This volume of the Book of Heartslabyul is a lot more serious than the other two, even though it still has a lot of fun and silly moments!

I really enjoyed reading this third installment, mainly because we get to know a lot more about Riddle and the reasons why he acts in such a strict manner and also about his powers (also the fact his magic is out of control due to overblot?? such an interesting concept and super well applied, considering the emotional turmoil Riddle was going through in these scenes!).
However, my favorite part of this volume is actually what ends up making Riddle lose control of his power... and that's Ace! I think he really shined in this book and I loved seeing him stand up for himself, but also for the other members of their dorm! Although I love Riddle, he really did need to hear what Ace told him, in my opinion hehehe

The last chapter is quite intense and ends in a huge cliffhanger, so I can't wait to read what happens next! This series is just so fun to read, I really can't wait to pick up the last volume of the Book of Heartslabyul!!

P.S. I absolutely adore Chenya 🥹🩷💜

I think my heart has calmed down enough to write this review because WOW!! This was intense and heart-racing!!! Even with knowing the game and having played it, this whole volume hit differently (in a good way though!) where everything seems darker, more vivid, and a lot more emotional!

My biggest takeaway when it comes to characters is that Ace is amazing. I had a love-hate relationship with him in the game because of how much shade he throws around. LOL! HE still does that in this volume, but I realized it may not necessarily be shade, just outright him saying his feelings with no shame or bashfulness. He hits his own breaking point where he just snaps and calls Riddle a baby straight to his face. Even when Riddle demands he apologizes, he calls out Riddle saying no and if he would throw a tantrum simply because he didn't get his way. I felt a massive respect for him in this volume compared to before because I certainly wouldn't have the guts to confront Riddle in any shape or form! (Also the way he called out Trey was pretty amazing too!)

When it comes to the story and the art, Riddle stole the show!! WOW!! Seeing the progression leading up to his overblot and then the aftermath was incredible! I was deeply impressed and read the last quarter of this volume wayyyyy too fast, but I just could not stop turning pages to see how this story would be in manga form! It was beyond what I expected!!

I also liked the added part with Yu concerning how real swordsmen from his world dress! (Also the banner! LOL!!) Very nice addition and continue to deeply like his character!

Overall, this is the best volume yet! It is VERY intense and action-packed and captures the story in a darker and grittier way with even a slightly horror-like vibe compared to previous volumes.

Continues to be an extremely well done series and will try not to hold my breath for too long in waiting for the final volume!

I'm too tired to really form a coherent review, but I definitely like what they're doing with the angry twink. Wish it was more shocking, but I guess that's my own fault for seeing this from a mile away.

The story continues! Yu and friends have upset Housewarden Riddle and it is not pretty . . .

All the students feel Riddle is just a Tyrant. He forces ridiculous rules on the student body that the Queen of Hearts laid down. Ace challenges Riddle's personality and a mental crack appears. . .

Artemiy! My new favourite character that entered and the cutest Chesire Cat ever!!

This series is becoming a highlight in my life. It is getting more serious but it still has its humour.

The ending😮 of this volume made my toes curl with excitement to immediately continue to vol 4.

UGH. I cannot say enough about how much I enjoy this manga adaptation. I adore the way this is being handled and the art remains absolutely top notch. Can't recommend this enough to the curious~. Please please at least give this manga a shot if you're still on the fence about trying the game itself!

My husband bought me the first two volumes of Twisted Wonderland for Christmas, and the second volume was actually the first book I read this year. So, because it was a gift from someone I love, they sort of hold a special place in my heart. Especially because he picked them out without any feedback from me.

Here's the thing. I thought this series was drawn by Yana Toboso, and being such a big fan of Black Butler, I was super excited to check this series out. However, I noticed on this volume that Toboso is credited as the concept artist, while the illustrations in this book are credited to Sumire Kowono. They have very similar styles, but Toboso apparently only worked on the concept art for the game or the manga, or both.

My theory is that if you have played the game, this series will make a lot more sense, and you will most likely enjoy it more than someone who hasn't. The art is fantastic, but there are just some things about the plot that you don't get in the manga, but are probably explained in the game. I have a feeling reading this manga is a lot like seeing the movie Five Nights at Freddy's. I've seen a little bit of the game play, but I don't know much about the story. Apparently, the movie pretty much assumes that you have played all of the games and know all the lore before you see it. I listened to a podcast where people who had never played the game saw the film, and they had no idea what was happening half the time, and all of the eater eggs were completely lost on them. And I don't have a problem with content like that. You just have to be willing to say that the game and the manga (or movie) go hand in hand, and it's not going to be the same experience for someone who isn't familiar with both.

Perhaps I will give the game a shot. I don't know yet. And I don't think this is a bad story. I was really drawn in to the events in this volume. I just think it would be a much more complete experience if I actually played the game.

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC of this volume in exchange for an honest review. (May contain spoilers.)

Twisted Wonderland is a manga inspired by a mobile game. Like Alice in the Country of Hearts, Twisted Wonderland very much plays up the Alice in Wonderland aesthetic: in this case, it draws upon the Disney animated movie adaptation, while also referencing other popular Disney films. Much like retellings of classics and beloved fairy tales, Twisted Wonderland is a retelling of classic Disney: Japanese high school student and kendo club member Yuken Enma is suddenly transported into another world. He finds himself in an elite magic school whose dorms are themed after various Disney villains, such as Ursula (The Little Mermaid), Mustafa (The Lion King), and the Queen of Hearts (Alice in Wonderland).

In this volume, Yuken's friends, Ace and Deuce, have been banished from their dorm by their house-warden, Riddle, who is a devout rule-follower--Riddle has vowed to uphold the 810 rules set by the Queen of Hearts, no matter how nonsensical. Ace's attempts to apologize and undo his banishment fail, and conflict escalates dramatically. While this plot has continued off and on since volume one, it's nice to see some more world-building and character development, especially on Riddle's part, as well as a deeper glimpse into his relationship with Trey, his friend/lackey. It was also fun to meet this iteration of the Cheshire Cat, who briefly appears.

Overall, this is a story meant for pure entertainment, especially for manga, game, and/or Disney fans. Followers of Black Butler (manga or anime) will also recognize Yana Toboso's signature art style. In short, not earth-shattering, but fun.

I'll say it over and over again: the artstyle of this series is insane. I'm constantly staring at all the panels in awe, especially Riddle going insane!! Sumire Kowono carries emotions so well in her drawings, it fits Riddle a lot.

Plot wise I must say I preferred them being silly rascals, the whole school setting with all the unique and complex characters has great protential for entertaining slice of life. Riddle and Ace both need to relax a little, heavy on Riddle. I guess I get that the rules are important to him and I see how his past lead him to his overblot, but a few simple breathing exercises could've prevented that... Ace asked for it though. He's a bit impudent and he surely is aware of it. I love him, but who does he think he is duelling Riddle even though his skill is so untrained in comparison?? Not sure if he's brave or unhinged.

I enjoyed reading all of it though, even if Riddle's overblot is a bit of a stretch. I expect great things for the following volumes!

Oh and Crowley was growing on me for a second as he was talking to Ace and everybody else in the library. Also shielding the students when Riddle went mad and all. It's just questionable that he stood there and didn't lift a finger to stop Riddle from overblotting. Like if you were a little LESS relaxed maybe this woudn't have happened. I see the homeostasis of chill is what is discussed in this series!

VIZ Media provided an early galley for review.

Last year, I was able to review volume 1and volume 2 of this series. I am pleased to be able to continue to see how this story evolves.

Growing up, Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass books were always favorites of mine. And, of course, I was a big fan of the 1951 Disney animated adaptation. I am pleased to see those elements of the latter that influenced the story and artwork in the series as a whole and this volume in particular.

This volume covers the next five chapters in this first book (chapters 12 to 16). In them, the reader sees the unraveling of Riddle and how everyone has to respond to the rapid spiraling decline. We get insight into the character as well as some important world-building details that I think will become a bigger issue as this manga continues to unfold.

It is also interesting to see the changes in the characters Trey and Cater (featured on this volume's cover) as they come to realize how tyrannical Riddle's rule of the Heartslabyul Dorm has become. We're also briefly introduced to a new character Chenya who is very inspired by the Cheshire Cat character from the original source material. I expect we'll see more of him in the future.

If you're a Disney fan and enjoy manga, this one is must-read.

Cap. 12-16
Riusciranno a salvare Riddle?

I read many Disney books but very few graphic novels/manga, but this series is a favorite!

Disney's Twisted Wonderland, Vol. 3 continues to deliver an enchanting mix of magic, friendship, and mischief that fans have come to love. In this installment, we see Yu embroiled in yet another adventure, this time at one of Heartslabyul Dorm's infamous unbirthday parties.

The storyline revolves around Yu's earnest attempts to help his friend Ace, inevitably leading to unforeseen consequences. The dynamic between the characters remains engaging, with each bringing their quirks and personalities to the table. The addition of Riddle, the house-warden, as a formidable antagonist, adds an exciting layer of tension to the narrative.

What sets this volume apart is its exploration of Heartslabyul Dorm's traditions and customs, mainly through the lens of the unbirthday party. The world-building continues to impress, with vivid descriptions and imaginative details that draw readers deeper into the magical realm of Twisted Wonderland.

Read this whole 4 Volume manga series and I was not expecting this simple and fun Disney spin off series to go this hard - but I should have known better considering it's from Yana Toboso. Come here for the fun spin-off of Disney characters and ideas but stay for the unique school and magic setup, world building and interesting characters. Riddle will make you fall for him and I am completely hooked to the story of this little spoiled brat. Of course it's not that simple. Man, I really need this animated.

YES!!! This was fantastic!! The illustrations just brought the scenes to life. The way they showed more emotions in all the characters actions and facial features was chefs kiss !! Honestly I’d forgotten how good this first story was and it was wonderful to be returned to it !! This has certainly made me appreciate Trey way more .. cause dare I say he actually has a personality and isn’t simply there !!!

Ace not letting Riddle have his temper tantrum was so freaking enjoyable to see. I love Ace’s morals and that he has the guts to stand up for himself and call out other people’s behaviours. He’s a really strong character and he went up in my opinion after this book. Don’t get me wrong I love Riddle but he really needed this reality check. So did Trey. I can’t wait to read the next novel and see our red headed tyrant calm the hell down lol

I don't know why this book wasn't combined with the 4th book, because it was so much smaller than the other two LOL and it could have just been put together and ended in three books instead of 4, but clearly they wanted...4 books. Unnecessary, but overall this book was good other than that complaint. If you like the mobile game, you'll like this series. But even if you don't, but you like Disney movies, you'll probably still like these books.
