Perfectly Broken

Rate this book
Even after years of trauma therapy, Peyton still believes she’s broken. She has little desire to date or show off her natural beauty, content simply to hang out with her best friends and run her pie shop in New Orleans. But her world turns upside-down when a handsome architect and self-confessed player shows up in her shop and thinks she’s perfect, much more than the usual hook-up. While Peyton does her best to resist his charms, believing she could never be enough for him, she can’t deny the obvious heat between them. With Reed determined to have her, Peyton must decide whether to continue to hide behind her apron and baggy clothes or take a chance and share her scars with Reed, a man with a playboy reputation and scars of his own -- a dark past he can’t possibly share with Peyton, not after learning the horrors she’s endured. But if they can find a way to trust each other, and themselves, they just might be able to heal, to save each other, to live perfectly broken together.

***I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley.com, in exchange for honest feedback.***

This was an emotional, heartfelt love story. Both the hero and heroine had been damaged by their pasts, but refused to let their pasts define them. This unlikely pair proved that opposites do attract.

Peyton has steered clear of any romantic relationships ever since her senior year of college. She goes out of her way to make herself less sexually appealing to men, wearing baggy clothing and brushing off compliments. She can't handle the terrible memories that physical contact by a male triggers.

After years of counseling, she has finally achieved a modicum of normalcy in her daily life. She's finally able to function, with only the rare flashbacks of the night she was raped, disrupting her carefully constructed routines. She's made significant progress, but doubts that she'll ever be able to have a normal relationship. She's accepted that she's broken.

Reed has kept any romantic notions that his female acquaintances might have at bay by making the terms of their encounters crystal clear. He is upfront about the fact that he's only interested in sex and nothing more. He doesn't take them to his house. He rarely does repeats.

Spending a lifetime trying to live down the shame of his father's public infidelities, Reed has little faith in the sanctity of marriage. Even when he tries to make his own way, he is haunted by his father's debauchery. He is judged before he ever gets a chance to prove himself. It seems that everyone expects him to mirror his father's flaws.

When Peyton catches Reed's eye, after meeting through some mutual friends, he rethinks his lifestyle. For the first time, he begins to question whether he's missing out on happiness, trading the intimacy of a long-term relationship for a string of empty sexual encounters. Peyton intrigues him and makes him work for it.

As determined as Reed is to have Peyton, she is equally resolved to wait him out. A self-proclaimed playboy, she's certain that Reed's interest will be fleeting. She's as surprised as he is to find that day after day, Reed continues to pursue her.

Eventually, even Peyton cannot deny his charms. She agrees to date Reed, and their story begins.

For the most part, this story was sweet and heart-warming. There was just enough drama and angst to keep things entertaining. The supporting characters were also engaging and played a major role in this story.

My only complaint is that the story was so long. A lot of time was spent on day to day, trivial details that didn't add much substance to the story. Instead, all of this unnecessary "filler" just seemed to make the story drag on and on. In my opinion, the story would have been much better if it was shortened significantly.

Overall, it was a good book. I liked the characters and the storyline was heart-warming. Although I did skim some toward the middle, I mostly enjoyed this sweet love story. I was glad to see the characters get their HEA and work through their individual issues.

What a lovely introduction to the H…

4-4.5 imperfect stars!!

Take a broken girl and a man with a reputation.

After a traumatic event changed the course of Peyton Mayfield’s life, years later, she still feels broken.

description

description

Day after day, she hides away in baggy clothes while working in her grandmother’s pie shop and seeking regular trauma therapy sessions with a specialist.

When fate brings Reed Langston into the shop, can old hurts be finally mended? Will she take a chance at life and let go of the past and live for her future? Or will her fear render her life forever?

So Reed..

description

Reed has the world by his fingertips: he’s handsome, successful, and has his pick of women.

Only…when a dirty family secret shows its ugly head, can he hold on to the girl of his dreams? Or will it tear them apart?

description

And even more so, when an ex flame and a new suitor compete for both his and Peyton’s affections, how will things all turn out?

Read and you will find out!

My thoughts:

description

Okay, so first things first. After chatting with the author today and her shedding some light on things, it made me look at Peyton in a different perspective. Originally, I had thought Peyton to be a little over dramatic and sensitive to things but after remembering what a friend of mine had told me it finally clicked. I mean, unless you've put yourself in someone else's shoes, it is easy to make judgement and be hard on them.

This proved to be the case for me with Peyton.

Peyton's vulnerability is actually what made her journey so beautiful and meaningful. It is her struggles and triumphs along with Reed that make the story so undeniably beautiful even though she feels tainted (at first).

As for Reed.... well, I really liked him despite his faults. For him, sins of the past really does rear its hold on the present. I'm not saying that Reed was a Saint before meeting Peyton because he wasn't; he was a self- proclaimed man whore and did his share of wrongs.

But after meeting Peyton, then things finally come to light for Reed and he finally has reason or purpose to put old demons to rest.

My only remaining peeve though if anything is just pacing. In the beginning and throughout, I had altering views on whether the story line was going at the right pacing or was dragging. This was quickly diminished though when it hit the last legging of the story and the story just zipped on through and left me feeling a little unsettled. I mean, it was really too rushed and I felt as if some things were just not really resolved. But that’s just me.

description

So, my conclusion:

description

A great read with heart! I definitely recommend this read to those of you who feel damaged and inadequate and feel as if you are stuck in a rut that you can’t come out of!!

It will teach you that despite the sh*tty circumstances you’re given, life goes on and can be wonderful if you give it the chance!

So overall, a delightful read filled with drama, hope, angst, love; and also some quirky characters like Dr. Lorraine, Quinn and her boyfriend Bret, as well as the lovely Marion. <3

3.5 stars!
This book had great dialogue, hilarious at times. I liked the h, she was confident and didn't settle. The supporting cast was also interesting and fun.
The H, he was a fun guy, a bit beta even and he adored the h but it was difficult for me reading about his manho past -countless fuck buddies, threesomes with twins, sometimes with Heather one of his frequent favourites - apparently they fuck each other senseless every Valentine's Day. What bothered me was It just felt sordid.
The H never tells the h about the videos. Also

If I were the h, I would have sat the H down and insisted on some transparency about his past. It was like the h just didn't want to know. I believe in the HEA, that the H loved the h. But I also have the feeling that if they fought or even broke up temporarily, it wouldn't be very long before the H wound up in some OW's bed:(

I'm a little leery of the New Adult category as it often promises lots of angst that grows tiresome. But my experience with this author is so different and I trust her writing skills. She came through again with this story.

The two main characters, Peyton Mayfield and Reed Langston , both are a bit broken but have created lives for themselves that show their resilience and perseverance, thus the perfect title. It's when you examine their seams you begin to see the stress points.

This must be the year for me to fall for the players (I've given a wide berth to these type stories in the past) as Reed kinda falls in this category. Though he's definitely a man-whore, he doesn't string women along. He's got good reason to avoid commitment, which shifts when he meets the reluctant Peyton.

Peyton has a passion for making pies and connecting the different flavors to her customers. She has a talent for it and Reed is intrigued. No one wants these two together (his reputation precedes him everywhere) and Reed has to work hard, transforming in the process. She was obviously traumatized in her past but you've got to dig deep to see the effects.

I liked their individual stories and how their connection helped them take that next step to becoming healthy works in progress because of their relationship. There are also quite a few interesting people surrounding them that give this story life and breath. I'm now a committed fan of Prescott Lane and will read anything she chooses to write and share.

Book – Perfectly Broken
Author – Prescott Lane
Publication Date – March 25, 2014
Type – Stand Alone
Genre – Romance
Rating – 4 out of 5 Stars

Book provided by Author (Blog Tour) in exchange for an honest review.

Check – Check – Check……this is me “checking” off everything that makes a story great….a strong heroine – bang, attention span – bang, tortured main characters – bang, emotional – bang, bang, bang check!!

Now normally I get lost in a story that is told from a 3rd person POV…but it just worked in this story – I don’t know if that has to do with the premise of the story or it was just the author and her amazing talent…but hell…it worked!

This story worked for me – it fell out of the New Adult category with Peyton and Reed being in their thirties…they were successful, they were mature and made mature decisions and shit…need I say it again…the heroine was strong – even after everything she had been through in the past – she managed to continue on and for once….be able to maybe trust again.

Loved this story – especially since it shows us how anyone can survive and thrive in the future – struggling to let the past go and live in the present!

¡Pues no!

Interesting story, but there was something preventing me from fully connecting. I don't always agree with the average ratings, but IMO the average rating of 3.85 is an accurate assessment.

The beginning had a good pace, the middle dragged a bit, but overall it was a decent read.

4.5 pink flower stars for Perfectly Broken. Peyton suffered a traumatic experience just before graduating college and it has forever changed her, taken something form her, and that is the person Reed meets. Reed has his own family issues and issues with commitment. Peyton knows Reed is a playboy but when he shows he won't give up and isn't just a jerk, she gives in.

Reed is....Christ, Reed is so damn awesome! I think I squealed about fifteen times while reading this story because of the things he did or said. At one point be buys out an entire florist shop's pink flower inventory and sends them to Peyton's house. How cute is that? Reed has his own issues but they only serve to make him appear touchable and real. I loved his passion, compassion, tenderness, confidence, and his desire to never give up.

The story is the story of two people who save each other which is the sweetest. I love when it isn't just a guy that saves the girl because that's so old and kind of annoying in that women can save men just as much as men can save women. Their love sneaks up on them and is a sweet thing. They work through all their issues and achieve the ultimate happy ending.

Well done! U left me with a big smile on my face Reed!
Such a great story here. If you are a New Adult fan or a romance with a drama filled plot then grab this book NOW. I loved the main character Peyton. She was raised by her Grandma in New Orleans and took over her Grandma's recipes and started a very successful pie shop. Not cakes, cookies or fudge but pie. She had a sense for who liked what kind of pie and could guess them immediately. I liked that because it was one of the unique traits of the character. So her best friend Quinn and her Brother Griffin helped Peyton through some tough times.

Now for Quinn. there is a lot to like about her but I think most is her fierce loyalty to Peyton. She is a very protective friend. The same lightness is offered up for her and her unique talent. Quinn has a thing for underwear. Many references are made her to her along with her quite charming ways of naming panties. It is just this lightness that balances her and her OCD tendencies. Bret her boyfriend is a dream. His best friend Reed, well ..... my oh my he is fine. He is a player who falls for Peyton.

Now more on the Reed front. I liked him because he did recognize that he was living a life of leisure with a variety of ladies. OK now he gets into Peyton and he is taken by her. Is it enough to change his ways?

This has so many deep parts. The characters are all bonded together very tight. There is a secret reveal for Peyton that is huge and then one small. Reed and Griffin provide the drama. I swear worse than a girl on her period in a chocolate haze coma.
Lastly I saved my favorite character for last. Dr Lorraine. There really are no words to describe how freakin awesome this therapist is. She is smart, funny, and determined to help Peyton. She says the funniest things in a one liner type way. I would love to have a Dr. Lorraine series. There is one part where she tells Peyton to got shopping and well Peyton says no to retail therapy and the Doctor suggests daily masturbation. Peyton went shopping! LMAO just had to give you a taste of her brilliance.

The author does a great job with her style and the correct level of drama. I loved it can you tell?

~~ 4 "Broken" Stars ~~

I really enjoyed this story.  This is the first book by Prescott Lane that I have read, and it won't be the last.  I will say that her writing style took me a little bit to get used too (it's in the third person).  I think what I had to get used to the most was the changing of POV in the middle of a page or chapter.  You really needed to pay attention so that you caught the changes so it didn't get confusing.  Once I got used to that, the book and story flowed very well.  I love a book that can provide dual POV...one thing I loved about this book is it provided multiple POV's.  It was great to read the thoughts of not only Reed and Peyton but all the side characters as well.  You never had to wonder how or what someone was feeling or thinking.  I will say that I thought that the pace was good but there some spots that I thought dragged alittle but didn't take away from me enjoying the story.

This story I thought showed how love and relationships are a marathon and not a sprint....that if you are truly patient things will work themselves out.  Patience is truly a virtue :).

Reed and Peyton are the main characters of the story.  I found that I really liked these two...they were relatable and believable.  Both of these characters are truly broken, like the title states, but for completely different reasons.  They also dealt with the past issues in two completely different ways, but when they finally came together they both realized that they were what each other needed to heal.  In this book we find out through little hints as to what happened to Peyton, although I guessed it right away, she finally tells Reed exactly what happened by about the 50% mark of the book.  It took almost the whole book to find out what happened to Reed and what broke him, I really wish his would've come out sooner, so we would've seen them working together to overcome things more.    I loved the pace the author took for these two.  She definitely didn't rush anything between these two.  She actually made Reed work a little bit to gain the affection and attention of Peyton,  that was great !!! These two also had amazing chemistry.  Even though it took most of the book before sex was brought it in....the author truly knows how to write a steamy scene without sex ;)

We met quite a few secondary characters in this story....some that were completely lovable (Quinn, Bret, Marion, and Dr. Lorraine) and some not so lovable (Richard, Heather and Griffin).  The banter between the main characters and the lovable ones was truly great.  It had me chuckling many times throughout the book.

I would recommend this book if you are looking for that really good love story between two broken souls who truly become better after finding each other.  This is Book Bitch approved :)

She did it! Prescott Lane has made me a fan of the new adult genre and I swore it couldn't happen. Perfectly Broken will tug at your heart, bring tears to your eyes, a sigh to your lips and a sweet, sweet feeling in the pit of your stomach. It's not all rainbows and butterflies, however. There is trauma, pain, and heartache - it wouldn't be New Adult if there wasn't. But, the way the characters deal with the trauma and one another is what made me fall in love with this book.

Peyton suffered terribly at the hands of a stranger in college. It changed her life forever and she believes she can never be whole, again. Even with the help of her therapist (an awesome therapist, by the way) Peyton has her doubts that she'll ever have any kind of "normal" romantic life. Reed makes her want to try and she's not sure how to deal with that. He's known for his womanizing ways and it scares her that the first man that's made her feel anything could end up breaking her very fragile heart.

Reed hates his father and the way he has treated his family. His extracurricular activities have been exposed and caused the family terrible embarrassment. Yet, it hasn't stopped him from treating women like a human buffet that he helps himself to often. Granted there's a difference. Reed doesn't promise forever - he doesn't even allow an overnight stay and he doesn't have a wife at home waiting for him. These women go into it knowing the score. Knowing that Reed doesn't believe in relationships and he's never felt a bit of remorse for this. And then he meets the beautiful, enigmatic Peyton. He's never met a girl that he wants to date. Of course, he wants to get her in bed, but he's willing to wait as long as she needs for this to happen. He just enjoys spending time with her, seeing her, talking to her. For the first time, he regrets and is embarrassed by his past and just prays that it doesn't ruin the one thing he knows he can't live without.

The characters in this story ran the spectrum. You have the crazy best friend that is there for you through it all, the fraternity brother that knows you at your worst and has probably joined in, the wonderful doting family members, the embarrassing, hated family member, and the protagonist that makes you want to scream. I loved Peyton's grandma and Reed's mom. Every girl or boy should have that kind of love and support. Quinn and Brett were so funny and protective. I loved them both and enjoyed reading a bit about their relationship, as well. Griffin made me want to strangle him on a regular basis and this was hard because I really think deep down he had a big heart he just hid it under an asshole exterior.

I seriously recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Ms. Lane please write more stories like this. I loved it so much!

At first it took me awhile to get used to the writing style. The story is written in different POVs, third person usually not my favorite. We do not only get the hero and heroine’s POVs, but some of the sub-characters. The switch in POVs is not separated by chapters. The switch happens midway in the chapter at various times. I think too many POVs takes out the intensity of the story and can confuse the reader. However, the author did a good job. She pulled off doing all the things I usually criticize in books.

I loved the characters. Peyton and Reed were wonderful. I loved the sub-characters. Even the heroine’s BFF, Quinn, did not get on my nerves. Lately I have been having issues with the stereotypical BFF that is slutty and wants her friend, the heroine, to become a slutty too. However, Quinn is not like that at all.
The story had enough drama with the ex-“something” of Reed’s, the story with Quinn’s brother, and the characters’ secrets that I was never bored. I started reading this book at night and I woke up early to finish it. I had to know what everyone was hiding.

Bottom line: I liked this one and glad I chose to read it.

**Perfectly Broken was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

Perfectly Broken flawlessly executes a love story about two kindred spirits who help each other heal and grow. The story deals with very delicate subject matter beautifully. The plot moves at a reasonable pace; it’s not too fast or too slow. By way of third person POV, which is not my favorite POV but I think is a good stylistic choice for this story, the author tells us the love story between a woman who’s dark wounds still fester deep inside her soul and a man who’s been fighting judgment his entire life. What I absolutely love about this book is the author’s development of their relationship. There is a bit of chasing in a fun and flirty way and then the exploration of themselves and who they are together. It’s a seemingly long progression from other books I’ve read but given the fragility of the heroine’s past with the juxtaposition of the hero’s reputation it worked so appropriately. Peyton and Reed are in their mid to late thirties as well and the maturity they show is also age appropriate. They’re successful, smart, reliable, funny, and playful. I would be remiss I didn’t mention the maturity in which the author handles the character of Peyton. I’ve said this one hundred times and I’ll say it one hundred more but strong heroine’s always stand out for me and always make a love story better. Without taking a risk of spoiling any major plot points I’ll just say Peyton’s strength refreshed me. The author gave us this beautiful creature in Peyton who exemplifies hope, perseverance, and ultimately peace. That’s a good word for this story, peace. The characters yearn for peace and fulfillment. And the journey in which they embark on to get there provides a hopeful love story with solid characters. I’ve never experienced what Peyton has or even what Reed has been through but there is something special about this author’s writing and the soulful voice in which she tells her story that makes me really believe in happily ever after’s. Perfectly Broken is honest, real, and full of feeling; excellent love story. And ps - there's an awesome epilogue.

**** 4 Stars ****

This was a beautifully written story. I loved how it took place in New Orleans. A city that was broken and damaged from Katrina, but came back up so that tradition could continue.

Peyton has a traumatic past. She feels alone and broken. Her parents died at a young age, and the only living relative is her loving grandmother at a nursing home. Peyton hides in her baggy clothes and plays everything in her life safe.

"You are not broken. You are not dirty. And I'll spend the rest of my life kissing every inch of you until you believe me."- Reed

Reed has a playboy reputation, but he also has his own issues. One look at Peyton and he realizes he needs her in his life. This playboy is so romantic and is full of touching surprises. ***Sigh*** I absolutely loved Reed's character.

"You can be as rough as you want in bed, but just be gentle with my heart."- Reed

4.5 Reed Loving Stars!

Source: eARC for Honest Review Courtesy by Author

It has been awhile since I read a book that has sat within my heart after I have read it.   Peyton and Reed's story has held a firm spot in my heart for awhile after reading it which is always a good sign for me.  I've been in a bit of a reading funk again lately so, this little emotional gem hit the spot for me.

"Honey, the last piece
of the puzzle for you is finding strength in your sexuality again.
There is a man who'll be worth the fear, the vulnerability.  And he just
might be right around the corner."

Peyton believes she is broken and not fixable after being sexually assaulted.

Reed is a player at heart and doesn't believe in love and settling down.

Peyton is seeing a unconventional therapist Dr. Lorraine (who is a complete hoot and if we all had therapists like that, I believe we would be in a better emotionally sound world).  With the help of Dr. Lorraine, Peyton starts to believe.

The moment Reed walks into her bakery everything changes. For Reed, for the first time he wants more.  For Peyton, her traitorous heart starts to flutter again for the first time in a long time.

Reed has always been a man who gets what and who he wants, well until ... Peyton.  Reed has some self doubt with his feelings because of his douche canoe of a father.  Peyton has a rocky road ahead of her from her past, Reed's past and unrequited feelings from another.

To get Peyton, Reed has to something he has never done before ...be patient.  For Peyton to trust in this potential relationship she puts Reed through so many hoops until he can prove that he is so much more than a player.

As Peyton and Reed make their way through this vulnerable relationship they both start to blossom as a couple and as individuals.  But for Peyton when things get a little to close to her heart she pushes and she pushes hard.  As Reed walks the mine field of Peyton's emotions and angst, he gets burned when he gets to close.

"Studies show that woman fall in love easier than men, but men fall harder."

When Reed screwed up Peyton way over reacted to the tenth degree while at the same time Reed's response to her blow up was so frustrating.  I couldn't believe the time delay for Peyton to get her head out of her ass and for Reed to get a bigger set of balls.

Even though their emotional angst caused me some stress and frustrations I still loved their journey.  Reed's patience and persistence pays off in the end, which is Peyton's heart.

This was a sweet emotional angst filled love story.  My favorite part of this book is Reed even with his lapse of greatness.  (Check out my next book boyfriend monday to find out more about why I love Reed so much). Reed and Peyton had a tough emotional journey but in the end it was so worth it for them and me.

This was my first Prescott Lane and definitely will not be my last.  I am so happy that I got the chance to discover Prescott and this book.

This is a standalone novel and it features the couple Peyton and Reed.

Brief Synopsis
Peyton went through a traumatic event in her life when she was in college, ever since she has been closed off when her therapist suggests she starts dating again. Reed a reformed playboy meets Peyton through mutual friend at her bakery. Sparks fly and the couple has to figure out if it’s really all worth it.

My Thoughts
I had a better picture painted of what this book represented then what was given. The heroine was so confused and even though I understand her reluctance, she really never gives the hero a real chance until near the en d of the novel. She is honestly a little too naive to be believable even after what she went through. Certain things were a little obvious for her to not understand and then she goes and does the most predictable things that it was quite annoying. The hero in my opinion tried his best but the heroine really tried my patience. I’m not saying he was perfect far from it; he just was a little more open and likable whereas even heroine’s friend was irritating till the last few pages.
The story was a little convoluted and predictable that I could really guess what was going to happen next. The hero had no real closure with his father and I had a problem with that, I felt it was too rushed in the epilogue. I was told what happened to the couple instead of experiencing which I have always hated in book. Overall it was not the worst book, just could use better structuring.

Reading this book felt like a ton of deja-vus for me, because while I was reading I felt that so many parts or stuff that happened I read in other novels too. It doesn't mean it's a bad book, but if you read a ton like me then you know it's not good when you have other books in your head while reading one.

Besides that it felt just ok. The first chapters were better and after that little by little the deja-vu wave started to dance in my face. Also Peyton, which at first said she's not going to be with the hot guy that has ton of girls at his feet changes her mind. I mean, yeah, I get it, if she didn't it wouldn'd have been the story, but the change was a bit fast. Plus a delicate topic is discussed in this book and I had the impression that it was treated superficially not just by the guy but by her too. Yeah, it passed time and bla bla, but stil.

I dunno, this book seemed off for me, something was missing. Maybe were the characters that felt copied from other novels in the same genre or how they were so cliche and stereothipically written, or the writing style that made me feel a big nothing. Or the breaking up and shouting and then getting back together again and again.

So, to sum it up, this felt like a copy to me and not something original. Yea, I know, it's hard to be original, everything has been written by million people already but you as a writer have to make it seem new. Through your writing and your vision. And maybe you as a reader if you haven't read too much NA already then pick it up. Maybe it will be better for you than it was for me.

What a amazingly poignant book about pulling yourself together and fighting back to find confidence in yourself after tragedy and violation to you occurs. This is what Peyton has done with the help of her friends. She still is a little shaky and becomes a shell of herself but that is just so she can function and get out of bed. She makes herself stronger through running, more confident through her baking and when Reed enters the picture her world opens up like a rose in bloom.

That is what Peyton is a rose in bloom. You don't know the beauty until it unfolds itself into the flower it is to become. Reed does this for her. Her sees her for who she is broken and all. He has a past too and that is something Peyton helps him with. Together they are able to find the courage and strength to conquer old ghosts and love in each other to support each other and just be.

That is not to say the road isn't bumpy. I love how she makes him wait and wait for a date. I love how reed is with Gran and how they banter. The story about Little Mermaid cracked me up. I will not be able to watch that now with innocent eyes again. These two were meant to be. Peyton takes Reed from the endless stream of women and helps him find meaning in his life. Reed takes Peyton and wakes her up.

A story of love and acceptance where the characters face adversity and pain in order to come out stronger and together.

"Perfectly Broken" told the story of Peyton and Reed, two fractured individuals from opposite ends of the spectrum who were absolutely not looking for any kind of relationship but some how foundb it in the unlikeliest of companions.... each other.

A tragic, harrowing experience in her college years had left Peyton a shell of the girl she used to be. Despite years of therapy, those events still controlled certain aspects of her life and as such, men were a complete no no!!! And to deter the male population even more, she hid herself under baggy clothes and buried herself in work.. Jo Blogg would never guess this woman had lived through such a traumatic experience because on the surface, Peyton was a successful business woman and proud owner of the pie shop called "Adelaide." Yes there were unsuspecting moments her past still came back to haunt her but on the whole, she coped with those episodes and lived what most would call a normal life. I admired Peyton's character. She had a real strength, a confidence I don't think she was aware of and to achieve all that she had was amazing. I'm so glad she wasn't the stereotypical victim we often see in books. Nope, this woman knew what she wanted in life and would settle for nothing less even if she hadn't admitted it to herself yet.
"You can try a whole lot of different kinds of pies and never be satisfied. So you just keep trying them all. Or you can wait for that one special kind of pie that can satisfy you with one bite. So the question is- are you looking for variety, or are you willing to hold out for the real deal?"

Reed had his own secrets but hid them exceptionally well, coming across as a confident player that women just loved. I took my hat off to him because he never made a secret of who he was and what he wanted and women ... well I guess his honesty appealed because they flocked around him hoping to be his next lay!!! Again, a complete commitment phoebe, I knew Reed was hiding something and most of the characters in the book were in on it but no one was in the mood for sharing... not even with Peyton!!! Bugger I'd have to wait!!!

On the hunt for his next bed buddy (when was he not), Reed wasn't expecting to meet a woman who would quite happily reject his advances... because that had never happened before!! As in ever.... surely to god he wasn't losing his touch? Reed was intrigued by Peyton and for some strange reason, wanted to get to know her better and so his mission began.

I loved seeing the shift in Reed's character from player to... well I'm not quite sure but what I did see was a man who was relentless in his pursuit of this woman and he would try every trick in the book to get her It was kinda hot and rather sweet and he was absolutely a charmer. Who'd have thought Reed Langston (self confessed playboy) might actually like a woman a bit more than just for a one night stand!!!
"Well I've had variety, It left me hungry, unsatisfied, even a bit sick sometimes. But one bite, one nibble of the real deal- of you- leaves me happy, content, wanting more of you, and only you."
Despite his best efforts, Peyton wasn't about to change her mind any time soon even though she found herself strangely attracted to this man!!! I could have high fived this girl because I can only imagine Reed could charm the hind legs off a donkey but Peyton stuck to her guns. She knew what she wanted and would settle for nothing less. You go girl.
"You can't fix me," she said.
"I'm still going to try. And if you can't, I'll share your scar with you."
"But I'll still be broken."
"You're not broken," he said. "You're under renovation."
As the connection built and the attraction grew between this couple, I loved that Reed was always a true gentleman. He never pushed Peyton for more than what she was willing to offer and would wait (even if it meant getting blue balls!!!). This woman really was something special!

The banter between Reed and Peyton was brilliant and at times, simply laugh out loud hilarious but their road to finding happiness would not be a straight forward one. With secrets festering under the surface and a deep rooted fear of rejection if these revelations ever came to light, I could sense trouble ahead. And to top it off, despite having a cheer leading squad in the form of Quinn, Adelaide, Dr Lorraine, Bret and Marion, there were still others who were ready to throw a spanner in the works and couldn't bare for this relationship to work. Be prepared for a war of words and even the odd cat fight between women... don't you just love a bit of drama!!!
"I don't care about the cracks," he whispered. "Cracks give character."

Despite the main characters being really likable, I really struggled to connect with them on an emotional level. I think this was for two reasons. Firstly, despite "Perfectly Broken" being written in dual POV, it was also in third person which meant I didn't feel the depth of heart break, the anguish, the pain these characters went through, I didn't get the butterflies in my stomach, the nervous energy with the development of Reed and Peyton's relationship and I really missed that. Secondly, I don't the pacing of the story helped. There were moments I felt the book dragged and I found myself skimming the pages looking for something more.

Unfortunately, there were also moments I was left a little disappointed with the direction the story line took. An example would be the sub plot around Reed's father that was built to perfection. I was desperate to know what the deal was with his father... what the hell had happened for Reed not to want to know him? And even when it all came out in the wash and Peyton found out, I was still left in the dark... nothing like keeping the reader waiting. Whatever it was must have been pretty serious considering the repercussions of these revelations and so I waited with baited breath. Well, let's just say, I was left sorely disappointed with the outcome of this one. It was like... is that it... where's the rest... surely there's more.. she can't have reacted the way she did over that? Really? I was gutted!!!!

So all in all, "Perfectly Broken" was an okay read with a story line I feel would have worked so much better had it been told in first person and maybe with sub plots that had a bit more meat to them and as such, I rated it 3 Hearts.

Last year I read and reviewed First Position by Prescott Lane. Now she is back with her second published book and after reading it, I can confidently say that Prescott Lane is indeed, a very talented writer. She has the ability to hook you in only a few short pages into the story. I actually spent some time contemplating that. There are certain authors that I think are just blessed with this gift of storytelling. Their words seem to flow effortlessly as their stories unfold and not one thing pulls me away, their delivery and editing are flawless, and I think you can agree, that is not always the norm in the self-published world. This is an indie author to watch, people, because what she does is magical.

Peyton Mayfield is the Perfectly Broken heroine in Prescott Lane's latest release. A beautiful and shy girl, once upon a time young and vivacious, now content to live her life as inconspicuous as possible. It tells you right in the plot summary that she has endured years of trauma therapy so I hope that makes it obvious to the reader that she has been brutally victimized. I feel it is important to point this out in case this type of violence is a trigger for anyone as she does recount the brutal attack she endured. Peyton is not the type of girl that is stunningly gorgeous and acts all aloof about it. Personally, I am tired of those type of characters. Peyton goes out of her way not to be noticed and therefore has no clue how anyone could be interested in her when she intentionally keeps herself hidden under baggy clothes. Like so many women, Peyton believes she is at fault for her attack and is content to live a quiet and unassuming life running her pie shop and spending time with her best friend Quinn. Peyton considers herself damaged goods and has resigned herself to the fact that no one will find her desirable once she shares her ugly past.

"You can try a whole lot of different kinds of pies and never be satisfied. So you just keep trying them all. Or you can wait for that one special kind of pie that can satisfy you with just one bite... So the question is - are you just looking for variety, or are you willing to hold out for the real deal?"

Reed Langston, hails from a wealthy New Orleans family and willingly embraces his bad boy reputation. Reed is a professed player but you quickly come to realize that is the shield he hides behind. No one can hurt you if you don't let them in. As you peel back the layers you find a man with his own broken pieces. He is restless, not sure what he is looking for anymore. The casual hook ups provide little lasting relief, he is at odds with his father over their tumultuous relationship and his best friend and wingman has happily settled down into a committed relationship. What Reed isn't expecting is to have his life turned completely inside out by a pair of baby blue eyes and a piece of Devil's Food Chocolate Praline pie. I cannot rave enough about Reed Langston. This is a man, who for all intense purposes you would expect to be a complete jerk, and he is not. Reed is patient and kind and gentle and did I mention patient? I mean, patient as a Saint. See what I did there? New Orleans. Saints. Anyway, for a man that is used to having all of his needs satisfied, it is never about him. He is focused solely on romantically pursuing Peyton and he listens to her. Really listens. He is never greedy or pushy with his desires and always respects Peyton's demands. He puts her first and is protective and jealous of anyone he identifies as a threat. He knows when to back off and give her space and even when she pushes away, he pushes back. All this before he even knows what lies in Peyton's past.

The secondary characters are top rate and brilliantly written. One of my favourite's has to be Dr. Lorraine, Peyton's therapist. Hell, I'm pretty sure I would seek therapy if this woman was the one delivering the advice. She is unconventional in her methods and provides a lot of humour. I knew I loved her from the get go while she is encouraging Peyton to reclaim her sexuality and go get laid but when she calls a raging witch from Reed's past a C U Next Tuesday, she solidified her idol status in my eyes. I can't even quote the awesomeness of what Dr. Lorraine said because she drops the 'C' bomb too many times. Peyton's best friend Quinn is the feisty, outgoing, speak your mind, stereotypical Southern woman whose love for fashion is unparallel. As superficial as Quinn may come across, she loves Peyton with all her heart and is an incredibly supportive, overprotective best friend. Bret, Quinn's boyfriend and Reed's best friend, is the link that brings them all together. I would feel I was leaving someone out if I didn't mention that both Reed's mother and Peyton's grandmother are strong inspirational women in their own rights. All the character's in this book are fantastic... well except for Reed's father and the bed buddy, but Dr. Lorraine told you all you need to know about her up above.

Beautifully Broken IS a beautiful story about healing, trusting and learning to love because love IS patient, love IS kind, and love will cause many a tear to fall.

“You are not broken. You are not dirty. And I’ll spend the rest of my life kissing every inch of you until you believe me.”

Peyton felt broken inside, and I can’t say I blame her. I would feel the same way having gone through at least half of what she endured. She had blocked out the world, especially men, and hid behind baggy clothes and her very successful pie shop. She spent most of her time with her witty best friend, Quinn, whom I absolutely adored. She and Peyton were practically inseparable. Quinn had been there for Peyton every step of the way, helping her heal. They were more than best friends, really, they were sisters.

One chance encounter brought Peyton and Reed Langston face-to-face. See, Reed was Brett’s best friend, and Brett was Quinn’s boyfriend. It only took one meeting to light the fireworks between Peyton and Reed. Despite Peyton’s greatest efforts, she could not resist Reed. He wanted her and so he pursued her. He couldn’t understand why, but he was without an ounce of a doubt, drawn to her. He could see past her baggy clothes and standoffish attitude. He saw her.
“Please don’t let your fear win. I think we’re pretty damn perfect together.”

Reed and Peyton had a very strong connection. They both had their fair share of issues, but together, they just fit perfectly. Unfortunately, not everything came easy for them. Suffice it to say, Reed’s reputation caused some emotional angst throughout the book. You see, he wasn’t a man that was known for having long term relationships, hell, he was a proclaimed player. He had a reputation that followed him everywhere, but he was also a man judged by things that had nothing to do with him. His dad’s reputation, especially, haunted him, tormented him, and threatened his future with Peyton. It resurfaced demons for Peyton that weren’t quite buried yet.
“You can’t fix me.”
“I’m still going to try. And if I can’t, I’ll share your scar with you.”
“But I’ll still be broken.”
“You’re not broken. You’re just under renovation.”

Thankfully, Reed was not a man that gave up easily. Despite his obstacles, he proved to Peyton that he loved her. That he was all in. His protective, alpha side? YU-MMY. Definitely made me love him even more.

Towards the end, I feared this book would end up being a cliffhanger because I was around 98% and things were a bit messy between Reed and Peyton. But rest assured, things ended up working out. The epilogue, especially, was a delight to read. LOVED their #HEA. LOVED it. They truly deserved it.

I recommend this book to all the hopeless romantics out there that enjoy a good love story with a touch of angst and a yummy hero. Go one-click!

Peyton is broken, or so she assumes, she lives alone in the house she grew up in with her grandparents. Her parents died when she was very young and all the family she has left now is her grams. She lives a very mundane life, getting up every morning to run, shower, put on her baggy clothes and head to the bakery she owns. Such a beautiful woman on the inside, and outside as well, she hides behind her baggy clothes because, even after all the years of therapy, she still believes that she was to blame for what happen to her that horrible night in college. She doesn’t date, in fact she pushes men away. She spends most of her time at her bakery or with Quinn, her best friend, when she can pull her away from her boyfriend Bret. Through Quinn’s boyfriend is how Peyton meets Reed. Reed, he’s quite the charmer, can get any woman he wants and he knows it. He jumps from bed to bed, girl to girl, not wanting a relationship with anyone. When Reed meets Peyton for the first time he’s taken aback, not sure what to think of this beautiful girl with the most beautiful baby blue eyes. He instantly wants her and she also finds him interesting and attractive. But it’s not that easy for Reed, Peyton isn’t some prize he can win and toss away when he’s done, she has more self-worth for herself than to let this man use her. She’s, of course, heard some of the stories about is sleeping habits and instantly says no to a date when asked. But there is something about her that Reed just can’t let go of, she’s not like any other woman he’s met, she different. He’s not giving up, and after time he wears her down enough that she agrees to a date. Who wouldn’t agree to a date after all of the ways he shown her she was special to him. She’s not just a buffet to him, she’s a 5 star meal. For someone who was a player, which he was, he sure did do a complete 360. He’s a changed man, but will both of their pasts ruin what they have gotten to know and love about each other? They’re both keeping something away from the other, not wanting the other to know for the same reasons.

This book was amazing, I loved every minute of it. It was a long wait for him to get her to trust him, but when she did it really got good. Don’t get me wrong, I said I loved every minute of it, it’s just that it gets better and better. I read this in one night, I couldn’t sleep until I finished it. It was well worth the massive book hangover and the two hours of sleep I got. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read a very beautiful, very well written story. I give Perfectly Broken 5 stars.

PERFECTLY BROKEN is a captivating story that grabbed me from the first page. Peyton Mayfield lives in New Orleans. She’s a young, pretty woman, still trying to recover from things that happened in her past. Peyton doesn’t have any interest in dating and does her best to detract attention by wearing baggy clothes to hide her petite frame. Peyton owns a pie shop called Adelaide’s and that’s where she first meets Reed. Reed Langston, an architect is discontented with his life. He’s a playboy bored with his playboy lifestyle. He feels unsettled, but isn’t sure what he wants. He is a commitment-phobe who has never been in a relationship. Once Reed meets Peyton, he can’t get her out of his mind and he starts to pursue her. Peyton knows Reed has a reputation as a man slut and isn’t interested in being one of his many conquests. She continually tells Reed no, but, he is relentless in his pursuit. The slow build up to their relationship makes the story feel real.

Although Reed is a philanderer, he is endearing and vulnerable once you have a glimpse beyond his playboy façade. He is always patient, sensitive and sweet with Peyton and I loved that about him. It touched my heart the way Reed was clueless, yet always trying to please Peyton. I enjoyed Quinn, Peyton’s best friend and Quinn’s fiancé, Bret. They were good for comic relief in this story. Some of the things Quinn said to and about her boyfriend, Bret made me laugh out loud. It’s hard for me to believe this is Prescott Lane’s second book, because she is such a talented writer. This story has all the right elements for a perfect book, strong dialogue, realistic characters, a little angst to make the story compelling, but not too much and interesting secondary characters. I didn’t want this story to end!

Perfectly Broken is a book about healing. Sometimes the road to recovery isn’t easy when you have a constant feeling of being shattered. There is just something about reading about two broken characters who have each been through a lot, but find solace in one another. Don’t get me wrong though, this book although dealing with serious issues is fun, endearing and has you cheering for everyone involved.
Reed being the playboy he is lives fast and hard. That is until he sets his eyes on Peyton and falls fast and hard. They both have issues, but Peyton is still trying to pull from the depths of hell she once suffered. Stuck in her own broken shell she doesn’t want anyone noticing her. Here is where I fell in love with Reed. He was persistent and willing to fight finally for a change in his life—Peyton.
I enjoyed the story line in this book a lot. It was a fast paced read and it just flowed. The POV changed a couple times and that through me off just a little. Peyton pulls you in with the pain she has endured and you just want to see her have an ounce of happiness. I will definitely be reading future work from this author as she writes a strong male.

Peyton didn't know if she could start over again, after a traumatic event she had rebuilt herself but she wasn't sure she could ever trust again. That is until she meets Reed who is the epitome of bad boy.

Reed is trying his best to be self prophesied after his tumultuous life with his father. He is living up to the reputation until he meets Peyton who walks away from him. Reed decides she is worth the work, but slowly he begins to realize she is his everything and he will do whatever he can to keep her in his life.

Wonderful read, it was about strength, love, and perseverance. Perfectly Broken takes it's time to build the character and lets the story naturally unfold. I was rooting for Peyton and Reed..

This book was an absolute dream to read. Seriously. The characters completely suck you into the story and so does the author's writing--which is flawless. The character's banter will have you smiling silly but make no mistake, the story will pull at your heartstrings too. To boot this story is written in such a way that you can see other character's thoughts and once again the transition between thoughts is for lack of a better word flawless.

Reed at the beginning is a typical player but as the story progresses, we see how much he loves Peyton. So... for me this book deserves a well deserved 5stars (Loved it)

A cute, fast paced love story. Peyton is a broken soul who has suffered through a terrible, traumatic experience. She was barely surviving dealing with her pain. Reed, a bonafide manwhore is immediately taken and suddenly has the urge to claim her. Reforming his slutish man ways, he commits to win her over. Peyton falls deep but fears her past will destroy their future together. When these two finally come together, you are treated to a side of Reed that is tender and sweet.
