Even the greatest assassin in the galaxy had to start somewhere. Snatched up and whisked away light years from home, young Bawb finds himself thrust into an entirely new life. One filled with brutal training, sweat, and pain, where injury and even death are a terrifying reality. With abilities he didn’t know he possessed manifesting under the extreme pressure, one thing was certain. Like it or not, this was his destiny. It would be a difficult path, but if he survived the myriad challenges ahead, he might become a full-fledged member of the Order. Possibly something more. But when the curious boy stumbles headfirst into a mystery the likes of which even the great Masters of the Order had failed to solve, it becomes abundantly clear something more was lurking in these walls than just physical and mental challenges. Something that could change his fate forever. Author Note: This series follows the origins and adventures of Bawb, a fan favorite character from the Bad Luck Charlie books (the Dragon Mage series). This series contains no spoilers for the Charlie series. You do not need to have read the Charlie books first. Also related to this series is the Space Assassins series, which takes place directly before these books. The Space Assassins series is closely related and many characters from that series also appear in these books. Note that there are some spoilers if you have not read the Space Assassins series first, but none that I feel will ruin that series.
Scott Baron is an American author with a penchant for oddball stories with O. Henry-esque twists.
Born in Hollywood, Baron credits growing up in Los Angeles with skewing his humor towards the offbeat and absurd. He studied abroad in Italy during his college years, returning to Los Angeles to work in the film industry as an on-set medic. In addition to writing shorts and novels, Baron is also a screenwriter of both feature and television scripts.
Well that was definitely a different and wild read! The world was utterly immersive and a thrilling ride for sure. The writing style was engaging and easy to read. With colourful settings, fantastic world building, lively characters, and an immersive plot. I haven’t felt so engaged in a read in a while. And this being a genre I usually have a hard time getting into at that. Bawb’s story is definitely one I will continue if I have a chance.
Content: Romance: None. Language: there were a few instances of h*ll and once b**ch. Violence: the main character(s) are in training to be elite assassins. Therefore the training they are involved in is at times violent or bloody but never in excessive detail. Other: As above mentioned the trainees go through some traumatic experiences. There’s also instance of a character being in the nude but with no explicit detail.

Assassin's Academy: The Book of Bawb 1, was a joy to read. While reading Book of Bawb 1, I felt that many fans of Enders Game would enjoy this book. The characters were well described. The reader was able to immerse themselves into the challenges that Bawb had to face both mentally and physically as he honed his own abilities for his own survival. I could not wait to get back to this book to read the next chapters. If I could have given this book a 4.5 instead of a 4, I would have. Although the ending had adventure and danger, I felt the escape from the pirate ship and the Rock planet could have been more intense, with the feeling of Bawb being involved in more severe danger. Then, I would have rated this book a solid 5.

I loved this book, so much that I read the bulk of it in two days, even with my busy schedule. This series is a sequel to the Space Assassins series, which was my introduction to this author. I remember being surprised by the book, partly because I had never heard of Space Opera, but also because the first book was a novella, and novellas are hit or miss for me.
My initial impressions of that series was that it felt like watching my husband play his RPG games (so maybe this falls in the category of litRPG?), except there isn't a leveling up system, per se. I'm currently reading something that is most definitely litRPG, many aspects of a true RPG game are absent from this series and the previous one. Still, I was intrigued by the main character Hozark, and the more I read, the more I loved the series. By the third book of that 5-book series, I was completely hooked and I am planning on rereading the series at some point in the near future. I will also say that when I closed the last book, I was sad to say goodbye to Hozark and company. So I was delighted when I heard he was starting a new series with Bawb, who is mentioned in an epilogue in book 5.
I'm going to stay away from spoilers as much as possible, because I think it's worth you checking out the previous series. That said, you CAN read this book (and probably the rest of the series) without having read Space Assassins. Just know that there are things mentioned in this book that will act as spoilers for Space Assassins, so if you have any intention of reading that series, you may want to start there.
On to the good stuff. The main character is Bawb and I really like him. This story begins when he is an orphaned child and is eventually picked up and brought to the academy where Hozark grew up and developed. This is kind of Harry Potterish in that he is an orphan who didn't know he had any special abilities, he's brought to a school, Hozark is kind of like Dumbledore, and he even has an "enemy" that's like Draco Malfoy. He has a ton of potential, but he's thought of as "too soft" by the masters, but we have to remember that this is an academy for assassins, so that makes sense. Still his heart is both a weakness and a strength and it's at this academy that he has to learn how to find the right balance.
I love that Hozark and his crew all show up at various times, yet this is a book that is focused on Bawb. He is very much a likable character, and the friends he surrounds himself with are also very interesting. His classmate "enemy" has the potential to go either way, so it will be interesting to see how that storyline develops.
The story does open in the future (present) when Bawb is in the middle of a mission and then he reflects back on these years. They never return to the present, so I'm wondering if the rest of the books will just continue where this one left off or if it will revisit the "present" before continuing with the story. Either way, I can NOT wait for the rest of the books in this series!
This is an excellent start to this series and I plan to pick up the rest of the books as they come out!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from BookSirens. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ok. I have to say it. WHEN IS BOOK TWO COMING OUT?
From this you can probably guess that I loved this book! You didn’t? Well, I do. A Wampeh who has the abilities of his race but is too soft. That was the original assessment of Bawb by the Wampeh Ghalian masters. They were right at first but things changed as Bawb grew up. This book really gets into the psyche of a young boy who is growing into a man. It has action galore too. The only problem for me is that it ended and the next book isn’t yet available 😢
"Remember, a fire blazes but is dead without embers, and storms rage as a lone feather floats."
3.5 ⭐
I love a good story about assassins and a training school so I was immediately drawn to the blurb for this book. We follow Bawb as he is plucked from an orphanage as a child and thrown into a world of hard work, pain and unfathomable challenges. He learns that he is one of the few of his species, the Wampeh, to have the proclivity for becoming a Ghalian: highly trained assassins and spies who traverse space completing missions, influencing politics and keeping other species safe from those who want to enslave them for their powers. His training takes him through some of the hardest physical and mental situations a person, especially a child, can go through - all with the goal of sharpening him into a weapon. Mixed into that is a mystery occurring in the underground facility that most are unaware of but Bawb has seen flashes of something out of the corner of his eye.
Bawb was a likeable character, he was flagged as someone who showed too much emotion and initially was thought to be likely to fail at his training. But we quickly learn that sometimes having empathy can make you even stronger and lend you to skills which more hardened people struggle with. I loved all of the challenges that the team had to face, the uniqueness and creativity, alongside the well thought out messages that these tasks taught the students, was absolutely fascinating, the author Scott Baron truly has a skill here. The worldbuilding was amazing, so many different species of aliens, different planets and imaginative beasts to learn about and find out how they all live alongside each other was a very enjoyable part of this story. The mystery Bawb uncovers was interesting and a touch heart warming as well, although I wish more time had been spent on this aspect of the story.
I did find that the storyline was quite slow going and didn't really pick up until 70% through. Because the story is very heavy on world building we spend a lot of time learning about these aspects and the majority of it was spent following the students and Bawb day to day as they levelled up through the ranks. While the challenges were interesting and often tense or action packed I struggled to stay motivated to keep reading at times because I couldn't see where the book was heading. I think the mystery and mission that Bawb takes upon himself should've been more at the forefront of this story, mentioned more often and earlier in the book. I also found that there was not a lot depth to the character descriptions, the only way I could really tell the characters apart was by name and I couldn't really describe how any of them looked aside from the most basic species identifiers. Elzina was probably the most interesting and most recognisable side character. I found that the writing in this book utilised a lot of tell instead of show, which unfortunately isn't my favourite style.
Overall, I think the idea and creativity behind this book was absolutely incredible but the pacing and style sadly weren't for me in the end. I do this would be well worth the read if you have read Baron's other series where Bawb and a few other characters are mentioned or are main characters, but I have not read this series so perhaps that is why this didn't quite hold my attention like I was hoping it would. I would like to thank Scott Baron and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first in a series where we meet Bawb, our early teen male hero. The opening is very dramatic and action packed, but gives away all the tension as it depicts Bawb in fully qualified glory. We then flashback to when he was idling in a remote orphanage feeling unloved and unwanted. He is then plucked from that existence to a much more uncertain and harsh training regime to become the inexorable force we saw at the opening.
I was impressed with the author's imagination in creating diverse and difficult training exercises and environments for our emerging hero and his colleagues. Male and female teenagers are in this academy, but they seem not to notice or act upon this difference apart from competition for teachers' favour.
Bawb gets some help along the way from a senior member of the order who acts as his mentor and gifts him a sarcastic, but powerful artefact to better channel his magic. I did want to read on to see how Bawb would cope with the different challenges, but was not surprised at his progressing through the levels as this had been given away at the beginning. More jeopardy and uncertainty for our hero would have gained the full five stars.
He does grow in confidence and skills so that he attempts an unsanctioned, daring solo mission near the end of the book. I liked that he used advice from previous lessons and incorporated these into his improvisations when the plan went off course. The end of this text gives you a taster of the beginning of the next volume. I think even without this I will look forward to reading the next volume.

Assassins’ Academy is Scott Baron at his finest and most likely my new favorite book of his. You can tell from the opening chapter that he has a heart for Bawb and truly enjoys writing him. I love that it reads like a book six of his Space Assassins series (with some returning favorite characters!) while also standing on its own and opening up a whole new story and cast. It also takes a slightly different tone, straying from the jokes and comedic aspects of his other series, Assassins’ Academy is much more serious which I love
While it seems like a lot of adult authors rush through or skip over the “school years” of the main characters training, Scott Baron sits in it comfortably and it pays off in the end. We get to enjoy Bawbs adolescent years and see him get closer to becoming who he is in the Charlieverse. Overall, I think that was my favorite part of the story.
The one negative is that it starts to drag and slowdown a bit of the way through and the stakes seem very low. Aside from training, there’s no real dilemma or struggle for Bawb aside from a classmate that he’s pitted against; the Draco to his Harry, if you will. BUT as it starts to slow down, it picks up just as quickly a couple chapters later and Barons’ writing and likable characters more than make up for it.
Overall, if you’re new to Scott Baron or have been following him since Bad Luck Charlie, this book is a win. If it’s not in your library it should be.

I love the concept of following the protagonist as he grows and learns, allowing us to experience that same sense of understanding and accomplishment as we travel with Bawb through him many challenges.
This author has created a clear magical system that is easy to understand.
I enjoyed the different settings that were beautifully written, simple, yet easily visualized. There was a great flow of increasing tension throughout the story, and an interesting contrasts between older Bawb, from the introduction, and younger Bawb, throughout the rest of the story. I was able to see this characters personality developing throughout the novel as he matured in both age, ability, and confidence.
The only con I could see was that, at times, the dialogue did not seem natural, but, since it did not detract from the heart of the story, I was able to overlook this detail. I also felt that some early chapters were very lacking in dialogue, heavy on the tell and lighter on the show, but I understood what the author was trying to accomplish by offering a general summary of what was or had happened since the previous chapter without prolonging the actual events of importance within the story.
As a whole, this was a engaging story that snagged my interest from the beginning. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series and seeing where our young hero ends up.
When I finished Book 5 of the Space Assassin's Saga I was so sad that I had reached the end of this amazing epic with its abundance of mystery and intrigue and hoped for more books following the diverse characters from the 5 book saga. So I was delighted to find and read Book 1 of this new saga, Assassin's Academy, a new set of characters, now set against the world of how Assassins are chosen along with the grueling training regime endured to become an assassin. This fits perfectly alongside the Space Assassin's Saga to give readers an in-depth view, behind the scenes so to say, of what makes an Assassin. Yet again the characters, centered around a new recruit, Bawb were well penned and as usual it delivered an abundance of adventure, mystery, intrigue and fighting skills. If you loved the Space Assassin's Saga, you will love this and if you haven't read these yet you will certainly want to. Now looking forward to the continuing adventures of Bawb and his fellow trainees.

Fun and witty writing in this great sci-fi fantasy Bawb’s story, I pronounce it “Bob”, I wonder how close I am. Anyway this is a very interesting story that goes back in time when Bawb was young and it is all about his early days and his teachings. I thoroughly enjoyed the journey. It was interesting, fun, serious and deadly. The story carried itself well and had a good flow to it. There was a variety of characters including some from a previous series, ‘Space Assassins’ another series I really enjoyed. The reader gets to hear all of Bawbs thoughts, hopes and fears as he progresses through the ranks of the Assassin Academy. Including the snarky remarks from his magical bracelet. I am looking forward to his evolving journey as he transforms into a great warrior. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.
What an absolute pleasure it is to welcome back Bawb, the Wampeh Ghalian, into my life. I've missed him.
We first met Bawb in the Charlieverse series 'The Dragon Maze' - which is fantastic. This current series takes place as Bawb is undergoing his training in the Ghalian way. I'm other words, he's just a wee youngster. Even at such a young age, he's showing the 'outside the box' thinking that will make him such a success as he grows up.
Scott Baron's writing is easy to read, the action scenes are great, the storyline is just like a newbie in very hard training, and through it all, Bawb is just Bawb... you'll see. I can't wait for the next book!
You don't need to have read the Charlieverse series before this, in fact, I think it may be more enjoyable to read this series first. Enjoy the ride!
Bawb is a Ghalian. But not just any Ghalian, he has the makings of being a Wampeh Ghalian, one of the most feared and revered assassins in the galaxy. But he doesn't know that yet. He's just an orphan, hoping that someday he will be adopted into a good family. Until one day, two people show up and take him away to a place that will help unlock his potential.
This book was an amazing read. Following Bawb as he is inducted into the academy that will help him realize his potential. It's a hard life, not something just anyone can survive. There are real dangers and the intense training has real life and death consequences. Follow along as Bawb learns who he is and what he's capable of in this first of several books detailing his journey.

Assassin's Academy is book 1 in The Book of Bawb Series by Scott Baron. I felt that this book was an excellent fantasy adventure. Bawab was an orphan that was able yo get into the Assassin's Academy. Although he was small, Bawb had a big dream, he wanted to become one of the 5. I found the characters to be well written and interesting. The pace was perfect and the story well written and I had to know what happened next. Bawb next adventure is propelling toward becoming a Master, with the help if Master Hozark. I can't wait! I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
A friend was telling me about this for a few months, but for some reason I didn't want to read it. I really hope that wasn't my subconscious warning me.
Wow. What a lazy way to get a flashback to "where it all began".
I don't really like assassins or rogues, so this might be rough for me.
I really hope that backstabbing snake gets her comeuppance. If the protag snaps and ends her, I hope the "masters" aren't surprised. As they use every single moment to push them together.
Absolutely brilliant. I loved it. Read it in one setting. You meet young Bawb, who is whisked away from all he knows to start training as one of the galaxy's most feared Assassins. Follow his start and early years and yes there are adventures along the way. Scott Baron's books always deliver and whether you're new to him or a regular reader this installment in his Charliverse is as good as the rest.
I was so excited to be able to read how Bawb became the master assassin we all know and love from the Dragon Mage series. He truly is a complex character. We see Bawb begin in an orphanage, be taken to the secret facility, and gradually advance in training. I LOVED the Easter egg with him meeting Hunze's parents! I hope we find out how her family was taken from their home in the hidden valley. I look forward to reading the next book.
This was everything I've ever wanted! I loved Daisy's series, and then I loved Charlie's series even more, but my favorite of favorite characters is Bawb. It's always been Bawb- This is everything I could've wanted in his origin story!
This book is the first of four- and it lays the perfect foundation of the lonely, unloved child finding place and belonging. Things that make up his core character are there ready to be molded into the ninja space vampire assassin we all know and love
Assassins Academy: The Book of Bawb, was a great read.
Bawb is an orphan who thinks he getting a new family, instead he inducted into an Assassins Academy. Life is grueling and the training is hard, but slowly Bawb to learning the skills that he needs to succeed.
I really enjoyed this book, and definitely want to read more of Bawb's adventures soon.

⭐️ - awful, probably DNF ⭐️⭐️- didn’t like but not terrible, actually finished it ⭐️⭐️⭐️ - it was ok, passed the time ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - good story, good writing, entertaining, just not great ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - great, could not put it down, excellent writing and story
The basic premise sounded good, and the book delivered an entertaining and interesting story. I look forward to the next book(s), and hope they are at least equally interesting.
Wow, I've only reads a small number of Scotts books but every one a master piece. A Young boy taken in by a league of assassins to be trained accordingly with dangers and risk of life. Will he succeed? Well I know he does but the adventure getting there has been fantastic. If you haven't read any of Scott Baron this will make you a fan.
4.5 Stars! I absolutely loved this book! I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Bawb from the beginning, watching him struggle with his training and creating bonds. The world-building in this book is incredible, with phenomenal world lore. I cannot wait to see what's in store for Bawb and his assassin cohorts.
This book is certainly up to par with the “Charlie” books and the others I read from the pen of Scott Baron. I have really enjoyed it, to the extent of neglecting my chores. I am looking forward to getting into “The Book of Bawb 2”. Thanks Scott, please keep them coming?
And can hardly wait to read the next one. Yes, it is an academy book which has been done ad nauseum, but Bawd isn't the prince or a girl with outrageous magical powers. He's at the beginning an average novice assassin pupil, but who gradually through mentoring, hard work, gradually becomes more knowledgeable and able. So a really good story.
I am glad I found this series exploring Bawb and his origins. I loved the Bad Luck Charlie series and this universe they all live in is just so much fun. The characters are great, detailed locations, magic, some tech, it is all good. I definitely recommend this book and universe.
Quite possibly one of the best books I've read in a while and I've read some good ones. This story is captivating and realistic. Bawb is not perfect. He is not a prodigy. He has skill or at least the potential for skill if he embraces it. Follow along to see what trouble he gets himself into.
A good main character in Bawb a young Wampeh orphan who is apparently adopted but all is not what it seems. He is being prepared to become an operative for a secretive organization. His journey to become a member has been very entertaining and I look forward to reading more of his metamorphosis
This was one fantastic read. Totally original, I've never read a book like this before and I was totally and completely enthralled by this one. I, oh so need to read the next book in this series. I am absolutely addicted to this series so far. Amazing!
This book is entertaining. The story seems thrown at you. What you see is what you get. The character development is not great. Fun story. Love the world you built. I wish there was more depth. There’s a main character and everyone else is there hold up his character.
I enjoyed this book especially the setting really came alive. The main character reminds me a lot of Peter Parker/ Spider-Man. It is a fun read but you need to read the authors previous works to get a better feel of how the system operates.
