The plotting isn't completely flawless, but the world building is *stunning*.

It took me a little longer to to read this. This is not due to the book - I started reading it during my final semester of university and I got very busy with my final major project and so had little to no time to read. Upon submitting all my coursework, I now have time to read again and have been able to pick this book back up.

I was worried that with a considerable break in reading I would forget what has happened in the story and would struggle to get back into it but in the end this was not a problem. Once I started reading it again I quickly found myself back into the world and became immersed within the story again.

It did take me a minute to fully get into this book but once I did I really enjoyed it. I love the variety of characters and their stories, and how theirs pasts affect how they interact with each other. The book being set in London made for an engaging setting as I am also living in London so, for me, this aided in my immersion. I found the elements of Afro-Caribbean culture and mythology which are woven throughout the story to be very interesting and I would love to learn more about it.

The book ended with a resolution but still left lots of questions about the characters and what will happen next for them, so I am very excited for the next book in the series to be published.

Lots of interesting characters, intriguing plot and great magic but sadly the book didn’t add up to the sun of its parts.

Took me a while to get into this but ended up really enjoying it! Eli and Malcolm were well rounded characters who I'd like to revisit and learn more about Afro-Caribbean culture/mythology.
