63 books313 followersI have always loved reading and I studied English at university just so that I could read a bit more. Next I found my way into secondary teaching and discovered that I loved it too: I got to read more books, show off and hang out with very funny teenagers. What a great job!
Teaching English also encouraged me to write. Soon I had planned and started lots of different stories, but they were all abandoned and shoved to the back of a drawer. Then, one day, the plot for Flirty Dancing came together; Bea’s story was so alive it was like a film running in my head and I knew it was a story I would finish.
Over the next few years, various exciting events distracted me from Flirty Dancing: I got married, travelled the world, was chased by an angry elephant (and a pack of dogs) and I had two babies. While I was sitting on trains, swimming in the Outback and raising two crazy girls, I kept thinking about Bea, and her friends, Betty, Kat and Pearl, until I realised I had planned three more books.
In 2013, after attending the Winchester Writers’ Festival, I plucked up the courage to send Flirty Dancing to Julia Churchill, a brilliant children’s fiction agent at A.M. Heath. With dazzling speed I was then signed by Bloomsbury to write the four books in the series.

I recently read Dead Good Detectives by this author and really enjoyed both the storyline and the style of writing, so was excited to grab the chance at reading something a bit different by McLachlan and again, I loved it!
I believe that this is actually a book 2 featuring Stink the fairy, but it really didn't feel as though I'd missed out on anything important and so assume that these would be great standalone reads too!
In this story, Stink the fairy is in need of a new wand and needs her best friend Danny to help her do a good deed to earn her reward.
Danny is taking the wizard role in the form play at school and needs some help to be the best - and Stink, thinking that this could be her good deed, brings an evil wizard through the fairy door - but things definitely dont go to plan!
The relationship between Danny and Stink was brilliant. Although obviously trying their best to help each other out, they weren't the best at accomplishing tasks. There were some hilarious moments as they try to navigate school and home life and also try to keep the wizard out of trouble too.
I loved that Danny grew through the story. He started off not being the most popular kid at school and we can all definitely relate to that!
So I really think this would be great for the target audience to get behind Danny and root for him to get through the chaos.
The chapters were short and concise and this makes this the perfect book for confident readers to pick up and put down in short periods - before teatime, bedtime or over the weekends - but also a great school library book too.
The storyline is fun, funny and engaging, with lots going on to hold your attention throughout.
I'm also pretty sure, from the look of the cover, that there would be some amazing and fun illustrations within the book too - which would also appeal if this was being read aloud to the younger age group.
As an audiobook this would be brilliant to have on for the school run or even on a longer journey - at only 2.5 hours long - this would make a great distraction.
Really enjoyed this and will try and catch up with Stink and Danny in book one soon and look out for future adventures too.

Stink tegen de Tovenaar kocht ik een tijdje geleden als leuk kinderboek om samen met mijn zoontje te lezen. Pas later kwam ik erachter dat dit deel 2 is in een serie. Gelukkig maakte dat voor het verhaal zelf weinig uit, al merkte ik wel dat deel 1 daardoor iets minder spannend aanvoelt om te gaan lezen.
Het verhaal gaat over Danny en een elfje genaamd Stink. Stink is via een elfendeur in Danny’s wereld terechtgekomen en hij helpt haar met het uitvoeren van goede daden, omdat zij daar elfengeld voor krijgt. Alles loopt prima, totdat er opeens ook een slechte tovenaar door de elfendeur komt. Dat was natuurlijk niet de bedoeling. De tovenaar is half slecht, wat het verhaal extra spannend maakt, en hij moet terug naar Elfenland. Dat blijkt nog een hele klus voor Danny en Stink.
Wat dit boek extra leuk maakt, is de vorm. Het verhaal is geschreven als Danny’s dagboek, waardoor het heel vlot leest. Het zit vol grapjes en leuke illustraties, wat het perfect maakt om samen te lezen. Een spannend, grappig en toegankelijk kinderboek dat hier goed in de smaak viel.

Om te beginnen hou ik van kleur in de boekenkast dus deze serie krijgt daar zeker extra credits voor. Waar het eerste deel knallend oranje was knalt dit deel dankzij de felle groene kleur er net zo goed uit. In het vorige deel had Danny het ergste elfje ooit genaamd Stink geholpen met een goede daad waardoor ze haar nieuwe vleugels kon kopen en terig ging naar Elfenland want dat was de afspraak. Helaas voor Danny is dit ondeugende elfje weer terug om zijn leven opnieuw op stelten te zetten. Haar vleugels werden in Elfenland afgepakt door pestelfen. Dit keer is Stink vastbesloten om te gaan sparen voor een nieuwe toverstok omdat die van haar het maar de halve tijd doet. Danny en zijn vriend Kabir zitten sinds een week op hun nieuwe school dus ze houden hun hart vast. Ze zijn bang dat Stink er voor gaat zorgen dat ze gepest zullen worden en daarom stellen ze een aantal regels op voor Stink waar ze zich aan moet houden. Echter houdt Stink zich helemaal nergens aan waardoor Danny steeds weer in de problemen komt. Een van de toppunten is wanneer Danny door de directrice op het podium getrokken wordt als voorbeeld-leerling voor de andere leerlingen. Juist op dat moment ontsnappen de vosjes van Stink die er voor zorgen dat Danny een of ander raar dansje doet op het podium. Dat levert hem de bijnaam Disco Danny op die hem nog lang zal achtervolgen en hem tegelijk razend populair (niet in de positieve zin van het woord) maakt op het internet. De klas van Danny gaat een uitvoering doen die de juf zelf geschreven heeft en de juf denkt dat Disco Danny overwaait als hij Danny de Tovenaar wordt. Om Danny weer populair te maken heeft Stink een plan bedacht want ze wil er voor zorgen dat Danny de beste doemtovenaar wordt en schakelt daarom de hulp in van Rufus Mistbaard, haar beste vriend van toen ze nog op school zat. Zoals je kunt verwachten verloopt dat plan niet helemaal zoals Stink verwacht had en worden de problemen alleen nog groter. Als dat allemaal maar goed afloopt.. Dit tweede deel is er wederom een om te lachen, gieren, brullen. Deze serie is er een die je absoluut gelezen moet hebben!

My 9 year old daughter came home with a paper copy of this book from the school book wagon visit and when I saw that it was available as an audiobook we decided to listen to it as well. I’ve found that her listening and reading along at the same time really improves her reading – and it works best with books that are illustrated.
She loved this book and to be honest it often had me laughing out loud along with her. We’d already listened to the first one in the series, so we knew all about S.Tink aka Stink the slightly rubbish fairy, who appeared to Danny after his younger sister gave him a fairy door for his birthday. So we were both engaged in hearing more about Stink and Danny.
After the disaster of the first story, Danny is keen to get rid of Stink as he’s starting secondary school but he agrees to help her again to ensure she’ll go back to fairyland. If she gets her ‘nuggets’ she can get a super-duper new wand that will solve all her problems. So, she must do a good deed for a human in ‘humany’ world and that is where the trouble starts.
This is an amusing, fun book perfect for 7+ children, who’ll like all the silly aspects of foxes shrinking and a wand that doesn’t work quite as well as it could, a wizard that is considered wicked but really hasn’t done anything that bad and the FBI – the Fairy Bureau of Investigation are out to get him. My daughter loved it and gave it five stars!
It’s well read by the narrator, who does all kinds of crazy voices – although why Kabir has a Scottish accent is never really explained! We listened to it in the car, before bed and whenever we could – love having the opportunity to listen to a book with her– and that all the voices aren’t on me! She’s a bit annoyed there isn’t a third one in the series yet, so we’ll have to look out for that when it comes.

Hier zijn drie dingen die je over mij, Danny, 11 jaar, zou moeten weten:

2 Ik zit net op een NIEUWE SCHOOL
3 In mijn broodtrommel zit Stink, een ELFJE, verstopt...
Stink gaat ervoor zorgen dat iedereen op mijn nieuwe school me COOL gaat vinden, dus schakelt ze de hulp in van een TOVENAAR... Help!
De kleurrijke, grappige cover belooft al dat dit weer een hilarisch STINK avontuur gaat worden. Ik heb er zin in!
Omdat dit het tweede deel is (lees ook Stink tegen Danny) begint Danny het boek met een grappige strip waarin hij uitlegt hoe het allemaal begonnen is. Perfect dus om je geheugen weer even op te frissen of als je om welke vage reden dan ook deel één gemist hebt.
De humoristische schrijfstijl wordt afgewisseld met talloze grote en kleine illustraties. Een ideaal boek dus ook voor kinderen die eigenlijk niet eens van lezen houden en zeker niet van dikke pillen met veel letters ;o)
Door de korte hoofdstukken en de grappige, of beter gezegd hilarische, gebeurtenissen leest het boek lekker vlot en valt er heel wat te lachen. Sommige woorden zijn dik gedrukt en/of iets vergroot om bij het (voor)lezen extra nadruk op te leggen.
Stink tegen de tovenaar is een super leuk en grappig verhaal over vriendschappen en samenwerking. Voor kinderen vanaf ongeveer 7 jaar die graag lachen en houden van een beetje magie en toverkunsten.

Het verhaal:
Danny heeft van zijn zusje een elfendeurtje gekregen. Een doorgang naar Elfenland. In het vorige boek kwam S.Tink daar al doorheen om een goede daad te doen en nu is ze weer in Mensenland aangekomen. Ze moet weer een goede daad doen om aan gouden pingels te komen om een nieuwe toverstok te komen.
Maar het doen van een goede daad is erg lastig als je een ondeugend elfje bent.
Als ze dan een boze tovenaar naar Mensenland haalt om Danny te helpen, dan is het hek helemaal van de dam. En ook niet zo maar een boze tovenaar, maar eentje die gezocht wordt door het ELVD (elfenland veiligheids dienst)
Zal dit ooit nog goed komen?
Ik vind dit een heel grappig en vrolijk boek over vriendschap, magie en cool zijn. Dit gaat een hit worden op school, sowieso!

One of my son's favourite authors and series! The humour is spot on (for both my 9 year-old son and myself!) and he loves the illustrations as well. The story has a good pace so we kept wanting to keep going, find out what happened next. And it was lots of fun to revisit the characters from the first one. We can both highly recommend!

Review by my 7 year old son.
This story was sooooo good! I didn't want it to stop each night. It made me feel happy, and I found it easy to understand. The narrator in the audio book sounded nice and spoke clearly and slow enough for me to understand.

Awww this was incredibly wholesome but I just don’t get why it was so hard for Danny to say his line?!
