Book six sees the granny witch twins, Mae and Lela, prepare to head to Scotland with the rest of their family and familiars, in an effort to break the curse on their ancestor’s ghost, Florie. They need to take Florie’s old cauldron plus the cursed gold coins with them, as they seek out their cousin Sharon. Bertha knows someone that can create a portal for them to travel and they leave the next morning. The portals take them to a vampire owned castle near their cousin’s place and they hve been guaranteed there will be no vampires on site during their stay. They do however, end up with a butler called Archibald and lots of waiting staff! The group consists of Bertha, Mae and Ted, Lela, Joseph and Eleanor, as well as last minute addition Harriet, whose magic has been going too haywire for her to stay in college. What none of them expected, was how much more powerful their granny magic would be in the birthplace of their magic and that brings a few other shocks to the Myers-Cable-Sparks-Sullivan clan. The original twins were Margaret and Agnes, with Margaret being the one who practised black magic, causing her own sister’s death and the placing a curse on the coins. After finding cousin Sharon, she takes them to see her Great Aunt Iona, who herself has been looking all of her life for the source of the original twin’s magic.
It seems being direct descendants and twins themselves, Mae and Lela, may well be the key to access the magic’s source and is the reason no one has ever found it before. The broom they brought with them is chomping at the bit to be released on its search for the source and it seems to definitely know where to go! A couple of surprising familiars join the clan, with an unusual name linked to the Scottish food they got served the first night, and a smaller version of legendary creature, which adds to the fun. They have to take the cauldron and the coins with them and will need to put them into the source of their magic, along with Mae and Lela, where more ghostly greetings will come to them all. Florie can finally take her final journey and the original pair of twins and their mother will come to an understanding and forgiveness, all tied to how and where the twins were born all those years ago, affecting how they turned out! A lovely end to the tale and a sudden windfall that they must decide what to do with. It will be interesting to see if their additional powers end up sticking with them all when they return to the Wear Valley. I laughed so much as they faced a load of Scottish courses for their first meal, each described in full by the butler, especially when they asked what the Haggis was made of! Lots of amazing new magical abilities and some surprises from their old familiars as the magic of Scotland brings new skills. Great to see Florie finally able to go to her rest and the parade of ancestors they all got to see and some they could talk to at the end.
