This is book eleven of the Midlife Demons and Demigods series and the Hunter community are grieving for young Sahara’s death by the hands of the dark witch and Kaine Frost is not taking his part in the situation well. His twin sister Indy knows he has a death wish from what happened and she is going to lose him! Shannon had used up her well of magic trying to heal him and they had to portal him back to the healer to ensure he might live. She feels that something is off with her magic and even consults with Hecate to see if the goddess can tell her what is wrong with her. The only good advice she gives them is to find Mardella’s hidden temple, as that will hopefully weaken her. Mardella is creating a hybrid army and each time they are called into action, they face an ever more dangerous foe, with no idea of what dangers to avoid from the hybrids. At least the demon king has agreed to help try and take her down, sending through his demons, who unfortunately attack the hunters as well, once they get into a fighting frenzy! Daryn knows that the agreement with the demon king is not a lasting one and they are still having to stop demons from killing humans and fellow hunters. Shannon’s ability to heal Kaine in a very unusual manner, to get him back to base, brings lots of questions for Daryn and even Shannon, about how her magic is reacting. Even her son Caleb’s shadow cat, Sphinx, knows that her magic is different, but still recognises her as the most powerful person on the base. Shannon is as much a part of Sphinx’s life as Caleb, and he will protect them both.

There is news of a personal note for Caleb, with someone from his past wanting to see him, but everyone is supposed to stay on lockdown on base, whilst their healer recovers after healing Kaine. With all the dangerous battles the hunters are facing against numerous hybrids, their healer needs to recover and Shannon doesn’t really know how to access her healing power, except in emergencies. Cipher and Indy get closer after her troubles with Kaine, shaken by what happened to her twin and being unable to stop any of it. The hunters keep getting pulled into traps of Mardella’s making, as she wants Shannon and Caleb’s powers for herself, especially those of Sphinx. They still don’t know exactly what Mardella’s plan is and what she wants with her army of hybrids and the artifacts she has been stealing. Cipher figures out something the latest artifact she stole, could be for and that would spell disaster for both realms. The demon king fears she will try to break the veil between this world and his, and doing so would destroy both worlds. Mardella is working off a deranged idea to suit herself and her wishes to bring someone back from the veil, who she loved long and lost long ago. But that may not be her only agenda, as she seems to always be changing things up to keep the hunters unsettled. Shannon is still struggling with her powers, but it seems she has new and emerging magic coming through and that is affecting her ability to use the magic she has been used to. The battle to stop Mardella is not yet over and it will take all of their magic and power, working together as one force, to hopefully overcome her soon, before she can accumulate too many hybrids for her army or any more artifacts to use her dark magic spells upon.

Another hard hitting storyline, as not everything goes in the hunter’s way, in fact most of it hits them hard and more are lost or badly injured. The bond between Daryn and Shannon is still growing, with a slight trust issue at one stage, but her emerging protection magic is draining her, whilst her healing magic is taking a new twist. Hopefully these will help in what they have to face next, as even Caleb’s spirit takes a mighty blow. As an avid fan of paranormal women's fiction, "Betrayed by Magic", the eleventh book in Tia Didmon's Midlife Demons and Demigods series, captured my attention from the first page. This book is a thrilling rollercoaster ride filled with dark twists, high stakes, and a complex blend of emotions.

The aftermath of Sahara’s death leaves the hunter community in disarray, and Didmon does an excellent job of portraying the grief and turmoil that follows. The Frost twins, always a dynamic duo, are on the brink of collapse, adding a layer of urgency and tension to the story. Sahara’s demise isn’t just a plot point; it’s a catalyst that sets off a chain of events, each more riveting than the last.

Our protagonist’s illness introduces a sense of mystery and foreboding. Despite Hecate’s reassurances, it’s clear that something deeper and darker is at play. The quest to find the hidden temple of the dark witch keeps the narrative moving at a brisk pace, and Didmon’s world-building shines as we delve deeper into the lore and secrets of this paranormal universe.

Mardella’s theft of another artifact raises the stakes considerably. Her plans remain shrouded in mystery, but the implications are dire for both the human and demon realms. The arrival of the demon king’s horde adds a thrilling element of danger, as our heroes must prepare for a war on two fronts. The tension is palpable, and I found myself eagerly turning pages to see how they would confront these seemingly insurmountable challenges.

What I particularly enjoyed about "Betrayed by Magic" is the depth of character development. Each character, from the grieving hunters to the formidable demon king, is richly drawn and multi-dimensional. The protagonist’s struggle with her illness and the uncertainty of the future adds a relatable human element amidst the fantastical chaos.

Didmon’s writing is evocative and immersive, drawing readers into the dark and enchanting world of Spirit Falls. The comparisons to Shannon Mayer, K.F. Breene, and Victoria Dannan are well-deserved, as Didmon expertly blends action, emotion, and supernatural intrigue.

"Betrayed by Magic" is a must-read for fans of paranormal women's fiction. It’s a gripping tale of loss, resilience, and the battle between good and evil. Tia Didmon has once again delivered a captivating story that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series. If you’re looking for a book that combines heart-pounding action with deep emotional resonance, this is the one for you.

Betrayed By Magic is the eleventh book in the Midlife Demons and Demigods series. These are not standalone books. Each books picks up from the last so you're best off starting with the first book: Destiny Of Magic.

After Kaine was mortally wounded, Shannon managed to use her power to bring him back from the brink of death, but something in her changed. She completely drained herself and continues to feel "off" throughout the book.

The Dark Witch contunues to be the "female dog" that she is, without consideration to anyone or anything else. She is completely driven by her own dark motives. As expected, there are more attacks, and more deaths. She also gets her hands on yet another dark relic: the Ephemeral Idol. (The authors' brains impress me with everything they think up!) The Hunters continue to try to locate her base of operations without success. She is always one step ahead of them, but on a positive note, Shannon manages to avoid repeated attempts on her life, much to the Dark Witch's frustration.

I was very happy to have more Kenji & Ogie, those mischievous little Imps, as well as Sphinx. I've always loved cats, but that shadow cat has a special place in my heart. I loved this line:

"My cat recognizes Mom as the alpha in the hunter base. She would never abandon me if I was in danged, but she will always protect Mom. No offense, but Sphinx doesn't recognize your authority as the leader. Only as Mom's... mate."

As my love of cats really knows no bounds, I thoroughly enjoyed learning that Kenji has silvas, the cat equivalent within the demon realm. Not cool that the other demons snack on them. Bad demons!

I am thoroughly invested in this series, and eagerly await each new release. This one was a more emotional read. #iykyk

It looks like there are at least two more books planned:
Challenge Of Magic - A death. A demon deal. A magical dilemma. - Sept 2024
Ruin Of Magic - A baby. A bargain. A betrayal. - Dec 2024

I wonder if there might be more. I'm not ready to part with these characters!

One last thing... this sentence resonated with me as words of wisdom:
"I embraced the uncertainty, drawing strength from the unseen and the unknown."

Audiobook Review

Overall Story Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)
Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️ (2/5)
Narration Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

Review:
This book throws you right back into the chaos. Sahara’s death still hangs heavy, the Frost twins are cracking under the pressure, and Shannon is literally fighting her own body while trying to hold everyone together. The stakes feel higher, darker, and way more urgent than earlier books. The demon king’s fear of the dark witch? That was a twist I didn’t expect.

Narration:
Katie Hagaman does a great job with this installment. She captures Shannon’s weariness, the Frost twins’ tension, and the dark intensity around Mardella with the right emotional punch. Her pacing keeps the suspense alive, and she gives each character enough distinction to stand out without being distracting.

Would I recommend:
Absolutely, for anyone already deep into the Midlife Demons and Demigods series. It’s not a good “jump in here” book since it’s #11, but if you’ve been following Shannon’s journey, this one will hit hard. Tons of action, emotional weight, and that constant what is Mardella planning now? tension.

Series Continuation - Surprising Events, New Magic, Formidable Foe

Gonna repeat, again, because this series deserves it: Absolutely positively love this series. This story (no spoilers) is still so good you won't want to stop reading. This entire series speaks to the challenges of the hunters as the primary story arc. Shannon, Daryn, Indy, Kaine, Cipher, Caleb, Marlin, even Sphinx and now, Mardella are an integral part of this amazing story. Now, poor Shannon, with some guidance from Hecate, has been thrown a loop and seems have developed or developing a very unique twist to her magic which I'm sure will be vital for the story with Mardella. The hint here and there of Mardella and her back story is a tale I absolutely must know. What actually caused her to become so dangerous? Or what final purpose will the hybrids serve? The unique skills, the descriptions of the characters, every location, even the elevator in the hunter headquarters is so well written you will think you are actually there. This may be one of the greatest stories ever told, written perfectly.

Still reeling from their loss, our heroine is now faced with a war on two fronts. As if things were not bad enough, this could very well be the end.

This is book eleven of the series. It does pretty well as a standalone, but will definitely be a better experience if read in order.

This is a paranormal romance story with witches, demons and that ilk. The story is well written and easy to read with a plot that nonetheless has a lot going on. The setting is well developed and quite intriguing, so I am definitely looking forward to seeing more. The characters are equally well done. I definitely like our heroine and look forward to getting to know her better. The plot has a nice bit of mystery to it and, of course, plenty of magic. Overall, this is an intense series and I look forward to seeing what comes next.

Highly recommended.

Sheesh. Shannon, Daryn and the rest of the hunters are going crazy trying to figure out where the Dark Witch is and how to defeat her. Each of the last few books have upped the stakes and things are getting worse. So bad in fact, that Kaine, Indy’s twin is extremely hurt and ever since Shannon saved him long enough to get to Kranston, the healer, her magic has been different. Len, her ex-hubby ends up visiting and I was shocked at how different he was. Caleb is learning quickly and his shadow cat, Sphinx is just freaking awesome! Scary as all get out, but awesome. Things get pretty scary in this book and it made me laugh, cry and pretty much chew on my nails. I was devastated at a few things that happened in the book. I both need to see the next book and am terrified of what will happen next.

The dark witch is at it again. Targeting Shannon. Making their life perilous .
I love the hint's Hecate is giving us for the future.
Daryn is as always supportive of Shannon. Concerned as she is about her "lack" of energy. Why hasn't she been able to get her full power back? why is her gifts fluctuating so much?
We learn more about Len and his life.
I love the flow of the book. The way you can get immerse your imagination and see the life of the hunter.
Then there is Kenji and her "nature" to content with. Imps will be imps.
Steam to the romance. Non-stop action. Solutions to work on. Kaine to contend with.
Excellent continuation of the series.

I'm still skipping over a lot of 'feely' text, that is probably just me. Something is going on with Shannon's magic. I have my theory and you will probably figure out out, too. There will be no revelation in this book, so don't be disappointed. The Dark Witch is still up to her nasty tricks and Caleb is going to be dealt another blow courtesy of the bwitch. The Hunters will suffer a loss from the same source. I can't wait until this monster is dealt with and an adequate revenge is administered. On a happier note, I wonder what Shannon will make in the newly discovered craft room? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I loved this book and all of the ones before. The connection between Darron and Shannon is incredible and something I would love. I was surprised when Shannon’s ex, the father of her son ends up being killed by the evil that was trying to take over her son. I also am glad that all of her fellow hunters came at the end to stop demons as they attacked. The dark forces finally came to a screeching halt and Mardella was pushed away again. I definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves women in the main role and all of the evil creatures in the adventures.

The Midlife Demons and Demigods series continues with Betrayed by Magic, an installment packed with high stakes, magical battles, and dark revelations. The hunt for the hidden temple, the looming war, and the threat of Mardella’s growing power keep the tension high. Katie Hagaman’s narration is a highlight—her performance brings the characters to life, especially in the more intense scenes. Her pacing and voice work keep the story engaging, even when the plot becomes a bit overwhelming with multiple threats at once.

Absolutely amazing but totally heartbreaking story. What the Dark Witch has put Shannon, Caleb, Daryn, and the hunters. Between the betrayal, loss, constant choas they are all stretched to their limits. Trying to stop a crazed woman who wants to destroy everything because of power. This is an action packed well written story. Tia and Victoria have really put together a story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Amazing series from the start and highly recommend.

How many fronts and what sorts of losses do the Hunters face?

A mourning Dark Witch seems unconcerned about the costs of fulfilling her desires. Understanding her ultimate goals and methods could be tricky, and might be costly among the Hunters.

Changes on magics, and deaths with personal faces are reflective of shared challenges.

As the battles continue, the Hunters must consider training and goals as the faces of their goes, and the types of battles changes.
.
Intense ongoing action and drama.

I have to say, I’m really enjoying this series. Every time I finish a book, I can’t wait to listen to the next; they are compulsive listening.

Each instrument is well written with characters who are well drawn, the story itself is imaginative and original, and I can’t wait to listen to the next book

The narration by Katie Hagaman is very good. She brings each character to to life and each emotion to the fore.

Sometimes you get the feeling that the hunters are being hunted themselves.
Especially with this witch.
She seems determined to take one of them with her.
She's hunting necro powers and artefacts and the hunters are becoming her targets at time's.
It's not going to stop them trying to take her down, with an unlikely ally that's fighting against them at the same time.
No wonder the hunters are on edge.

New magic coming on.
Isn't it the reality that when something new to learn comes into our lives, we experience our knowledge of the already learned slipping? Don't worry, it will all come back eventually, but in the meantime... Shannon is frustrated as her magic slips through her fingers. The hunter's risks are higher than ever and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight with the dark queen. Another great read.

Kaine's survival was a close thing after the battle in the forest, still devastated by Sahara's death he is reckless about his safety.
Shannon is still trying to recover from her magic burn out and a suspected case of food poisoning.
Mardella makes a devastating strike against Shannon and her son.
Mardella has the Ephemeral Idol, a thing of great power but also a dark artifact, nothing is ever for free.
Hecate has made it known that Shannon is important to the war and must be protected. Another devastating battle and loss.

Daryn and Shannon along with the other Hunters are still reeling from Sahara's death. They've come together with a sense of commadrie that binds people together. The Dark Witch Mardella seems to be one step ahead of The Hunters which is frustrating for them. Shannon has depleted her magical reserves and needs to rest to recover from the expenditures. Tragedy strikes hard for Caleb but will he recover from it? What is Mardella's endgame? Find out in Betrayed by Magic.

Shannon’s magic is changing again. This time it is becoming more protective magic rather than offensive. This story caught my interest and had me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next. What is Marcella planning? I am also wondering if there is more to Shannon’s magic than she knows. Cannot wait for the next book.

Brilliant Series

Betrayed by Magic (Midlife Demons and Demigods Book 11) by Tia Didmon and Victoria Crawford. Shannon uses the last of her healing magic to save Kaines life and she feels under the weather.
