He’s rich. Handsome. Charming. And a social pariah. Perfect husband material.
I never expected to be a runaway bride. Leaving my jerk of a fiancé at the altar seemed like a great idea at the time but has left me with a laundry list of problems. Problems I can only outrun for so long. I came to Sweet Side because it was about as far as I could get from the life I left behind, hoping to buy some time to come up with a plan to take control of my future. Instead, a plan finds me. Billionaire Fynn Hadaway is the total package. He’s tall, dark, and handsome, with a voice that could melt the panties off a nun. He’s also been having a few… issues of his own. Issues I think I can solve. As long as he agrees to my stipulations. The main one being, he becomes my new husband.
Filthy Liar is a standalone set in the world of Sweet Side. It might be your jam if you 👰🏻 Runaway Brides 💵 Billionaire British Heroes 💓 Praise 🌊 Ocean-Os 💍 Fake Marriages 🚫 No Third Act Breakup
Fynn and Valerie have excellent chemistry from the beginning, and both of them want/need the connection to eachother.
The way this suspenseful, steamy and addictive storyline spun around kept my attention and my fingers flipping pages!
I LOVE the running storyline with Sylvia and Elaine, as they are Incredibly entertaining women. I encourage you to read this series in order, preferably before Mistle-Ho and The Ruckup, to avoid spoilers.
But whatever order you read them in, you'll find it incredibly easy to connect with the characters and the writing. I can not wait from the next new release from this talented author.
I loved going back to Sweet Side and seeing some familiar faces.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between Flynn and Valerie. Their start was a little rocky with a side of deception, but I feel like it was essential for both character's growth.
Jessica is a tw@t and deserved Val's vengeance. It was delightful to see how fiercely protective both Valerie and Fynn are of each other.
And let me just say, Fynn and his dominate "Wife" got me every single time. Especially since he could be such a cinnamon roll the rest of the time.
I want to live in Sweet Side and be friends with all these characters!
Flynn is a genuinely good guy who happened to date the WORST person. Valerie is running away from a sham wedding and horrible family. She convinces Fynn to marry her to escape her awful parents and fiance while also fixing his falsely-ruined reputation.
Of course, set in Sweet Side, it comes with a colorful cast of characters, lots of action, and plenty of spice! Great choice for a quick, fun read—especially if you like steamy rom-coms with plenty of action!
i enjoyed this book and thought the premise was interesting. I did have some issues with it, though.
First of all, the Fynn of the opening chapter who was rapidly becoming an alcoholic because he was being viciously, if not violently, shunned by every woman in Sweet Side simply didn't in any way match the Fynn in the rest of the book. Given how the gossip machine worked in the town--which was commented on--I didn't buy that no one seemed to be aware that he was a billionaire, nor did I believe the first Fynn could run a multinational company effectively.
Secondly, I had a really hard time reconciling the naive and innocent Valerie who had run away from an arranged marriage and who was hiding from her family with a woman who had graduated at the top of her class at university in Marketing, who had a genius business sense, and who had invested her 5 years of salary into well over a million dollars.
I was also uncomfortable with the suddenly Dominant Fynn and the meekly Submissive Valerie once they go married. Nor did I find his referring to her only as "wife" and never by name to be even slightly charming and cute.
But I found the book as a whole to be well-written and despite my reservations, I still wanted to find out what happened. There were no big surprises, but it certainly was better than some other books of this genre that I've read (or not finished).
I couldn’t put this book down. The characters were well written and the spice was *chefs kiss*. It was a lovely story with a HEA. I love Janice’s writing style and if you’ve read her other books you’ll love this too. I was pleasantly surprised that it was set in the Sweet Side world and thought the inclusion of a couple of characters from that series was well done. I can’t wait for the next one to come out and have already added it to my favourites list so I don’t miss when it does.
This is my second book by this author and she’s a new favorite!!
- no third act break up - smart characters - strong FMC, virgin - but it’s not an annoying plot point - strong/kind/obsessed/moral MMC. He believes in long-term monogamous relationships; was never a manwhore. - it’s a bit insta but also with real reasons for their connection - great communication/character growth - dual POV, HEA - great side characters who support, without over taking, the story - so much spice. Lots of “good girl” which she needs based on her past. - this is a true rom com; funny, feel good, with a hint of suspense/action. Even the action parts are infused w humor.
Valerie has run away from an arranged marriage and proposes that Fynn, who is a wealthy business man, with a scandal on his hands, marry her instead. His ex girlfriend claimed that he had cheated and spread lies about him throughout town. By them marrying, she can be safe and he can fix his standing in the community/business.
They are actually each other’s best match, even with the complications that they each bring to the situation. She is naive but also brilliant and he is a tough business man but also moral and has a heart of gold, who cares deeply for the people in his life.
I loved how Fynn saw her and supported her; he didn’t shy away from his feelings or pretend they didn’t exist. He owned them. She was the same; she knew she loved him and all her actions were based on her love for him.
I really love it when an author respects her characters and has them make thoughtful choices. 🙌. This definitely has fairy tale vibes, in that it’s clearly not a realistic plot. But hey - I’m good w that.
Best moments (spoilers ✋) - on the beach on their first date; when she meets Sylvia for the first time - how he responds when he finds out she’s a virgin; taking care of her w the bath etc - his mom (she’s a vibrant and real character) and his relationship w his mom. He visits her every afternoon as she recovers from cancer. - when she’s with his mom and cries from her support, which she’s never felt from her own parents - how the author made Fynn love Val’s character as much as he loved her for spicey reasons - when she went to the office to check on him and then became enraged when she saw Jessica there and defended him by going feral and punching her. SO good. Lol - her conversation w his mom after she realizes he paid the million dollars. Such a great mom/“daughter” moment. And again, an emotionally mature conversation for the author to include. 💕
I’m a sucker for a run-away bride story. Filthy Liar is a different take on the trope, and it was better than I could have imagined! Just when I thought I knew where the story was going, bam, it changed direction, and it was a roller coaster ride.
Fynn is a wealthy, handsome British businessman, and the rumors in Sweet Side have him marked as a filthy, lying cheater. Valerie needs a husband to solve the arranged marriage problems that put her on the run in the first place. Valerie’s desperate plan is a marriage of convenience deal with Fynn that will solve both of their problems. She is a woman determined to make it happen, even though she is unsure of herself. I cheered for her every time she shined, but felt bad when her insecurities rose back up.
I truly liked Fynn’s character. He is a genuinely good man, and he is good for Valerie. Nothing is better than a man who wants a woman to find her voice and advocate for herself. Everything is on her terms, and he wanted it that way. He loves and supports her.
Valerie needs praise, and Fynn is more than happy to tell her she’s a good girl. In fact, there’s a lot to learn about Fynn and what makes him happy. And Valerie enjoys every steamy moment of discovering the way to his heart. The way they made deals and negotiated with each other in a very personal way to further their physical connection to each other was fantastic. The deals are spicy, and both sides won. Every time he called her wife in a dominant way was so good.
I absolutely wanted them to be together. And I wanted to know how they were going to get to their HEA. These two were dealt an unfair hand in different ways, but they supported each other and ultimately fell in love.
Filthy Liar is a standalone, but there are pieces that connect it to Watts’s other Sweet Side titles. This book was previously released but was completely overhauled to give us a completely new story. It. Was. So. Freaking. Worth. It.
Hey book fam, prepare yourselves because Filthy Liar by Josie Watts is an absolute must-read! This story has everything you crave: a runaway bride, a swoon-worthy billionaire, and a fake marriage with all the feels and none of the third-act breakup drama.
Valerie is a runaway bride who’s fierce, determined, and ready to reclaim her life after ditching her jerk of a fiancé. She lands in Sweet Side, where she meets Fynn Hadaway—a billionaire with a British accent and a heart of gold, despite being a social pariah thanks to someone else’s lies. Their chemistry? Off the charts from the moment they meet.
Watts crafts a brilliant narrative where the sparks between Val and Fynn fly fast and furious. Val’s tenacity and Fynn’s protective, "my wife" attitude create a steamy and heartwarming dynamic. Their relationship evolves from a business arrangement to something real and profound, with each moment between them filled with passion and tenderness.
The plot is rich with emotional depth and twists that keep you glued to the pages. Both Val and Fynn carry heavy baggage from past betrayals, making their journey to trust and love each other all the more compelling. The way they navigate their secrets and fears, building a bond that’s unbreakable, is beautifully done.
One of the highlights of Filthy Liar is how Watts balances humor, romance, and suspense. From Val forming relationships with Fynn’s mom and Sylvia to the sweet, sexy, and downright hilarious moments between the main characters, every element comes together to create a story that’s as entertaining as it is emotionally satisfying.
Filthy Liar is a standout in the Sweet Side series, offering a perfect blend of heat, heart, and a happily ever after that will leave you cheering. If you’re looking for a romance that’s both exhilarating and deeply touching, this book is for you. Dive into Val and Fynn’s world and get ready to fall in love!
Welcome back to Sweet Side, where there’s an unfairly accused “filthy liar”, a bride running from her mafia family and sassy seniors! If you’ve read any of the previous books then you’ll enjoy seeing Sylvia and Elaine again but if not you’ll definitely enjoy Filthy Liar as a stand alone. Val shows up in Sweet Side hoping to use Fynn to escape an arranged marriage. Fynn is instantly taken with Val but feels like she wouldn’t be interested if she knew about the rumor being spread by his evil ex girlfriend. Once she convinces him (in quite a spicy way!) they could help each other Val and Fynn enter a marriage of “convenience” to allow Val to escape her Mafia father and ex fiancé and for Fynn to escape the awful rumor that threatens to destroy him professionally. The “fake” marriage feels very real to both Val and Flynn as they get to know each other. Fynn is sweet and sexy and his use of “wife” is the best! We also get to see the relationship between Fynn and his mother and watch Val’s relationship develop with her- so sweet! Add in the suspense and danger as both Val’s and Fynn’s past comes after them and you’ve got a book you won’t be able to put down! Sweet, spicy, funny, suspense and a HEA?? Perfect!
This was my first book by the Josie Watts pen name, and it was a fabulous read. Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, it can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. Fynn is a wonderful British hero at a very low point after someone else’s lies have damaged his reputation. Val is a runaway bride from Minnesota with a plan. There are some lies and omissions along the way that impact them, but they make it through. I loved Val. She is a fighter who will do anything to protect her newfound independence from her family and her man. Fynn and his “my wife” protective attitude was wonderful. I loved that while their marriage was a business deal, they also agreed that it would be real. I loved that there was no third act break up. I loved the relationship Val formed with Fynn’s mom and with Sylvia. I adored the steamy moments between Fynn and Val and the way he takes care of her. Lies become truths, karma comes around, and Fynn and Val get the HEA they deserve. This was a fun read that makes me want to read the rest of the books set in this cute little town. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
But don't worry karma catches up with the Filthy Liar.... Fynn catches the woman of his dreams in Val.... And Val is caught by Fynn, the most amazing man, he really sees her, not her name, her value as a business transaction or her virginity.....but her. This is an emotional tornado of a book, both Val and Fynn have been used and betrayed, in different ways, but by people they should have been able to trust. So trust doesn't come easy, they have secrets, fears and a mountain of emotional baggage, but they also have oceans of chemistry that is never being ignored. I love the bond Val and Fynn from, the understanding, the acceptance and the hope for the future. I hate that the blows for them keep coming, some people are just relentless and evil, but love (and having contacts that operate in the grey) will always win out! This book manages to be sweet, sexy, dangerous, funny, heart breaking and heart warming, it is a great read on Kindle Unlimited and a fantastic start to this new series. I look forward to Gavin's book in October.
I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this. The cover caught my eye first and after reading the blurb, I was intrigued so I signed up for the ARC and I was not disappointed.
You’ll enjoy this book if you like these tropes… ♡
♡ Runaway Bride ♡ British Billionaire ♡ Praise ♡ Ocean Hero ♡ Fake Marriage ♡ Opposites Attract ♡ Swoonworthy ♡ No Third Act
This book is a standalone in the Sweet Side series. This book follows Valerie and Fynn. Val is a runaway bride, trying to escape an arranged marriage. Fynn is a rich handsome British businessman, who is hated by an entire town for being a cheating playboy after his ex started a rumour about him.
Valerie and Fynn have an instant attraction after meeting each other in a bar in Sweet Side. The chemistry was immediate and the banter was top-tier! Valerie presents Fynn with a plan that may help them both and that he can’t refuse.
This was just a fun, entertaining and interesting read. I enjoyed it and I can’t wait to discover more about this town and this series.
Back to Sweet Side for an exciting rom-com by Josie Watts. This book was so unexpected in many ways, Ms. Watts has you falling for the “Filthy Liar” right off the bat and hating the woman who started the lies about him. Fynn is a British businessman living in Sweet Side and refusing to leave when the rumors start because of his mother (gotta love a momma’s boy!) and then enter Val who has a plan to help both herself out of her predicament as a Mafia princess runaway bride and Fynn’s filthy liar reputation.
You will fall in love with all of these characters except the exes who you will hate! The way Fynn treats Val is amazing and he “thinks” he is falling for his wife! I loved this book from beginning to end and had trouble putting it down to sleep. Do not hesitate to read this book even if you haven’t read the previous Sweet Side books because there is no need but you will see a bit of Sylvia and Elaine in this book which is always a pleasure! Well done Ms. Watts!
This is the first book I have read in the Sweet Side series, and I have to admit, it made me want to go back to the beginning and start the series from scratch. Which I will do as soon as I get through my ARC's. I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction between Fynn & Valerie, not to mention Fynn's mom as well as Elaine and her mom Sylvia. I felt like perhaps we should've had more interaction between Val & Sylvia and maybe even with Fynn's mom. My heart absolutely broke for Val when she found the much-needed love from Fynn's mom and how she soaked it up. As soft as Val is throughout the book, she has a will of steel and will protect what is hers, no matter the consequences...point in case her breaking Jessica's nose, OMG that was the best ever! Val stood by Fynn, getting to know him, however she never believed the rumors completely, she wanted to give Fynn the benefit and boy did it pay off. Like I said, I enjoyed this book so much, that I will start the series soon.
TITLE: Filthy Liar AUTHOR: Josie Watts (aka Janice Whiteaker) SERIES: Scandal in Sweet Side SERIES ORDER: 5 RELEASE DATE: 6/28/2024 GENRE: Romantic Comedy RATING: ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 ------ DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this book, and being back in Sweet Side with glimpses of Sylvia and Elaine from previous books in the series. No, you do not need to read the previous books. Sylvia and Elaine are Sweet Side residents that pop up every now and then to either cause trouble, Sylvia, or to clean up trouble, Elaine.
The chemistry between Val and Fynn was electric from the moment they meet! I loved the two of them together and how they complemented each other! I loved Fynn’s dirty side, and I loved that Val was so into it!
I really liked Gavin, Fynn’s roommate, and hope his story is next in this series because he had me intrigued in this story!

I can not get enough of these Sweet Side books! This one is a wild ride go a marriage of convince that turns into a very real romance between a runaway bride and our Sexy AF British Hero.
Fynn and Valerie have the same goals fix his reputation and keep her asshole Mafia Father from dragging her back to her old suffocating life.
If you like a little intrigue in your Romcoms that this book and all the other Sweet Side books will be right up your ally!
With Janice/Josie’s patented spiciness this book with keep you turning pages and steamy up your glasses.
Thank you Janice for this ARC all opinions are my own!
Filthy Liar introduces us to Sweet Side’s newest resident, Valerie, a runaway bride from Minnesota. She needs help with loosing her v card and maybe an arranged marriage for a year to discourage her wannabe gangster sperm donor from coming after her. We also meet Flynn Hadaway, aka Filthy Liar by the women in town thanks to his ex girlfriend telling lies (I’m not even mentioning her name). Val hears about Flynn’s problems and hopes she can help improve his image while she is kept safe. There are side characters worth mentioning too. Elaine runs the Mafia in the area. Her mother Sylvia is a hilarious character and I hope we see more of her. Fynn’s mother is Sweet, nurturing and just what Valerie needs. This is a funny, sweet emotional read and you won’t be able to put it down.
“I THINK I have an addiction, and it’s my new wife.”
Fynn Hadaway got a bad rep around town after a bad breakup and some misunderstanding. He wouldn’t mind getting help in fixing his name around town. Valerie Berdard is a runaway bride with a plan and that includes getting Fynn to agree to be her groom.
With a perfectly executed “meet cute” Val got Fynn’s attention with no problem, now she just has to convince him to agree to her plan.
Fynn with his British accent is as swoony as can be with a protective nature, an unexpectedly dirty mouth and alpha tendencies in the bedroom, can’t ask for anything more! Val, beautiful, determined and intelligent just needed some love, support and affection and I love how she found that with Fynn and his family and friends in their little small town.
A fun fake marriage romance with humor romance, spice and a dash of suspense.
Filthy Liar is a standalone novel set in the Sweet Side World. It is a contemporary, m/f, fake marriage romance with a runaway bride, no third act break-up, a billionaire British hero, and so much more.
This is such an entertaining read. I loved the characters so much! Fynn and Valerie are electric together and have scorching chemistry. I loved how the relationship develops between these two.
The writing, pace, and flow of this story are terrific, as are the characters, character development, storytelling, storyline, and world building. This is definitely a book that I would recommend.
4.4 stars!! Man, this couple was a hoot. Fynn and Valerie are wonderful. The book started a little off for me but I got hooked by chapter 4. I was laughing and smirking at the banter in this book. Valerie is running from her family/life and wants to use Fynn to help her break free. Fynn has been painted as a douche in the town and he's been struggling with that. The secondary characters are hilarious too. I hope we get another story out of this town. This was an enjoyable story that did not disappoint.
Fynn and Val are chef's kiss perfect. I am so glad I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy from the author. Fynn is so broken and hurt in the beginning of this story and I am so happy that Val was able to lift him up. I love how he shows his soft side. I love his protective nature and his love of family and friends. I love how Val grows strong and show her grit and determination while staying sweet and soft until she has to show her feral side. I truly love them together. I hope we get more from Sweet Side.
Normally, I find this author’s books to be SO highly underrated. All of the books from Sweet Side have been so fun and sweet. The women have been strong and smart and kickass, and the men have just literally fallen at their feet and worshiped them.
My issue with this one, however, is Valerie and Fynn’s relationship did not feel real to me. From his mom to his vocabulary to their whole mafia-adjacent thing. It was just weird and not like her other books at all. Not to mention, there were so many grammar mistakes. This one was pretty disappointing to me :(
Another couple in Sweet Side that does not disappoint! These two are the hottest couple in Sweet Side by far!! 🌶️🌶️🌶️ Fynn falls hard and fast for the new girl in town, Valerie, when she tries to pick him up in a bar. He had no idea what he was in for...turns out neither did she. Valerie has spent her life wanting to be wanted, she never expected it to happen like this...she thought she was just setting herself free by tying her to a husband but she got so much more! I want a Helena!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Fynn got a nasty rap from a woman he was dating, and unfortunately, the whole town believed her. After 6 months being treated as a pariah, Valerie comes on the scene. Valerie needs him for her own agenda, and manages to talk him into if he helps her, she helps him! The stakes are high, and the danger factor ramps up to a thoroughly entertaining story that will keep you entranced! Make sure you have enough time to read this in one sitting; you will not be able to put it down!
I absolutely love the Scandal in Sweet Side series. It's so much fun. Filthy Liar has it all. Romance, spice, and a dash of suspense.
Poor Fynn had some bad publicity and was planning on having a woe is me party at the local bar and indulge in a bottle. Instead he meets Valerie. Though Val didn't just happen to be at the bar. She came with a purpose. Fynn. That's when all the fun begins.
Fynn and Val have their ups and downs, but in the end they get a fantastic HEA.
Back to Sweet Side!! Fynn & Valerie were so sweet together and of course exactly what each other needed. This was a fun story that gave us a different take on a runaway bride and a different type of billionaire. I loved how genuinely their marriage of convenience developed into something more. Fynn’s mom was the perfect side character for Val, too. This book gave us a great story, with a little bit of suspense. And don’t forget Fynn’s use of the word Wife! 🔥
Super cute marriage of convenience!! Fynn had been having some women problems, when his entire townful of women were boycotting him for allegedly cheating on his girlfriend. Val needed him to help escape her father and the marriage he arranged for her.
This had the BEST characters! Everyone was fantastic. This was spicy, heart warming, hilarious and lovable!!!
Started this book and thought no it’s not my cup of tea as Fynn was so wishy washy at tge start. Gave it another chapter and I just could not put it down till I finished it. Loved everything about this couple, his mum and her butler, the admin, the florist and Elaine and her mum. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. Not quite mafia but omg it’s just terrific and I do like retribution and this author delivers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as am an avid Josie Watts fan of this series. Oh my, this couple’s chemistry is truly off the charts. We meet Valerie, a virgin and a runaway bride. Flynn is someone who the town has become a pariah due to his ex-girlfriend. How this story evolves and the problems that ensue are entertaining, unexpected and hilarious. This is an emotional read with twists and turns, that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. Be on the look out for the surprise towards the end. A fabulous addition to the Sweet Side series, you won’t be disappointed.
