Kingdom of Embers and Ruin

Rate this book
A continent divided. Rival kingdoms on the brink of war. Fates intertwined. A love that will spark the flame of rebellion.

Maude has been running for most of her adult life; from her past and her future.
She is an isolated pit fighter who would rather hit first and ask questions later with no other goal than to stay alive in the slums of Logi, the capital city of the Kingdom of Flame. Life had been anything but simple for Maude but it was still hers. But when a charming stranger hops into the fighting pit with her and forces her to face the growing unrest in Logi, Maude can feel the fates swirling around her once more.

Herrick is a warrior from the Kingdom of Rivers who is on a mission to help the oppressed, low born citizens of Ahland.
A strict believer in the fate that the gods laid out for him, Herrick follows his gut to Logi when dreams of Valkyries and flames plague him. He knows the brutally stubborn woman he finds in the illegal fighting pits is his fate when he aggravates her enough for her to lose her slippery grip on control, revealing her secret. She would be his salvation in this civil war against King Helvig of Logi... and his damnation.

When the opportunity arrives for Herrick to persuade Maude to help him search for a rumored weapon that can take down the crooked king on the Throne of Wind and Flames, he quickly discovers that she is as frustrating as she is alluring to the warrior. Her past is a mystery that Herrick wants to unravel but Maude doesn’t give up bits of herself without a fight, even if she feels herself losing that fight every moment she spends in the aggravating warrior’s presence.

Tempers flare and desires burn in this enemies to lovers Viking inspired fantasy imbued with elemental magic and civil unrest. Follow Maude and Herrick as they reluctantly work together to free Ahland from crooked rulers and restrictions that have the gods restless enough to begin pulling on the strings of fate, altering their lives as they know it.

reread 5/2025 - still just as amazing as the first time!!!! ready for book 2

----------------

The way I absolutely devoured all 600+ pages of this!!!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC. This review reflects my honest thoughts and opinions.

This story hooked me right away and kept me hanging on the entire time. I tend to be a critical reviewer and I honestly cannot find anything I didn't like about this book. It's a little long for a first book of a series and the chapters are long but I DON'T CARE. I loved it. Let's dive in...

Maude, our FMC, has very 'unlikable' vibes which is my favorite type of FMC when done right and this author wrote her beautifully. We learn pretty early on why she is the way she is which helps create that empathy and connection with her. She's strong and fierce and I loved her.

Herrick, the man that you are. Our MMC is a walking green flag and I am obsessed. The way he never gave up on Maude and slowly chipped away at her walls was perfection. The ice to Maude's fire, the calm to her storm, this man was so freaking sweet....but also spicy.

The romance - there was definitely a little bit of an insta-attraction situation going which kicked off the most amazing tension, banter and angst. However, this is a slow burn so *that* moment doesn't happen til 70%. PERFECTION. I love Maude & Herrick together.

The world-building - I thought the world-building was so well done. The author created a complex world and magic system and delivered the information in a way that was digestible and easy to grasp. Certain things felt a bit repetitive at times but I actually think that helped me absorb the important information better. Whether or not this is true to Norse/viking mythology is not my business, I'm not a mythologist, I'm a reader who had a damn good time in this world.

The plot - so interesting, so engaging. I don't think I was bored once. I loved how things came together throughout the story as we continued to gain new information. I never felt confused, just satisfied as the puzzle pieces began to click. There's also some shocking plot twists especially towards the end. This does end on a cliffhanger!

The tropes - some of my favorites!
found family ✔
forbidden love ✔
"the quest" ✔
fate & prophecies ✔
black cat x golden retriever ✔

the microtropesssss - I'm not saying any because spoilers but so many good nuggets in here.

The last thing I will say is that this book gave me vibes from both Heir of Fire and A Court of Silver Flames by SJM. Two of my favorite books ever. But not once did I feel like this wasn't it's own unique story. It absolutely is.

Okay bye gonna go reread my 142 highlights 😅

I had the privilege to read the ARC of this amazing book!

A Viking/Norse Mythology inspired Fantasy with everything I could ever want… Morally gray FMC, Golden retriever MMC, LGBTQIA+ Representation, Multiple POVS, Rival kingdoms, Enemies to lovers, He falls first (hard!), Fates and Found family!

I absolutely fell in LOVE with this world and all the characters in it! I love a strong-willed FMC who’s a bit rough around the edges. Maude’s journey and growth throughout this story makes it hard not to root for her and love her! I like how her backstory was given in bits and pieces, but didn’t feel dragged out. There are so many secrets, twists and turns that will keep you engaged and guessing the entire time. Not to mention, the great banter and all the tension between Maude and Herrick (their nicknames for each other are everything!!) The build up and smut is nice and spicy. And I absolutely love the loyalty and friendship between them all!

And that ending?! So much new information with absolutely no answers, to set up more twists and plots for book 2! What a cliffhanger! The worst one I’ve read, and I mean it in the best possible way! I’m so excited and can’t wait for book 2!!!

Speechless. Obsessed is an understatement!!! So lucky to have read this early, everyone needs to run, not walk, to preorder KOEAR now!!!!

FMC is so raw and real, you’ll fall in love with Maude & resonate with her emotional journey instantly. A perfect Viking fantasy with the most WILD cliffhanger at the end… seriously, you’re not ready.

HOLY SHIT!!! I am struggling to find any other way to describe this book besides HOLY SHIT!!

This book is a Multi-POV mostly following FMC Maude who has been running from her past and her future at the same time. Her fate keeps her running from everyone she knows and loves in order to protect them… but when Herrick enters her life it throws Maude’s world on its side and she continues to fight against herself and her feelings. The rapport between these two… UGH the constant sexual tension while being at each other’s throats! The “just kiss already” energy is strong and the slow burn is painful in the best way!

This book has so much of what I love in a fantasy: badass females, sexy all-in love interest that supports and helps the FMC on her journey of self while also having his own morals, beliefs, and fate tested, a healthy balance of spice and plot, elemental magic, twists, turns, and a cliffhanger that leaves me wanted to next book NOW!! I suggest everyone RUN to preorder this book as it is so so so worth it!!

I was so excited to be picked as part of the ARC team for Kingdom of Embers and Ruin as the description had intrigued me and who doesn’t love some Viking stories!! When I say this book threw me for a loop at the end… like the last 30 pages were a literal mind fuck of everything you thought you knew throughout the entirety of the book. For me being surprised is a sign of a great book (but I will still sit here and be mad at myself for not figuring something out before it was revealed).

Whoa. Were do we begin? This book is action packed, twists, turns, surprises, spice, emotions, heart wretching... it had everything. For me, it has strong Throne of Glass vibes, and I loved every second! Gosh, I guess we'll start with a short blurb.

Kingdom of Embers and Ruin follows the story of Maude, a pit fighter in the Kingdom of Flame, who's been recruited by 2 brothers and their friends to help them find a mystical weapon that can kill the King of Flame, seeing that he's been removing anyone with vitki, or magic, from the kingdom so only the nobles have it. With fate playing a hand, can Maude, Herrick (one of the brothers) and their friends save the peoples of Flame and remove the King before its too late?

Okay, back to my review part. I LOVED Maude. She had black cat vibes for me. She's scared of getting close to anyone, has many secrets she's keeping to herself, but she's also caring, loyal, and wants the best for the people of Flame. Her internal struggle will you have rooting for her, sometimes wanting to yell at her, but then back to telling her to trust that gut.

Herrick, oh my main man. My golden retriever. He too has some secrets but the way he's drawn to Maude.... I was obsessed. She keeps trying to push him away and he's just as stubborn by holding steady. And the slow burn OMGosh! It was soooooo good. I sweated myself a few times lol.

I laughed in this book, I cried. I got angry, I was hopeful. All the emotions. And then that ending. Those last few pages has you on this roller coaster and I currently don't know if I'm up or down. Gah, when is book 2 coming out?

WOW. This is a debut novel? I loved this book so much. Nadya has created a world with a beautiful magic system, gods, and deep political intrigue. The plot had me drawn in right away. I never felt like it dragged in places, plus the TWISTS (yes, with an 's') were so good, and I didn't pick up on any of them. Nadya left some things to the imagination for her readers in some chapters and then answered the burning questions later. The main characters were not only believable but likable, even if I found a certain FMC very grating because she reminded me a lot of myself.

I highly recommend Kingdom of Embers and Ruin if you like:
☆ strong FMCs and MMCs
☆ unique & well-done magic system
☆ hidden identities
☆ forbidden love
☆ political intrigue
☆ slow burn
☆ found family
☆ he falls first

Maude and Herrick forever. 🫶🏼 (or else)

A huge thank you to Nadya for this e-ARC, and congratulations on your first book! ❤️‍🔥

Okay, so already completely sucked in and curious with the prologue. Lots of things caught my eye, ominous prophecies, amazing detail with descriptions really sets the mood and tone for the book. As with most fantasy books, it starts off slow, weaving in little secrets as she goes and when you think it’s heading in one direction, BOY was I wrong.

I quickly became attached to Maude and her fiery personality, I don’t know what it is about aggressive, ‘pretending not to care but caring too much’ women but they have my heart. I absolutely love the relationships she forges, albeit reluctantly, but you can really see her warmth and kindness under the hard exterior.

The book is filled with excitement and stress and emotion, especially the travelling scenes 👀 and finding out who Maude is!? My god. Be still my erratically beating heart.

Wait, I wrote that before the ending that ABSOLUTELY BLEW MY MIND. I am devastated and excited and sad and stressed and I need book two IMMEDIATELY.

10/10 would recommend, N.E Valla has a beautiful style of writing without being too over the top and flowery, her characters are relatable and believable. You really feel sucked into the story and its environment as she describes it in such detail. She may have broken my heart several times but I’m trusting her to put it back together in book two. Please. 😭

Received this as an ARC for an honest review.

This book is a Viking/Norse Mythology that took my breath away. Being a Norse pagan myself, Ms. Valla did an amazing job on capturing everything Norse. With that being said, if you're looking for an incredible romantic fantasy with
- morally grey FMC
- touch her and die MMC
- fated mates
- incredible world building
- political intrigue
- found family
- enemies to lovers
- LGBTQIA+ relationships
- slow burn
then this book is for you! The last two hundred or so pages had me glued. The plot twist at the end though...book 2 can't get here fast enough!!

Highly recommend: 1000/10 🔥🔥🔥🌟🌟🌟

“You shouldn’t be ashamed over the scar you bear; it shows you have fought for the life you live now.”

“I will drown the world before I allow anyone to take you from me.”

I was so excited to have received this book as an ARC! Our FMC, Maude, is as stubborn as they come and has the temperament of an angry bull. But that’s what we love about her. What you see is what you get… 😉

Herrick, is not afraid of a challenge and that’s exactly what he does. He challenges her. They work towards a common goal but he pushes her buttons every step of the way to really get through to her.

While this is a slow burn romance, what I actually really loved about the is book was the growth and friendships made. I love a good “found family” trope. Maude was soo closed off and had walls up as high as the heavens. There’s just something so satisfying about finding people who see through that, who love you for you and help you be the best version of yourself and that’s exactly what Maude finds.

I received this book as an ARC, and this is my honest opinion of it.

This book was a wild ride (in a good way). The FMC is strong, complex, and fierce. She sees so much growth in this book alone that I cannot wait to see where she ends up in future books.

There is something to like about every side character (even when they make some infuriating choices). I absolutely love the found family we get, and the way the characters complement each other

The plotting is excellent! The story moves at a good pace and allows for character development while taking us on an adventure that leads to some really high stakes situations and an ending where A LOT is revealed in a way that makes sense with the hints we were given throughout the book yet is still…shocking. My jaw is still on the floor.

The only reason I knocked a star off is because for me, the prose is a bit clunky, and I found some of the phrasing a bit redundant. That said, it was forgivable because the story was simply captivating.

This book is probably one of the best fantasy books I've read. The plot of this book was one I hadn't read before and it kept me intrigued with every chapter. I was pleasantly surprised with how addicted I was to the world-building and characters. Herrick and Maude have an enemies-to-lovers relationship and I enjoyed reading every interaction between them. This book had the perfect slow burn with specks of attraction scattered throughout. I liked how they balanced each other and were able to learn lessons. Herrick's flirtatious and playful nature worked well with Maude's closed-off personality. The plot twists in this book had me jaw-dropped, yet the way this book ended was criminal. I desperately need to know what happens next. The writing was easy to get into and kept me hooked throughout. This will be a world I think about and can't wait to re-enter.

Thank you to N.E. Valla for giving me a free copy in return for an honest review.

Note: I received an Advanced Reader Copy in return for an honest review of the book.

Such a great romantasy and hard to believe it’s a debut author. The story arc was great and the last 100 pages will take you on such a rollercoaster ride of emotions and plot twists. If you’re looking for a fantasy world with a strong female lead reminiscent of Aelin Galathynius (throne of glass) and a love story full of long looks and fate then you are going to want to dive into this series immediately.

✨Kingdom of Embers and Ruin✨

Okay. Are you looking for an EPIC fantasy romance? One with deep lore, Vikings, incredible found family, and a golden retriever MMC who is RELENTLESS? Then you NEED this book. The first in Valla’s series, you’re in for a TREAT.

We follow multiple POVs throughout this story, mostly from our pit fighting FMC, Maude. She has been in hiding for a decade until a stranger meets her in the pits with a deal that she feels might change the fate she’s been running from. When Maude agrees to go with Herrick and his crew, she struggles to keep her identity hidden. However, she’s not the only one keeping secrets. As they travel to find a weapon that might end the tyrant flame king, we experience much support, growth, and struggle. Healing is never linear nor is it easy. And it’s definitely not for this crew where fates feel despairing, their love is forbidden, and manipulation is afoot.

I thoroughly enjoyed our very broken and imperfect crew within these pages. Maude is a perfect reluctant hero who hides behind anger and revenge but has a heart yearning to give love and compassion. Our MMC is committed and fierce and funny. And our found family is so special. I just adored how they each cared for one another in their own special way. I can’t WAIT to see what happens next, ESPECIALLY after that ending and reveal!

Tropes you may find in KOEAR are elemental magic, underground fighting, he helps her with her anxiety, “breathe”, hidden identities, Vikings, golden retriever MMC, slooooow burn, elemental magic, found family, prophecies, deep lore and world building, political intrigue, medium spice (MF and FF), and a cliffhanger!

Kingdom of Embers and Ruin is out now! Go, my friends. Go!

Thank you to the author for an ARC copy! I am really grateful to have the opportunity to read this.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. It had a good amount of action, slow burn, drama, suspense, and twists. The ending was definitley a surprise. I enjoyed the magic system and the rune/fate aspect. The main characters, Maude and Herrick, were both enjoyable. I love the side characters - Liv, Gunnar, Hakon, Eydis, even Bryn. Although the spice was minimal, the buildup was good. I have a feeling we’re gonna get some goooood spice as this series progresses. There is also some LGBTQ+ rep and diverse characters, which is always great to see in fiction, especially fantasy.

I will say, I did struggle with some things I felt to be kind of inaccurate to a Norse inspired story. The names for example…specifically the fact that they had last names (Kolberg and Helvig) however, Liv was named with Minnasdottir. And King Helvig calls Maude “dottir” multiple times. I also was kind of confused that Norse inspired royalty was living in castles? I understand its fantasy and anything can happen but it just seemed weird to be a Viking inspired world but they lived in castles, had kings (called kings) and their names were a bit off. They also drank whiskey a couple times, which is also not culturally accurate. At one point the drugar had rapiers, which are French… Again, this is just personal preference because I’m not the one who created this world and it’s not up to me to decide what is historically consistent and what is in a fantasy world. But as I got more into the story, these things did kind of stand out to me as strange. Not bad by any means, and I feel like most people probably wouldn’t really mind, but it’s something I noted. I also am not a fan of super long chapters, and there were some chapters in here my kindle said would take at least 30 minutes to read so that’s kinda wild.

I definitley do recommend this story if you like Norse inspired fantasy, stabby FMC, unique magic, grumpy FMC x sorta sunshine MMC, found family, fate marks, and slow burn. I’m excited to see what comes next and will definitley be picking up the second book when it comes out. There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end which I absolutely need answers to asap.

What just happened? I’m speechless. I will write a full review but right now I need a minute to process. That ending. OMG. I need book 2 now. You need to order this book now.

Ok I'm ready. I'm obsessed. Where to start? This book gave me all the feels. I loved the writing, the story, and how it kept me interested. The main characters are well written, they have personality, they are complex, they have an interesting arc. I'm invested, I want to know what happens next. The supporting characters are also so well written. They have personality and have their own story, though it doesn't take away from the main story and it is interesting on it's own. I love their physical attraction, the banter, the slow burn was killing me in a good way, but when it happens... I was here for all of it. I was really connected to all the characters throughout the book . The cliffhanger ending OMG still not over it. While reading, I was afraid that it would abruptly end but that didn't happen, I liked the pace and the progression. So yeah, vikings, traumatic past, fighting to survive, touch him and die, prophecies, magic, one horse and all of it works amazingly well. Can't wait until the next book.

I was so excited to get the ARC. This is only my second ARC and it was amazing.

This book is AMAZING! It comes out September 17th, 2024, I highly suggest pre-ordering it now!!

In Kingdom of Embers and Ruin we follow a few characters. The first one being Maude, who is a mysterious pit-fighter on the run from her past. Turns out her past is not all she is running from. She is a strong morally grey character who is happier being alone than with others.

⁣We also follow Herrick, who is a warrior for the Kingdom of Rivers, he is guided by the gods and his intuition strongly. Herrick and Maudes paths cross and in order for them both to get what they want, they have to work together.

Book Review

I did not want to put this book down, and when I had to go to work, I was thinking of this book and wondering what was going to happen. I am someone who is really good at predicting books, and I only predicted one thing, and that was in the beginning. After that, I had no clue what was going to happen and therefore when it happened I was shocked! I legit gasped and was put through all the emotions. In the book we learn about Viking/ Norse mythology. The smut scenes were great! I love that there was more to them than just shmex.

I am an emotional wreck right now. I am sitting here collecting pieces of my broken little heart from the floor, not knowing how to exist after finishing Kingdom of Embers and Ruin, Book 1 in the Heirs of Fate series by N.E. Valla. KOEAR's release day is September 17th!

How will I live and breathe until Book 2 is in my arms? I don't know. What I do know is that KOEAR will ultimately be one of my favourite books of 2024, and rightly so. All the pain, sorrow, and angst were worth it because I got to ARC this masterpiece of a story.

I am still amazed by the fact that this is a debut novel. N. E. Valla has poured its heart and soul into this story, and it shows—the plot, the characters, the world-building; everything flows perfectly.

Maude's story just pulls you in from the first page, and then we are gifted with other POVs to help us understand everyone's thoughts and needs so much better. We understand why Maude is the way she is and why she puts out this hard exterior; we see Herrick's feelings developing and blossoming, even while he struggles with his innate sense of duty and morale; we dig deep into Bryn's (Maude's sister) thought process and emotional turmoil, strung between the feelings of love, loss, and betrayal.

We cheer, we rage, we cry, and that is ok, as it shows just how well-written KOEAR is and how much the story pulls you in. We dive deep into the story of two rival kingdoms, magic struggling, gods intervening, fates pulling our heroes, and then our heroes trying to decide whether they will follow their chosen path or forge their own. We love Maude, Herrick, and their chosen family; we feel deeply for them and see all their intricacies and their perfect imperfections. We see Maude's walls slowly crumbling down. We cry for their losses; we rage at the betrayals; we are stunned by all the plot twists and turns. And finally, we are left with the sense of utter joy of being able to experience all that while reading KOEAR.

I am honoured to be a member of the ARC team, and I can only hope to have this opportunity again!

KOEAR will gift you
- a Viking-inspired society
- deep world-building & lore
- rival kingdoms
- morally grey characters
- perfectly imperfect found family
- forbidden love
- he falls first
- secrets, revelations & twists
- fate & prophecies
and a story that will emotionally wreck you for all the right reasons!

Had the honor of being selected as an ARC reader for this book, and it has been a pleasure!

This story follows a female protagonist, Maude, on the continent of Ahland. Plagued with a dark past, a rough and stubborn Maude is set off on an adventure with newly formed friendship and growing love interest, Herrick. The group shares a common goal of dethroning the ruthless ruler of the Kingdom of Flame in order to free the people from oppression. This world is full of segregated elemental powers by kingdoms, hardship, friendship, adventure, and love. Without giving any spoilers, the ending is left on a cliff hanger and does not disappoint!

I enjoyed reading this story. I was exciting, filled with every emotion I can think of. I found myself cheering for Herrick, the love interest. I particularly like how each character grows throughout the story.

I gave this book four stars because of the technically writing. It feels like it needs a good edit. Run on sentences, grammar and structure. Some content was overly written, and the story was just a little slow in the first part of the book. Though it does pick up on the second half. It is written in third person, but that doesn't take away from the story. In the first part of the book I personally found the dialogue to feel a little scripted.

Overall, I do recommend this book on your TBR. The author has a wonderful imagination that really brought me into the space, the story has strong depth and emotion that the reader will enjoy. Congrats to the author on a great first book!

To say I devoured this book, would be an understatement! Things that were phenomenal; character depth, world building, magic system, pacing (it was a thick book, but didn’t feel like it), plot twists! I felt the author did a wonderful job mixing Norse mythology with the elemental magic system as well. The romance was exception, AND managed to not overtake the plot. The angst and slowwwwww burn that sparked at just the right moments…🫠

AND THAT ENDING….well, I always did love a good cliffhanger.

**I was graciously given an ARC of this book in exchange for a voluntary, honest review.**

Just WOW!!!
I came, I was sucked in, and I was devastated. All in the name of a beautifully written story.

"Kingdom of Embers and Ruins" is an enthralling fantasy novel that weaves a tale of resilience, camaraderie, and self-discovery. At the heart of this epic narrative is Maude, the fiercely broken yet undeniably relatable protagonist whose journey from the depths of despair to newfound strength is both captivating and inspiring.

Maude's character is intricately crafted, portraying a woman marked by her past but not defined by it. Her imperfections and vulnerabilities make her an authentic and compelling figure, one that any reader can easily connect with. Her struggles are palpable, her pain and resilience resonate deeply, and her transformation is a testament to the power of inner strength and external support.

The narrative truly shines through the dynamics between Maude and her newfound group of friends who gradually become her chosen family. Each character in this ensemble is richly developed, adding depth and dimension to the story. Their interactions, whether filled with light-hearted banter or profound moments of solidarity, create a vibrant tapestry of relationships that enrich the plot.

Central to this group is Herrick, the man who gradually emerges as Maude’s love interest. The chemistry between Maude and Herrick is electric, their banter sharp and filled with a tantalizing sexual tension that keeps readers eagerly turning pages. Their relationship evolves naturally and believably, moving from mutual respect and understanding to a deeper, more intimate connection. The progression of their romance is neither rushed nor forced, allowing readers to savor each moment of their developing bond.

As Maude and her companions work towards their common goal, the narrative expertly balances action with character development. The stakes are high, the challenges formidable, yet it is through these trials that Maude's latent strength is revealed. Her journey is not one of sudden transformation but of gradual growth, supported by the unwavering belief and support of her friends.

Adding to the novel's allure is its breathtaking conclusion, which delivers a cliffhanger that leaves readers on the edge of their seats. The unresolved tensions and looming threats set the stage for an eagerly anticipated sequel, ensuring that fans will be nervously awaiting the next installment. WOW. Five stars all day, and I knew it from the first 100 pages it was going to be so. Just wow, What an absolutely captivating debut novel. I’m going to recommend it to absolutely everyone and anyone. I fell so much in love with this whole world and the characters. It’s got the Vikings, the fantasy aspect with a magical world, the slow burn romance, the found family. It’s got everything we love in a book. I will say that 600+ pages never felt more like 200 in my life. I FLEW through this one. The plot is amazing, the ending had me shook to my very core and it’s set up SO well for the next installment.

This book boasts a multi-POV. Maude, is our very morally gray, strong-willed FMC in this one. We learn about her life, and how she ended up where she is from running from her past and her fate given to her when she was young. She is a very damaged character but I felt so connected to her from the very start. She was hard not to love- because we all have traumas that we need to overcome.
Herrick, the cinnamon roll but will burn the world down for her, MMC. He enters the chat and throws everything Maude has ever known totally off. The slow burn between these two is REAL. The banter between them was my absolute favorite.

I don’t want to say to much for fear of spoiling but know it’s 100% worth the read. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up on a trending list when it releases because it’s that GOOD. 🤩🤩

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️5 STARS!! *ARC reader*

Do you like Vikings? Slow Burns? Found family? Strong FMC? Emotionally invested MMC? Then this book is for you!!

It’s so refreshing to read about a strong, tall, curvy female lead with combat experience! KOEAR was a breath of fresh air when it came to the hard headed female lead, Maude. I loved witnessing her hard exterior begin to give way with her new friends and the growth she had along her quest. Even if she was trying to escape her fate the entire time.

Herrick, the MMC, in the book is tall, strong, handsome, and has a fierce loyalty to those he loves. Unlike Maude, he chooses to accept and follow the path that his fate has dealt him. Which makes the slow burn between the two characters that much better! They fight a lot (talk about tension building), while also balancing each other out as they both go through different experiences and emotions.

The descriptions are so good! You can picture each city and character clearly! This book is packed with adventure, anticipation, friendship, loyalty, raw emotions, unexpected twists, violence, and fantasy. It had everything that I would hope to find in a 5 star ⭐️ fantasy!

Honestly, I was left speechless at the end of the book! My mind was reeling that I had reached the end because I want more!! Naturally, I can’t wait to read the second one!!

~ Norse/Viking Mythology

4.5/5 Stars.

✨ My Thoughts ✨
Oh boy... This book was so fun. The angst and tension was so so good. The slowburn of everything was absolutely delicious. The banter was my absolute favorite. I love getting multiple POVs. Maude is a badass. She has gone through a lot. I loved reading her story. Herrick is an absolute dream. I love how determined he was. But he also understood what Maude wanted. The chemistry between them is so so good. I couldn't get enough. I love the elemental magic too. I love all of the Norse/Viking Mythology. My heart was beating so fast the last few chapters. I couldn't believe the last line in the book. I truly didn't see the ending coming. I am still in shock and I finished this book a few days ago. I can't recommend this one enough. If you want a good elemental magic with Norse/Viking Mythology then this is a must.

Kingdom of Embers and Ruin is book one in a new series. This book is recommended for 18+. As always please check TW before reading. This book is available now!

✨ I want to thank N.E. Valla for an e-arc of this book. These are my own true thoughts. ✨

Holy shit! 🤯🤯

I’ve been slow to read this as I’ve been struck down with migraines for the past two weeks, so it’s made reading hard. Finally today has been good and I was able to dive back in.

I absolutely loved the slow burn, it was sloooowwww, the type of slow that gets you all riled up and begging for them to finally just get to that *f*#k it moment. When that moment finally hits, it’s like an explosion with a sigh of satisfaction. 😉😍
There’s so many twists and turns I was left with my mouth hanging open, I’m sure I looked the sight. 😆
The emotional overload from the book will have me reeling for days. Ahhhhh I was ready to throw my kindle, I had to put it down and I was like, “no, the author did not just do that, did she?” I took a few deep breaths, went and complained to my husband, and then went back to finish the book. Here I thought there wouldn’t be anything else to shock me, but I was wrong. That ending has left me like…🤯👏😫😭🫣🤔😮‍💨🤐😁🥰

In simple terms, it’s an amazing story, I loved every minute of it and I definitely recommend it! 🤩

Thank you so much for the opportunity to be an ARC reader of this!

I read this TWICE before I sat down to write a review because it was SO good. Seriously, this has moved A Court of Thorns and Roses to #2 on my favorites list, and that has been #1 for a long time. I am blown away by the fact that this is their debut novel.

This book is a Viking fantasy filled with so many loved tropes: multiple POV, grumpy FMC golden retriever MMC, rival kingdoms, elemental magic, forbidden love, LGBTQIA rep, found family.

The main character Maude is a bad ass warrior who doesn’t need anyone to save her. She just needs to find balance in her life, and she meets a group of new friends who help her do just that.

The author did an amazing job with the world building and balancing the spice (it’s 🔥 HOT 🔥) and plot. Just when you think you might’ve figured out what’s going on, new info or a plot twist is revealed ! I adore each and every one of the characters in the main group for different reasons. There is never a dull moment in this book. && that ending was mind blowing. That cliffhanger has me begging the author for book 2 ASAP !!

Favorite quote:
“I have thought of a thousand ways to make you scream my name,”
“And another thousand ways to punish you for your mouth.”

You are going to want to add this to your TBR right now and I hope you fall in love with this story as much as I did because I am obsessed.

Wow.
I absolutely devoured this book.
Maude, our mfc, is fierce and a bit prickly in the beginning but I still fell in love with her quickly. While she has many reasons to act the way she does, she is still open to growing and taking advice which really makes her a lovable character. She’s the perfect balance to Herrick, and their banter and tension is fantastic. And the forbidden romance aspect makes for a slow burn that has the perfect amount of spice.

The world building is very descriptive and in depth - I truly could picture everything in my head. Despite this being a Norse mythology inspired series, I didn’t feel you needed a lot of prior knowledge on Viking history to understand it. There was a nice blend of Viking elements and traditional fantasy setting that is easy for readers to follow but is still very unique.

And that ending! I feel like I’m still trying to process everything that happens at the end of this book - but in the best way possible. So many twists and secrets are revealed and it’s clear this is just the beginning of an epic story. I’m anxiously awaiting book 2 in the series!

Tropes:
Morally gray mfc
Rival Kingdoms
Fate/ prophecy
One horse/ one bed
Reluctant partners
Elemental magic
Found family
Norse/ Viking mythology

I’d like to thank N.E. Valla for my ARC copy - I was so excited about this story and it surpassed all my expectations.

This book is amazing, I love it so much! I love when fantasy books have references to mythology or are inspired by it and this has the inspiration of Norse mythology. The story of Maude was amazing, we can read about her growth through all the book and how the other characters helped her to in that character growth. I love the group of friends that was formed and the couples too. The tension between Maude and Herrick was intense to read but I enjoyed reading about them.

This book also has an interesting political systems and rules. I can’t wait to read the next one and see more things at play!

Highly recommend this book for any fantasy lover!

I was so very fortunate to receive an ARC of this book to read and OH. MY. GOODNESS!!! It took me a little bit to get into the book. It’s a nice long book. It had great world building, interesting characters, obstacles along the way and that ending!!! The FMC, Maude, is so badass. She does come with a whole lot of trauma and crazy trust issues. The trust issues got a little annoying for me but it’s not like you just get over those in a snap of your fingers. They stick around, popping up when you don’t want it to and it’s a slow healing process. I think that was very well depicted through Maude’s progression through the book. She still has a ways to go but I feel for her character. Chapter 36 really destroyed me.

Maude and Herrick’s relationship was a slow burn that even the other characters in the book were obsessed with haha. Their physical attraction doesn’t over power the fact that they compliment each other personality wise as well. I like how the author built upon their relationship but also really made Maude the protector. The “touch him and die” one of the relationship without emasculating Herrick at all.

This story was a wonderful mix of Norse mythology and Viking culture. The elemental magic being separated by kingdom and through a 200 year old treaty caused plenty of issues through the journey and within relationships in the group. The politic strife was ok. It’s really just them trying to dethrone a tyrant ruler who is a monster to his daughters, people and is lustful for more power. I’m not going to put in any spoilers about the ending. I knew there was going to be something that happened but not that! Not what actually went down. I really need the second book because it’s going to be one wild ride

Tropes:

🔥Reluctant partners
🔥Rival kingdoms
🔥Elemental magic
🔥One bed/one horse
🔥Found family
🔥Grumpy/sunshine
🔥Fate/prophecy
🔥Morally grey FMC

4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kingdom of Ember and Ruin pulled me right away with intrigue and wonder. Great story, found family, enemies to lovers with a common goal, one horse, playful/witty banter!

The FMC is hard to love and hard to understand at first but is dealing with legitimate struggles and past abuse (not on page).

🌶️🌶️some spice, slow burn, representation of different relationships
