As an advanced copy reader and reviewer of Sophie McKay’s previous books on container and permaculture gardening, I was really excited to read her newest book about growing fruit trees. Of course, my initial thought was ‘I don’t know a thing about planting and growing fruit trees’ and felt very intimidated. Funnily enough the author states in the beginning of the book that she was also apprehensive about growing an orchard.
But as with her previous books, she learned the art of having a self-sustaining food supply and mastered gardening. Luckily she learned well enough to explain the process, step by step, to those of use unschooled in this lost art.
The truly impressive and inspiring aspects of McKay’s books is both the thoroughness as well as the simplicity. She breaks down the process of planting an orchard or just several fruit trees into an actual, workable plan.
Neither healthy, bountiful gardens or orchards appear overnight. But with the gentle yet fundamental guidelines laid out, chapter by chapter, you will find that you will be able to set great plans into motion. And all the things that you’d never think to ask before tackling something as aspirational as providing a self-reliant food source for yourself and your family: she’s already thought and answered them.
Again, I cannot praise her books enough for being so meticulous from start to finish in planning and executing an orchard or just a few fruit trees. Something that will (ha) bear fruit in bringing you both joy and actual fruit for years down the road.

There were so many typos/errors in this book that it was distracting to read. At one point an entire paragraph was copied and written out twice right after each other. In one of the graphs two points of information were missing, like it was just forgotten. Very often I saw words and occasionally entire sentences written without any spaces. As for the information contained in the book, it just seemed a little sparse. The entire book is only 150 pages long. This is the first of many books on this topic that I plan to read so fortunately most of the information was still new. However, I was really looking forward to the pruning section and I finished it with more questions than answers. A few times the author mentions terms that she assumes the reader is already familiar with, and I wasn't. I can't say that I recommend this book, I would say look for something more in depth, and certainly better edited.

This is a fantastic book for those starting their orchard or who bought a property with an existing orchard like me.
It breaks a overwhelming topic down into easy to understand and accomplishable steps.
The layout of the book makes it straightforward to read and it contains lots of valuable information that I had not considered before.
Particularly enjoyed the harvesting chart, the tree guilds and the plans for the apple storage rack.
I will be referencing back to this book many times during my permaculture orchard journey.

I loved it! I'm planning to start a home orchard. I want to grow fruit without pesticides, with natural fertilizer, and using methods that are safe for the land, the environment and for me. And I'm doing it on soil that was depleted of nutrients by the previous owner. This book feels like it was written just for me. I now have all the knowledge I need and plan to put trees into newly-revived soil this fall. Thank you Sophie McKay.
