming 👏🏼

I loved the set up for the next book Because of Me too 👀 can’t wait for Amira and Noah’s story.

I loved this book, it was really good, it pulled me in and I just couldn't stop reading it.
Michael was just a sweetheart, I loved him. He wanted to show Audrey that he deserved her so he did everything he could to show her that. When she needed him, he was there, no questions asked, no matter what it was. Everything he did, he did with her in mind and his babies. He loved them all so much, Maisie too. Honestly, he was such a green flag, I want a Michael too.
Audrey was so good too. She was afraid to try with Michael because of the babies but at the same time, she couldn't deny how she felt. She was strong and independent but relying on Michael was the best decision she ever made.
I adored them together, they were couple goals, I am not even joking

I appreciate the honest and realistic approach the author used to tell this beautiful and moving accidental pregnancy romance.
Michael (the MMC) is not the usual book boyfriend. He is not instinctively good at everything he does. He has no idea what he's doing in his life, and the idea of having a family of his own truly scares him. But, despite it all, he is not running away. On the contrary, he is going to stay and figure it out. Why? Because his feelings for Audrey are genuine. Therefore, he is going to do everything he can to become a better man.
Michael and Audrey's relationship does not magically blossom just beacause they are having a baby. They don’t fall in love with one another just because they’re "forced" to do it. They work hard to build something lasting. And this is what ultimately makes their story a beautiful and inspiring one.

The accidental pregnancy part 10/10, she is pregnant at the start of the book and struggles with her emotions about the pregnancy and the relationship she has with the baby’s daddy and how to tell him.

The romance aspect is where this lacks for me. I feel like the main characters had a LOT of discussions they needed to have about their readiness for a new baby and his ability to step up and be part of their lives, but all of those discussions seem to happen off page. By the time I DNFed, it felt like huge chunks of their relationship were missing, making it hard for me to connect with them as a romantic pair.

I received and advanced copy and these are my thoughts:

I enjoyed this book. This was an interesting take on the accidental pregnancy trope, with a reverse age gap (Michael is 26 and Aubrey is 33). Michael and Aubrey have a “fun” relationship and things seem to be turning serious, until Michael freaks out and ghosts Aubrey. Aubrey is recently divorced and the mother to a 4 year-old daughter. When she finds out she’s pregnant, she’s faced with the fact that the baby’s father is a young bachelor - who seems to have commitment issues and is rather immature even for his age.

I liked how realistic and less “fluffy” Aubrey and Michael’s relationship was. Even though he freaked out and ran (before they knew Aubrey was pregnant), once he learnt he was going to be a father, he was committed to being there for Aubrey and his baby. His character grows tremendously but also takes a few wrongs turns along the way. He also suffers from low self-esteem and feels like he’s a failure in his father’s eyes and works hard to prove himself; and to show Aubrey he can be what she needs in a partner and father.

Aubrey is a black cat. I did not like her in the previous book. However, I did liked the fact that we get to see a lot of how she thinks and feels (regarding her ex-husband, his girlfriend and Michael). She is relatable and she’s a strong woman, who’s trying to keep her life together after her marriage failed and then is faced with an unexpected pregnancy.

I very much liked how the found family theme played out and the unexpected bonds that were formed.
Side characters that deserve a special mention: Aubrey’s boss - he was the jerkiest jerk!! I felt bad for her but I loved how the lady from HR had her back and handle him, when Aubrey went on early maternity leave. And Noah, he became Michael’s friend and really helped him, with both his insecurities about his job and about what to do with his relationship with Aubrey.

Devon has a sensitive way of writing characters that go through emotional turmoil and that are flawed and scared, but trying to live their lives as best they can, making them relatable.

This was such a sweet read! There was so much to this beautiful story and I loved seeing Audrey and Michael’s relationship blossom. I also loved the acknowledgment that they were somewhat forced into this quick romance through an accidental pregnancy, but that it didn’t take away from the fact they really, truly loved each other. Sometimes things just work out. There’s really no “right” timeline. Audrey’s pregnancy and postpartum experience was also very real and raw. She has a birth experience that doesn’t go at all how she planned, and the author did a great job conveying Audrey’s birth related trauma and struggles postpartum. Michael is younger and until Audrey came along, he wasn’t ready to settle down and grow up. I felt like his character growth was very realistic. He started with a lot of self doubt and being unsure of himself, but he really comes into his own. Sometimes we need life to throw us curveballs so we get our shit together. This book also did an incredible job of showcasing a healthy co-parenting relationship between Audrey and her ex-husband. Audrey even becomes good friends with her ex’s new girlfriend. I was so happy that there was no toxicity between this blended family. The spice was the perfect amount and done very well. Overall, I very much enjoyed this read and would definitely recommend it to those who enjoyed Out On A Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young and Reckless by Elsie Silver.

Thank you to the author for the ARC! Well done!

ARC Review

When I first began to read this book, it did start off pretty slow. I couldn’t figure out where the story was gonna go and it took time to pick up pace. But I did stay up for 2 hours in the night to finish it because I had to knew what would happen at the end. The ending was definitely very emotional and it was crazy to read about.
Pregnancy is not easy and the way Michael stayed by Audrey’s side throughout the whole thing and cried when he was taken away from her was emotionally devastating. Having someone by your side, who picks up all your calls and comes running to you the second you call him to let him know that something is not right is just amazing. Michael in all ways proved to Audrey that he was here to stay and no matter what was thrown at them and what came their way, she would always have him by her side. They taught each other how to love and support each other and find their other half in each other. Love does not come easy and these two proves that once you fight all odds, life may not be perfect, but at the end of the day you know what you two have each other. This accidental pregnancy was so far the best to read about and the way Michael proves time and time again that he’s gonna mature and be the future of the children and he wants her to be. Love can make one change as long as they’re willing to and it’s the most heartfelt precious thing. I can’t get enough of this book and how beautifully all emotions were displayed and put out there.

‘Because Of Them’ is the second instalment in the ‘Because of Love’ series, and much as I enjoyed the first, this one is my favourite!

If you read ‘Because Of Her’ - which while you needn’t have to, I’d recommend - you would know Audrey, Callum’s ex-wife, and their daughter, Maisie, whom they amicably co-parent.

This book follows Audrey, as she navigates an unexpected surprise: a positive pregnancy test that transpires after a good couple of dates with a seemingly great guy, who eventually, ended up ghosting her.

That isn’t to say Michael is not still a great guy - in fact, careful not to give too much away, you’ll see he is actually the epitome of a human golden retriever! He just wasn’t ready to settle down, so he scared himself away when it came time to meet Maisie.

This is a really beautiful book about relationships, pregnancy, and parenthood - and the worries, woes, and wonders each and every one of these chapters can bring to one’s life. I loved so much about it, spicy scenes included, but I especially appreciated the sensitive handling of subjects like infertility.

Thank you to Devon May for the opportunity to read this before its highly anticipated release. I’d recommend it to anyone in the mood for a heartwarming, reassuring romance - and a chance to support an amazing Australian author along the way!

The accidental pregnancy trope is one of the biggest icks for a lot of readers, and I thought I was one of them. That is of course until Devon May sprinkled her magic dust all over this book!

I was so glad when I found out this was about Audrey because I felt like there was so much to learn about her during Because Of Her. She quickly became one of my favourite characters in the BOL series. Her character development was a journey I enjoyed. Is she flawed? Yes. But is she ignorant to those flaws? No. Honourable mention to her friendship with Cassie and how it bloomed throughout, I loved it. It’s an easy thing to pit the ex wife against the new gf, so it was refreshing reading another interpretation of the dynamic.

Devon has a way of taking a character you don’t think you’ll like and making them loveable, case in point Michael. That man could use some serious therapy, however the work he put into improving himself throughout the book was impressive. I loved the development in his relationships with Audrey, Maisie and even Noah.

Devon, thank you for choosing me to read the ARC. You nailed it with this one.

Book 2 in Because of Love series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

* accidental pregnancy
* Reverse age gap
* Golden retriever MMC x grumpy single mum FMC (for good reasons)
* Second chance

I really enjoyed this. I like the way Micheal really tried to be better and to be the man he wanted to be and how it wasn’t an instant everything is perfect and we are so happy kinda romance book. It felt like a more realistic love story which I loved. I also understood Audrey and her hesitations and liked she didn’t dive head first too quickly. I enjoyed the friendship between Audrey and Cassidy (from Because of Her). I just wanted a bit more of their relationship to get really invested and push it to a 5⭐️ read. I highly recommend this series. The books are very bingeable, fun and spicy, with some heavier themes embedded throughout which makes them feel more realistic and relatable than a lot of romance books . It’s also set in Melbourne which is nice to read books set in Australia by an Aussie authors.
It’s out November 1st so go and pre order now 😊

This review is following an ARC of this book for an honest review.

Audrey finds out she is expecting with a man who ditched when he accidentally met her first child so she doesn’t expect him to stick around for this one. Michael regrets his actions but was spooked at the thought of meeting Audrey’s daughter and vows to get her back.

I really enjoyed Audrey’s journey learning to trust and accept that Michael was not only going to be there but going to love her whilst he was.

Michael is the perfect MMC, loyal, golden retriever vibes with abs, can’t really go wrong there.

I like that we also saw Cassidy’s reaction and how she took the news following her journey from book one.

An enjoyable read. Thank you!

This book absolutely blew me away and I am so happy I got to read "Because of them", the second book in Devon Mays "Because of love" series.
I'll admit I went into it slightly hesitant knowing there was a surprise pregnancy in the book but wow was it done so beautifully.
I can say with 100% honesty that this was exactly what my heart needed to read and so far this is my favourite book in the series.
I found myself teary quite frequently just a mixed range of emotions swirling around tears of happiness tears of sadness.

I don't want to give any spoilers here but if your a fan of romance. Of facing a new path in life or re opening a door thought long closed and finding new dreams this book is for you.

I adored this book so much and geniunely found myself in a bit of a slump when I finished it because it was just gorgeous.

Thank you for the opportunity to read the ARC. I cannot wait for the next one.

Because of Them was a beautifully written story about a freshly divorced mum who meets a young, gorgeous man and has a mind blowing fling. Little did she know this fling was going to turn into so much more.
I found the story and characters to be realistic and relatable, the author easily brought out the emotions with her beautiful writing. With a few surprises along the way, it was a wonderful read. 😍

The book is second in a series but can be read as a standalone. I loved the little sneak peak we get for the third book. 🤩

I FLEW through this book. Devon May writes stories so well, i was vibing so hard.

Look, I knew this was accidental pregnancy but I'm super thankful for the content warnings at the start. As someone who has experienced the scariness of an emergency c-section i wasn't sure how i would go reading about it but the feelings that Audrey went through were so freaking valid and yeah good job

ARC Review - where to even start this book was an emotional roller coaster and really pulled at my heart strings. Unexpected pregnancy with complications I definitely recommend reading the triggers before just to be prepared. The character building was done beautifully I didn’t like Michael’s character in the first quarter of the book and by the end I had fallen in love with him. His internal struggles and growth really hit me deep. Audrey really went through an emotional roller coaster but I love the relationship her and Michael build together.
I am very excepted to see what the next book in this series brings.
Thank you Devon for writing such a beautiful story.

Devon did not miss a beat in bringing Audrey and Michael’s story to life! And the accidental pregnancy trope was done so well!
I adored how their story opened up, how we got to see Michael grow into himself and realise what he needed in life! He isn’t your normal book boyfriend - he makes the mistakes but he takes responsibility for it! And I love that! I love how he helped Audrey into herself too! She definitely has her own issues but together they flourish!
And I love how Devon created such a special friendship with Cassie!
I’m normally a spicy girl - but this book was so adorable and I didn’t miss it!
This series is turning out to be so bloody cute!

I was gifted an arc from Devon.

"I do. Believe it or not, Audrey, I want to spend time with you." -Michael

A book that will convert everyone into lovers of the accidental pregnancy trope.

When Audrey finds herself pregnant she knows she needs to tell Michael. But knowing that her daughter was the reason he turned and ran from her, she can't help but worry how he will take the news of her pregnancy.
Michael knows he messed up and is willing to do anything to make it up to Audrey. So when he finds out that she is carrying his baby he knows that this is his chance to prove that he is ready to be a good dad and partner.

I am not normally a fan of surprise/accidental pregnancy books.
However, this might be the acceptance. I really enjoyed reading it.

I loved the relationship between Audrey and Michael, and how it's pretty ruined when the book starts but we get to watch as they slowly rebuild that closeness they had before Michael left.

I like the setting, this cottage is almost too small for the mother and daughter. The moments we got to spend with Audrey, Michael, and Maisie at the cottage were my favourite in the entire book. They felt so sweet and cosy.

The pacing was great, we got to see the entire pregnancy as well as a few weeks after Audrey gives birth, so we got to see the effects of parenthood on both Michael (A new parent) and Audrey (An experienced parent)
I loved that this was a duel POV book, I don't think it would have worked as well as a single pov book, as seeing things from both Michael and Audrey's perspectives was key to understanding how they felt in regards to everything that was happening.

I loved Maisie's character, and how she bonded so well with Michael and accepted him into her crazy family. The way she wasn't bothered about her sibling only being a half-sibling. I thought she was a really sweet character, and I hope we get to see more of her.

I haven't read Because of Her so I didn't know anything about Callum and Cassidy going into this, I do want to read it at some point as they seem like a sweet couple and I'd like to know how they got together. I love how they stood by Audrey when she was panicking, and held her hands. Even with their history, Callum knew that Audrey needed someone in her corner and he made sure he was there for her.

I liked Michael, I thought he was interesting. He did annoy me at the start when he was explaining why he ran from Audrey, but I can see why he panicked. Once he started to own up to things and accept this new role in his life he became such a strong person for Audrey to lean on when things got hard.

I loved Audrey, she was such a deep character, she had plans, and knew what she wanted but when her pregnancy turned those plans upside down, she didn't let that stop her. She powered through and proved just how incredible she is.

I would give this book a spice rating of 3. It is spicy but if you wanted you could skip the spice chapters.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what's next.

I received an ARC from Devon’s team and I appreciate the opportunity. I decided to read Because of Her before diving into this and while it isn’t absolutely necessary they are interconnected so I did appreciate the background you get with that story. With that said I enjoyed this much more than her debut novel.

So while this Accidental Pregnancy story obviously forces proximity it gives Micheal, our Younger MMC his second chance since Audrey, our Older FMC has already written him off for running off once before and he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about her and regretting his choice. The age gap did not bother me at all, it was one of those “fun” tinder hookups that just developed into more even if it was one sided from both ends at times.

Micheal is a builder, holding back taking over the reigns of the business from his Dad. Micheal is seen as your typical body building, construction worker, f*ck boy who keeps f*cking up in all aspects of life. But that really isn’t true and just his fear talking which plenty of people tell him that throughout the story. He is aware of his f*ck ups though and regrets them or when things are going well he doesn’t realize what his choice although with good intentions appears to others.

Audrey is our divorcee, single mom just trying to move on like her ex husband has. She’s good at her job but her boss sucks, she has a passion she is afraid to commit to as a career but also circumstances make that hard for a bit. In comparison to Micheal she appears to have it all together and while on paper she does, she doesn’t feel like but she also already doesn’t expect much from Micheal let alone for him to change the way he does for her.

I enjoyed the going through the pregnancy together and seeing the altering point of views during the spicy scenes they were definitely more intimate and Micheal silenced her negative thoughts. I have not experienced a NICU stay but I did go through the c-section part and I have to say while as a reader it seemed like
It blurred by it was a very real and accurate description of how that feels in that moment. I can’t blame Audrey for shutting down and feeling how she did right after all that but you know it’s the hormones and the trauma of things not going to plan. They slowly work through all that with their newborns and big sister Maisie.

I liked that we see more of Noah and get a friendship between him and Micheal. I am looking forward to Noah’s story I was hoping for that with the set up in Because of Her.

Also how can I forget about Baxter the literal golden retriever to go with our MMC golden retriever, talk about a bonus character that just melts right in and definitely has the characteristics of a therapy dog.

Overall I enjoyed this much more than I expected to with how I felt about the first book in the interconnected series.

This book was kindly sent to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

When the person you least expect is the person you didn't know you needed…

Post-divorce life has been a bit of a struggle for Audrey. While she's happy that her ex-husband has found the love of his life and their daughter Maisie has another person in her life to love her, things are a little stagnate for Audrey. Her one attempt at dating was going swimmingly until the guy got scared off by her daughter, so she turned back to focusing on her career. But now life has really thrown Audrey a curve ball - two pink lines she wasn't planning for. As much as she wants Michael in her, and their baby's life, he's shown he's not in the same place of life that she is - he's got a gym in his bachelor pad apartment and he has no desire to progress in his career, even though his father has told him numerous times that it'll be passed to Michael upon his retirement. He's definitely not ready to raise a child. But Michael surprises her, stepping up to the plate to support her throughout her pregnancy, and working to put his life on track for the family he's always wanted but wasn't expecting so soon.

Apparently I enjoy the accidental/surprise pregnancy trope? And Devon delivered a fabulous one, wrapped up in a single mum bow! I'm usually all about the single dad romances, but I clearly need to get some more single mum romances under my belt because this was a joy to read and filled with so much emotion as we followed Audrey and Michael on their unplanned journey to parenthood.

Devon gave a nice little tease to Audrey's happy ending in the previous book, so it was nice to go back and see the journey she went on, especially considering Audrey was a bit of a cold character through the eyes of Cassidy and Callum. And having gotten a tiny glimpse of Michael in the first book, it was definitely fun to learn about his character. Together, Audrey and Michael had such great chemistry as they navigated the joys and challenges of finding love under unexpected circumstances.

A trigger warning for birth trauma and NICU life. Devon fills these scenes with so much emotion from both perspectives as Audrey and Michael have their birth plan go out the window and how they thought becoming parents was going to go. There are also brief discussions of infertility in terms of Cassidy opening up to Audrey about her inability to have children and her feelings around Audrey being pregnant.

Aside from Audrey and Michael's relationship, it was also such a joy to see the development of Maisie's parenting team as Audrey, Callum and Cassidy learnt to be a parenting trio, along with Michael as his relationship with Audrey developed. Maisie is such a fun character and her life is filled with so much love, and getting to see all these characters work together and interact is really fun.

And speaking of side characters, the teasers for Amira and Noah? I cannot wait for their book! Devon has truly written an unmissable contemporary romance, filled with fabulous characters, heart-wrenching emotions, undeniable chemistry, and an authentic relationship. If these first two books are anything to go by, the conclusion to this trilogy is going to so damn good!

If, like me, you've been reading all the single dad romances, it's time to dip your toe in the single mum pond!

Because Of Them by Devon May

Started: 19th October 2024
Finished: 23rd October 2024

4.5/5 🔨🔨🔨🔨

I really enjoyed this book and accidental pregnancy is fast becoming a favourite trope in contemporary romance for me!

Because Of Them is a dual POV, fling-to-forever romance, that follows Audrey, a single mum who discovers she is pregnant after a post-divorce fling, and Michael, a construction worker and gym fanatic who can't get this older woman out of his head.

Michael was actually just the sweetest ever, and even though he kept making mistakes, he worked so hard to fix them and to prove himself, that he could be worthy of Audrey and the family they were creating.

Meanwhile, Audrey was exceptionally relatable and everything she experienced with her pregnancy and birth struck such a chord with me. Her struggles with body dysmorphia and self esteem issues really resonated with me and I found myself growing uncomfortable (because of the realism with which Devon writes) during her emergency caesarean procedure after my own birth trauma. Each of these delicate issues was handled with care and empathy.
On a funny little side note, I also connected with Audrey because my daughter is called Maisie too 🥰

Favourite parts:
- Michael bringing Audrey snacks that correspond to the baby's growth week (a kiwi fruit, a pear, a banana and a cauliflower bake). It's just too freaking cute!
- the friendship between Audrey and Cassidy (her ex-husband's new partner)
- the way Michael tries so hard all the time, to change and grow and be everything for Audrey and their baby. He is actually the sweetest, caring golden retriever (the foot rubs, the forehead kisses, the dropping everything to run to Audrey when she feels contractions).
- Michael's low-key plans for Audrey's birthday which are perfect for her
- the burgeoning business man support between Michael and Noah (Cassidy's cousin and one of the main characters in Devon's next novel)
- Michael's effort to know and love Maisie (particularly their Christmas present exchange, her special nickname for him and how he cared for her when she was sick)
- Michael's growing confidence in himself as a project manager and the faith his dad has in him
- Michael building Audrey a house! Just for her and their babies and he hopes himself but he wants it to be her choice 🥹

🎨ARC BOOK REVIEW🎨

Rating: 4.5💎
Spice: 3🌶️

Main Themes:
💚Fling to Forever Romance
💚Accidental Pregnancy
💚Older FMC
💚Tradie MMC
💚He Falls First
💚Golden Retriever/Black Cat
💚Found Family

This is the second book in the Because of Love series by Devon May. This book follows Callum’s ex wife, Audrey and her golden retriever love interest Michael.🐶

Michael is a young at heart tradie working for his father’s building business. Audrey is finally getting her real estate career moving again after becoming a mum to Maisie and the divorce with Callum. Her fling with Michael throws her world off its axis after finding out that she is pregnant…with his child. It’s the last thing she needs right now.😓

She doesn’t think he’s ready to be a dad - he’s still young and he ghosted her. 👻 He is finding his place in the world and isn’t sure he will be good enough. But one thing he knows for sure is that is he wants to try and will do everything in his power to prove to her that he is in it for the long term.🤰

I loved Michael as a character. He showed a heap of green flags with some minor human errors along the way. The way Devon wrote him was as if she based him on a friend of hers. Some of the things that he said, I’ve been told in the past and even the way he said them…It’s just really relatable.💓 He falls first which is one of my favourite tropes. The spice was good too.🔥

I was curious about Audrey when reading Because of Her so it was nice be able to get more of her story in this book. It was nice to hear her be so understanding about Cassidy and Callum’s relationship, as well as emphatic about Cassidy’s past. A really healthy Co-parenting situation which just mends my inner child.🤝🏡

The NICU is mentioned and it briefly mentions infertility but doesn’t go into it so if these are triggers for you please read with this is mind.

Thanks again Devon for yet another great read! 😁

✨📚Because of Them - Devon May📚✨

💚💚HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY!!!💚💚

I must admit when I heard this book had the accidental pregnancy trope I was scared, but let me tell you Devon truly pulled it off in the most respectful way, so please don’t let that put you off. I loved it so much! I also really appreciated how infertility was touched on throughout the book and it again was handled with such sensitivity.

Another thing I loved was the blue collar / working class MMC. I feel like that is definitely something we don’t see enough of in romances as it is normally some rich guy. Obviously there is a time and place for that 😜 but I really appreciated the representation of our everyday men and all they have to offer 🥰

I really loved the dynamic between the main characters but also between the side characters. There is a beautiful found family vibe throughout this series and the friendships really blossomed within this book.

What you can expect:
💚 He Falls First
💚 Accidental Pregnancy
💚 Golden Retriever x Black Cat
💚 Fling to Forever

I have loved everything Devon has written so far and I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next 🥰

Thank you so much to @booksbydevonmay for sending me a digital copy to review 🙏🏻 this baby is OUT NOW and you can get signed copies of the paperback! That’s what I’ll be doing to go with my others 🙈😍

So, the story is about Audrey and Micheal from the previous book. I really liked the story at the beginning, the surprise pregnancy trope is one of my favourite, but I really couldn't connect with the two characters in the first stages of the book. I don't know why but Audrey was a little bit too much sometimes, she was the older one of the couple and at times it seemed she was the youngest for how she behaved. I understand that she was let down pretty badly by Micheal because he fuc*** up more than once during the first stages of their relationship and she wanted to be sure of him and of the fact that he was fully committed to her, to the baby and to what she wanted to build with him, but was trying so hard and she kept keeping him at at arm length. I repeat, I understand her and her reservations but sometimes it was a little bit too much.
As for Michael, I despised him at the beginning for how he acted as a child and an immature boy ( I mean, he is younger than Audrey and he was not a parent himself) but he really fuc*** up so many times with her and her daughter but then, he really changed and he was trying so hard to make Audrey believe that he was fully committed to her and the family they were trying to create together, so I cheered for him and he really delivered in the end (I mean he did pretty amazing 😍).
I will not spoiler anything but they will go through a rollercoaster, a lot happens, there will be pretty scary and uncertain moments.
Just one last thing, I would have loved to have more info about the their future, the epilogue was a little bit of a disappointment but it is what it is, it was really short for an epilogue.

Because of Them by Devon May is a heartfelt, introspective story, although it left me wanting just a bit more depth in places. May crafts characters who feel genuine and relatable, each wrestling with their own struggles, relationships, and self-discovery in a moving and realistic way. The story taps into themes of love, healing, and the power of personal transformation. I appreciated how May didn’t shy away from portraying her characters’ flaws, which made them feel like people you might know—or even parts of yourself.

That said, while I connected with the story's emotional depth, sometimes it felt a little repetitive. Certain scenes seemed to go in circles, especially when characters processed similar feelings multiple times. I wished for more variety in exploring these emotions or for a quicker pace in some areas. For a story so grounded in raw, honest relationships, I felt like a few moments could have benefitted from tighter focus, which might have added an extra layer to the emotional journey.

Still, Because of Them is a touching reminder of resilience and forgiveness, especially in how it portrays second chances. The book nudges you to think about your own experiences with family and friendships. I walked away, feeling a bittersweet sense of closure for the characters. While it wasn’t a perfect fit for me, I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a story that digs deep into relationships, even if it’s a bit uneven in places. Three stars—an enjoyable, though slightly drawn-out, read with some great takeaways on love and growth.

I received this as an ARC, all thoughts are my own.

This was my first dip into a Devon May novel, having signed up for an arc when reading the tropes list.
I'm not usually the type to read accidental pregnancy tropes, but having read a couple now I wanted to give this one a go.
Who doesn't love an age gap (reverse, she's 33, he's 26), an MMC who falls first - and hard- and who is also such a golden retriever and simp for her?

The story follows Audrey and Michael, who started as a 'fun' relationship, but Michael freaked when he met her daughter and ghosted her. Skip a few weeks and she finds out she is pregnant, and isn't sure how to tell Michael or how he will react. This story is about their journey into discovering love and how to grow as people and together.

As a fellow Aussie from Geelong (an hour away from Melbourne), I enjoyed reading a book in a setting that was familiar to me and one I could relate to in its cultural aspects.

It took me a bit to get into this story, as I hadn't read the first in the series and didn't know the previous storylines. I felt like I was jumping in midway and didn't get a true sense of their characters.
The repetitiveness of Audrey's worry about him not stepping up and Michael's lack of confidence in becoming an 'adult' really threw me. I felt it was already known and didn't need to be said over and over for us as readers to grasp it.

The overall story was sweet and the HEA was lovely too.

Thank you to the author, Devon May, for an Advanced Reader Copy!

“We are whatever you want to be. I will give you everything, all of me, all of my heart, my soul, and ask for nothing in return. But if you want to give me a little piece of you, I will cherish it for the rest of my life.”

🌱 Reverse age gap
🌱 Reverse grumpy/sunshine
🌱 He falls first & HARD
🌱 Accidental pregnancy
🌱 Interconnected standalone

Now I know what you’re thinking because I was thinking the same thing when Devon announced that Because of Them would have a pregnancy trope.

But believe me when I say this was handled beautifully, and felt so honest, real, raw and emotional, that I think Devon has made me a fan of the pregnancy trope.

Following the events of Because of Her, the story focuses on single mum, Audrey, and gym bro/kind of a fuckboy, Michael. They couldn’t be MORE different but of course, opposites attract and after a few months of spicy fun, Audrey finds herself pregnant.

Honestly, I read this book in less than a day because I was THAT invested in it and the journey both characters went on - Audrey’s self acceptance, self love and rediscovering her happiness, to Michael’s maturity growth and overcoming his imposter syndrome he so clearly felt in his career.

I’m really impressed with Devon as an author and I think her writing just keeps getting better. I cannot wait for Because of Me!

This is a heartwarming continuation of the Melbourne-based series that has captured my heart. As a huge fan, I was thrilled to receive an advanced copy and can confidently say that this book is a must-read for anyone who loves contemporary romance with a touch of Australian flair.

While I recommend reading the first book for a deeper understanding of the characters and their history, it's not strictly necessary. Devon's ability to seamlessly integrate Australian culture into the story adds a layer of authenticity that I appreciate. The characters' love journey felt natural and relatable, even given their unique circumstances.

One of my favorite aspects of this book was the significant growth of Michael as a character. He may not have been love at first sight for me, but his development throughout the story has won me over.

I also want to commend Devon for finding a fresh and innovative way to connect this series. By focusing on a divorced couple and giving each party their own book, May adds new layers of complexity and depth, particularly in the second installment.

Overall, Because of Them is a fantastic addition to this series. The characters, the setting, and the story all come together to create a truly enjoyable reading experience. I'm giving it a 4.5 ⭐️(rounded up for Goodreads) and highly recommend it to fans of contemporary romance.

Because of them by Devon May is a romance book between a hardworking and recently divorced co-parenting mum and a younger gym junkie tradie bloke. Straight off the bat we find out that our FMC - Audrey - is pregnant with her “ex” hookup - Michael’s - baby. From there were plunged into a very real and gripping depiction of an accidental pregnancy and a blossoming romance between a somewhat unlikely couple.
Audrey is a little bit prickly, but I honestly enjoy that when it comes to an FMC. Michael on the other hand was a golden retriever guy. He was so unsure of himself and kept setting himself up to “fail” because he thought everyone else around him expected that of him. I actually loved this dynamic of a woman who is very successful in her career and relatively sure of herself, while at the same time no longer really happy with what she’s always thought she wanted. And this man who has big things waiting for him but not willing to take that next step, being scared that he’ll stuff it up or disappoint those counting on him. Both of these characters unwittingly bring these characteristics or “flaws” into their relationship too, so ensues them helping each other and encouraging one-another to be the best version of themselves.
I am super aware that pregnancy and babies in books is not for everyone. I personally adore this trope and when I saw that Because of Them had it I jumped on this book. Devon did not disappoint with it either. If anything it was more real and raw then I was expecting.
Overall, this was a really solid continuation of this series. If golden-retriever guy, prickly FMC, older woman, and accidental pregnancy sound up your alley I highly recommend picking up this book!

Note/CW: I do want to give people a heads up if you’re thinking of picking up this book that there are some somewhat graphic and detailed scenes of medical emergencies - pertaining to pregnancy and birth. I think if you aren’t comfortable with reading this or it could be traumatic I would either skip these chapters or even skip this book if it could be a detriment to your mental health.
