The spacecraft design is like nothing I’ve ever read and I loved the juxtaposition of life on the different ships. This book wrestles with societal class dynamics, environmental and mechanical disasters, and what it means to be a human when our electronics and world literally fall apart around us. There were also some glimmers of romance that I loved. I was hooked on the ending and loved the details in the epilogue. Overall a story with a very realistic but hopeful portrayal of intergenerational space travel!

This was a very entertaining read. I really enjoyed the world building, the characters and their relationships to each other - and how those relationships evolved - and the vision for how four 500-year old societies that branched from a common trunk might evolve in different ways. Gray's author bio describes herself as writing "hopeful" sci-fi, which I think is a really apt description. The Dementia focuses on a disaster occurring on four different generation ships that are halfway through their thousand year journey from earth. The idea of generation ships (spaceships designed for multiple generations to live and die, with the hope of getting their ancestors to a distant planet) has always been kind of disturbing to me. It is unsettling to think about being one of those in-between generations that knows they will spend their entire life within the confines of a ship (even one as large as the ships in The Dementia), just for the hope of some future they will never see. There is a nobleness needed to go through with that, and if this book had been darker or more cynical, it could have made the read even more disturbing, especially once the ships begin malfunctioning so far out in the vast emptiness of space. However, the characters are written in such a way that there is much goodness in them, and while that feeling of unease is there, it does not over consume. I wonder, in fact, if the writing could even be described as "cozy", although there are definitely portions of the book that are fairly stressful.

The prose is written in a clear, concise style, while still being witty and clever. It really allows the characters and themes to come through. Once the disasters occur and the characters get to solving them, there is a puzzle solving element as the reader feels they are along for the ride in terms of trying to problem solve and think about what the characters will do next. In particular, I liked the class tension on the ship, as this added a nice obstacle to overcome. I also liked how some of the backstory/history of leaving earth was flushed out as the story went on. I have seen the book compared to Apollo 13 and The Martian, which I think is fairly accurate. I would definitely recommend this if you like either of those!

The majority of the citizens on the generation ships Hope, Destiny, Grace and Peace only interact with people in their own city; possibly in their ship's mirror city on the other side of the gravity well. Only the governors, along with staff in charge of ship maintenance and research, truly need to communicate with the other three ships. Which becomes somewhat of a problem when Hope stops responding and all ships suffer catastrophic damage. They have to work together to avoid a far too early end to their travels. In their way? Failing technology and panicking people.

What a ride! It started out tense and then built and built toward a very pulse-pounding ending, but with enough rest points along the way to keep the story flowing. I really like the characters, Jacks being my favorite, and the differences in the political situations on the ships created a lot of interesting tensions and complications. Looking forward to the sequel!

My favorite moments are spoilers, so I'm listing them under a spoiler tag:
When Jacks makes it to the secondary city's communication room after all those set-backs, when we find out the reason for the book's title being catastrophic computer failure which is solved by knitting and writing, and when Hope, still out of communication, manages to compensate for Grace's failing engines. That final one was such a stand up an cheer moment!

I loved this book, particularly the divergent responses between the different asteroid topside cities based on the individual political structures, the quality of leadership, and the frustration of the populace. Although the engineering challenges were the glue holding the ships together, from the all-out mutiny on Peace to the less chaotic but no less serious issues faced on Destiny and Grace and the unknown ones on Hope, I was gripped by socio-political challenges, interpersonal frustrations, and new connections.

It's definitely a timely reminder of what we can do when we band together and what happens when we fall apart.

Like with all books with multiple PoVs, there were those I enjoyed more (Jacks and Antony), those I felt neutral about (Amita and Nayeli), and those I liked less (Tevita and Mario.) The plot was very tense and exciting, and I cheered when Hope unexpectedly saved the maneuver. The worldbuilding was intriguing as well, though there were a few details that made me roll my eyes (like nobody listening to the emergency frequencies apparently? or even thinking to check them when something unexpected occurs??, or the knitting - not that I'm an expert but it seems very likely to me that the programs they were talking about would be way too complex for binary encoding in the short timeframe they had..)

I really enjoyed this book, the multiple POVs kept the book pacing fast and let you see from different perspectives what was happening on the ships. In the best possible way this was a stressful read. The characters were really well written and felt like they were real people making actual decisions based on their knowledge and background. I wholeheartedly recommend this if you enjoy non-military SciFi and people overcoming overwhelming odds.

𝚃𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑𝚝𝚜: I felt this story was utterly fantastic!

There is something incredibly provocative about hurtling through space over generations.

First off, the characters— of whom there is an entire cast. They are amazing! And I felt I came to care for each one dearly. I adored how diverse they were too! Each character felt unique. Masterfully done. ✅

The societal & physical structures of each ship were also absolutely fascinating! I shan’t give anymore away than that. 😉

This is one of those stories that keeps you up at night wondering how you’d conduct yourself if you were in it. How would you handle being in a ship, and knowing you’d never touch a planet for the whole of your life? What would you do in this crisis?

The author also does a wonderful job showing the many levels of humanity in this novel, as many if not more levels as there are on the ships. The struggles are real!

The narration style also had me giggling, sometimes. Which I love. 💗

This just all around a grand space adventure, with depth! ☄️
