As a goth person, I can feel some empathy with this book. I don’t consider it a goth bible for babybats. As some people mentioned, it lacked more information. Currently, the goth subculture is an umbrella with many styles, resistances, and histories, and there’s much more that could be explored on this topic. I absolutely disagree with some celebrities she mentions as goth icons, for example Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, and Arca. It makes me wonder what Tish Weinstock’s definition of “goth” is within musical art.
Even so, I enjoyed learning a bit about the designers and their appreciation for gothic art, as well as discovering some books to add to my collection. I think the ideas she presents about how to dress are good, especially if we want to start with something like soft goth.
In a future edition, I would hope for a more detailed elaboration focused on the subcultures and their characteristics, for example Trad Goth, Romantic, Edwardian, Victorian, Cyber, and Lolita, etc.
