You know that saying, “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is”? I wish I could say that quote is totally full of it. My life was good. I had a wonderful family, a loving mother and father. And then that life was ripped from me.
With my father gone, my mother remarried. Then I was accepted into an Architecture Program at Groveton College. And we started a new life. Everything was going well again. Until it wasn’t.
My new stepbrother Xayden and his best friends, Dekker and Seven, are hotter than the sun. But they are also complete pains in the you know where. From the moment we met, they’ve hated me. Oh, and they even have their little sorority pets to help in making my life a ton of fun. And by fun, I mean completely and utterly miserable.
And just when I think it can’t get any worse, I end up being the target of a mysterious someone who is hell-bent on torturing me.
Life isn’t good. Nothing about this existence is good. I wish someone would have told twelve-year-old me not to get too comfortable with what she had. That life will never ever be great again.
And that it’s only a matter of time before my world is completely shattered.
Shattered is a dark romance reverse harem. There are dark themes in this book but it does have a HEA. You can find the shopping lists on my website. Again, this is a dark romance. You have been warned.
Shattered is the perfect name for this book, because that is exactly what it did to my emotions. But not to worry, the whole book wasn’t emotionally damaging, just 90ish percent of it.
The story follows Aurora (Rory), whose mother has remarried and moved them from Las Vegas to Texas to live with her new husband and his son. Rory, who lost her father when she was younger, still mourns him, and didn’t want to leave her home and the memory of him behind. Her new stepbrother, Xayden, isn’t happy his father got remarried out of nowhere, and is even more upset when he finds out his father has paid for Rory’s college education, when he refused to pay for Xayden’s. So Xayden and his two best friends, Dekker and Seven, make it their mission to make Rory’s life miserable. Their end goal? Get her to leave Texas. However, the guys can’t seem to keep their feelings for Rory in check, and when bigger baddies come to play, they realize just how much they don’t actually want to hurt her.
I should have known after The Darkwood Academy series what to expect, but I didn’t learn my lesson. There were so many twists and unexpected turns that I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next half the time. You think you trust someone, and then bam, betrayal. Then there were people I thought were shady, but weren’t bad after all. Poor Rory went through it in this book, from constant bullying to the heartbreak at the end, but she never gives up. Then there is Xayden, Dekker and Seven, who you kind of hate right off the bat…well except Seven. He’s not as much of a bully as the other two, but he also doesn’t really do anything to stop it. When they get into protective/possessive mode though…swoon!
Thank you, Lynn, for another great story. I need a minute to recuperate though. This book is a why choose, dark, bully, stepbrother, college romance, with eventually protective MMCs and lots of suspense and drama. Make sure you read the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, because there are some intense scenes.
i am really enjoying this shared world. this is my second book in this series. this was fun to read, I really liked our main characters. the mental health aspects were pretty strong and the plot matched for the majority of the book. despite being a standalone, I think the story did what it needed to do.
what I didn’t like:
I am not too fond of the turning point towards the end. it felt like a lot was happening out of nowhere and didn’t really make sense to me. I think if this book was split into a duet, it could’ve really brought the two pieces together but alas it is a standalone.
special notes:
I did receive this as an arc but all opinions are my own. still debating on if I am purchasing a physical copy of this one.
tropes:
step siblings bullying academy enemies to lovers hurt/comfort traumatized fmc
triggers:
this book does contain dark and triggering content. please check the content warning listed at the beginning of the novel.
spice:
there are quite a bit of spice scenes but I skimmed them because I wasn’t particularly in the mood for it nor did I really care enough about the relationships at that point.
Enjoyed this one. I liked all the main characters even when the men were acting like a holes. This book had a lot of twists and took turns i never would have expected. One thing about this author is that they will have me at the edge of my seat while putting the characters through Hell and back.
Aurora and her men were very likeable to me. She had great Chemistry with all three of them from the very beginning. Even when they were supposed to "hate " her they never hesitated to get possessive over her or protect her. The way were absolutely in love with her. I loved Auroras fighting spirit. She was always standing up for herself till the very end.
Definitely recommend this one. Like I said it was filled with unexpected twist and turns, there's some spicy scenes and 3 men completely obsessed with their woman.
** ngl bc I read Lynn rhys other series i was literally distrustful of EVERYONE 😭😭
Aurora life changed when she lost her father in an accident now twelve years later her mother remarried, and they are going from Las Vegas to Texas. She is going to Grovetown College to be an architect. She meets her stepbrother Xayden who is extremely handsome but is extremely hateful towards her. Xayden and his friends Dekkar and Seven make her life miserable along with the mean girls. Her roommate Addy is amazing, but they keep bullying her. Weird things start happening like her disappearing and coming back bruised. Xayden, Dekkar, and Seven are trying to keep her safe, and figure out what’s going on. Can they keep her safe ? Great characters and storyline Highly recommended Amazing Book. I absolutely love Rory, Xayden, Dekkar, and Seven and their dynamic and character development Great supporting characters. This book has nonstop action, twist and turns, and the spice is so good. Read your trigger warnings and then go grab this amazing book
3-3.5⭐️ I DNF’d and skimmed too the end, I enjoyed the first part but just felt it lacked. The boys literally knew nothing about Rory and were obsessed with her? They met her a handful of times so it was just stupid to me. They were horrible to her, fat jokes, hacking into her college classes and letting girls pick on her and then she just sleeps with them? Just felt like everything was too rushed. Then the plot twist of the dads twin brother? I felt this book would have been better as a duet so that the plot could have been expanded more and not so rushed!
I was hooked to this story from page one. The start gets you invested in Rory's story, wanting to find out just what was actually going on.
I feel a lot of the first part of the story was setting up the relationships between Rory and our leading men - Seven, Dekker and Xayden - and then the plot comes powering through in the last third of the book. I almost feel as if the majority of it came out of nowhere - there were some small teasing hints throughout - but I almost would have liked to have it coming earlier. For a long time I felt the conflict of the book was the relationship between our four leads.
In saying that, though, I enjoyed the development of the relationship, even if I still can't quite wrap my head around Xay's motives for the bully aspect. I was thankful that a lot of the bullying was from outside sources - but also, at times, felt it went too far. It's hard to think that these characters are in their college years and honestly acting like teenagers. But it did serve the plot of the book well. I do also kind of wish there was more grovelling from the men.
I loved Rory's tenacity through it all; even though it seemed everyone was out to get her, she just wanted to follow her dreams and make her dad proud. On the flip side, she's definitely very naive still in putting herself in some of these situations.
The twist when it hits definitely hit a little out of left field, and was all very fast moving at some points that I felt I wasn't keeping up with what was happening. It was honestly kind of soap-opera-eque, but in that way you just have to keep reading because you just need to know the answers and the outcomes.
An enjoyable book, and I'm really loving the shared Groveton College world.
This book pulled on all my emotions (irritation, annoyance, anger, anxiety, rage and shock) which is why it was a 5-star book even though I did not care for any of the characters.
Aurora/Rory had gone through so much; her once happy life turned into a life of bitterness and grief. Now living in a new State with her mother and her new stepfather; Aurora's life went from depressing to downright awful. Her stepbrother Xayden was on a mission to make her life miserable and with the help of his 2 best friends and their groupies he ensured that Aurora suffered.
It was so hard for me to like the MMC's. They were absolutely deplorable individuals. I also hated how the FMC was so quick to jump in bed with each of the guys simply because her body betrayed her. She was just as toxic as they were. These guys treated her like dirt and allowed their groupies to torment and humiliate her; sorry but there's no coming back from that in my opinion. I don't care how "hot" a guy/man is.
Tak about plot twist. I don't condone violence, but I was so happy to see Xayden, Dekker and Seven get knocked down a few pegs and experience the same hurt, pain, devastation and grief that Aurora had been dealing with.
Secrets are revealed and Aurora and her guys find themselves in the middle of some sinister plan that has been in the works for years. Not that the truth is out how will the guy's cope with the backlash as well as keep Aurora safe from the secrets of the past that she was never aware of?
OMG, this book had so many surprises, once I started I could not put it down. This book is part of the Groveton College Series. It is a standalone, dark, bully, stepbrother, why choose story that has a great plot line. I honestly did not see where this story was headed. Lynn did an absolutely fantastic job building up the suspense and playing it out.
Rory is one tough chick, who has been to hell and back. She doesn't back down and is always willing to fight for herself. She has some great come back when she smarts off to her tormentors. Everyone has their breaking point after so much abuse, she really tries to hide hers from everyone. She makes some really great friends while at school, her roommate is one of her fiercest defenders. I love the bond these two share.
Xayden, her stepbrother and friends, Dekkar and Seven are a problem from the beginning, over time they let their true feelings start to show. They become her biggest supporters and protectors. There are so many unknowns in the book and it was shocking to read all the revelations. So many connections you did not see coming, everything is connected.
This book has it all Drama, Suspense, Secrets, Spice, Heat, Stalking and Action. Please check your trigger warnings before you read, other wise enjoy.
Shattered is such a great book that put my emotions through the ringer. I had annoyance, anger, and definitely hot and bothered, to swoony emotions too.
There's Aurora (Rory) that lost her father when she was 12 and her mom ends up getting married years later and this has Rory moving from Las Vegas to Texas to go to Groveton College. Here she meets her step brother Xayden and his friends Dekker and Seven. They are all hot but treat Rory terribly at college. They even let the sorority sisters be mean to her.
Xayden has a hard time with having Rory and her mom enter his life because it's been him and his dad and all of a sudden there's a new step sister and everything has changed. All three of the guys are attracted to Rory but are not happy with her there seeming like taking from Xayden.
As the book goes along, you notice some strange things happening and have no idea what's going on. The guys soon find that they need to protect Rory and boy oh boy does it get good. Some twists and turns happen in this book and in true Lynn Rhys fashion it hits and hard. An amazing read. Need to read to find out what happens. Thank you for writing this book.
Dark College Bully/Enemies to Lovers/Why Choose With Heaping Amounts of Twists & Turns. (Standalone Within Shared World by multi-authors in Groveton College series)
This book is wild from start to finish with all the twists and turns that follow Rory, Xayden, Seven, & Dekker. You get the bully new stepbrother and his frat friends' angle, loss of a parent, new college, why choose dark suspenseful mystery, and spicy angsty moments. This book touches on just about everything you want in a dark college romance.
Rory and her guys have a rough start when they meet at first but as time passes each finds a connection that they can't deny. From bullying to protecting they form a found family vibes by the end. This story dives into each character's backstory briefly giving an understanding of who or what causes them to act out the way they do. The author sets up several suspenseful moments where you question who is after Rory and why along with spicy moments woven into the mix of all the craziness surrounding them.
So if you love a dark themed college why choose/RH with equal amounts of suspense and spice this is definitely one to grab.
This dark ‘why choose’ romance had so much to offer, it was like Pandora's box. So much mystery, stalking and the factor of the unknown was heavy in the air. I really enjoy a book, it has an academy setting and this one did not let me down.
Every nook and corner of the story is interesting and many portions are emotional with a fear of what will come next and how things are happening the way they are. It kept me on edge and made me read the book in a day.
After so long I found a book that made me read at a fast pace and I am happy with that. The characters did build up the plot in a way that I couldn’t keep the book down until it was very necessary.
Aurora is so strong and I admire her ferocity. The book has multiple POVs and Aurora’s was best. She speaks her mind and doesn’t shy away from keeping her opinions known. I love her character so much.
The guys are difficult at the start and I did not like them but they then redeemed themselves gradually as the story moved forward. The climax was fabulous and I recommend the book to everybody, give it a try. And I know Lynn Rhys writes stories beautifully even if they hurt a lot in the process.
While they say to never judge a book by its cover you certainly can judge this book by it's title because yep it did indeed shatter me.
For this instalment at Groveton College we follow Rory who has just moved to Texas after her mum remarries. Safe to say, as it often the case, her new stepbrother Xayden is not happy about the family union and even more enraged by his father paying for Rory to also attend Groveton while refusing to pay for him. Fair response in my opinion and negative points for dad. Anyway, Xayden and his two delicious besties Dekker and Seven decide to make Rory's life difficult to make her drop out and leave Texas. Sounds simple right? but when feelings start to evolve it is anything but.
If you have read Lynn's other work you will know to expect the unexpected and be ready for some heartbreaking twists and turns. She certainty delivered that again.
This was a well paced story with plenty to dig your teeth in to and enough spice to keep you warm at night.

Wowow!!! Totally gobbled up this piece of art! Dark romance for the win again with Lynn Rhys. She’s so talented in getting the reader invested in her story it’s amazing, truly. Be warmed that this book the story is not for the faint of heart as it has beautiful characters that you would love to hate and then hate to love. Be warned this is a dark romance. There are tons of triggers, Lynn does let you know this at the beginning of the book so head her warnings. I love how she gives all her time and care into the development of each character. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!! I give 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ for the scenes that are delicious. There are times that I was laughing and times that nearly brought the tears. The FMC is an amazing one she seems to be fairly relatable as well.
Omg, words can't describe this book. I got this book yesterday morning, and I read it throughout the day yesterday. I couldn't put it down. I wanted to scream at Xay. Like why do that. I even wanted to scream at Seven and Dekker. But of course, I kept reading the story.
Those twist, omg I did not see that coming. This book definitely didn't disappoint. It had the emotion, the suspense, and chemistry all in one book. This is hands down one of my favorite books.
Now, for the ending, I love it. From me being so bad and angry in beginning to be all sad and mushy at the end, I love this book so much. This gave me all the emotions that by the ending I didn't even know what to think. Go run and grab this book.
Get ready to enroll at Groveton College with Lynn Rhys. She is bringing the HEAT! With not 1, not 2, but 3 HOT men. I literally binged this book. A fast read.
Rory is my girl! She is fierce. The zingers she was slinging at the "mean girls", Monica and her posse was great. Even when she was kicked down, she came back swinging. A fighter for sure.
Let's talk about the guys...Xayden, Dekker and Seven. They may have started out as bullies but by the end, they did redeem themselves. The things they said and did to Rory may have been mean but I could not help but fall for them anyways. This was even before they turned nice.
You know the saying..."Double the Trouble", well in this case it is "Triple the Pleasure"!
Rory, Xayden, Dekker and Seven, not the match that I thought would be it, but the author did an amazing job winning me over. This book starts out with the guys doing everything they can to get rid of Rory (she’s Xayden’s stepsister and he has trouble coping with the fact that his father married her mother). And off course the girls from the sororities who hang out with the guys all the time, have no problem in making her life miserable. In my opinion, these guys needed to do a lot of groveling for the things they have done to Rory, and they did. But maybe it could have been a bit more… Oh, and those twists and turns near the end, didn’t see those coming. But still, it was an amazing read and I had a hard time putting this book down.
I'm not shattered. YOU'RE shattered. Action packed, hot, dark and twisted with some plot twists that leave you with a bit of a whiplash. LR always leaves me reeling - "Like, she's my one-click for life." True story. Rory goes from tragedy to tragedy, is no slouch when it comes to clap backs for sk*nks when they come after her and is a liiiiittle bit too forgiving, but I still adore her. Her hunkahunks could've grovelled some more, but I see where she's coming from. *wiping drool off my face* Found a new author I can't believe I missed, need to read more from this shared universe and I'm definitely back to one-clicking everything Lynn Rhys related. Unputdownable dark college bully romance - 100% recommend!
I had trouble finishing this book. I had not read anything by this author before, but I was pleasantly surprised by other books in the Groveton series so I figured I'd give it a shot. I don't like to give low ratings because people put in a lot of work to have their book published, but I am honest in how I feel about a book. Besides the errors and botched expressions, the characters' personalities were all over the place, especially the fmc. So much so that I kind of felt she was tstl. I mean, she is drugged, attacked, taken, beaten and had her room set on fire while sleeping in it and not once did she consider going to the hospital or the police. I don't care how confused you are, the first thing you do after an experience like that is NOT angry fuck your stepbrother...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Unfortunately, the book wasn't for me, I think I've seen enough of the mean girls in bully books.
Another thing I didn't like and I find very annoying is when authors (especially of RH) use other RH books to justify the unusual relationship the FMC might have.
I've seen it a few times, and while I try to ignore the mention of another book (plus another book I also DNF'ed lol) I wasn't invested enough in the story or the characters to continue reading anymore.
Pls authors, we don't read contemporary RH expecting for it to be not unusual! RH IS unusual irl, so I don't need you to justify why the FMC will have 3 guys as part of her harem!
I also found the pacing a bit slow, but it might be just me.
Another great book and storyline by Lynn Rhys in this Dark College Romance.
Loved the storyline and the twist and turns that this author wrote. I enjoyed the book and read it within days. It certainly didn't disappoint at all. There are triggers on the book so do read the warnings before reading.
Theses characters certainly were written really well you couldn't help but love them all even if you wanted to hate them at some points. Rory gave me mixed opinion but I loved her all the same I think she came across a niave at time especially by putting herself in certain situations. Great read.
The emotional rollercoaster experienced, from frustration with certain characters to being blindsided by unexpected twists, speaks to the power of Lynn's writing.
The combination of emotion, suspense, and chemistry made for a gripping read, solidifying its place among your favorites. The journey from anger to sadness reflects the range of emotions evoked, leaving me both exhilarated and contemplative.
The characters were incredibly well-written, making it impossible not to develop a connection with each of them, even when they tested my patience. Overall, it was a fantastic read that I highly recommend.
This book from start to finish had me glued to the pages as this story was so good I couldn't put it down. There was so much going on with twists and turns and a dum dum dum plot twist holy bejeezus what a rollercoaster ride that I didn't want to get off of.
I cannot tell you how good this book is you just need to read it and find out, but buckle up because it wil get bumpy and have you wondering wth was going on as it sure did me. lol I had to go back a reread a passage to make sure I had read it right. This is by one of my favorite new arthurs I had found and I'm afraid she's stuck with me.
This was an intriguing story, with lots of twists and turns that I definitely did not see coming! When Rory's mum remarries, she moves them both to Texas where life is not easy for Rory. There is lots of bullying, and then strange things start to happen. As the Love-Hate relationship develops with her step brother Xayden and his two best mates, Dekker and Seven, you never quite know whether they are trying to get rid of her or whether they are totally smitten. I loved how the unexpected twists and turns in the story were so unexpected, and how the relationships develop from hate to love in such a short time. An enjoyable read, with a nice HEA after lots of drama!
Shattered is a dark why choose romance and is part of the Groveton shared world.
Aurora lost her father in an accident 12 years ago, and now her mother is getting remarried and is moving her from Las Vegas to Texas where she will start at Groveton. Let's just say, when she meets her new step brother Xayden and his 2 friends, Seven and Dekker, they do not make it easy on her.
I don't wanna give too much away, just go read this book right now!!! The twists, the emotions, the spice, the characters, the plot, it will all keep you glued to your kindle reading. I didn't want it to ever end!!!
Another dark read from Lynn Rhys. There's mystery surrounding Aurora as she learns that she has to pick up the pieces of herself when her world comes crumbling down after losing her dad. Losing her mom to another man also leaves her in despair. As we meet Xayden, Dekker, and Seven, all bets are off, and the loves and hate start. The angst, push and pull, and relationship building of these four are hot and heavy throughout the book. Twists every now and then to complete the plot and the plot was unexpected in ways I didn't think would happen.
Beautiful broken is how this book left me! By that, I mean in a hardcore book hangover. Lynn did her thing with this one! Oh, my Xayden, Seven, and Dekker, ugh, are the perfect bullying men that turn out to be just perfect. Rory is ugh so good, too! These characters had me consumed from the very first page. Lynn has this way of making you feel like you are her character's. 5 star because that's the highest I can give. 10/10 recommend. Lynn is one of those authors that if she writes it, I will read it,because she's that good!
This book had me on the edge of my seat. When I thought I knew where the storyline was going - I found out I was wrong! This book has everything - amazing characters, great heat, a suspense and angsty storyline. I just want more from these boys and Rory. This RH, bully read has more than just that. I can’t put into words how much I loved this story but I want more - I would love to see more of them in their life ‘after.’ I won’t say after what because I don’t want to spoil it for you - what I will say is just READ THIS NOW!!!
