Thank God that's over. I seriously regret purchasing this audiobook. I'll try to keep the intro spoiler free, but the rest should be considered all spoiler because I'm just going to b!tch about all the things that went wrong with this book - and there's a lot. One of my many complaints is that he cheats (at least by my standards).
Brad Black (35, loves hookers and blow, The American) helped out our guys, Danny Black (The Brit) and James Kelly (The Enigma), in the last book when they busted a human trafficking ring and rescued a few of the girls. Pearl (21, virgin) was one of the girls rescued and she's now living at the mansion with the entire misfit family. Brad had an instant boner for her, but she's so young that he immediately put her on the "do not pass go" list. This has caused a lot of tension and Brad is being really mean to her because he hates the temptation she presents. Well, eventually they give in to that insane attraction and make passionate love all night. We're not talking about a quick, drunken f*ck against the wall. It was the "staring lovingly into each other's eyes, quiet gasps, bodies rocking together languidly, tender kisses, gentle touches, cupping of the cheek" kind of love making. More than once. Then they kind of decide it was a mistake, he gets pissed, and brings one of his regular hook-ups TO THE HOUSE and f*cks her because he wants to make Pearl jealous. Pearl sees the woman come out of Brad's room and even though she's hurt, she never really believed that Brad would treat her any better than the whores he's usually with. In my opinion, he cheated. If he'd been with Pearl because they were drunk and had a one night-er, I might have gotten over it. But not after they made love. Instead of telling her he wanted to be with her, he acted like a child and made her jealous. For me, that was enough to drop it to a 1 or 2. Then something gross happens and I listed that below. Anyway - lots of stupid crap happens, there's another bad guy in the picture, the standard "shoot out on water while riding jet skis" happens, then HEA.
Now to all the other crap I hated. SPOILERS AHEAD.
FLUFF: JEM is really longwinded as hell (just like this review). All of her books are too long. I'd like to point out that there are only 3 "Unlawful Men", yet there are 5 books. That's because JEM adds too much crap that we don't need. You get to hear endless commentary on Rose's breasts leaking, her breast pump, the baby crying, everyone lacking sleep, Daniel getting expelled from school, the renovations on her salon (which ends up getting blown up anyway), the property she wants to buy, etc, etc. It's already a 23hour long book!!! Cut the shit and get on with the story!!!!
GROSS: This mofo Brad had just brought that hooker to the house to fuck her and make Pearl jealous. That same night Pearl and Brad get in an argument about it and then they end up wanting to f*ck again..... except the sheets are dirty from his sex with the other woman!!! So he literally pulls the nasty sheets off and puts a new one on, all while making out with Pearl. I WAS LIKE HOW FREAKING NASTY. WHY WHY WHY!!!
SURPRISE: Brad gets a surprise that causes him to break-up with Pearl. What does he do?? He goes to his hotel and loads it with cocaine and hookers. He says he didn't f*ck anyone, but I don't believe him. The fact that this was even his first reaction was troublesome.
PEARL: She's so freaking annoying and stupid. The entire time she's like, "nobody can know who I really am or they'll hate me." We don't even know who she really is until almost the 70% mark and it's a total freaking BUST. It was such a stupid non-issue. She has an uncle that murdered her parents, beat her, and is planning to sell her virginity. First - they rescued her from human trafficking. Why did she feel like she couldn't tell them the rest of the story?? What's the point of keeping that a secret?? Not like they picked her up at Disneyworld or something. Then - the uncle beat her, but she's a virgin and he never did anything sexual to her. She knows Rose's story. Rose was kidnapped as a child and raped, had a baby who was taken from her at birth and sold. Then forced to prostitute herself until she met Danny. For me - Rose's story was WAY worse than Pearls. Pearl knows this story and she STILL thought she couldn't tell anyone about her life because they'd hate her. She's just dumb as hell. Added to my "FMC that should die" list.
BEAU: She walks into Brad's bedroom, finds him naked, and instead of walking out - she just stands there talking to him. Like WTF?! First - why is she walking into a bedroom without invitation? Why does she not turn around immediately when she sees the man is naked? Why does she stand there talking to the naked man, knowing that the woman he's sleeping with is hiding in the bathroom? So much was wrong with this entire scene. I started hating Beau in the last book so I really didn't expect much from her.
AUDIO: Damn, Shane East loves to shout. His voice is sexy when he's just talking, but damn he yells everything and it's so grating!!!
I'm tired of writing this review. Personally - I loved books 1 & 2. I think you'd be safe to stop there.
When I say that my heart broke reading the final line, I’m not even joking. I slumped with a sad, but very full heart. Once again, Jodi, THE Queen, has finished an epic series which I will never forget.
The writing was sublime. The plot was sublime. The characters were chef’s kiss perfection. I laughed so much at the small things they said or did which Jodi does so well.
This is Brad’s book, but to have ALL the other characters weaved into his story just made this the perfect ending. We got to see everyone in their full glory, and those epilogues where brilliant!
There are darker elements to this book, but if you’ve read this series from the off, you know each one is written so well; there’s humour, sass and girl power to the absolute max!
I loved every moment of this book, and I think Jodi did it fantastic justice. We love our favourite unlawful men, and they’ll never be forgotten.
We're back with all our darlings. Now that one couple has a new baby and the other two are now married and expecting... we can concentrate on Brad and why he tries to resist his age-gappy attraction to Pearl. Is it just the age? Or is it the fact that Pearl was kidnapped and had things done to her that he doesn't want to think about? Or is it her past? There are things she's not telling us... But of course Brand and Pearl are not the only stars in this final book. Danny and James are still looking for that one missing bad guy and now suddenly some other bad guys are trying to pin some murders on the Black family. And Daniel seems to have some problems at school. And that is so not all!
We have a long way to go until all of them can ride off into that happily ever after sunset!
══════════════════
This was the perfect finale for all our darlings! We got lots of excitement. Suspense. Danger. Mystery. Love. Family. Drama. Fun moments. Sexy times. Heartbreaking Times. ... and all the things! I just adored this final book! I might not be the biggest mafia fan - I don't like it when my heroes torture and kill too many people - but it has to be this was. It was perfect the way it was. Even though it took us a long time to get to that happy end for everyone! Amazing series!
I really need a Miami/St. Lucia-based TV show asap!
What a way to wrap up this series. The American is the thoroughly enjoyable conclusion to what has been an amazing series.
As per usual with all the books to this series, The American is no different; straight from the start your suspicions are on high alert. Trust no one, suspect everyone, with a few red herrings thrown in for good measure. This book is told in four POV’s, Danny, Rose, Brad & Pearl. It is predominantly Brads book, but there are plenty of chapters from Danny & Rose. I feel it gave the book balance, you need those chapters from Danny to carry the plot along. He is the “boss” after all. And don’t worry, James & Beau may not have chapters, but they are there throughout the whole book, so you get to catch up with all the gang.
Even though all these Unlawful Men are fierce about their women, the main romance element in this book comes from Brad & Pearl. And boy oh boy… they really don’t like each other to begin with. Brad has always been the jovial character of the bunch, but we get to see a much more moody, arrogant side to him …which is hot, let me tell you. 🔥 I loved Pearl, she may only be twenty-one, but she is very mature than her years, and as to why is revealed throughout the story. She is one tough cookie. She really gives as good as she gets with Brad. You just know Brad & Pearl are ticking time bomb and it’s only a matter of time before they explode…in a good way.💥
The plot running throughout the book is mind bending and exhilarating, and there’s a few surprises along the way, too. I have no idea how JEM thinks up these plots? It really does feel like a movie when reading The American, you can totally visualise the scenes vividly through the well written details and descriptions. It’s thrilling and has you on the edge of your seat at times. There is also some fantastic humour and laugh out loud moments, the banter is hilarious between these murderous men. They will also have you swooning. And those epilogue’s… 🥺 So good!! I’m going to miss these guys 🇬🇧🇺🇸
Fans of this series will be very happy with how it’s all wrapped up. Another 5 star read in the bag for JEM. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
'Poor Brad never stood a chance! His story was screaming to be told, and we've finally got him in our grasps. He's got Pearl, but he's got us too.' - The British Bibliophile
Thank you to Valentine PR for sending me an ebook Advanced Readers Copy for me to read and leave an honest review, as part of the promo for the release of this book.
The American (Unlawful Men, #5) is the last book in the highly successful and coveted series by the one and only Jodi Ellen Malpas. A series that has quite literally given us it all and even then, there's still one thing--one someone--that we all wanted to see more of and get to know better. Poor Brad Black. An anomaly in a bloody, explosive, underhanded world of unlawful men and their women, Brad was in high demand. We asked--a lot--and Jodi has answered our prayers with the most unhinged, unreal, unlawful book of the series.
Strap yourselves down, The American is in town.
The series was first introduced to us with The Brit , aka Danny Black. A gritty read with a gritty man, filled with the darkest of the darkness a man can possess, bordering on psychopathic to such an unhinged level, it really set the bar to such heights I had never imagined or seen before as a reader. Each subsequent book that would follow had such lofty shoes to fill, yet that's exactly what they did and then some.
The Enigma introduced us to the second of our three unlawful men, James Kelly. A man with a twisted, cold facade, whose identity is as much of a mystery as the man he is himself to the world he is immersed in. Team these two together? We have something brand new and all of its own. Cue The Resurrection . Danny and James had been joined by their women, Rose and Beau, who matched them in equal measure while also completing their mining parts. Little did the four of them know, things would only be getting worse from here. The Brit comes out of hiding and he has The Enigma at his side, and the two of them will do whatever it takes to win the war, keep their women safe and survive. That is, if both can make it out alive. The Rising was set to be the climax of all climaxes. Everything that Danny, James, Rose, Beau and their trusted associates had been working so hard for was to either be all for something or nothing. This was the crux, the turning point or the moment the unlawful men met their end. Anything could happen, but the odds were in their favour when they all rose together to trap, unmask and slay The Bear.
This should have been their happily ever after. Right? We forget, those aren't so easy for men like Danny, James and Brad, and sleeping dogs do not lie for long. The world they've ran for so long refuses to let go of them so easily, and their past is quite literally coming back to haunt them.
A twosome was about to become a threesome, perhaps the deadliest, most lethal and otherworldly the likes of which never has been seen before and this time, their wives--and Pearl--refuse to be on the sidelines. We're going one last round, one last time, with the whole gang. Starting with the man we’ve all been waiting for, Brad Black.
We left things quite literally with a bombshell of an ending in The Rising , James had just discovered something when all hell breaks loose--regarding Rose--, and he had just been pronounced as man and wife with Beau. Things were good. Cut to a month later, and we're back in Miami with the Black boys, their wives, the Kellys and a few extra additions to the unconventional family they have all become. Despite their unconventional nature, they work. Most of the time. Brad is a part of this disfuncitonal-yet-functional unit, and we've seen him here and there in the background as perhaps one of the best scene-stealing side characters that has ever been created. When the focus has been elsewhere and/or on someone else, he's been there and we've been curious about him. The pieces have been slowly laid out, and it's now time to put them all together and figure out just who is Brad Black, The American.
The American fits seamlessly well into the Unlawful Men series, giving us both the same and different vibes within its rights as a standalone read within it. The darkness is still there, the unpredictable nature of the storyline is still there, the raw and gritty nature of the mafia world is still there. You name something about the series as a whole so far, The American still brings those things to the table that we are so familiar with, while also giving us something a bit different. With all the bad men beat--for the most part--, no enemies left to fight and challenges to rise up against, the past coming back to haunt them brings the opportunity for more focus on the character of Brad and Pearl, rather than external factors. They are there, of course, but the shift from external to internal was something new but well received with me as a reader. We wanted to get to know Brad and see his relationship develop with Pearl, and that's exactly what we got and not told in abstract. We saw this very much up close, personal, bloody and with plenty of bullets. Anything less from one of the Black/Kelly men wouldn't be their style.
Another thing that was bigger--and very much appreciated--was the cranking up of those steamy and spicy moments. With Brad and Pearl in the mix along with our other two resident couples, we're getting it from all angles--as are they--, in every way--again, as are they--, at multiple opportunities. Far from a complaint, I can assure you. As a reader, I've always loved the angle of forbidden romance, for one reason or another, so with that being the case for Brad and Pearl and the will they/won't they start, the down and dirty parts were much more of a reward than if things were all hell for leather right from the outset. In this case, the journey was just as important and enjoyable as the destination. As if one of our Black boys would leave their readers enjoying anything less than the full experience.
I cannot think of the last time that a set of characters in a series such as this, rose to such a spot where they not only became fast, firm favourites, but forever ones as well. I have echoed this in every review so far for a book in this series, and I know my fellow readers/JEM lovers will echo the same. All three unlawful men and their women have standout personalities that elevate them from the page and before our eyes. Jodi has crafted them to such a masterful level that they don't feel like characters within a book. They feel like strangers, friends and family we've grown to know, love and adore since first meeting them what feels like a lifetime ago. Brad's addition with his part in this book reinforces this belief as I think we all know someone who is Brad-esuque somewhere in our lives, past or present. We got to know the man we thought we already knew, unpacked his layers, showed his real self and embraced all the flaws, scars, raw and unhealed wounds and I for one think that the time spent slaving away over giving us his tortured soul paid off from the very first chapter. People by now know who my favourite Unlawful Man was, but that might of changed with this book but not as you may think. He stands alongside my former favourite, swiftly backed up by the other third of the thrillingly threatening throuple. Sue me, I can't not like them all.
This is a read that is very much bittersweet. The end had to come at some point and we had to prepare to say goodbye, but now that it is here and it has happened, was it worth coming all this way to say a fond farewell to the men--and their women--who more than deserve a happily ever after? There's only one answer to that, and it's one you've heard screamed from slender lips several times when in the throes of passion with one of said men.
For the time that it has taken us to get from The Brit to The American there hasn't been single instalment that we all haven't looked forward to for one reason or another. This is the type of series that we would have happily ten or an infinite amount of books of, because you can never, ever have enough. That said, everything has its day and for fear of their numbers finally being up and luck finally running out, the Unlawful Men are bowing out after five, explosive books that will firmly remain in the top three JEM series' of all time and one that all readers of hers--and those of dark/mafia romance--have to make a staple go-to read and series for life.
Immediately after finishing the last words of both The American and of the series, I immediately took to social media to praise the goddess of a woman who wrote it all. I was fully prepared for this to be the end. I was fully prepared for the classic JEM whiplash of last-minute twists, turns and surprises. I was prepared to say goodbye to the Unlawful Men. What I wasn't prepared for, was such a happy-cry ending (worded in such a way that only Jodi Ellen Malpas can do it), that wrapped things up so neatly, so perfectly, so smoothly that it would have me getting emotional for three incredible fictional characters. They deserved an ending worthy of the men that they are, and that is what they got. This ending honoured them, did them justice and couldn't have been written any better. Truly the biggest chef's kiss send-off ever written for a book series.
I'm the proudest I've ever been as a reader to not only give this five stars, but officially make it my first top read of the year.
Jodi, you're going to be reading a lot of reviews and gushing compliments with it but please believe me when I say this, we can't even begin to scratch the surface to tell you how we feel--as there is not enough words or ways to describe it--after being gifted books, a series and characters like these. Long after we've all moved on from this series onto what we are lucky to read next, we will treasure and love what we have been blessed to read here. This is a god-level tier book/series from a God-tier level author. Blood, sweat and literally tears have gone into this, which hasn't gone unnoticed, and we'll take good care of loving your book baby--and Brad--now that this chapter has come to a close. They all will be loved for a long time to come.
Unlawful Men...stand down. Your job is done. Enjoy that Happily Ever After.
I don’t know where to start! This is the last of our Unlawful Men Series. Jodi did not fail, telling Brad and Pearl’s story. What I am most amazed with was The American, had 6 different talking and thinking, characters. Amazed me how Jodi kept the flow from one character in one chapter and then switch to the new character in the next. Our loved Brit and Enigma and of course their wives, were prominent, too.
As always, Jodi has BIG secrets that come out. Each time I read one my jaw dropped & I reread that part! Lots of action and I found myself fidgeting or looking sideways and listening to sounds.
Family plays a very big roll and, hate to keep repeating myself, but Jodi has created such a tight knit group that they are family.
I will definitely be reading the whole series, again and again.
What an amazing explosive end to a series with The Brit, The Enigma and The American!. Just when I think I can’t love Jodi’s writing style any more, she writes this masterpiece. Rose, Beau and Pearl all deserve the Badass woman of the world awards!
Brad said it best “We’ve always had one foot in heaven, one in hell. That will never change. But we’re no longer unlawful, just pussy-whipped instead. And that’s way more frightening. Unlawful men. Over and out.
I have no fucking words. Absolutely chaotic and crazy but so perfect. This farewell was everything. Tears both good and bad. Laughs, gasps, eye rolls and literal cackling. Their friendships are so brutally bloody and beautiful. I'll admit I wanted to throat punch Brad....but boy done good!
*please note that this cannot be read as a standalone and the previous books in the series must be read first
What an end to a phenomenal series! 5 books, 3 couples, and a unputdownable plot have made this mafia series unforgettable.
Although this was Brad Black ("the American") and Pearl's love story, we get perspectives from all the beloved couples. Danny, Rose, Beau, and James all are a big part of this book and I enjoyed getting to read more of them. I loved the push and pull between Brad and Pearl and how absolutely obsessed he is with her! And of course, the spice is always top tier.
It was bittersweet to say goodbye to this series but I couldn't think of a better ending and I cannot recommend the Unlawful Men series more!
"It's like a bomb going off in your chest. But it's quiet. Like a shift in something you didn't know was inside you. Dark becomes light." "Purpose," Danny adds quietly. "...Purpose and an uncontrollable instinct to kill anything that threatens their happiness and safety."
Our Unlawful Men are back and this time we get our American, Brad Black. Prepare yourselves for an intense feast of drama, action, suspense, murder, intrigue, passion and family!
The American is the final book in the Unlawful Men series by Jodi Ellen Malpas and it is a BEAST of a book. It's THICCCCC! But with 4 POVs in this epic conclusion, we get not only Brad's story, but we get answers to questions that were left unanswered in the previous books and all the delicious twists and secrets are unveiled from Danny and Rose, James and Beau and now Brad and Pearl.
Book 5 picks up right where the previous book left off (books MUST be read in order) and Brad is confused as all get out. They've rescued some women from captivity and he has some sort of feelings toward the red head. All he sees is red. Red all the time. Red to the point of distraction. And that red is off limits. Pearl meanwhile cannot help but but be intrigued by the man that saved her, even when he is a complete a$$ and tries to fight their attraction with everything he has. She's young, but she's seen and endured a lot in her short life. And when these two get together, they combust. Whether they are fighting one another or running from danger, you can feel their chemistry burn.
With danger still out on the loose, these unlawful men are out to protect what's theirs and they need to take EVERYONE out in order for their loves, their family to feel safe again. Prepare yourself for more killings and secrets to be unleashed.
I've loved the way that JEM has created a family of these strong and dangerous men. Their world is filled with a lot of darkness and danger, but they always have each other's backs. Each of these mafia men is torn up by women that give them a run for their money but they end up being the perfect match. They fight. They love. They banter. They stick together.
I've enjoyed every minute of this found mafia family that may be crazy AF, but never go down without a fight. Brad was an interesting one because he fought his attraction to Pearl for so long, it was almost comical. I loved the way that Pearl pushed his buttons, but also matched up to him. Even when she gave him a piece of herself she never gave to anyone else, she did it with a sense of power. But within their story of finding love with each other, there was still an abundance of drama, suspense, a little dark humor and so much danger.
I did have a couple initial issues upon starting the book. I saw how long the book was and was honestly put off by it's length. Was it a little long? Perhaps, but we also got more than just Brad's story to finding love. Second issue was short lived. I initially wished we just got Brad and Pearl's POVs. BUT....There was more to the story than just Brad and Pearl and that became evident as the story progressed. We also got Danny and Rose's POVs that helped pushed the major plot ahead while working with Brad and Pearl's story that was running along side it and eventually intersected. These issues pretty much disappeared as the whole story was brought together.
I'm sad to see this world go, but Jodi Ellen Malpas went out with a bang. The last shoot outs to the hospital scene was INSANITY! Had my heart pounding throughout. It's a bittersweet ending to this series, but the way everything was wrapped up was done well. I loved that Ms Malpas gave us 3 epilogues with each couples' HEA. May Danny and Rose, James and Beau and Brad and Pearl live Happily Ever After on St Lucia with their growing families!
It took me forever to finish the audiobook. Even the great cast of narrators didn’t do it for me. The book is too long and too messy.
I was disappointed how little space Pearl and Brad actually took up in this book. They suppose to be the main couple. There are more chapters from Danny’s and Roses PoV, than from Pearl’s. 2 other characters were being dragged along from previous books. With no purpose. They talked in circles about same stupid drama.
Rose’s chapters were all about her either leaking, pumping milk, breastfeeding or complaining about her salon not being finished. What was the purpose of having her point of view in this book? I didn’t get it. And this many chapters at that.
Then you have Danny. So annoying! He’s constantly shouting and screaming. He has no ability to control his emotions or has any impulse control. He’s like an untrained dog, barking at everyone passing by for no reason. He was much calmer in The Brit, I actually liked his character. I was done with him when he started a brawl at the principal’s office. I was hoping for Rose to aim it better and end this nonsense that is Danny.
Just when I though the story was getting interesting, new chapter starts where either Rose boobs are leaking or Danny shouting “Rose!” or “Fuck!”
The book is too long, with too many PoV, having issues about nothing and everything at the same time. Author should know when to let her characters go and make space for new ones. The characters that I liked, in their original books, became annoying and uninteresting by the en of this book. So much talking about nothing. The audiobook could’ve been cut in half, if author would’ve stuck to the point.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
We're here again, the final instalment from our Unlawful family and let me tell you, I wasn't ready. I'm never ready for Jodi's stories to wrap up and that's because she's extremely good at what she does, but this one hurt. This one was exceptional.
We're thrown straight into the action, which doesn't let up until the very end. Such a clever mind from the author to have the ability to keep the twist and turns flowing and coming from all directions. Just when you think they can't possibly get themselves out of a situation, the panic setting in and then BAM, another curveball is thrown.
Danny & Rose; The snappy, irrational, trigger-happy pair who fight hard but love harder. I adore these two, my favourite couple in this series.
James & Beau; The silent but deadly pair. They don't say much, but they get shit done, that's for sure.
Brad & Pearl; Brad is an awful lot like Danny, just *slightly* less reactive. Unless it involves Pearl. I loved their story and how it evolved throughout this book.
Without giving too much away, this was a fantastic ending to the gangs story, non stop drama, non stop action but I also loved that we got to see the family grow and evolve.
These men are nothing without their wives ;) such a bittersweet ending.
Brad Black (The American) loyal cousin to Danny Black (The Brit) Along with James (The Enigma) are back. The fourth & final book in the unlawful men series.
The fiery over the top protective assassins are so close, like true brothers ~ there’s fantastic humour and laugh out loud moments, the banter & teasing between them is hilarious between these murderous men. They fight hard but when they love they do so fiercely & unconditionally .
This is Brad & Pearls book, told in multiple point of view, giving us as readers chance to catch up with all the gang.
From the moment Brad rescued Pearl he’s been obsessed with her, she triggers feelings in him, feelings he’s never had before, she’s young but so mature after the hand life has dealt her. She’s no damsel in distress & Brad is most certainly no knight in shining armour. Brad has unleashed the fire in her, fire that was snuffed out of her many years ago !
Both try to ignore the other but they have this insane connection, both struggle to fight the chemistry between them & resist loathe the fact neither one can stay away from each other.
Brad & Pearl are the definition of passion they were so hot and so meant to be. The angst, the back & forth & tension was like forplay 🔥🔥
I absolutely love Jodi Ellen Malpas, she’s that 1 click author for me, the one who immerses me in her words. I'd read any book by her knowing I'd be fully emotionally invested. The American & the whole series is no exception.
It's sweet at the same time that it's sadistic. It's heartfelt at the same time that it's ruthless. I honestly felt like I was reading a movie script throughout. Completely unpredictable & addictive from start to finish.
I have loved this series of immoral, unlawful men so much. It’s very bittersweet to say goodbye to The Brit, Enigma & The American, I’ll miss them but what an unpredictable ride it’s been ~ Thank you Jodi, I honestly don’t know how you dream up these alpha’s that we can’t help but fall head over heels for!
I know this is a series I will re-read over & over again. I have never craved the release of a book, like I did this one! To say I devoured this book would be an understatement ~ What an amazing way to end a series! This has everything I want, sex, secrets and rounded off with good characters and story! ~ infinite stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Oh these unlawful men really are addictive! With The American being the last of the series, Jodi really does end it on an absolute high. She may bring this found family and us readers, peace comfort and happiness at the those final pages but man it is not without enduring a white knuckle adventure…
Get ready for this incredibly amazing, bittersweet finale.
There’s a lot of action, the unexpected twists, more killings, more arguments and fights, more unveilings, more compromises, new wars, new commitments and new passion!
Once again it’s like being home, back with all these characters. Danny and Rose are as fierce and passionate as ever. James and Beau still give those quiet and intense deadly vibes. And Brad ? He’s in a brooding state, his mood is being recognised, he’s silently suffering, and seems he’s constantly butting heads with Pearl. She maybe 21 but she holds her own and gives him as good as she gets. They may dislike each other but there’s no denying the chemistry. All that Combined with trying to do the right thing staying away from her he’s walking a thin line. And when these two combust, their passion truly erupts. And with the best traits of a true JEM alpha, Brad falls hard, he loves deeply and he’ll protect fiercely. Old enemies still out for revenge and new enemies surfaced these murderous men once again are ready for a fight.
As much as it’s a dark dangerous and deadly world, it’s filled with so much love and warmth and this found family have an unbreakable bond. The banter and wit between them brings you the humour to have you laugh at the most intense moments.
The American will have you gripped from the beginning, there’s no letting go, not even a slip, you’ll want to devour this story, and as usual your held on edge of your seat as JEM delivers all the action right upto the very end!
And those epilogues may be the best you’ll read as it ends in the most comforting, satisfying happiest of ways.
But as i’m left feeling sentimental and we say goodbye to these unlawful men, powerful strong women and families, Let’s be ever grateful to Jodi Ellen Malpas for bringing us these incredible alphas and once again another truly memorable epic series!
I am DEVASTATED this series is over. What a perfect ending, exactly what I needed. I’m going to miss my unlawful men and their ladies!
“I start thinking stupid thoughts. How I wouldn’t want to die with anyone else. How it’s been a pleasure knowing these two madmen. See you in hell, I think, closing my eyes.”
“We’ve always had one foot in heaven, one in hell. That will never change. But we’re no longer unlawful, just pussy-whipped instead. And that’s way more frightening. Unlawful men. Over and out.”
The American by Jodi Ellen Malpas is book 5 in the Unlawful Men Series. This is the story of Brad and Pearl. But, this is a interconnecting series that has previous characters entwined in this book. So it does add to your enjoyment if you have read the previous books I felt. This book was just awesome which if you have read Ms. Malpas writing before then you know you are in for a good read. Loved how protective Brad was of Pearl especially after all she has been through and still going through. Loved this book and series! I highly recommend Ms. Malpas writing!!!
Brad Black steps into the spotlight, and honestly… I was ready for closure. 😮💨 Protective instincts, forbidden attraction, and tying up loose ends……..a somewhat satisfying finale. Not my favorite in the series, but I liked how everything wrapped up neatly. A solid ending — and I was kinda glad to say goodbye. 🖤
Just trying to figure out what to do with my life because it’s OVER! My Unlawful Men are gone! 😭😭😭
This series surpasses the star rating!
Where to begin?
To have a full Brad book after all his one liners… Jodi knows how to treat us. The sick romantic in me loved seeing Brad all messed up! 🙊 Then we finally got to him understanding things from James & Danny’s POV and it was everything! 👌🏼
I also need to tell you that I am in love with Brad, like on a new level. He’s not too fictional, he’s gritty and real, he wasn’t a mystical sex god or a super swoony cinnamon roll yet we got all the good lovin’ vibes and swoon that we needed! 😍 I just love him differently to my other book boyfriends. I love Jodi’s MMC’s and Brad is an amazing addition to her ‘collection’? 😉
‘Over and out’ 😭 the epilogue scenario was everything I needed. May have shed a couple of real arse/ass tears over it being over!
This was MY balm! You can’t take it alway! Jodi knows just how to fix you and break you My light is gone and I’ve been left in the darkness! Until the next time! Holding my breath for my next JEM Alpha! … In fact only until May when we get more Jesse 😏
At a loss for words, the end of this series is just everything that was needed. I can't say enough about the entire series. Loving how Pearl so damaged yet mature beyond her years handles Brad Black. Brad is in a really bad place by the time Pearl comes into his life. Brad treats her with disdain until he realizes he needs her more than water. Then he sends mixed signals at best. After what Pearl has been through she handles it quite well. Back in this world with Danny and James and Brad is some kind of wonderful. But the wives here steal the show for me. Rose always the ultimate badass really earns her stripes! Beau and Pearl as well kick ass and take names. Girl power galore. So much love for this found family and this series! Can't wait to start at the beginning again!
We are now on book 5 and boy, it’s a whopper! Danny, James and Brad can’t make a quiet exit from us; they have to leave us with guns blazing in this epic conclusion. Jodi has gone full force in giving us the ending they all deserve.
You will need to read this series in order, as it’s a continuation series, basically like a TV drama. Although this book features The American aka Brad Black, it is an ‘assemble cast’, just like the Marvel films. So Danny, Rose, James and Beau and all the supporting characters we love, are all very much in this final book. Again, we get 4 different POV’s, but for the first time, we finally get into Brad’s head.
“I can’t stop thinking about you,” I whisper, my mouth at her ear, my grip of her hair getting harder. “I just can’t stop.”
Oh Brad 🥹
I wasn’t too sure about Pearl from the time we met her in the previous book, The Rising, as we didn’t really know much about her - but I always have faith in Jodi and I have to say, I fell in love with Pearl from her first chapter. Despite her very horrible beginnings, which we do indeed find out about, she’s a strong and feisty character.
“I have an arse, Mr. Black.” I smile sweetly and walk past him. “And you can kiss it.”
The American ties up a lot of loose ends with old enemies and new. We get a lot of build up in this book. With many theories going around inside my head, you really do end up playing detective. Although having many gripping scenes and some real open mouth ‘Omg moments’ it wouldn’t be a Jodi book without some real laugh out loud comical moments and they were hilarious! Of course there is still plenty of spice and some real sizzling angst between Pearl and Brad that literally had me salivating, first class!
With her Unlawful Men series, Jodi is fast becoming the Queen of plot twists, unexpected turns and massive bombshells. You get them all and more in The American. Bravo Jodi!
This is my favorite series and I was excited to read The American. I’m halfway through and can barely keep up with the many, multiple POVs and criminal network details in what is meant to be a romance between Pearl and Brad. It leaves little room for their character development with so many subplots and voices. I’d love a return to the original format by this author.
"It's like a bomb going off in your chest. But it's quiet. Like a shift in something you didn't know was inside you. Dark becomes light."
"Purpose," Danny adds quietly.
"...Purpose and an uncontrollable instinct to kill anything that threatens their happiness and safety."
The boys are back. The Unlawful Men. And this time it's to get Brad's story. Cousin to The Brit, he's well versed in the life. Likes to entertain, never settling down. Now that James & Danny are settled down- one with a new baby, the other with one on the way... he's feeling out of sorts. Especially about the woman he saved. She's all he can think about. But she's too young for him. And she's harbouring secrets.
I liked this story. Forced proximity, plenty of angry banter, and sparks that ignite well! It get's spicy. But I enjoyed how tender and intimate Brad was with Pearl when it came down to it. There was plenty of action to keep you turning the pages. And even some humour too. It was fun to get more of the guy's bromance-even if I felt they all fought too much. The whole found family feel of it all is great. There were a lot of moments I found myself saying 'huh?' though too...just things I didn't feel like fit the story. I feel like it could have been cleaned up a bit, shortened some. It felt too long. Overall though, I enjoyed it. And I enjoyed how the author wrapped things up. A great series! Be sure to read them in order.
This is the 5th and final installment of the Unlawful Men Series by @jodi_ellen_malpas and boy IT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!!
The American follows Brad Black the cousin of The Brit Danny Black and his obsession with the red head that is his obsession Pearl♥️. But of course I can’t forget to include The Enigma and the ladies these men would move hell on earth for Rose and Beau!
In my opinion, you have the read the other books in this series in order to understand the plot and twist throughout this whole series. And let me tell you….just when you think it’s all figured out..BAM a huge twist happens that leaves like guessing and hooked! This series is the first I’ve ever read from this author but her ability to write something so beautifully automatically put her in my top 10 favorite authors!
This final installment takes you on a ride of your life! The emotions, the storylines, the action, definitely sad to watch it all come to an end, but @jodi_ellen_malpas knocked it out of the park! The ending of this book torn at my heart strings and it ended on a beautiful note🥹. I LOVE this entire series, but Danny Black will always have a piece of my heart♥️.
Side Note: I would absolutely LOVE a possible second generation book! I still can’t picture The Brit, The Enigma, and The American as being girl dads😂.
this is the final book in one of my favorite dark series of all time and unfortunately, it was a bit of a disappointment. to be honest, i don't think this series needed to continue past the third book. the first three books of this series are PERFECT. such an underrated dark mafia/romance series as well.
the last two books read like jodi was definitely trying to stretch what she could and milk these characters for what they were worth. but this last book especially was such a mess. the main couple felt like side characters in what should have been their own book and while i loved being able to see the couples from the first book whose story started it all, they started to lose their appeal because of how boring they are now lol. and, idk...i think the story should have stopped two books ago. this was also unnecessarily LONG. omg it took me forever to get through an audiobook, which hardly ever happens. even though i don't love this ending, i still love this series so much, and these characters have such a special place in my heart. i'm sad it's over but glad we can give these characters a rest!!!
Did I stay up all night yo finish this? Yes, I damn well well did.
We've seen Brad feature throughout the whole of the Unlawful Men Series, but now it's his turn.
This book packed so much. And we got to see the gang all again. The girls pushing the men's boundaries and testing their limits, and the men thinking they can control them.
We saw the chemistry between him and Pearl in The Resurrection, and boy, did it pour out even more in this one.
Of course, life in the mansion isn't going to be plain sailing, and someone is out there upsetting the peace and quiet.
The action is top tier, and spice is spicing so hot. You might need a fire extinguisher.
Brad learns something life changing, and when all of that is threatened, we know the Men are not going to take it sitting down.
This book was the perfect ending to an incredible series. It's bittersweet knowing that the final chapter of them all.
Gosh, this was such a great end to the series. I'm not really a big fan of the This Man series as it's a bit too slow for me, but damn, Jodi didn't disappoint with the Unlawful Men. There's so much action your head spins. But in a good way of course.
This was an awesome and chaotic wrap up of all of the couples and characters we get to know throughout the series (not just the 3 main couples), everyone lives happily ever after and I couldn't be happier for them.
I quite enjoyed the different POVs as not only do we get Brad and Pearl, but we also get Rose and Danny and let's just say, it was a great reminder of how slightly toxic and explosive Rose and Danny's relationship is. And gosh, Danny's slight ADHD and his chaotic brain is just hilarious to read.
With these books, you'll get lots of suspense, sexy steamy scenes, couple and friend fights, lotsa punching and shooting and exploding and trust me when I say, you will not be bored.
I only had one small issue with the book (hence for the 0.5 star down from 5) and that was the constant explaining and re-explaining of what was going on. The characters kept constantly summarising the plot in a way and it just got a bit too much at times as it was repeating a lot. I get that a lot was going on at the same time, but it would have been nice if Jodi trusted her readers a bit to use their brains and keep up without having to go over stuff every 3 chapters :-D
I'm in love with all 3 characters lol x Danny Black, James Kelly and Brad Black..its not all about the sex and violence, I so enjoy reading about how they became who they are. Yes they are extremely violent men but oh boy do they love, worship and cherish their women...really enjoyed the whole 5 books, gutted it's over ..well done Jodi
2.5 ⭐️ this should’ve been about 300 pages shorter and this series should’ve ended 2 books ago 😵💫 I was excited to read about a new couple though, but felt like their romance took a backseat to all the other drama.
